Kymael Brithanos - The Metal Caves

Aug 20, 2019 1:27 pm
For how long you are unsure, but stumbling into these metal caves was the worst decision you have ever made; and that is saying a lot for one as long-lived as you. The metal makes things all the more suffocating, and you long for the open sky and lush green of the woodlands to the east and for the honey meade you have grown so fond of making.

The inside of the cave seemed normal enough as you took shelter, but the rear wall was made of metal. Intrigued, you elected to spend the night, but were shocked to discover the metal wall had opened much like a door that slid in and out of the walls. Figuring to take a quick look around, you became trapped as the door slid closed behind you. Now, you have found yourself running for your life, hiding from the metal golems and ravenous plant creatures inhabiting this place.

From deep within the caves you can hear sounds that remind you of forest life, but the only plants that you have found have either tried to eat you or have infested entire hallways with their choking vines. Teh only luck you have had was in finding a yellow glass pane, which you discovered that can be used to open some of the doors of the complex. By mistake, you also found that it works on black doors, but have not yet tried it on any other color.

Black, brown, yellow, orange, red and violet and grey seem to be all of the colors, at least on this level and part way down mine shaft you investigated when you first came in, but nothing you have found gives you any idea on how to get the exit doors to reopen.

Now, your luck seems to have truly changed. The golems led a group of men(!) into one of their strongholds. As you contemplated how to join up with them, a buzzing sound has started sounding, and along the corridors red lights have begun flashing. You watch as one of the golems glides across the floor to re-enter their head quarters. A short time later, you see a second approaching as well.
OOC:
I'll get a map up to show your exact position in a little while. Work calls. :)

Overcoming the hobgoblin slaver the previous day proved more challenging than expected. The ice storm rendered many of his best spells almost useless and the fight left him physically exhausted. Of course, no amount of sleep would lessen the emotional burden of failing the family that had requested his aid. He could only hope they found some solace in justice for their lost son.

He needed to rest in order to make the return journey to the village and share his dread findings. It seemed like a harmless cave – no home to evils like owlbears or hags. Just a means of shelter from the storm.

Now Kymael realizes, as he wanders through the alien labyrinth, that on some level he’d indulged his curiosity in order to procrastinate facing the boy’s parents. He slumps against the nearest wall and slides down to the floor. Wall, floor, ceiling – it is meaningless. This prison is a box of steel slabs closing in on him. The cruel monotony is only interrupted by horrible abominations of flora and bizarre floating constructs. To his frustration and shame, he knows he lacks the strength to challenge either group.

With his mental fortitude nearing the breaking point, he notices something green on the bottom of his boot – a single fir tree sprig. Gently he removes it and inhales its waning evergreen scent. More reliable than any magic elixir, he feels his muscles relax and recharge. He reclaims a morsel of willpower, enough to stand and return to seeking a way out. Holding the sprig tight, he whispers a prayer of gratitude

As he makes his way down the latest corridor, Kymael hears the tweaking sound of more oncoming constructs. Like a mouse spotting a hawk, he scurries around the next corner to remain out of sight. Yet the scene he witnesses shakes him free of the stupor that has been slowly strangling him: a group of men and women adventurers guarded by a pair of constructs.

The unlikely party pass his hiding spot and continue down another corridor, then enter a room to the right. To his dismay, the room is halfway down the hallway out in the open. There seems to be another corridor directly across from the entrance. Since he cannot approach it safely, he waits for an opportunity to discover more.

After hours of surveillance, a blaring sound erupts throughout the metal maze. As one construct enters the room, his elven ears can also make out the familiar sounds of battle. Another construct floats by, perhaps to provide reinforcement to subdue the prisoners. Sensing the moment has come, Kymael begins concentrating on his holy symbol of Rillifane Rallathil for balance and power. Muttering the divine words, he launches three fiery rays of energy at the construct. He takes cover back around the corner to watch the results of his efforts.

You feel the divine energy flowing through you as you focus on the metallic golem down the corridor. With a few muttered words of prayer, the rays of light flash out, striking the golem and illuminating it in holy light. As you move to take cover, you see that the beams did not actually strike the thing, but rather were deflected by some invisible, arcane shield.

The golem stops from entering the room, and begins squawking, whirling around and looking in your direction as it moves toward you.
OOC:
Two rays hit the golem for 9 HP radiant damage, though its shield absorbed it all. Roll a stealth check.

Getting yourself back to the corner, you see the golem headed toward your position. You know from watching them that they can mve pretty quickly, though this one approaches more slowly. It squawks, beeps and crackles as it does, when suddenly it blurts out in a metallic-sounding voice "Cease hostility. Interrogation required. Commandant notified. Cease hostility."
OOC:
You have at most one round of action before the golem gets to your position at the corner. I'm prodding the others to see what they are doing as well.

While wondering in the tunnels, he’d seen some constructs cast light that burned and now is expecting such a fate. Managing somehow to remain on his feet, Kymael scrambles back behind the corner. When no sounds of attack reach his ears, he pokes his head out to investigate. The construct is indeed heading his way, slowly.

Kymael is a trusting elf, a loyal friend, and (as of recently) is a devout servant of the Rillifane Rallathil. He is not, however, a strategically gifted fellow – especially in high-pressure situations. His brain freezes as he attempts to think of brilliant and creative solutions to his dilemma. Failing that, he whispers the sacred words to induce a shimmering shield around his person*. Flustered, he draws on even more power from his god and takes a step toward the oncoming enemy. He unleashes a bright ball of flickering flame with explodes with a deep boom which echoes through the halls.

As your fireball streaks across the corridor, you see the red door behind the goilem slide open and the men previously held by the golems coming out. Too late, your fireball balloons into a raging inferno around the metal construct and the flames rush into the faces of the others, forcing them to retreat back into the room. The shimmering field surrounding the golem glows bright as your magical flames engulf it, but the thing flows right through the inferno as if it were scarcely affected.

The golem squawks again, this time the metallic voice saying "Cease attacks. Deadly force authorized. Cease attacks. Deadly force authorized. Shield collapse probable, regeneration initiated."
OOC:
