Chapter 5: Pleased to Meet You

Aug 27, 2019 5:06 pm
The departure from the preserve is subdued. There's a peace there that isn't echoed outside its confines, and leaving that behind is not easy. The Guardian does wish the party well, and indicates that it will welcome Ephwrath and Krav back, should they wish to study further. It also mentions that it has contacted its counterparts at other preserves and told them of your mission. The Guardian does worry that it has not connected with several of the other preserves in some time, but it cannot tell you where you might be able to find the entrances to the other preserves, even if they are still viable.

After some discussion, it is decided that Viani, Froak, Krav and Ephwrath will journey to the "nest of knives" as the party promised the frog people that ferried them across the lake, while the rest of the party will continue on to the rendezvous with Coreene and Uelten. Viani, Krav and Ephwrath indicate that they will return to Viamard to aid the villagers in rebuilding, continue to study the preserve, and act as a waypoint for future explorers leaving Meriava. Further communication may be a challenge, but the Guardian indicates that it may be able to send messages through Pip the sparrow that now travels with Elora.

There is sadness, gratitude, well-wishing, and many other emotions as the people of Viamard say goodbye to the party. Renaya and Yelnar have their own private discussion, their own goodbyes more personal than the others. Renaya too will be staying behind, helping Viani, Krav and Ephwrath in their efforts. As she says, it gives her a purpose that doesn't require that her abilities be restored. "But, if you find a way to reverse it, and you don't come back here, and I find out..." she says to the party, wagging her finger at them with an unspoken threat.

After acquiring horses from the family estates outside of town, the Viamard party packs up -- stocked with as many supplies as Viamard can offer -- and departs the following morning. Like recent days, it is cloudy but not ominously so, breezy but not uncomfortably so, cool but not cold. A typical spring morning.

Viamard Party

The road to the retreat appears to have fallen into disuse over the years. While it must have once been wide and well-traveled, it is now weed-choked and sometimes hard to follow. Still, there aren't any major issues on the journey, which matches with what the Guardian was able to tell you.

Every once in a while, you spot something that catches your eye. One time, Yelnar swears that he saw a deer with its antlers growing out of its shoulders rather than its head. Searching further for it proves fruitless, though there are clear tracks that go into the heavy underbrush. Looking for them on the other side of the brambles, you can't seem to find where they exit. If they ever did.

Trees are occasionally twisted and warped. There is one copse where the trees themselves have grown together into a single trunk, despite the individual trunks being several feet away from one another. Other strange plant life is often evident as well: odd colors, unusual fragrances from the early spring wildflowers, and other such things.

On the third day outside Viamard, the hilltop that Athisa described becomes visible. As she warned, the road to the hilltop is not easily found. There is a thick growth of thorny bushes that circles the base of the hill, but after a couple of hours of searching, you find a gap that allows entrance, though the horses are not at all happy about the passage. With some judicious use of blades, you're able to expand it enough to bring everyone and the horses through. A narrow trail extends around and up the hill, through a heavy forest of fir and pine.

Hara Party

Leaving Hara is difficult in a number of ways.

First, Minama is not particularly encouraged by the idea that Coreene is leaving to get help. For one, it means that her mother won't be coming home soon. For another, it seems that this whole issue is more complicated than it first appeared, and Minama is old enough -- and has seen enough in her short life -- to make that connection. But after some tears -- perhaps on both sides of that conversation -- and reassurances, the girl seems at least resigned to the fact that she will have to wait, and that's okay for now.

Second, the city guard has stepped up its patrols. It's also added to its ranks, apparently. Where there used to be two guards on occasional patrol, about half of the patrols have picked up at least one additional member. The added presence is not dressed in the uniform of the guard, and seems to have no obvious consistent uniform. One thing is generally agreed upon among the citizens that will talk about such things: the city guards clearly defer to their third member, and they're far more willing to poke and dig at things they deem to be suspicious or out-of-place.

Finally, getting in or out of the city has become more complicated. The gates now bear a consistent guard presence, and questions are being asked about your occupation in the city, your business outside the city, whether you have any family remaining behind...

After completing your unfinished business in the city, Coreene and Uelten make their way to the gates, having procured horses through Uelten's connections. The questions come as expected, and there's a particularly tense moment when one of these mysterious new companions of the guard comes out of the gate house to observe the proceedings. After a while, the official guardsman questioning our heroes looks to the newer arrival for his thoughts. After a long, suspicious study, the mysterious guard nods and allows them through the gates.

Like the party out of Viamard, there are occasional signs that unnatural things have altered the landscape, but these are not new concepts. Those that have lived outside the Wards are aware that their world has changed in unpredictable ways. Your journey is similarly uneventful, and late on the third day, you arrive at the wall of thorns described by Athisa. After searching for an entrance, you find a passage through the thorns that, while efforts have clearly been made to disguise it, has recently been passed through, even made larger. It would seem that someone -- hopefully the other party -- has recently been here.

OOC:
The Viamard party arrives a couple of hours before the Hara party. It is early evening by the time the Hara party arrives, the sun almost down. The "retreat" is a collection of small wooden buildings surrounding a larger central building. Think of a summer camp. The smaller buildings are sleeping quarters, housing between four and eight beds, each with a stone fireplace for warmth. The larger building is primarily one large open room with multiple tables, with a kitchen and a few smaller meeting rooms around it. It was clearly built very stoutly, and so despite some evidence of disrepair, structurally it's very sound.

The Viamard folks should decide what they've been doing in the time between their arrival and the Hara party's arrival, and then we can RP the meeting.

Before leaving Viamard, Verrian suggested that the party inventory its supplies and barter with the villagers for anything they might be needing. Trying to secure supplies in their next location might be risky.

Verrian is very glad to see that the retreat has held up sufficiently to provide them with decently secure shelter after their long ride, as well as beds. It's been quite a long time since she's been on a horse, and her body is expressing itself on the matter eloquently. She helps with the unloading - there are still an awful lot of weapons they're carting around - and places her belongs in the room with eight beds. She makes a heroic, successful effort to not collapse on the bed she's chosen and instead begins bringing the fireplace to life.

Ember spends much of the ride in thought, sitting side-saddle, trying to process what she's seen and how she can avoid messing it up. Her mind winds with rude, but also ambitious thoughts, and no small part of her wants to tame this unchained magic herself. She does talk to the others when she can, even if only to avoid looking like she's brooding. Oddly enough, she doesn't have much to say to Verrian.

When they reach camp, she also goes for the room with eight beds, standing awkwardly for a long time before choosing one on the same side as the Naucan, but with a bed in between.

Ember does try to help Verrian build the fire, though, and sparks it to life with her magic as soon as it's ready.

If, uh, that's okay here.

"I appreciate the help," Verrian says, smiling tiredly. "I'm afraid I've never been great at starting campfires. However..."

The Naucan stands and puts her hands on Ember's shoulders, looking earnestly into the girl's eyes. "You do need to be very careful about using your magic from now on. We have no idea how many people Disos has scouring the countryside for magic-users. They don't necessarily need someone who can detect magic. It could be as simple as people being paid to inform on anyone they see using magic. So only use it when it's just us, and only when it's definite that no one spying could see it, okay?"

Lowering her head to touch her forehead to Ember's, she says, "I don't want to risk what happened to Renaya happening to you."

Wil is happy to be on the road again with Atticus and his new friends. He occasionally regales them with stories of his prior travels. They are obviously over the top and only for the punchline, but some of them shed a little light on his home and other encounters.

When they get to the thorns, his small size is a help with clearing the path.

Once at the camp he helps take care of the animals, making sure they haven't picked up any stones in their hooves and showing anyone who doesn't know how, the right way to groom the mounts.

Should we all stay in one cabin? Safety in numbers.

Ember’s face flushes red and she tries to contain the sudden rush of anger and fear.

I will die before I let that bastard kill my soul, she mutters. And I’ll make him regret ever touching me.

She’s startled out of it by Wil, quickly standing up, now red just because she’s embarrassed. Her gin seems a bit awkward.

Plenty of room in here!
Aug 27, 2019 7:46 pm
Verrian is a little taken aback - not by Ember's rage (because let's face it, Verrian is just as ragey on this topic), but because the girl seems to be under the impression she'd be fighting this battle alone.

She notices Ember's embarrassment as Wil enters the dormitory, so Verrian responds with telepathy to Ember alone. I will never let it get that far. You need to understand that.

She maintains eye contact just a tiny bit longer to drive this sentiment home before turning to answer Wil. "Yes, I think it's best for us to all bunk down together, for safety. Unless our new party members prefer privacy for their first night with us."

Yelnar is pleased to see his Mother with renewed purpose and vigour. He promises to try and send word when he can. He wonders if the Guardian might have knowledge on how to heal her, but knows that given its views on magic, he would need to build more trust before he could ask the question.

On arrival, he helps setup camp, gives Ember a fist bump, then potters around to see if there is anything he can fix. That done, he waits and meditates. He finds it very difficult since leaving the Preserve, still pondering the meaning of the Guardian’s last message. Is he the Storm or the Stone?

Elora is glad to be on the road again, although it is unfortunate so many of their party had to split. After some reassurance however Elora feels comforted enough to leave the issue alone, and treks onward. The warped country is certainly curious enough, although she keeps her guard up. Pip occasionally flies off and returns with something of interest: a berry, some strange herb, a clump of moss, and whatever else his tiny body can carry. Sometimes he pushes it in her face, wanting her to eat it; she doesn't refuse any of his "requests", although it's clear on her face at times it she would prefer not to.

By the time they reach Viamard Elora feels all traveled out for now, feeling a yearning for some nice rest. Still, there are certain matters she must attend to: just before entering Viamard Elora holds Pip in her hand, and is relaying some very important instructions. "Okay Pip, we can't take things in here, they belong to people. You can bring things from the country, but not from here." She pats him slightly, not wanting to seem like she's scorning. Pip very clearly nods in understanding and flaps onto her hat, so Elora decides she has to trust him.

When they reach their camp she will help set up things, going out to gather a little firewood for them. Afterwards she quietly reads her novel full of short stories unless someone asks for her, heeding Verrain's warning by choosing not to engage in any arcane activities. Now I can learn what the wolf pack was so afraid of. She resumes reading where she left off.

OOC:
All right, whenever Coreene and Uelten are ready to make their entrance, go right ahead! Looks like generally speaking, the others'll be in one of the cabins, with smoke coming out of the chimney to indicate the occupied one.

The journey had been long but refreshing. They had considered much but come to no conclusions. The seeming round up of magic sensitive people bode not well for either of them, nor for Hara and their friends and loved ones. And leaving Marana was a blade to the gut no matter how they spun it. The helplessness was a burden Uelten tried to share with Coreene, to ease her pain as will as his. You're a minstrel, not a hero. It is yours to tell the tale, not to shape it. College of Opal words, not his. Shine teachings didn't stick. Except, they hasn't been heroic, had they?
----
Swan peers at the thorn hole passage, and says, "Ladies first," bowing gracefully. He had briefly considered throwing himself into possible harms way first, but Coreene had shown herself to be a capable traveler, and needed only self assurance. Such as that nurtured by trust.

He stands back and after she passes through, coaxes the horses to follow.

The world outside the city saddened the druid. While she had been outside of the wards for a few years now, it still pained her to see the natural world in such a sorry state. Uelten's words had somewhat eased Coreene's heart about their decision to leave Hara. She still yearned to turn her horse around and return to the city, but knew she she could do little good without help.
She smiles at Uelten and rides ahead of him through the path in the thorns, making their way up to the retreat.

Reaching the apex of the hill and seeing the smoke coming from one of the cabins, Coreene hops off her horse and calls out. "Hello?"
Aug 28, 2019 12:07 am
"I hope your mystical voice pocket gave you the proper instructions," Swan says dubiously. "Do you know how to make contact with the prophesied ones?"

Ember perks up.

Hey, does anyone hear anything?
Aug 28, 2019 12:20 am
At the sound of the voice calling, "Hello?" Verrian reaches out telepathically, sharing Coreene? and heading out the door of the cabin.

Coreene nearly collapses upon hearing her name. It had been so long since she had received such communication, that she had suppressed the longing, but it all came flooding back. Yes? Yes, this is Coreene. What is your name? She sends back quickly, not able to stop the flood of happiness, relief, and curiosity from accompanying the message.
