Currently learning about Warhammer 40,000 lore, and i know a little already. This is making me want to try a Warhammer 40, 000 game if anyone was thinking about running one. I'd be completely new and probably need help but I think it could be interesting. (Keep in mind i know nothing about Warhammer pen and paper games)

I run a couple of Warhammer fantasy games but not 40k

Hmm...my knowledge with warhammer fantasy is limited to a little bit of the total war games that I've seen. I'm may be interested in one if you ever needed someone.

There are a bunch of novels that are out there but . . . If you're interested in lore primarily you're going to want to get a hold of the rule books for the wargames. They are -densely- packed with lore and maps and names and places and absolutely nothing directly helpful for running a RPG in terms of plot but great for avoiding situations like "The dark necromancer, uh, I need a name . . . Steve? Yeah, the dark necromancer Steve called forth his army of the dead . . ."

The Warhammer systems are, admittedly, super crunchy though so modding to another system might be good, if you want . I usually use Pathfinder myself or Feng Shui with all damage results doubled to make it more dangerous.

Oooh, thanks for the advice!

Although, to be fair, sometimes those average names are fun. As a recurring villain I had 'Josh the Necrodancer' who was a Bard with the Dirge Bard archetype. He would follow the party, trying to join them as a friend but -constantly- trying to help them with his necromantic powers which, in Warhammer, are -always- evil.

I think "dark heresy2" is the RPG for the 40k universe. I ran a starter game a while back for some friends. I still have the books somewhere.

I'm with you, Melanqolia. I'm fascinated by the Warhammer 40k lore but know very little about it. I've read the first of the novels in the Horus Heresy line, but that one book didn't really give any insight into anything other than the human spacers.

Your best bet for both Fantasy and 40k is to really check out the rulebooks for the armies. You could honestly fit all the gameplay information from one of those things on a handful of flash cards and the rest is all fluff and artwork. Which is -not- an insult, btw.

Yeah, Luetin09 is another good 40K lore channel.

There's several WH40K games that cover different power levels (much the same setup as Fantasy Flight's Star Wars stuff, only less compatible.

In rough order of power level, they are:
Rogue Trader is essentially street-level civilian stuff.
- It is, in my opinion, the most interesting, but also the most deadly.
Only War is for soldiers in the Imperial Guard.
Dark Heresy lets you play an acolyte, but make sure you use 2.0, cuz 1.0 is a hot mess.
Black Crusade is for servants of the Dark Gods.
Deathwatch is for elite Space Marines.

If you run Rogue Trader, let me know, I'll hop in.

Okey, thanks. I doubt I'll be running any games in at least the far near future. Still learning everything

But Rogue Trader and Only War seem cool

Right?

Yeah! Guardsmen because well...you are just one in a faceless many, a number too large to record. Rogue Traders because I'm kinda a sucker for being a 'normal' person and not some super mega death lord
