Interest Check: Hunter-Style Horror Game-Fate Core

And there sure as hell ain't any magical books with all the answers in the library of your local high school. The supernatural isn't a neutral force either. It can't be used for good or evil. It ain't really a force at all. The supernatural is a parasite or a corruption, a disease or a contagion that bleeds into our world from somewhere beyond. Everyone it touches becomes infected. Everyone. And then they have to be stopped. They have to be put to rest before that contagion can spread. The supernatural is an infection, and we are the doctors who amputate. We almost never save anyone. Our stories never have a happy ending. They don't end with confetti, and they don't end with a medal. They usually end with you in an alley using the business end of a claw hammer on some poor bastard who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Don't give me that look. Sit down. You aren't going anywhere. There's nowhere for you to go. You see, it's already too late for you. You aren't corrupted yet, but the other side has your scent. They're coming for you just like they're coming for us. We fight to save the world and ourselves. We fight because we have to. Welcome aboard."

Hi! I'm looking for two or three additional players to join me in a horrific Fate Core game of supernatural hunters. This game will be one part Frailty, one part Delta Green, and one part bottom tier Hunter: the Vigil. Expect lots of collateral damage, body horror, blood and guts, and good old fashioned murder. If you'll do your best to play along, I'll do my best to horrify you as much as possible.



I expect this to be a one-shot. I want to meet some new people, try out the forums here, and get blood all over the place. We'll be using vanilla Fate Core to play, but most supernatural creatures will bypass Stress entirely and just inflict Conditions. I'm looking for ordinary people turned monster hunters as characters. At least one of your aspects should be something like "Garbage Man Turned Monster Hunter" or "Alcoholic Ex-Cop Turned Monster Hunter." You get the idea. We'll use standard starting Refresh, no Extras, and I'll have to approve all Stunts (but I'm open to most anything). When we start you all will have hunted together before, and I will be running a little short version of the Phase Trio (preferably on Discord) to get at least some of the characters connected beyond just a few ideas. Also, if you want an NPC who will be a part of your/the story, we'll probably have some civilian hangers-on as well.

Did you have typical tropes you wanted the characters to fill? Like the hunk, the shooter, the weird kid, the techie, etc? Or is it wide open?

Sure. I am game. I have never played FATE core, so if you are open to noobs to the system, please consider me.

Count me in too. I'll have to try to download Fate Core. I don't have it saved. I think I may have developed a character once before for a Fate Core game. I'll have to take a careful look.

I've only played Fate once on here and the game fizzled out almost immediately so I'm not too familiar with the system but I'm very interested. If you still have room, I would very much like to join

I am open, so long as you are willing to play catch-up. This won't be a tutorial, but with as agonizingly slow as PbP is, you'll have plenty of time to read ahead.

1. Do you think you can keep up with about 3 posts a week, about every other day?
2. Are you on Discord or are you willing to join us on Discord (this is important, especially for the people new to Fate)? Fate requires a lot of back-and-forth to adjudicate scenes. Discord helps a lot with that.
3. What niche/role are you interested in filling for our hunter game? Stick to commonly seen tropes (the hunk, the shooter, the weird, the techie, etc). This way everyone will have a good idea what you intend and can think of something else.

3. I'll be the weird kid. Maybe she is the psychic canary in the coal mine. When the supernatural gets near, she starts to get sick, see visions, or something equally horrible. That work for what you have in mind? I like the idea that she has an NPC who "looks out for her," but in a totally unhealthy and co-dependent way. I'll try to make their relationship as weird as possible, because, hey, it's me.

3. I'm interested in playing a character who's in it to protect others. Someone close to me got messed up by the supernatural so I joined the fight to maybe find a way to save them or at least to prevent other people from suffering the same fate. Probably a "shooter" with a heart of gold. Could be a disgraced former cop who lost their job because of their obsession with the supernatural.

Those both look fine to me. If y'all want to get started on your characters, go for it. Come up with a High Concept, a Trouble, and, if you want, Aspect #3. We'll reserve the last two Aspects at least for the Phase Trio and once the game gets going.

Everyone, so far we have a disgraced cop and a weird kid who is like a proximity alarm for the supernatural (with an adult traveling buddy who might also be her kidnapper). o.0

We have room for one or two more, if anyone else is interested. I know this is a holiday weekend and people are moving slowly. We are about to go outside in the rain and blow some stuff up ourselves. :-) I'll keep this open until Monday or Tuesday of next week, then we'll get started.
