The Protagonists

Captain Tabitha McCurry
ISSUE: After a controversial decision ended her first command, a Starfleet captain seeks redemption via a new command that some in power were against her getting. Through deft political maneuvering and the help of a long-time mentor, she has her second chance, but now she wants prove the people that stood in her way wrong... if not get outright revenge on them. She constantly struggles to balance her better and lesser natures.
IMPULSE: She drives her crew hard and herself harder in an effort to maintain her focus on the mission, but when an opportunity arises to gain something in service of her need for revenge, she has a tendency to take it even if it could jeopardize the mission.
EDGE: Doctorate in Astrophysics - Tabitha is not only an astrophysicist, she actually studied the Tangle years ago during a mission that ended in near-disaster. That experience is how Adm. Alvarez managed to get her assigned command of the Hodgkin over the hand-picked candidate of Adm. Hamilton.
EDGE: Opportunistic Politician - expert at dangling incentives and twisting arms to get what she needs... or wants.
CONNECTION: Admiral Sonia Alvarez - recommended McCurry for the command of the Hodgkin. McCurry's long-time mentor and the former captain of the first ship she was posted to.

First Officer Pleiades Hamilton
ISSUE: After a lifetime of living in her now-deceased sister's shadow, never truly seeing her own worth, Pleiades hesitantly took this assignment with the hope that at least she could be herself for once - only to find out she was a replacement.
IMPULSE: She pushes away crew members out of fear her true self will disappoint the others.
EDGE: Salutatorian - Pleiades spent countless hours in the Academy poring over every single book she could find, even the fiction books in the library, so that she would graduate at the top of her class. It almost worked....
CONNECTION: Admiral Atlas Hamilton - Pleiades' father and the admiral overseeing the mission of the USS Hodgkin.
CONNECTION: Lieutenant Zuto Hironaka - a security officer now assigned to the Hodgkin, Zuto was one of the many crew members who was saved by the heroic actions of Pleiades' late sister Calypso. Pleiades assumes that his attempts to flirt with her are the usual - someone trying to use her as a replacement for the irreplaceable Cal.

Chief Engineer Avery Edison
ISSUE: This assignment is a step backwards, as far as Avery's concerned. Instead of the stepping stone she'd been hoping for to advance her career to the command track, she's stuck being chief engineer - again - because of her previous experience with the Inphirians.
IMPULSE: Doesn't even try to seem invested in the people she's helping or working with, always muttering about how she's getting back to a "real" ship first chance she gets.
EDGE: Well Read - Researched the Hodgkin and the alien "uncertainty drive" thoroughly. She's confident she can fix anything and everything on this piece of junk.
EDGE: Fake It Till You Make It - When the going got tough, a little improvisation helped them through Starfleet Academy just fine. Surely this is the same.
CONNECTION: Oobadek - Feels conflicted about him. On one hand, the Inphirian is living proof that this assignment will amount to something, but on the other hand Avery struggles to remain positive due to bitterness.

Ship's Counselor Edgar Mitsk
ISSUE: Quit med school after his bad advice resulted in his mother's death by poisoning. Switched to research psychology precisely to never have to treat patients or give advice that could get someone hurt, but now has been drafted to serve as the captain's adviser and counselor to the crew of the Hodgkin.
IMPULSE: Can't commit to a diagnosis or a recommendation. Always leaves wiggle room because he fears harming his patient or giving the captain erroneous advice.
EDGE: Fast Talker - Developed to talk his way out of situations requiring him to commit. Believes if he dazzles them with bullshit, they might not realize he hasn't actually told them what he thinks they should do.
EDGE: Human Lie Detector - Has a knack for being able to tell when someone is holding something back.
CONNECTION: Jessica Green - Former girlfriend who helped him through the guilt and grief when his mother died. She's a member of the research team Edgar was leading in Gaia up to now.

Inphirian Liaison Officer Oobadek
ISSUE: As an outsider, they are both highly suspicious and suspected.
IMPULSE: They compensate for this by trying overly hard to ingratiate themselves to others.
EDGE: Inphirian Tech Expert - An Inphirian science officer specializing in analysis of new technologies. Worked at the premier Inphirian research institute.
EDGE: Federation Liaison - Highly trained in diplomatic protocols.
CONNECTION: Captain McCurry - Saved the captain's life in that previous incident years ago.
