In a remote area just outside of neutral space lies an entanglement field, a strange and dangerous phenomenon accidentally discovered by a Federation starship six years ago. Entering this field subjects all matter to the uncertainty principle, tossing it in an unpredictable direction at the speed of light. In the Federation, this phenomenon is referred to as the Tangle.
The Tangle
Discovering the Tangle led to meeting the inhabitants of the planet Inphir, situated on the outskirts of the phenomenon. The mildly xenophobic Inphirians have a resource that could help the Federation cure a devastating disease, but an unfortunate incident led the Inphirians to cut off relations with the Federation.
Now, five years later, the Inphirians need Federation help to deal with a mysterious aggressor that seems to live within the Tangle. Armed with technology harvested from an alien ship that allows humans to enter and navigate the Tangle for periods of time, the crew of the experimental vessel USS Hodgkin attempt to track down the enemy of their would-be allies, avoid the neurologically harmful effect of the Tangle, and forge a lasting treaty with the Inphirians that will make possible a cure for a disease that has hit closer to home for the crew than most of them know.
