Big mail notice on home page

I realized, its pretty easy to not notice if you get a private message from someone. When you're using PHPbb, if you have new or unread mail, it puts up a big box on the index page. I was thinking about putting up a big box you can't miss on the homepage, and maybe on the index page as well. Thoughts?

people love shiny things that blink. they are drawn to them. i swear it will work, but people will never want to leave the home/index page. conversely make it a picture of a cat with a letter..
