Clinging to the bricks, knuckles white, Ishmee quietly pushed open the shutters and crawled in the window. Her hands touched the floor first and then she walked her legs down the stones until she was on all fours in her bedroom. In the dark of the room she could see the big bed prepared for her and her sisters. Shara and Lilly were already in the bed where Ishmee was supposed to be. One of the girls, Shara probably, was gently snoring.
It was the middle of the night, and the Sisters of Light were being kept to a strict schedule while they were in Curnbrey Citadel. These girls weren't actual sisters; they were young acolytes to Pelor from the small but strategic kingdom of Drury Pass. Their oldest sister, Everly Light, had her own room of course. She was the one who had been deemed "the best and the brightest." It was she who had been summoned to the Citadel. The other sisters, including Ishemee, were simply here as part of her entourage.
Ishmee stood quietly for a second to be sure that there were no sounds coming from the hallway. Their Matron was a stern woman, and she kept a close eye on the girls. When she was sure it was safe, Ishmee began to strip off her clothes. She wanted to get some sleep at least. The Matron would pull her ears if she fell asleep during her studies.
"Where did you go?" The quiet little whisper came from the bed. Lilly pulled down the covers and stuck out her head. "What did you do?"
"Hush!" Ishmee whispered. She pulled off her tunic and fought back a sneeze. It was covered in dust and cobwebs and smelled of ancient stone. She walked over to the bed and knelt down to look her little sisters Lilly in the face. "I was in the basements again. I found a way in. Scoot over."
"You did!?!" Lilly exclaimed. Ishmee put her hand over Lilly's mouth to quiet her exclamation. Lilly was only ten. Being quiet was difficult for her under the best of circumstances. Shara stirred in her sleep for a moment but then went back to her quiet snoring. Once she was quieted, Lilly said, "I won't scoot. I don't want to sleep in the middle. It's too hot."
"Fine," Ishmee said rolling her eyes. "And I did. I found a way into the catacombs. I'll tell you all about it tomorrow."
"How did you get back here without getting caught by the Matron?" Lilly asked, eyes wide in the darkness.
"I climbed up the tower," Ishmee said. A self-satisfied grin spread wide across her face. "On the outside. All the way up."
"Wow," Lilly said in awe.
Ishmee stood and began undoing her belt. Her skin stuck to her leathers of the borrowed breeches. She was covered in sweat.
At that same moment, there was the THUNK of a door just outside in the hallway. The Matron was up! Both Ishmee and Lilly gasped in unison. Ishmee pushed her breeches down to the floor and kicked her tunic and pants under the bed. Lilly rolled over to the middle of the bed, and Ishmee climbed in and pulled the covers up to her chin and over Lilly's head. Both she and Lilly pretended to be asleep.
The door to their room cracked open, and the stern, angular face of the Matron appeared in the pale light from the hallway. She looked about the room for what felt like an eternity. Ishmee put her hand on Lilly's arm under the covers reassuringly.
After a few moments the Matron closed the door and went down the hall to check on Everly. Both Lilly and Ishmee breathed a sigh of relief. Lilly rolled over to face Ishmee under the covers.
"Do you have any more signs?" Lilly asked as quietly as she could.
Ishmee nodded and pulled the covers back so Lilly could see the green rune-like lines that had scrolled across her chest and down to her stomach. "They are growing," Ishmee said.
"What does they mean?" Lilly asked.
"I have no idea,"Ishmee said, still grinning from ear to ear.
