Kalam Makhir, Elven Arcane Duelist

While we will retain the shared Character Creation thread for discussing the characters a a group, these individual threads are meant serve as a place to talk about character development as the story progresses. In addition to game mechanics progression, we can talk about your personal story arc here. Where would you like to see your character go? What will they discover and achieve, and how will they change? That sort of thing.

Kalam Makhir, Elven Arcane Duelist
evecar_solaris says:
I was thinking I would be from either Bimar or Hiptos. I grew up as an orphan and was brought up at the monastery after trying to pickpocket shifu Qian. He saw I had potential and decided to take me under his wing.

He was the son of Morgeana Makhir and Alazar Ababa in Hiptos. As such Kalam would want for nothing. Later in life though Kalam grew bored with the life of a merchants son. He would often go out in disguise as a paupers kid, just to play with the other kids. He soon learned the art of a cut purse. Though he didn't need the money, he often gave it to his friends. After Kalam tried to pickpocket shifu Qian, the old master saw he had potential and decided to take him under his wing.

Shifu Qian Master of Sky style of martial arts schools, was my master. When ever we would visit the other schools, we would hold sparing sessions. I often participated in those, that's how I met Wu Meng. Though not sure if he remembers me.
I have heard about his shifu, and went to pay our respects. My own master then sent me out to find Wu Meng, but neglected to tell me why.

The Monastery of the Sky is a flying, crystal temple. It never stays in one place. Shifu Qian accepts deserving disciples not only from Qing'lai, but from all over the world. Here is a version of the map showing the Monastery of Sky floating off the continent's west coast.

So teachings of Shifu Qian, I would say are akin to Confucius.
Primary teaching is "Ignorance is the night of the mind, but a night without moon or star. Stars are holes in the sky through wich the infinite shine, and the sun and moon shine on all without partiality."

Secondary teachings are "The superior person acts before he speaks, and afterwards speaks according to his actions. The faults of a superior person are like the sun and moon. They have their faults, and everyone sees them; they change and everyone looks up to them."

Words to live by "Only the wisest and stupidest of people never change."

Words to take away "You are the sky, everything else is just the weather."

Kalam:
How does it feel when you weave magic with your blades? From where do you draw this power? In what ways is it beautiful and strange?

How has Shifu Qian's teachings influenced your fighting style?
Sep 17, 2019 12:59 pm
It feels ecstatic, like a tingling sensation running through my body as the blades become an extension of my being. Lightly glowing blue sand runs off the blade edges and lingers in the air slightly before dissipating. When I preform majorly overt magics, my blades act as my hands and weave complex geometric designs in the air while the sand lingers until the spell is complete or I stop the casting.
The power is drawn from my own time or life force albeit the end of it. I look older for a bit when using as my life gets incrementally shorter. Of course the more powerful the spell the more noticeable the effects.
Its beautiful how the sands follow and trace my blades. It's strange in the way it ages me briefly but doesn't weaken me unless greater magics are used.
Shifu Qian's teachings have taught me to use thought before action but to act decisively. To be truthful and fight with honor those who fight honorably. Be fluid in a fight, don't just pummel each other.

Also I would like to implement the explorers guild into my character but I need some help with that. Like do you have something in mind for them? Do they have their own goals unbeknownst to its individuals? Or are they just a simple guild set on mapping out the world?
As with everything else in the Opal City, there is a constant power struggle within the guild. Without a doubt, the guild has its own agenda unbeknownst to its membership.

I was imagining the Sky Monastery flying over Qing'lai and dropping off Kalam to find Meng. Kalam would have spent most of his life in the sky perfecting his bladework. In my head, the 64 Disciples of the 8 Masters lead very cloistered lives. All that to say I don't see Kalam as a member of an Explorers' Guild based out of Qing'lai.

But maybe you guys imagine it differently - I'd love to hear what you envision.

All of this is perfectly fine. I was writing what feels right for the character.

But that's what we want: what feels right to you. Tell us about what Kalam might have seen/done/experienced outside the monastery, and how might the Explorer's Guild have played a part in that? How long has Kalam been in the Opal City? How did he know to search for Wu Meng there?

Shifu Qian sometimes visits other villages for supplies and foods. He would often bring a disciple that was to do the task of moving goods. Very rarely do we visit the other schools. When we do only The head student gets to represent the respective schools. The explorers guild could have been present during one of the sparing matches. Or might have seen me dealing with ruffians who mistakenly thought Shifu Qian and I were easy marks. Seeing my prowess in combat they approached me, but I declined their initial offer. Having more to learn under shifu Qian's tutelage.
Kalam got to the city shortly after we paid our respects to Shifu Gen. Kalam has no idea about the scrolls or what they contain. He was told to find the last of Gen's disciple's, that he held something important and was to keep it safe. After some time he leaned of the wear abouts of Wu Meng and sought him out.

Perfect! Okay, very soon, I'll give you your cue to join the main story. The current scene involving Wei, the ring, and Iko needs to play out first. In the meantime, best of luck in the flashback match against Wu Meng!

OOC:
some back ground
Kalam Makhir was the son of Morgeana Makhir, an ex slave. Her master was Ali Ababa, he was a wealthy merchant who made his fortune in trade of rare woods.
Morgeana Makhir was a slave who won her freedom by defending her master from would be bandits. Stumbling across a plot by accident, against her master. She had found a large number of bandits hiding in the storage barn of the property. While none of them noticed her, she locked the shed and fired the building. Killing all the bandits inside, all save one. The leader was disguised as a visiting merchant in the house. Once he found out what happened, he escaped in the chaos.
After a few years he returned disguised as another merchant. While Ali Ababa and his nephew Alazar was fooled by the disguise, Morgeana wasn't. She recognized the bandit leader but played like she didn't. When asked to entertain the guest, Morgeana preformed a dance. Before doing so, she hid a Janbiya on her person. Near the end of the dance she struck. Plunging the dagger into the bandits heart, killing him instantly. She then quickly explained why she had done so to Ali.
Ali graciously set Morgeana free, having saved his life and his family twice. After Morgeana was set free by Ali, he offered his nephews hand in marriage in return for saving their lives, tieing her to the family.
A few months after the wedding Kalam was born. He was the son of Morgeana Makhir and Alazar Ababa. As such Kalam would want for nothing. Later in life though Kalam grew bored with the life of a merchants son. He would often go out in disguise as a paupers kid, just to play with the other kids. He soon learned the art of a cut purse. Though he didn't need the money, he often gave it to his friends.
One day a large floating palace visited their city. It wasn't a common site but it was known to visit the city every few years. It often brought strange trade goods and rare spices, though very few ever saw anyone from the palace. The coin that flowed through the city made them not question it.
During one outting with his pauper friends, he chose an easy mark. An old man with a younger one in tow, they were flashing around a lot of coin, buying supplies.
It caught Kalam's eye, so he made his move. He "accidently" bumped into the old timer, his hand deftly plucking the purse away, like a ripe fruit. The purse was heavy, Kalam noticed, as he tucked it away and continued walking.
Then he felt the wind brush past his shoulder. The old man was in front of him. Kalam, a bit impressed, took to a side ally, running like the wind. As he rounded a corner there was the old man. With this Kalam heard feet hitting the gravel behind him, he looked over his shoulder at the young man.
Kalam then kicked a bucket at the young man head, as he ducked, Kalam used his back as a spring board to get on the nearest roof. As he ran across the roof, he looked back over his shoulder, thinking he lost his pursuers. As he turned back around, there was the old man. Kalam skidded to a halt, in stunned disbelief. "There's no way!" he proclaimed, the old man grinned at him. "How?" he asked of the old man. "Come, I'll show you." the old man answered.

As you are probably aware, I am currently running a game set in Hiptos during a period long after the decline or downfall of its once-great civilization. You're free to define for this game where we are in that timeline, whether this during the rise of Hiptos as a world power, during the zenith of its power, or long after.
