Episode 1 Scene 1a : The Arrival

Dec 25, 2019 5:56 pm
The trip to Far Reach was long and fraught with peril. On more than one occasion those being employed to protect the caravan definitely earned their keep be it wages at journeys end or safer passage to Boareskyr Bridge. However the last leg of the journey proved to be the worst. For upon the constantly wind swept fields of the Sky Plateau the group was set upon by a large contingency of raiders. It took a massive effort upon the protectors behalf to finally repel them leaving many badly wounded and a few dead. Still the caravan was able to make the safety of Titan's Cleave. It was rumored that a Titan's Great Sword had created the break in the Sky Plateau and it appeared that the rumor may have well been true for it resembled a jagged gaping wound. Still from there forward the most dangerous element was just the occasional falling rock as the caravan descended down through Titan's Cleave into the valley of Far Reach.

As the caravan begins moving out of the Cleave and into the valley proper one could see the fabled Boareskyr Bridge in the distance and next it the rather ramshackle town that rests at its southern end. The warmth of the valley was quite noticeable compared to the colder air of the Sky Plateau and one could imagine that at times it might actually it uncomfortably warm at times. Still the weather in the valley seemed to be pleasant enough right now. And the hills the caravan travels through peaceful enough. One could tell when one was getting close to the village as even a few farmhouses had already sprung up indicating that some protection was given to the region immediately south of the village.

Upon arrival just short of the town but in sight of the large wooden sign labeled "Southbridge Village" the caravan pauses for inspection. A small contingency of archers flank the caravan on either side while four seasoned looking veterans walk the length of the caravan two a side and a fifth with a writing board speaks with the caravan master up front. Their surcoats over their chain mail denote them as followers of different deities. The one up front who is obviously a well-groomed Tiefling wears an equally fine surcoat of Kelemvor while one of the walkers who is obviously a Dragonborn wears the surcoat of Bahamut, next to him is a Human wearing the surcoat of Torm, on the otherside is an Elf wearing the surcoat of Correllon and along side him a Half-Elf wearing the surcoat of Lathander. While a mixed group of dieties even the most unknowledgable in religion would easily note that they are all dieties associated with law and order. Perhaps these were some of the actual seven Paladins that are rumored to be the anchor of government and safety here.

On their walk back up from the rear of the caravan the Dragonborn states in Humanish in a deep booming voice that is easily heard by all. "We here welcome you all to Southbridge Village. Please refrain from excessive roudiness as that may get you a visit to our wonderful stockade. If any of you are planning to stay on please report to the garrison in the next few days as all long term residents are expected to actively help with the defenses of the village. Other than that we hope you enjoy your stay here in Southbridge Village."
OOC:
If you wish to explore the village let me know otherwise we can assume the three of you agreed to go to the garrison straight away

Lex appears to be a red dragonborn, but there is something off about his appearance, and any dragonborn would recognise it instantly in a "aren't you a little short to be a stormtrooper" kind of way. His clothing, once well made, has clearly not survived the journey well, but gives the observant a clue to his background as being from the merchant class. He has very inquisitive eyes which dart from source to source and he is constantly making notes in one of several journals he carries with him.

He doesn't have any weapons, but he uses a staff as a walking stick and around his neck is a platinum scale, a sign of his devotion to Bahumut, the Platinum Dragon. When he walks you hear the constant clinking of glasses and suspect he must have several vials stowed in his backpack. As the guards make their inspection he buries his face in one of his notebooks and steals occassional hurried glances at the guards.

He nods as they say he should make himself known to the guards.
OOC:
I'm quite happy to move on to reporting to the garrison.

As the "welcoming committee" walks around the caravan, Brindel eyes them with an intensity that equals their own. The dwarf walks to the front of the caravan, the surcoat with Gulthyn's symbol obvious beneath his travelling robe. Brindel removes his helmet revealing short, trimmed brown hair with black stripes that match those found in his beard. He addresses the leader with calm confidence, "Thank you for the warm greeting. The garrison will be one of our first stops. Do you have any recommendations for weary travelers to rest their heads?"
Dec 27, 2019 8:31 pm
OOC:
Okay that sounds like Brindel ought to perhaps make a perception check. Also by leader do you mean the spokes dragonborn or the tiefling talking to the caravan master?

Being one that understands the ways Brindel can tell that what they are doing is scanning for overt evil and while this does not mean that the less than savory are going to be found it does indicate that overt evil does not get in easily.

Upon approaching the rather tall dragonborn and speaking to him, the dragonborn looks down upon Brindel but in a way that makes Brindel feel he is accustomed to perhaps talking to others much shorter than he. And his response indicates that perhaps even more specifically shorter folk such as he as he replies in dwarven, "Your most welcome and good to hear that the garrison will be high on your list. As for a place to stay, their are several fairly good Inns within but while doing Garrison business we encourage all to make use of the barracks. Further it lets newcomers, such as yourself, get a feel for the village before committing to any particular establishment."

OOC:
Quick question: do we know each other still (are we a team)? If we don't, I'll edit the last paragraph.
To the side from all main points of commotion, hiding in half-shadows cast by a lonely oak tree near the road, a tiefling leans against the tree trunk, watching the surroundings with a mixture of serenity and boredom. Clad in a bright red coat, with a golden brooch attached at the front and a purple cravat wrapped around his neck, twigs of mistletoe weaved into his hair, the tiefling looks every part out of place in this caravan. With a theme of nature in his accessories - and with two scimitars at his belt, - he can be correctly thought to be a druid, but he lacks something to look like one of the local druid circles.

A number of town guards send suspicious glances towards the tiefling, which he answers with a smile and a sparkle of mirth in his blue eyes, obediently allowing the bringers of law to examine his equipment should they desire to. Still, Egret wishes for the inspection to be over, and when the group of guards finally judge the caravan safe and make their way back for the gates, he sighs in relief, straightening up and briefly dusting his coat. He is not sure where to head out now, however, torn between avoiding the stifling air of the town and following the practical thought of obeying the recommendation of reporting to the garrison.

Deciding to bide his time for now, Egret moves closer, his eyes catching the sight of the conversation between the dragonborn guard and his own dwarven companion, Brindel. The tiefling tilts his head, watching the discussion from afar.

Yes the concept is not only do the three of you know each other fairly well but have all agreed to remain as a team upon arrival to Boareskyr Bridge -- and this goes for any of the new players that may join -- and if they are delayed I will help them explain why they were delayed joining you.

Okay, thanks! And Egret's fine with following Brindel and Lex to the garrison. :D

Brindel continues to talk to the Dragonborn. "A wise suggestion, sir, thank you. And be assured that my companions and myself would be glad to help defend the village if the need arises. What sort of troubles do you face in this area?"

The Dragonborn continues in Dwarven, "Well first I think ole Kustaa," Brindel recognizes that as a Dwarven name, "has lots of tasks he needs done and I believe those tasks all concern making this a safer place for all. As for troubles well other than keeping the peace, there are undead that need eradicating now and again as well as some other evil critters that need eradicating that wander to close but again Kustaa and Weimin they handle all that stuff I am just here to cut the head off evil every time its ugliness pops up."

"Friends!" A slim-looking woman with golden hair and a friendly smile stepped forward just behind the others. "My apologies for being a little late. I was held up helping an old woman cross the road." She smiled at her own little joke, the irony being that in a place such as Far Reach, at Southbridge Village no less, there were hardly any roads with heavy traffic that needed navigating.

Feliani stood there, appraising her old acquaintances as if she hadn't seen them for a while. Although in truth she had been traveling with them these past weeks. She appeared still fresh from her travels, the glow of the weather still radiant on her fair skin. She appeared well equipped for their next task, swords sheathed on either side of her belt, a light leather jerkin fitted in place, and a cloak for comfortable travel and also embellished with the symbol of Sune Firehair all around its hem.

She noted Brindel's vigliance, "Brother Brindel, are we to expect danger already?" She rested a hand on a hilt in response, and looked to the others.

Brindel shudders ever so slightly. Even his own sister didn't refer to him as "brother," but humans have their own ways that he is still getting used to. "Excuse me," Brindel says to the Dragonborn in Dwarvish, then turns to Feliani.

"Not with such fine village guards as these, friend Feliani," Brindel says in Common. "Undead have been spotted in this area. We must be wary of them and other creatures in this untamed land. I took the liberty of offering our assistance if warranted. I hope no one minds."
Dec 31, 2019 12:00 pm
OOC:
I'm not sure if Lex is next to all of us or not, correct me if needed.
Seeing Feliani making her way towards Brindel, Egret straightens up and gets closer as well, moving to stand beside his companions - yet still a few steps back. He gives a polite nod and a smile to the guards when they see him, but doesn't seem interested in talking, only listening to the conversation with a slight smile, his tail waving behind him in an expression of thoughtfulness. After a few moments, somewhat subconsciously the druid shifts towards Lex, perhaps feeling more at peace next to the one as quiet as he is.

The tiefling perks up when Brindel mentions potential need of their assistance, but stays silent - although now he looks more focused on the dwarf, as if expecting to hear a battle plan to follow. The strategy is not his strong suit, and neither are the matters of interacting with people, so Egret stays content following the other's lead, trusting Brindel to formulate a strategy for their actions in the village. After all, the only reason why he is still here is the desire to follow his companions, and it's only fitting to let them have the reins.

Lex will be actively trying to avoid the scrutiny of the guards. He will reason that there is safety and anonymity in a group, so he will be near the others with his hood covering most of his features. He notices his friend's approach. Egret will see that Lex is in the middle of drawing a rough sketch of the town.
He nods as his friend approaches and makes no attempt to hide his work.

Brindel turns to the Dragonborn, continuing to speak in Common, "Pardon the interruption, good sir, but I don't want to leave my companions in the dark." He turns back. "Friends, our first step after the caravan is safely inside should be to go the garrison and check in with a dwarf named Kustaa. We'll rest from our travels there, and if we decide to stay, we can decide on a suitable inn. For now, there is no present danger outside we should be concerned about."

Facing the Dragonborn once more, Brindel says, "Once the inspection is over, we will be heading inside. Would you be so kind as to give us the description and location of the garrison building?"
Jan 1, 2020 11:21 pm
The Dragonborn seems more than patient as he stands there. In the meantime the archer contingent is heading back to the gate along with the Elf and fFolk knight. The Human knight on the other hand walked over to the Tiefling and was talking with the caravan leader as well.

At Brindel's last statement the Dragonborn replies, "Well unless you have goods to declare or are directly employed long term by one of the merchants you can head on in. After you pass through the gates the garrison is off to your right across the bridge, its kind of hard to miss but the guards will of course ask you nature of business, have you check your weapons and give you an escort before they let you cross that bridge."
Jan 2, 2020 1:14 am
Egret narrows eyes at Lex's sketch, his gaze tracing the lines and then flickering up to look at the town itself, towering in the distance. The druid hums as he looks back at his companion's notebook. "Have you happened to be in these lands before, friend Alexander, or are you simply talented at capturing the architecture?" The tiefling keeps his voice low, not wishing to attract attention of the guards. "It looks recognizable, despite being a quick work."

He looks at the gates again and adds somewhat wistfully, to no one in particular: "Shall we always stay in inns, amidst civilization..." The druid sighs, his hand absent-mindely bothering the brooch on his cravat.

Brindel replies to the Dragonborn, "Thank you. You have been most helpful as we have no intention of transgressing any laws nor customs. In that regard, I ask for one bit of clarification: when you say 'check your weapons,' do you mean an inspection or a hold for safekeeping?"
Jan 2, 2020 2:57 am
"Well I guess more along the lines of hold for safe keeping, as no one not currently part of the Garrison are allowed to bring weapons into the Fort which will go for any spell casters as well. Still no need for concern we just get a lot of folks coming and going and the fort would be a prime target for some who would like to take this region. As such we like to keep new folks in check until they have joined the Garrison right and proper and thus have official business within the fort."
Jan 2, 2020 3:45 am
"I understand." Brindel pauses and sighs. "The battleaxe that is strapped to my back is a, . . . ," he pauses again, trying to think of an appropriate term in Common, ". . . family heirloom. I cannot willingly give it to another, even on a temporary basis. It would be a violation of tradition and, more importantly, my oaths as a paladin devoted to Gorm Gulthun. Would I be able to discuss my situation to Kustaa at the bridge guard post?"

"Hmm..." he says as gets a look of concentration, "well... I guess I am not busy right now." He then looks over at the Human Knight, Tiefling Knight, and Caravan master and calls out, "Yo Katsmon," the Human Knight looks over, "need your assistance over here." Katsmon nods and briskly walks over. Upon arrival the Dragonborn says, "We are going to escort this group to see Kustaa" Katsmon nods. The Dragonborn looks at Brindel, "Sound good to you?"
Jan 2, 2020 8:14 am
"Yes. I am much obliged," Brindel responds.

Then he turns to his companions and announces, "I need to speak with the garrison leader. Egret, Lex, Feliani . . . please join me if you desire. We will be discussing what we can and can't bring into the village. Otherwise we will meet at the gate. I prefer not to split up before entering."
Jan 2, 2020 8:32 am
Lex nods, puts away his journal and moves as if to follow Brindel.
Jan 2, 2020 1:20 pm
"No spellcasters allowed in the fort?" Feliani gasped in mock horror. "I guess I'm going to be left out of all the fun then." She followed it up with a bit of good natured sarcasm, eyeing whether the Dragonborn who had been addressing them had a sense of humor or not. She didn't really want to be left out of what appeared to be the requirement of getting clearance from the garrison leader to operate in this place, especially not if the rest of her companions were going. "I'm coming along, in peace." She added and winked.

DeJoker sent a note to BedzoneII
The Dragonborn glances at Feiliani but it is hard to tell if he is kidding or being serious when he says, "No I did not say, that spell casters cannot come into the fort, I said they have to check their weapons just like everyone else. Still there will be no need for concern as no one will be left out and everyone will be allowed to keep their weapons, that is unless you would like to experience being a weaponless spell caster."
Jan 2, 2020 7:27 pm
Egret murmurs something vaguely agreeable, stepping forward to flank Brindel and Feliani and eyeing the gates with mild curiosity. The druid seems willing to follow, although he frowns briefly at the mention of weapon inspection - but the expression passes as he hears that they can keep their weapons. Absent-mindely, he taps a hilt of one of his scimitars.

With his companions close by, Brindel seems more relaxed as they walk. He says to the Dragonborn, "Excuse me, but we never formally introduced ourselves. I am Brindel Truehand from the city of Citadel Adbar. To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?"

"Also, if you would be so kind, what is Kustaa's title? I would like to address him properly when we meet."

The Dragonborn walks with Brindel while Katsmon falls into the back of the group walking with whomever is in the back. One can tell that the Dragonborn is one who commands authority simply by way he casually walks and yet he seems rather easy going as he speaks, "Good to meet you Brindel Truehand of Reniuhm, I am Shahadar Righteous Paladin of Bahamut but please just call me Shahadar." At Brindel's second question Shahadar actually chuckles, "Well Brindel if you want to get on Kustaa's good side just call him Kustaa as he hates titles more than I do, however since you asked he is Kustaa Righteous Paladin of Moradin."
OOC:
Feel free to chat with either Shahadar or Katsmon as you move through the town -- also unless you are a spell caster of some sort you do not necessarily know how to read as reading is not actually all that common or necessary for that matter
Jan 3, 2020 4:01 pm
It does not take the group long to enter through the ramshackle yet rather sturdy looking gate. Up close one can see that the gates and the wall are quite sturdy they just appear to be shoddy due to their non-uniform lengths. Still the gates are not the first thing one notices as they get near as the odor wafts out to greet them first. The strong scent of animals, manure, cooking, campfire smoke, and earth all mix together creating a none civilized smell that while pungent is not necessarily unpleasant, especially for those who prefer outdoor living versus city living. The dirt packed streets are lined with make-shift board walks making it obvious that when the streets get wet they might not be easily navigable. The semi-sea of kaleidoscopic tents seem to make up the bulk of the interior accompanied by the din of the marketplace that they represent. Off in the distance rising above these tents like majestic wooden towers stand five wooden structures the signs hanging from them, due to their shape as they are too far away to make out clearly, indicating that they were Inns. The fact that these flat roofed structures actually stand taller than the walls lends to the sense that perhaps they are even used as towers when needed.
Jan 3, 2020 4:01 pm
The street splits and Shahadar leads the group towards the right and in the distance they can see the Fort nestled in between two of the Inns. Upon arriving at the bridge Shahadar pauses and looks back at Feiliani, "So miss would you care to experience being made weaponless?" Being Dragonborn it is hard to read Shahadar's face but his voice almost seemed to carry a slight measure of taunting tease.
Jan 3, 2020 11:27 pm
Would you like my staff as well? I doubt I could do much damage with it. Lex says dryly. On the way, Lex takes note of any signs written in the languages he can read (common, draconic, dwarven and elvish). He is also actively looking to see if there appears to be any apothecary, or shop that might deal in magical potions.
Jan 3, 2020 11:57 pm
At Lex's statement Shahadur looks over at him and shakes his head no, "No with spell casters the stick that some often carry is usually the least of ones concern but again you can keep all weapons."

One thing that Lex notices right off that besides the sign posted outside there are actually no signs with words on them anywhere in fact the only signs are the ones hanging on those five wooden structures. Still the place was rumored to be very transitory and signs tended to come along with permanency so not a big surprise.
Jan 4, 2020 11:13 am
"Good sir Shadadur, paladin of Bahamut, I'm beginning to think you're having a little jest at my expense for my misunderstanding." Feliani sidled up nearer to the dragonborn. "I assure you the caravaneers can vouch for my good intentions." Still smiling as she crossed the bridge with him, "Although propriety dictates I have to leave dear Jarret outside." Feliani had instructed her hawk familiar to be on its best behaviour as it circled high above them. That included no sudden hunting of rats and mice within the stockade grounds, so as not to alarm its residents.

Egret is following after the group, listening to the idle chatter with a small, but genuine smile of amusement. He let's others interact with the guards, instead focusing on watching the surroundings - not so much expecting an attack as just wishing to remember the way they follow, and curious about the weird settlement as well. He seems impressed by the tents the most, even pausing for a few moments to admire one with an especially saturated, deep red hue.
Jan 4, 2020 8:58 pm
Brindel smiles and nods a greeting to those who look their way as the group walks past the gate. He grey eyes keep watch for any village "ne'er do wells" (as his father called them), although the odds of anyone bothering them, or trying to attract their attention, were exceedingly slim given the guards' presence.

His companions knew there were just some things the good-natured Brindel never joked about: weapons, armor, traditions, payments, and ale topped the list.

DeJoker sent a note to FlyingSucculent
As the escorted group moves through the village they do draw curious looks from time to time but if there were any "ne'er do wells" amongst them it is hard to say, however it is definitely a mixing pot of races and nations.

At Feliani's statement Shahadur holds up a finger as if instructing a child and says slowly, "It is Righteous Paladin of Bahamut," then he waves that hand back and forth as in dismissal, "but seriously, Shahadur is just fine and... preferred. Still I think your missing out, being a weaponless spell caster is quite the experience I hear." This time Feliani is close enough to hear a soft nearly inaudible rumbling chuckle that comes from deep in Shahadur's throat.

@DeJoker If the note was meant for Brindel, you need to target the note to rpgventurer. I think everyone can see it.

Thanks its been corrected and no it was not targeted at Brindel ;) he is too short to see -- still I am sure it would be something Brindel would be interested in -- especially with that rather special love-hate relationship that exists between green-skins and stumpies ;) dwarves just loving to hate them and carve them up into little pieces
The group finally arrives at the bridge. Travel via the main streets within the village seems pretty easy as there appears to be only three. One that goes from the south gate to the north gate, one that comes off that road near the south gate and heads almost straight to the Fort and then another that goes from the Fort back to that road connecting with it near the north gate. However once you get off a main street the tents appear to be a haphazard maze of narrow walkways interspersed with small open areas where a tent once stood. The bridge itself which looks rather crude turns out to be very stable and probably capable of handling a pretty heavy load before even complaining.

Shahadur leads the group past the first set of guards and across the bridges expanse below it is just cliffs and dark water. On the opposite side is a wooden palisade with gate that is about half the height of the Forts 30 foot walls that encloses the area directly in front of the gatehouse itself. The stark difference between the wood and the old but very solid looking stone is quite noticeable making the palisade seem even more inferior than it is. This little courtyard of sorts is filled with a handful of men, numerous small barrels holding ammo and even a small catapult. However perhaps the most noticeable things within the courtyard sit just inside the gate on either side, a pair of sturdy tierces (aka @40 gallon barrel) painted bright red.

The group passes through this little courtyard uneventfully only drawing some glances from curious guards. They then pass under the open exterior portcullis through gatehouse and then under the interior portcullis. Those experienced in castle design could easily see the the murder holes and ceiling holes used to decimate any trapped units. The gatehouse opens into another courtyard that surrounds the 3 story fortified stone building that sits in the middle. If there were stables they were around back because they could not be seen from here. Sitting on the steps of of this building is a old looking Gnome smoking a pipe, he watches the group as they approach with seemingly casual interest.
Jan 5, 2020 6:49 am
The wizened old gnome puffing on a rather unusual pipe calls out, "Got some new recruits Sha or are these volunteers for me experiments?"
Jan 5, 2020 6:51 am
"No Kezzel these are recruits, although this one" Shahadur indicates Feiliani "might be keen on being one of your experimental subjects."
Jan 5, 2020 6:55 am
The old gnome seems to perk up noticeably, "Ya dunna say, ya dunna say." He looks over at Feiliani and asks with a near gleam in his eyes, "Tis dis be truth he be speakin lassy or wood he be justa pullin ole Kezzel layg?"

From close beside her Feiliani can again hear that soft nearly inaudible rumbling chuckle of Shahadur's.
Jan 5, 2020 12:15 pm
OOC:
It probably would've been more consequential if Brindel was the one to see them, since Egret has close to zero care about these things. XD (And I have no detailed knowledge about them either.)
The druid slows down his pace briefly when he notices an orc in the crowd, intrigued by a somewhat unusual passerby, but then shrugs and moves to catch up with the group. Being seen as a weird outlander himself in many places taught him to not judge by the cover, and besides, he didn't have anything against the orcs personally. Just another form of life, with a history not that different from the cultures that scorned them.

When they get to the courtyard of the fort, Egret tenses - the motion likely unnoticed by the soldiers, but obvious to his companions. He mutters something quietly, and pulls his coat tighter over his shoulders, speeding up so he can walk between Lex and Feliani. For some reason, it appears that the druid is uncomfortable here, more than in the town itself. He does look up when the gnome speaks, however, curiosity overcoming whatever other feelings he is having, chuckling at the exchange.

Fort seems pretty secure to me. Feliani thought to herself as she followed after the dragonborn as he let them through the palisade and into the fort proper. "Meister Kezzel? Feliani of High Moor." She did a small bow which looked more like a flourish. "Sir Shahadur and I were having an enjoyable conversation about the merits of being a weaponless wizard. I'm inclined to take him at his word if he is hinting at some marvelous experiment which would allow me to do so." Feliani pointed at her twin rapiers, "As you can see, I am constrained by these mundane blades. I would love to hear about your experiments." With that, she plonked herself down next to the gnome, and tried not to stare too hard at his strange pipe.

Egret obviously perks up as he hears Lex mentioning flora and fauna, prompting the tiefling to step forward as well. He makes a small bow towards the gnome. "I too would be much obliged if you shared information on the local nature, master Kezzel," the druid smiles brightly. "Egret, druid of the Circle of the Land, at your service." He glances at Lex briefly, doubt if he should have interrupted crossing his mind for a moment, but he shakes it off and straightens up. "I didn't have a chance to make acquaintance with the plant life of these lands yet."

OOC:
I concur FlyingSucculent but as I said Brindel was just too short to see it, still it was a rather unusual thing for Egret to see and not something he would have ever witnessed any where else.
Kezzel was a bit surprised by all the sudden attention but before he could respond to any of them, a gusty roar of laughter broke forth from the lips of Shahadur surprising everyone within ear shot and even startling a few. Even some guards with weapons readied rushed to see what was up.

"Oh now that was unexpected. Well Kez it appears you might have visitors later to your abode but for now I do not have the time to let you all chat with ole Kez since he would simply take all day. Still he is a rather a... non-stable part of the Forts environs so you will have ample time to seek him out with all your questions. Sorry Kez duty calls I must take your adoring fans to meet Kustaa." With that he walks up the short steps and opens one of the large doors. "Come now," he motions his head towards the opening, "we must be going."

Still a bit surprised by it all Kezzel seems very happy, "By all means, by all means, do drop by. For we can speak of many things," Kezzel becomes a bit animated as he strikes out poetically, "of leaves—" he points to Lex, "and seeds—" he points to Egret "and sealing-wax—" he points to Feliani "of additives—" he pulls his hand back palm up, "and rings" he closes his hand and turns it over and rests it on his knee as he squints and looks at each in turn as he says, "and why that river is utter black and whether snakes have wings." He then nods as he concludes, "But when you come—please do bring—a loaf of fresh baked bread, some pepper and vinegar we'd chiefly need, to compliment those oysters gathered freshly out of bed."
Jan 6, 2020 6:10 am
"Fare thee well, Kezzel," Brindel says as he follows Shahadur.
Jan 6, 2020 8:58 am
"I can contribute to those oysters too. Maybe later then." Feliani smiled, and then rejoined Shahadur by his side as they continued, warming up to the dutiful demeanor of the dragonborn. "It seems to me the security of this fort is no small matter. I can't wait to hear about the dangers of this place, but I'm guessing that's best discussed inside, away from prying ears."
Jan 6, 2020 11:37 am
Lex sighs disappointedly. Clearly mad. he whispers to Egret and Feliani after they are safely put of earshot.

"Eccentric maybe. Overdramatic for sure. Mad? Hmm..." Feliani whispered back.
Jan 6, 2020 1:12 pm
Corners of the mouth twitching, as if resisting a smile, Egret seriously adds: "Aren't we all, in a way?" He waves at Kezzel, and then turns to follow the others deeper into the fort, now focused on his thoughts of local nature.
Jan 8, 2020 8:27 am
As the group passes through the door it is only Brindel that notes that the door is actually textured stained stone and from his limited knowledge knows that such a door that size has to be set expertly in order to be opened with the ease that was used. Further he knows that this was something that got assigned to the more experienced Dwarven Engineers due to its complexity.

The group steps into a 20 foot wide hallway and, once everyone, including Katsmon, has entered, Shahadur steps in and closes the door completely shutting out the exterior light as there are no windows within the hallway and so finely are the doors set not even a crack of light can be seen about them. The evenly spaced wall sconces that provide ample light to the hallway and whose fires, which are noticed by all, give off no smoke thus indicating that some sort of magic was at work here.
Jan 8, 2020 8:29 am
"Well you all have the esteemed pleasure of being one of the select few groups of new recruits to have been formally invited to spend time with Ole Kez. Since I seemed to have facilitated his placing an order for his favorite meal with you all, something that does not happen all that often, actually. I feel it is my duty to share with you these following things. His favorite bread is made at the Rock Inn a place you," he indicates Brindel, "may enjoy. Just ask them for the Kez Special. His favorite oysters can be gotten from Zinwynn, who can also be found relaxing at the Rock Inn during the evening. His favorite vinegar is the spicy Chardonnay made at the Book Inn a place you two." He indicates both Lex and Egret, "from what it sounds like may find of interest. The place is bit pricey from what I hear but I think you will understand the why of it once you check it out. As for his favorite peppers those come from, of all places, Mams Inn a place that you," he indicates Brindel again, "will most likely not care to go to, and they are called Mams’ Pickled Ears. Now you can get what you like, but those will put the ole man in a very agreeable state even if he had a bad day. Now follow me."
Jan 8, 2020 8:29 am
Shahadur walks down the hallway and just past a pair of doors about 30 feet on either side are a set of 10 foot wide stairs on either side and at the end of the hallway are another set of large doors. The stairs on the right go down and the stairs on left go up which are the ones that Shahadur takes leading the group up to the second floor. Upon reaching the second floor he turns to his left down a 10 feet wide hallway that actually goes in both directions with Arrow Loops spaced evenly along the outer wall. Shahadur goes only about 10 feet down before opening a normal sized door and ushers everyone inside.

Inside the 20 by 20 room are a pair of desks between which a large map of Far Reach hangs on the wall. Off to the left is a large table covered in stacks of parchment and scrolls. To the right is a large book shelf containing books and scrolls. Sitting at the left-hand desk upon entry is a Dwarf, must be Kustaa, and standing beside him is an Elf. They both watch as the group files in. Again once everyone as entered, including Katsmon, Shahadur enters and closes the door.
Jan 8, 2020 8:32 am
The Dwarf appears a bit worn and sounds a bit weary as he asks, "New recruits?"
Jan 8, 2020 8:32 am
Shahadur replies, "Yes fresh off the caravan, I brought them here because your kinsmen has an heirloom he was honor bound not to part with."
Jan 8, 2020 8:32 am
Kustaa nods and motions for Brindel to approach the desk. When Brindel gets close to the desk he says, "Let me see," as he taps the top of his desk.
Jan 8, 2020 1:49 pm
Feliani took in all that Shahadur was describing about Kezzel. On her part she had promised to bring something, so she made a note to do so if she had the chance. Jarret, her hawk, had picked up these thoughts of her and, because it didn't enter the fort with her, made himself useful by flying off to hunt oysters!

In the room with Kustaa the dwarf, Feliani kept silent first as it was obvious that Brindel had something for Kustaa.
Jan 8, 2020 9:01 pm
After entering the room, Egret subtly - or he hopes that he does it subtly, - shifts behind others, trying not to catch much attention. Of course, there's no danger to be hiding from, but the druid reasons that he wouldn't want to alter Kustaa's first impression of the group. For a battle-worn veteran, seeing his lightheaded approach to fashion won't be a good assurance of their abilities, and while the guards seemed amicable enough, he still isn't sure if this dwarf would welcome a tiefling. Yeah, that's certainly the reason why he's hiding, not because he feels a touch claustrophobic.

To get his mind away from the places it was slowly wandering into - and give Brindel time to speak with Kustaa, - the tiefling walks up to the bookshelves, squinting at the spines and seeing if there was anything interesting to him. A book of local plants, maybe, or a scrolls of curious spells. He glances back to Shahadur warily for a second, not sure if he was allowed to check closer.

Brindel approaches and, in a typical dwarven greeting of respect, bows slightly to Kustaa. "Thank you for the audience, Kustaa," he says, then carefully unstraps his battleaxe and lays it on the desk. "My name is Brindel Truehand of Citadel Adbar. As a paladin of Gorm Gulthun, I am requesting special dispensation from the village's policy of no weapons within its walls. This battleaxe is crucial for me to follow Gorm's teachings and protect my companions to the best of my abilities. Just as importantly, the axe is an inheritance from my great-grandfather, Thearden the Shining, another paladin devoted to Gorm."

OOC:
You might find this hard to believe but the spine of a book is considered its backside, as such books are put on the shelf with the spine facing the wall, and the pages facing the room. Spine embossing did not take place until the 16th century
Katsmon steps over to Egret and softly asks, "Is there anything I can help you find?" The question is straight and helpful in tone.
Jan 9, 2020 5:45 pm
Kustaa rests the side of his bearded chin on his left hand as Brindel approaches and introduces himself. He seems perhaps bored but his eyes are alert and piercing. He nods slightly to the mention of the city and Brindel's patron. When the axe is laid on the desk his eyes narrow some and he reaches out his right hand and begin tracing the symbols upon it which in turn all of them each glow a soft red. "Hmm..." he looks back up to Brindel as he pulls his hand back, "so you have not unlocked its potential yet I see. Can I ask why?"
OOC:
And before you ask - no Brindel is not aware of any potential locked away within the axe - any more than his player does ;-)
Jan 9, 2020 10:49 pm
OOC:
It's a fantasy world though, not a historical one - you can never know how it is until it's described. Most fantasy illustrations I see portray bookshelves like we do it today. :D (Also, is it hard to believe?.. I always thought about spines as backsides. XD)
Egret looks over at the human, giving him a friendly smile and answering quietly, to not disturb the conversation happening behind them. "No need, friend, but I appreciate the offer. I was just giving my companions a moment to go over bureaucratic details - master Truehand is way better at it, and I mostly rely on him to make sure we aren't thrown away from this here fort." His eyes shift back to the books, and then again to the knight. "I wondered if there were any books on botany or other natural studies. I'm a druid, you see," his smile gets wider, indicating amusement.
Jan 10, 2020 12:39 am
OOC:
No problem just letting you know ;-)
At Egret's question Katsmon stops and thinks for a bit then replies, "No I do not think so, those kind of books would be something your new friend Kezzel would have. Most of these are," he glances at the books on the shelves, "historical records, military strategies and tactics, and theological dissertations. Still if you want something to read while your friend sorts things out maybe..." he reaches up and pulls down a fairly thick tome, "you might find this of interest." He hands the book which has green leaf leather cover to Egret.
Jan 10, 2020 2:03 am
Brindel replies to Kustaa, "Unfortunately, any secrets of this battleaxe died with my great-grandfather. I only recently acquired it when I renewed my oaths in my furtherance ceremony. If the high priest knew of any powers it had, she did not pass that knowledge on to me nor to any in my family."
Jan 10, 2020 3:15 am
"Hmm..." Kustaa looks at the axe in thought while unconsciously drumming his fingers on his desk then after a bit says, "Well it would not have been the high priestess' duty to inform you about a family heirloom but then could there have perhaps been reason that your great-grandfather may not have wanted the axe used again."
Jan 10, 2020 3:42 am
"If you know something I should know, please tell me. After all, the more I know, the better I can help defend the village while we are here."
Jan 10, 2020 3:54 am
"I think I just did, did I not?" Kustaa raises his eyebrows a bit with his rhetorical question having just revealed that the axe had hidden powers, "I am just trying to figure out perhaps why your great-grandfather had not left any information concerning it. It could merely be that he wished to test the worthiness of the one that picked it up, or perhaps he was concerned about having its powers activated. If its the former I would be doing him an injustice by extending aid, if it were the latter perhaps there is a reason those powers ought not be activated or at least caution should be taken in doing so. The more I know the better I can understand if and-or how I might help."
Jan 10, 2020 4:25 am
How curious! Lex pipes in, standing right hehind the two of them. I've heard of fabled dwarven workmanship but I've never heard of hidden potential before. I'd love to help you unlock its secrets if I can. I could never resist a puzzle! (He speaks Dwarvish) He reaches a hand out to touch it and then pulls it back, realising he might be doing something culturally insensitive.
Jan 10, 2020 5:03 am
OOC:
FYI, I thought we were speaking Common, but I'm good with Krustaa and Brindel accidentally slipping into their native tongue. :-)
Brindel turns to his side. "Lex, I would be honored to have your help. The ways of arcane magic are not mine."

He then turns back to Krustaa. "This has been unexpectedly enlightening meeting. I appreciate the information you have given me. For now, I must trust in Gorm to reveal its mysteries at the proper time." He pauses while he picks up the axe. "My request for dispensation is still an open issue. May I ask for a decision, or shall I come back at a more appropriate time?"
Jan 10, 2020 5:15 am
OOC:
No Kustaa (not Krustaa) has been speaking in Humanish as it tends to be the most common language spoken. Again as I stated earlier some where only if you are not speaking in Humanish (aka Common) do you need to denote what language you are speaking in. Oh and I hope you are not missing a clue that was casually laid upon the table -- I state that because I believe Brindel knows a bit more about the his great-grandfather than he has revealed thus far but that is totally up to you to hold or divulge ;-) I just understand also that the players need to get a bit more used to my style of Storytelling as well so I will be lenient in the beginning
Kustaa replies to Brindel's final question by saying, "Once you have all taken the official oath there will be no need for any special dispensations. Further I think you misunderstood as you were never restricted from carrying a weapon in the village, you just cannot enter the Garrison with weapons without having taken the oath first. We have too many strangers from too many kingdoms coming here to allow just anyone to enter the Garrison. So if you have nothing more to say about your axe or your great-grandfather then we can begin with the oath taking or you can forego the oath but you will not be allowed in the Garrison and you will be asked to leave the village within a months time."
Jan 10, 2020 6:28 am
"Thank you for the clarification. The issue was distracting me far more than it should have." Brindel looks down at the battleaxe in his calloused hands, examining the symbols that no longer glow red.
OOC:
I have some questions, so I'm moving the axe/great-grandfather conversation to the rpgventurer character thread so I don't monopolize the interactions in this room.

"Oath? Not meaning to be rude, but what's that for?" Feliani didn't ask the question in a confrontational voice, but with a curious tone. "Is it not enough that we are here and offer our services to aid in your endeavours? I'm not entirely convinced that I should be swearing to some god I don't worship, and if this means I'll have to stay in the village then so be it." Feliani was normally more accommodating in most matters, and sympathised with the need to keep the Garrison weapon free, but trivial oaths were not to be taken lightly.
OOC:
Alright, so let's see if I understand Claiming a Setback. Since Feliani's personality trait says "I can find common ground between the fiercest enemies, empathising with them and always working toward peace" and in this case she's not able to find common ground and doesn't want to compromise. Does this count?
Jan 10, 2020 3:20 pm
OOC:
Actually it would work in the other direction here -- "I can find common ground between the fiercest enemies, empathizing with them and always working towards peace. This means if a situation arose where working toward a common goal or peace between parties would create a difficult situation then it would come into play -- what you are doing is actually going against Feliani's nature not in accordance with it -- if her nature was distrustful -- that would have played into what she just said not the other way around -- but good try -- still you can always ask in chat about this if you are unsure prior to posting ;) -- with that said let me know in chat if you plan to keep the above
Jan 11, 2020 1:52 am
Brindel looks back up at Kustaa. "I assumed these symbols were just decorative."

"My great-grandfather belonged to an army that defeated an evil priest who was building golems to attack a neighboring city. However, the priest, with his dying breath, cursed my great-grandfather, his sons, and his sons' sons with great misfortune if they ventured out of the mountains. My grandfather tried to buck the curse twice and almost died both times."

"Many have tried to remove the curse to no avail. I am the first paladin of Gorm in my family since my great-grandfather and I have the privilege of fighting for others, unrestricted to my beautiful mountain home."

I would also like to know a little more about this oath. I imagine, I won't have any problem with it. But I do like to know the particulars of an oath before I am asked to swear it.
Jan 11, 2020 2:42 pm
Kustaa was about to answer Feliani when Brindel spoke up followed by Lex. He holds up a finger and says, "Okay I will get to the Oath in a moment," then he looks at Brindel, "okay then its worth looking into, for your edification those are Celestial runes which normally only come in sevens, the fact that there are eight and that your great-grandfather had been cursed most likely means one of those is not what it appears to be and most likely your great-grandfather or one of those that tried to remove his curse became aware of this. Which is to say most likely some how that curse got tied into that weapon. So I would venture to guess this might have been why your great-grandfather left nothing speaking to it. While I can read those runes, the mere speaking of their names could trigger one which might be the wrong one so you had best talk to ole Kezzel as he should be able to help you better understand what you need to do and perhaps more importantly what order to do it in." Kustaa gives Brindel a moment to absorb what was said and then glances at the other three, "Okay the Oath..."

A knock on the door interrupts Kustaa and he pauses while Katsmon opens the door to eventually let in both Kendra and Kroog.
Jan 11, 2020 6:42 pm
The magic dampening bracelet has soured Kendra's otherwise cheery disposition. The bard looks at Brindel. Do we have our assignment? I can't wait to get this off. I can understand that they are careful, even respect it, but I am cut off from inspiration, life, joy... Kendra trails off as she spots Kustaa
Fortive us this intrusion we got separated earlier
[ +- ] Att: Brindel
Jan 11, 2020 7:49 pm
Kroog feels naked as ever without his weapons. He looks at his companions, "Sorry we're late...we overslept." Kroog tries to asses the situation's threat level.
Jan 11, 2020 7:57 pm
Kroog eyes the group currently within the room, they almost out number their opponents 2 to 1 but Kroog also gets a feeling by the rather relaxed nature of their potential opponents that even out numbered they might not be beatable by their group.

Kustaa acknowledges Kendra's apology with a semi-wave of his hand.
Jan 11, 2020 9:16 pm
Egret, having accepted the book offered by Katsmon and perusing through it with interest, is only half-listening to the conversation about the axe, figuring that if Brindel thought his companions needed to know anything, he'll repeat the story later. The druid does react to the door opening, however, looking up to see Kendra and Kroog entering the room. The tiefling smiles and nods, acknowledging the duo, then promptly goes back to reading.

The book Egret finds himself reading is a Druidic dissertation on The Wilderness within Civilization written in Druidic no less.
Jan 12, 2020 6:15 am
Brindel turns toward the door. "Welcome, Kendra. Welcome, Kroog. I'm sorry you had to go looking for us. We didn't mean to leave you behind like that but our entrance into the village took some unexpected turns. We'll catch you up when we get a chance."
Jan 12, 2020 10:18 am
Feliani also noted Kendra's and Kroog's arrival, but didn't turn her attention away from Kustaa as it was important to her to hear his explanation about the oath when he was ready to get to it.
Jan 12, 2020 10:08 pm
"Well this is fortuitous as I will only need to explain this once to this group," he looks at Feliani, "No the Oath is not to any particular deity, nor is offering your services a measure of assurance since those services were not even optional if you wished to stay in the village for a prolonged period of time." He then directs the rest of his speech to the group in general, "Now to help explain. We get a lot of individuals coming and offering their services but some of those are here on behalf of others that have eyes on making this place their own. So in order to create a measure of safety for all we established the Oath so that everyone felt more at ease with one another. We currently even have hereditary enemies living side by side with each other peacefully within this village and without this assurance we would be sitting on a proverbial fireball of chaos that would be ready to explode at the slightest provocation. The Oath itself is very simple, and disappears on its own, after a week after one has left the village without any intent of returning. Now with that explained this is what the oath states," Kustaa takes a breath and then recites from memory, "I hereby enter into this oath willingly and without outside influence in doing so. I promise for as long as I carry the mark of the Garrison of Bridgefort I will do my best to protect Bridgefort, Southbridge Village and its law-abiding citizens, from harm of any sort. So be it thus forth." He then sits up a bit and holds up his left fist with back of it facing the group, "Whereupon you become a law-abiding citizen," a bluish sigil appears on the back of his hand, "this assures everyone that you hold the best interest of the village and its people to heart and nothing more. Something I would hope you would do anyway if you were truly here to help. But be forewarned if you here with ulterior motives having been sent by an outside entity the Oath will not take as you must be entering into it without any outside influence. Also we here," he waves his right indicating the other paladins present, "are not forcing you to take this Oath. We are simply saying, for the reasons I stated, if you plan to stay and help then this is part of helping, if you do not wish to stay and help that is fine by us as well. However, if you wish to stay and adventurer this is a requirement of that as well, since ever anyone staying for more than a month is considered a citizen with all of its responsibilities and benefits. So will all of you be taking the Oath or leaving within a months time or sooner from now."
Jan 13, 2020 12:21 am
I am happy to swear the oath Lex churps happily. Perhaps too happily...
Jan 13, 2020 7:37 am
So this is a magical oath, that manifests in a blue sigil... The wording have some, intentional, wiggle room. Kendra is stating facts but "intentional" is ask as a question. For the sake of transparency, what are the consequences of breaking the oath?

Honored dwarf Kustaa, I mean no disrespect, but as a Bard, I work the power of words. Aside from this oath, are there any other local laws, that "law-abiding citizens" must follow?

She eyes Lex.
Lex, you will be caught in a nasty contract someday, if you jump at oaths that easily.

Kustaa looks at Kendra, "Well the wording is not as important as a person's intent, and the magic is geared toward an individuals intent not necessarily their action. Further it is meant mostly as a preventative measure as we are not a tyranny here. As to breaking the Oath well first prior to actually breaking the Oath their is some discomfort letting one know they are nearing the edge. Actually breaking the Oath is accompanied with pain and the mark changing to that of an Oath breaker basically it starts glowing a bright red. Further the pain is meant to be sufficient enough to hopefully cause one to turn themselves in rather than flee the city and live with the pain for a week. However, it is not crippling, just very unpleasant. Other than the Oath there are the normal laws of a civilized area but those are kind of covered under the harm. Stealing from someone is harmful, slandering someone is harmful, but again it goes back to the intent of what is being done and the fact that for most citizens there are options. We currently do not have any vagrants as we can generally find employment for anyone seeking it and if you are employed and have a place to live and food chances are you will not feel a need to harm another. Finally everyone always has the option of leaving as caravans come and go from here on a somewhat regular basis so leaving is rarely an issue. Our concern is mainly the malcontents that wish to cause harm for self gain which there are plenty of in this world and again considering what this place represents many who would love to get their greedy hands on its control." The way he covers things makes it almost sound rehearsed but probably just means he has had to say many many times over which might also explain why he appears to be a bit weary.
Jan 13, 2020 9:32 am
Thank you, good sir. That is an oath I am willing to take. As long as it is time-limited as you say. I have stories about making deals with creatures outside our world, that can, and should, make anyone hesitant to go blindly into such a compact. In those the wording is key. The first one tonight, I'll dedicate to Lex

Kendra then steps back, as she has said what she needed about oathes. She does smile at Lex, reassuring him that the jibes she send at him, were friendly in nature.

Kroog thinks, this self-righteous stumpie seems sincere enough, and a few of my new companions seem to be willing to go along with this...hmmm, I hope this doesn't kick me later.

He then steps forward and follows suit with Kendra and Lex, "Well, I see no harm in this temporary oath. You can count me in for now."

"No disrespect intended," Feliani began, her independent spirit chafing uncomfortably at what she was hearing, "but this ensorcellment, purportedly harmless as it is, is still an imposition on the free will of all folk. I am cautious enough to worry that there could be situations where it could be twisted for ill. But I thank you for explaining its intent clearly, and your repeated assurances; I respect it and understand its import. Nonetheless, I'd prefer to prove my loyalty or service through both word and deed both, but I cannot subject myself to your magicks. I understand this means I'll have to stay in the village, and forego entering this garrison, so be it. If good, helpful folk aren't welcome here, then I shall not stay long. But while I am here, you can still count on my aid, whether or not you think you can trust me." Feliani hoped that she conveyed her genuine intentions to the powers-that-be. Whether or not she was going to be turned away remained to be seen. She made eye contact with Shahadur, guessing that the dragonborn had already seen this aspect of her personality.

"That said, I believe the intention of this oath and my fellow paladins is to protect the garrison, so I shall be taking the oath."

I concur this is good CG behavior and worthy of a Setback --- you have successfully gained 1 Inspiration -- you now have a total of 2

Everything I do is for the common people.
Or in other words please allow your character time to wrestle with this because taking the Oath is for the common people which she will hopefully see as things progress and it helps keep the peace which is to say not taking the Oath works against keeping the peace as again I am hoping she will see as things progress -- but no rush on this she will have 30 game days to work this all out ;) so take your time and enjoy the angst -- basically you earn this second Inspiration point only if you portray this issue working itself out within your character -- if one day she is on one side of the fence and the next day on the other that is not worth the point -- again keep in mind that purpose of Inspiration is to promote quality role playing whether it helps or hinders makes no difference the key is -- is this something your character (not you) would do

Ghosting Egret per the player's request
Egret is only half listening to the proceedings and hearing the majority of the group agree to the Oath when asked, with head still buried in the book, replies, "Yeah I'll do it."

With that the Elf walks over to his desk and pivots out a lectern that sits beside the desk then each person who has agreed to the Oath is called forward to take the Oath. The elf places a small emerald green orb covered in sigils in the users left hand and instructs them to place their hand on the bottom of lectern below the words and then recite the words. If someone is not literate the Elf will simply say repeat after me and then will recite the Oath for them to repeat.

The Elf calls Kendra forward first and upon completing the Oath she finds the bracelet she'd been wearing opens and she was released from its restriction, the sudden unexpected flood of re-connection was exhilarating to say the least. She profoundly felt the presence of her deity and the world once more took an its natural beauty even in a rather drab room.

After Kendra the Elf called Brindel, Lex, Kroog, and finally Egret. When called Egret asks Katsmon to hold his place and hands him the book before moving to the lectern. These four actually noticed a slight tingling sensation in their left hand when they took the Oath but that seemed to be the extent of it.
Jan 13, 2020 5:34 pm
"Okay with that formality out of the way are you wanting to get an assignment now or would you rather take a couple of days to get settled in?"
Jan 13, 2020 5:36 pm
Feliani feels a hand rest upon her shoulder and then Katsmon leans in and softly says, "Please come with me." He then moves to the door and opens it and indicates that she should step into the hallway.

Brindel's eyes follow Felliani. "Felliani, please wait nearby outside the garrison for us. I would like to speak to Kezzel before we go since we are here."

He turns to the rest of the group. "Lex, and whoever else is interested, is invited to join me. I don't think we'll be here long. We can meet up with anyone who doesn't want to speak to Kezzel and has other business is the city, including finding rooms for us, since to stay together we'll need to stay in the village."

Then he addresses Kustaa, "Personally, I would like to get our assignment tomorrow. A hot meal and a soft bed tonight would be most welcome."
Jan 14, 2020 5:41 am
"Of course." Feliani followed as Katsmon directed. She was glad that no greater fuss was created over this matter. Besides, there ought to be lots more going on down by the village.

Lex laughs quietly at Kendra's jibes. Thank you Kendra. I have been accused of being too trusting before. It is something I am working on. Great to know you have my bacl though.

Then he turna to Kustaa
Personally, I would prefer to begin working as soon as possible. Practical experiments do give the best learning opportunities after all and I'd love to explore the area and learn everything I can.

As the group chaotically moves to disperse, Egret takes a few last looks through the pages of the book - which he retrieved from Katsmon right after taking the oath, - and then sets it back in its place, taking a note to himself to maybe request a chance to examine it more later. It was refreshing to read Druidic after months of journeys without a sight of familiar words, for all that he usully didn't interact with those who shared his profession. Lifestyle? Whichever being a druid can be classified as.

Now that the meeting is over, Egret turns towards Brindel. "As intriguing a person as master Kezzel is, I trust I'll have more chances to speak with him later. Can't forget what we were told about his favorite dishes, too!" He chuckles. "I'll go wait with Feliani, I think. It's... stifling here." The druid fixes his collar and smiles apologetically at Kustaa. "Castles and towers are not my favorite scene."

Kustaa nods to Egret and indicates that he is free to go if he wants.

Kustaa looks over at Kendra, "Well that will kind of depend on what you collectively decide, unless you all want individual missions, or I can have you report to normal guard rotation."
Jan 17, 2020 3:39 pm
"Kustaa, without everyone here, we cannot make such a decision. During the journey, we agreed to work together if the circumstances were right. Do you have a mission for us all that we can discuss later as a group?"
OOC:
FYI I'm just stating my preference here. Please don't be shy if you want individual or smaller group missions.
Jan 17, 2020 4:25 pm
"Well considering the size and seeming versatility to your group I have one that should be something I hope your group can handle as it would greatly expedite our putting a group together. Still you all kind of need to consider deciding on a leader for your group or at least spokesperson as dealing with an entire unit is oft times a bit too much when giving out assignments. That being said we have reports of a tower that exists within the swamp and we want it checked out to see if we can establish some kind of forward base that we can use to start dealing with the undead issue that exists there. If your inclined to take on this assignment, and I can understand if you do not, I can introduce you to a local guide that I think would fit nicely into your rather eclectic group that can help you navigate this region. So if you agree to this, then please look up a guy named Shump, he can generally be found at Mams Inn. Does this sound viable and if yes do you have any questions?"
OOC:
Oh no the plan was for a full on full group mission ;) -- you will need the bodies -- that was just me roleplaying Kustaa but had you chose that - I would have simply rolled with it
Jan 17, 2020 10:48 pm
Is anything known about the origins of the tower? Also, you mentioned undead, could you tell us anything more about the dangers we might expect to face?

Finally, could we have access to any supplies fo this mission?

Okay if you plan to make persuasion rolls and things of that sort -- be sure to list with that roll what you are trying to persuade -- as I do not see anything within the general text that seems like your trying to persuade anyone of anything and since that can change but the rolls cannot best to include it with the roll
"Well, no you would be the first ones to be investigating this, so no information beyond its general location. As for the undead, well they are the non-living that walk around and pretend to be alive and come in many varieties and many of those exist within that marsh so could not say what you might encounter, however, rest assured that ever present fog or mist or whatever it is protects them from the full light of day. Still there does seem to be an inordinate amount of animated corpses and skeletons which many folks seem to mistake as being undead wandering around the marshes perimeters. Now as to supplies... well that kind of depends on what sort of supplies you are wanting to acquire. Somethings like food, water, and ammo we have plenty of other things like magical potions and such we do not have... well except for things that ole Kezzel might have whipped up recently."
Jan 17, 2020 11:11 pm
Shahadur chuckles, "Yeah but you might be better off not drinking any of those, I think the last test subject he had for one of his concoctions turned into a blotted green frog-like thing for a week or so."
Jan 18, 2020 2:19 am
At Kustaa's nod, Egret bows his goodbyes and makes his way out of the room, quietly whistling some melody he remembers from his past travels. It takes some time for the druid to navigate his way back, but with the help of the guards stationed around he finally gets to the gates, intent on finding Feliani and waiting with her for their companions. That, or going back to the tree he spent the time during the inspection with.

The tiefling briefly thinks back to the orc he saw before, musing if maybe he can see if there are any adventurers around. Maybe even someone from his homeland? There might be use in going around and chatting with people, since they are going to stay here for a while. Not that he's particularly interested in forming social ties, but some light-hearted casual conversations would be pleasant. So far the people around seemed quite accepting.

With these thoughts, he leaves the fort to look for Feliani.

Kustaa shakes his head no, "No they are just magically animated corpses and skeletons no different than animating a chair -- of course there are actually zombies and skeletons that are undead and those are lot nastier than the ones on the fringes of the marsh. Still we have yet to figure out what is animating those zombies and skeletons or more precisely whom. Maybe you will find out for us."

Fair enough. I sometimes feel the urge to add a roll to a post because I feel the DM may want one. This way just saves time. Kustaa shrugs his hands, "Sorry we have not gotten any real information yet on what resides within the swamp beyond what has come out of it and a few stray reports, like there is a tower in their that can sometimes be seen from the river just north of it."
Jan 18, 2020 8:01 am
Thank you very much. Have you any thoughts about compensation?
Jan 18, 2020 8:53 am

You also get that when you get back from a mission while you are on inactive status for a week or if you have been injured however long it takes you to recover."

Kroog speaks up to Kustaa, "What exactly do you know about what has come out of it?"

Weimin looked at Kustaa who nodded and Weimin responded to Kroog and Brindel's questions with, "Well the Yrocs had reported demons in armor but these reports are conflicting and not very precise so we have not been able to establish what kind of undead they might be, of if they were even undead at all. We have had a few vampires attempt to infiltrate the village but we are not sure where they came from. However the zombies and skeletons are being animated by someone or something which often indicates other undead are generally present as they love to use these constructs as their minions. Of course the rumors of what exists in that marsh are wide spread from the absurd to extremely unlikely still there may be some truth mixed into all the misinformation but we are hoping to get more solid reports that we can use."
Jan 20, 2020 7:36 pm
"You will find your gear in the barracks on your appointed bunk which can be gotten from the on duty Logista found in both barracks rooms on the first floor along with the mess hall. As stated we only have a vague report of the location of the Tower but it would be a two to three day trip over the fields to where the river enters the Marsh then another two or five days depending on the actual difficulty of the terrain to get to approximately where the tower is said to be."

"Yes the hazard pay is covered by continuing the stipend for one week after your return or how ever long it takes for you to fully recover. Along with free medical care. Further during this time period you will not be scheduled for any assignments and are expected to take this time to rest and recuperate. After which you may request mild assignments for a while if you like. Then of course there is the bonus that anything you find is considered to be yours to do with as you please, although if you plan to sell any of it that you give us first chance to trade for it and we will offer a reasonable value. Still rest assured we reward quality work as well as quality information."

"Shahadur, that's a suggestion I'll take to heart. Thank you." Brindel mentally goes through the list Kezzel mentioned: a loaf of fresh baked bread, some pepper and vinegar. A grand accompaniment for oysters, he thinks, then moves to thoughts of animated horrors for a second.

"Shahadur and Kustaa, I will join my companions now as we have much to discuss. Farewell and," Brindel switches from Common to Dwarven for a customary saying from his temple in Citadel Adbar, "may Gorm's shield be near." He turns and follows after Lex, assuming he'll catch up along the way as Lex will probably be distracted by something in the village.

Lex thought about it for a bit, and he recalled that historically they used holy water and other holy things to combat undead and that salt was believed to be helpful against demons. Further he believed there was a particular alchemical mixture involving salt that might be used against demons but what it was or how to make it he did not know but nothing specifically geared towards undead.

On the way to Mam's Inn, Lex reaches into his backpack and says Holy water for demons and salt for undead. Wait. No reverse that. Holy water for undead and salt for demons. Dammit. I'm out of salt. I suggest we pick up a bag or two before heading out. I've also heard of an alchemical formula for making a flask that would hurt undead but I can't remember the specifics. If you give me a month or two I could prepare something... No! I have a better idea. Let's capture a minor demon, imp or something and bring it back with us. Then I'll begin devising something.

The group heads to their right in the direction of the Rock Inn and then Mams Inn upon getting to the Rock Inn Brindel veers off the road in its direction while Lex continues down the road towards Mams Inn. It is fairly obvious to the group that not everyone was on the same page at this point.
Jan 24, 2020 5:20 am
"Friend Lex, do I have my inns mixed up?" Brindel smiles. "Odd things seem to happen when a gnome is involved."
Jan 24, 2020 8:09 am
Well, the guide?... Mams Inm?... No?Lex seems quite flabergasted
Jan 24, 2020 2:50 pm
"Lex, please, I am sorry, the fault is all mine. My thoughts have been drawn to my battleaxe and what information the gnome Kezzel might have. I obviously didn't pay enough attention during the other conversations. Let us go to the Mams Inn first."

"Kendra and Kroog, my apologies for any confusion I have caused to you as well. It is an uncomfortable feeling to have your family history rewritten in so short a time."
OOC:
@DeJoker To be clear, those are Brindel's thoughts as he deals with the new information about the battleaxe, not mine personally.
Jan 24, 2020 2:57 pm
"Ehhh, no worries Brindel. Where are we going!?"

Kroog seems a bit perplexed on which Inn we're supposed to be going to.
Jan 25, 2020 4:02 am
Not at all. The inns are close to one another. Let's go to Mam's Inn first, get the information the group needs and then find out about your axe. I must admit I am very curious about it too!
Jan 25, 2020 6:37 am
The group leaves the Rock Inn behind and continues on down the road, they eventually hook up with the main north-south road which hooks up to the south gate. Near the gate but off to the right some they spy two of those knights that had been present when the caravan arrived, the well dressed Tiefling and the fFolk sitting at a outdoors table.

After crossing the road and weaving up through a path in the tents they arrive at the front entrance to Mams Inn. The thirty-foot building is made of stout looking trunks and the door is fairly large, looking like it could easily accommodate someone eight-foot tall and proportionally wide. The door latch and handle are about head height for Brindel and upon opening the door it becomes apparent why as the place has more Yrocs than would make any sane dwarf comfortable. Along with the Yrocs, though there are Humans, Uriaks, fFolk, and Tieflings as well. The decor inside the place is one of a more primitive nature as beast heads adorn the walls of the nearly ten-foot ceilinged common room. In the center of the room is a large fire pit with a the body of an animal roasting on a spit. As the group steps in there is a lull in the conversations as the folk present take in the new comers.
Jan 25, 2020 7:12 am
Then out of the crowd to the groups left steps a seven-foot tall Yroc female who puts her fists on her broad hips and declares, "Well dither me withers we got us a stumpy. Now if that is not a sight to beat all. Welcome stumpy what can I get ya."

The face of this Yroc bears an uncanny resemblance to the one on the sign.
Jan 25, 2020 10:26 am
Lex smiles at the Yroc. Hello, we are looking for someone named Shump. Do you know where he might be found?
Jan 25, 2020 10:42 am
The female scowls down at Lex, "Ya can see I'm talkin' to stumpy hare, so stable that mouth." She then looks back to Brindel
Jan 25, 2020 3:05 pm
Kendra starts to play a simple little tune on her flute, just to test the waters. If it seems well-received then she transforms it into a more common drinking song that most should be familiar with.
Jan 25, 2020 7:17 pm
Shump who is just as massive as the female Yroc is about to answer easily back to her when he hears his name mentioned. He turns around and says I be Shump. What it is you be looking to me for?

Description: Male 7'+, massive huge strong Yroc. He wears furious looking bone breastplate with a bone helmet over simple traveler's clothing. Must be used to traveling outside of town as he sports a leather waterskin and has a symbol on stout leather cord to some god you imagine. He has a dagger in his boot that is noticeable. Just one sole pouch on his wide leather weapon girdle. His battleaxe is over his back on his stuffed leather backpack and warhammer in holder on wide leather girdle with a handaxe in holder tends to catch the eye. Over his backpack also hangs a heavy crossbow.

Jan 26, 2020 6:56 am
Brindel was taken aback the surprising array of people in the room, the heavy-handed and tactless decorations, and the manner of its proprietor. His observance of the surroundings was gratefully interrupted by Kendra's music. At least that's pleasant, he thinks.

"My apologies," Brindel says to Mamzrik. "This is my first time here. I think first I would like to find the rest of our group, then see what we would like to order."
Jan 27, 2020 1:39 am
"I knows its yer first time 'ere we don't get stumpies in 'ere all dat oft'n so..." she begins and then surprisingly reaches down and picks up an even more surprised Brindel and sets him on her hip like a child, "what will ya 'ave Mamz a buy'n, we gotta horse ah roastin on da spit just carve off a chunk." She says this as she moves over to the pit in the center of the Inn putting the meat within arms reach of Brindel leaving the rest of his group behind. "We've got some mighty stiff grug dat 'ood set ya toes afire iffin ya like. So what it be?"

While extremely unusual for Brindel he can tell that she is not mocking him, and in fact seems quite happy of course he has never experienced this kind of Yroc behavior before as well he's never met one except at the end of his axe.
Jan 27, 2020 1:45 am
DeJoker sent a note to GeneCortess
In response to Kendra's tune and the transpiring events a Yroc begins to drum out a rhythm upon his chest and begins to sing, which is quickly joined in by many others. The tune is not difficult for Kendra if she wishes to join in but she'll have to put some effort into the music if she wants to even have her flute be heard. The lyrics seem to be some kind of welcoming song aimed at returning warriors.
Jan 27, 2020 4:26 am
Brindel is not only surprised but aghast. His face has the look of someone falling to his death. Doing his best to keep his composure, Brindel says tersely, "Grog. Thank you. And I need to get down and back to my companions."
Jan 27, 2020 5:00 pm
"They got legs," she gestures a thumb over her left shoulder, "besides we need to get you that... Grug," she emphasizing the pronunciation, "so would you like a hunk of meat to chew on while we get that Grug or do you just want Grug?" Brindel does notice that if she were to put him down he would actually need to climb up and almost step into the fire pit to get some meat due to his height and arm reach. Perhaps its the reason she picked him up to begin with. Meanwhile the song continues quite resoundingly, and while it might be a Yroc song its lyrics are quite profoundly respectful considering they seem to be singing it on his behalf... maybe. This was so unusual it was very hard to interpret or digest it all.
Jan 27, 2020 5:43 pm
Brindel is not thinking about the music or Mamzrik's reasoning, just her actions. "Just Grug," he says, matching her pronunciation, "and I have legs and prefer to use them."
Jan 27, 2020 5:45 pm
Kendra feels the crowd, and switch to her lute. Then she joins the Yroc rhythm, and pick up the song as well. She might now know this Yroc song or at least a version of it.
The theme of returning warriors is a popular one, she knows a dozen others

I am not sure if it was understood and I am thinking it was not but I thought or meant it as an assigned guide aka just let the guide know he had been assigned - kind of thing. Might have to work on my presentation and make some things a bit clearer going forward -- still my bad and sorry if it created confusion
Jan 28, 2020 7:11 pm
Shump simply says, I'm your guide. When do you plan to leave? He gives a toothy smile as he listen to the music.
Jan 28, 2020 8:13 pm
Having been rested from oversleeping prior, Kroog stands. "I'm ready now. Why wait?"
Jan 28, 2020 8:51 pm
Kendra is dancing by playing a song:

...I didn't know I lost you till you're gone
Oh, Annette, you know I loved you till you were gone
So I gotta get up early in the morning
To find me another lover
So I gotta get up early in the morning
To find me another lover...

"Goodnuff," Mamz walks near the back wall and sets Brindel down on overturn half barrel and draws him a large tankard and then hands it too him, "Dare ya go, drink up enjoy, so watt brings ya to my Inn?"
Jan 29, 2020 1:36 am
Clam down everyone. Do we all have the supplies we need. Why don't we pick up some salt, holy water and then be on our way?
OOC:
I'm happy to skip roleplaying the shopping trip though lol. If anyone wants to shop, let's see if we can pick up some stuff and then head out?

Brindel looks uncomfortable but takes the tankard in his left hand. "Like I said, I am meeting my companions," he points to the table where they are at, "to discuss business. I need to join them now."

OOC:
There are no tables in this Inn -- just half and 3/4 barrels (used as stools) full barrels as make-shift tables and none the group even moved let alone sat down so they seem to still be standing near the door
Mamz picks Brindel up and sets him on the floor and offers her hand to his empty hand. "Chall we join 'em den?"
Jan 29, 2020 4:11 pm
Kendra whips her head around, still singing and playing, but aware of the general mood of the conversation. Whatever coins are passed her way for the performance is placed in the drinks & snacks pot for full group conversation. When the song is finished, she takes her bow and joins the group.

As Kendra bows but just before she moves to rejoin the others she is picked up and sat down on a barrel and presented with a Yroc face, "Ya play purty, play more... uh... pluz" the Yroc gives a smile? either that or he is wanting to eat her it was hard to really say.

Another Yroc near him says, "Yah... pluz."
Jan 29, 2020 7:08 pm
Brindel wraps both of his hands around the drink. "That would be best. Just so you know, it is a private matter. Thank you for the Grug." Brindel nods toward Mamzrik and starts to walk to the group.
OOC:
Does the Grug look and smell like grog?
Jan 29, 2020 7:37 pm
Shump mutters Holy Water Appears the thought didn't settle too well with him.

He says decisively, Good we leave soon, but morning better.
Jan 29, 2020 8:02 pm
OOC:
Grog is just watered down rum and this is actually a dark ale and rum mix with spices -- so no it does not smell like watered down rum -- but it does probably smell good
Jan 29, 2020 8:08 pm
Kendra looks at the group and then at the Yroc.
One more song, this is my special song, one that Hanali (elven goddess of art) has taught me. Kendra continues to introduce the importance of this very song, while she plucks her lute. By the time she is ready to play, she has most of the inn's attention.

Well I've talked to the wind and I've listened to rain
I have climbed to the clouds and I've cried out with pain
This life is for living so come to my side
And open your heart Ą to the call of the wild....

Youtube to the song.

She sings and dances through the inn, and while no one can place a spell, there is a bit of magic in the air.

When she is done, she addresses the Yroc's again. "Now, somebody's son's. I need a drink, a snack and a chat with these gentlemen, before I sing again."

Rolls

Performance - (1d20+6)

(14) + 6 = 20

Jan 29, 2020 8:57 pm
Kendra's song is awarded with a good resounding bit of Yroc chest pounding and whoops which all but drowns out the normal clapping provided by those not into using the Yroc expressions.

At the statement that she needs a drink her admirer hands her his tankard and at the request for a snack he quickly cuts off a bit of meat right off the spit and hands that to her. The steaming meat does not seem to bother him but Kendra can easily guess that it would probably be to hot for her to handle directly, however it does smell nice.

As the group sit down, Lex notices Brindel's axe as if for the first time. Ah! Feiend Brindel. Your axe! We need to go and find out more about it. Who were we to see? Kessel? Kendril? Kendra? No wait! She's here. Oh! he notices her precarious situation. Do you think she's ok?
Jan 30, 2020 6:17 pm
Brindel approaches, still clutching his full mug of Grug. He says to Lex, "This crowd is exuberant, but I don't think Kendra is in any danger. We'll keep an eye on her. I am glad you found an empty table."

Brindel turns to Shump. "Greetings. My name is Brindel Truehand. I apologize for being late. I was held up," he says, not realizing how literal his last sentence was.

He turns back to Lex, "So, what did I miss? And where are the others?"
Jan 31, 2020 7:07 pm
Big Shump says as he shumps on a barrel chair. Waiting him here to decide to leave now or wait for morning give more light.

Brindel speaks to Shump while keeping an eye on Kendra. "Morning would be better so we can get some rest in a bed that's not the cold earth. And I prefer daylight myself when traveling in unfamiliar territory."

"Say, are you our guide?"

Shump looks over to Brindel. I'm Shump and your guide to the tower. He is simple about say it. Odd races about don't seem to affect Shump at all. He does however seems to like the music.
Feb 1, 2020 8:43 am
Brindel notices Shump's enjoyment and says, "That is Kendra. She is a wonderful performer, isn't she? She didn't get too many chances to play on our journey here so it is nice for her to let loose. I have not seen her play in front of a crowd this size before."

He then turns to Lex, "Friend Lex, the axe is important and I appreciate your interest, but we can wait until this first mission is done to investigate further."
Feb 1, 2020 12:30 pm
Alright then. If you insist. The axe is yours and I will give way to our judgement Lex, looks a little disappointed at missing out on doing a puzzle. Well, if that is all gentlemen, shall we retire? Adventure awaits the first rays of dawn!
Feb 1, 2020 4:37 pm
I be ready in the morning. You can inform Kendra I like her singing. Shump abandons his barrel and moves off. Appears he has other things to do and will reappear in the morning here.
Feb 2, 2020 1:41 am
Brindel nods good-bye to Shump and turns to Lex. "Lex, I promise I"ll need your help with the mysteries of the axe in the future. Right now, I'm worried about what happened to the others. Do you know where they are? We have to make sure everything is ready for tomorrow."
Feb 2, 2020 8:47 am
OOC:
I am ready for the next day
Feb 3, 2020 8:27 pm
OOC:
Okay Shump wandered off within Mamz Inn -- and Kendra who had an admirer is ready for the next day but that leaves 3 others what are you all doing??
Feb 3, 2020 9:28 pm
OOC:
Brindel wants to meet up with the others to make sure everyone knows the plan for tomorrow is going out on the mission, starting in front of Mamz Inn. (He doesn't want to go inside again.)
Feb 3, 2020 9:48 pm
OOC:
Okay so where is Brindel taking everyone else -- as I am assuming they will follow unless they object in game
Feb 3, 2020 10:56 pm
OOC:
If no one else objects or has a better plan, Brindel and the others would check each inn, tavern, and brewhaw until everyone was together and everyone in the party was OK with leaving on the mission tomorrow morning.

If others in the party want to see Kezzel first, since they are gathering a food list, that is fine with Brindel.
Feb 4, 2020 7:33 am
OOC:
Lex will follow Brindel.
Feb 4, 2020 5:09 pm
Shump will move off to deliver his gift his sister and arrive back to do guide work later the next morning.
Feb 5, 2020 3:41 am
OOC:
Kroog is good sitting back at the inn waiting for everyone to decide on what move is next.
Feb 5, 2020 4:42 am
OOC:
Oh okay well that leaves Kendra -- who by the way just earned 17 Claws, 3 Dirks -- is she staying at Mamz Inn with Kroog or heading out with Brindel and Lex?
Feb 5, 2020 4:34 pm
OOC:
Still not sure what Kendra is doing so until otherwise stated by the player I will assume she stayed behind with Kroog but will leave room for her to be included should the player choose otherwise
As Brindel and the others step outside Kroog remains behind to enjoy the atmosphere. Once outside Brindel heads back towards the Rock Inn planning to work the Inns in rotation looking for the other two.
Feb 5, 2020 8:21 pm
OOC:
sorry - had a crazy deadline at work these last few days.
Kendra catches up with Brindel and Lex on the street. She gets a quick recap from their discussion, while she was entertaining. By this time Brindel should know that she is a harper agent, and she treats her mission with importance.
Feb 5, 2020 9:59 pm
OOC:
Okay so it was Kendra that divulged to Brindel she is a Harper Agent -- be careful about doing that too much ;) the Harpers have enemies and they do not play nicely
