It was rare that Helios-Zen had time off from his day job. His recent employment, animal consultant at Hong Kong's Ocean Park, kept them busy the last couple of weeks due to a new exhibit. The bioengineers at Wu Xing had developed a new strain of photochromatic fish, regular freshwater fish spliced with nanotech such that their bodies could illuminate in a whole spectrum of colours, and thus could be programmed to produce underwater light shows and performances.

Today though, he was out at Lantau Island, pursuing his other interest, botany. Normally, his on-and-off shadowrunning would've kept him busy at night, and in bed and asleep during daylight hours on his off days. But the last week or so was too busy for him to even take on a side job. Today he sought the comfort of hiking through the island's greenery for herbs which he could use as reagent bases.

His reverie was broken though by the beep on his commlink. It was his colleague, Jase Loi, from the aquapark. Helios-Zen wondered what it could be, after all, Jase was not the type to ever contact anyone.
Jan 9, 2020 12:29 am
Helios concluded his thought with a simple, 'Hmm.' Which was just about the extend of his concern as he toggled to receive the call. "Hello Jase something up?" I mean one should not be concerned about something one knew nothing about best to just collect the information and move forward.
Jan 9, 2020 1:16 pm
"Hey Helios, a friend of mine at the forensics lab has an interesting case to examine. He asked if I knew anyone who was an expert on bugs and you came to mind. I figure you'd be interested, you've been going on and on about it for as long as I've known you. Wanna look him up? He's at the Ares' Research facility, not the one at the Knight Errant HQ downtown, the other one in Kowloon." Helios' commlink immediately received the contact card for one Hong Sai Yuk. Ares' Knight Errant currently managed the Hong Kong Police, having taken over from MCT's Petrovski Security.
Jan 9, 2020 4:07 pm
Helios listened okay casual question posed, forensics lab, probably no rush. He then gauged the remaining of what he planned to do here with the time it would take to get to Kowloon then he posed the next logical question, "Okay thanks Jase, can I assume then that he will be expecting me to contact him?" It was probably a safe assumption but Helios tended not to assume as that generally led to issues.
Jan 11, 2020 7:29 am
"I mentioned your name when telling him I might know someone. So yeah he's expecting you to call or drop by. I would've thought they had enough experts on their payroll, but maybe they didn't know any bug hunter specialists. I didn't tell them anything else about you though, just said I might know someone is all." Jase was a marine biologist at Ocean Park; Helios had been pulling some late shifts with him on the new exhibit, listening to him babble on enthusiastically about the potential of the new nanotech fish.
Jan 11, 2020 1:42 pm
Helios listened the thought of the nano-fish passed through his mind along with the revulsion of what folks were doing to animals and themselves. He knew it was simply a sign of the times, much like dying your hair strange colors, or getting meaningless decorative tattoos but really mixing machines with biology just wholly unnatural and went against the way things were meant to be. Still it was what it was and he did his best to comfort those animals that had to go through that horrid experience. "Okay thanks Jase," he about to ask about the fish but Jase would not really be able to answer the question he wanted to know so dropped it, "I will catch up with you later, take care."

Once he had finished the call with Jase, he had his Commlink put a call through to this Hong Sai Yuk to see what was what and more importantly when. Doing favors for folks as long as it did not affect his bottom line was always good business. Of course, if he could get paid doing it that was even better. The question was going to be was this a favor or a paying gig or both.

"Yes, Jase Loi said to expect you. I'm looking for an expert pair of eyes to examine a case we are currently investigating. Legal confidentiality concerns mean I can't say too much over commlink or send you a simrecording of what we have. Would you have some time to come down and have a look? Or if you have an office somewhere we can arrange to meet there." Anticipating Helios' possible question, "If your expertise witness is deemed necessary, your services will be on retainer, of course."
Jan 11, 2020 4:02 pm
Helios thought about that expert witness thing, such a shame he would not be able to capitalize on that aspect but he could at least give things a look see and if necessary inform them then that he was not available to be a witness. Besides what could they possibly need to know about bugs that they needed an living expert for. "Sure however I am currently not in the area how long are you going to be there and-or would tomorrow be a better time. Either this evening or some time tomorrow is fine by me."

"A couple of us are pulling all-nighters, come today if you can." The tone of his voice hinted at a sense of relief, as if he was glad to have found someone to help.

While Helios was indeed out on Lantau island, the journey via hover ferry to Kowloon would take no longer than half an hour.
Jan 12, 2020 2:15 am
"Alright I will be there later this evening, see you then." With that Helios went back to checking to see if he could gather reagent related herbs. Once that was done it was on the Kowloon.
OOC:
Should I make a roll for the herbs since I am here and all? ;-)

OOC:
Yep, go ahead and make all three rolls when you summon, it streamlines all of it in one post. Getting Edge doesn't apply to these tests and rolls though, only to situations where there are Opposed tests, ie. Attack Rating vs Defence Rating, Hacking, Social tests, etc. So no Edge here. I'll let you describe the success of your summons.
Wanna roll for reagents? Sure! :) There's no rule for it just yet, so give me an Enchanting + Logic roll, representing having the knowledge to find appropriate herbs to craft magical things.
For the most part of the day Helios satisfied himself with scouring the island foliage for useful herbs. As evening began to fall, Helios looked to see where his spirit familiars had disappeared off to. He often left them to their own devices when he didn't require their companionship or service.

Getting Edge only applies to Opposed tests and -- Summon vs Resist -- that is not an opposed test?? While the guidelines do not specifically state its an Opposed check Conjuring + Magic vs (Force x 2) with at least one net hit being needed to successfully summon the spirit` sure sounds like an opposed roll to me???

Yes I understand it to be an Opposed test as well. However, only certain opposed tests qualify for generating Edge, specifically combat, hacking and social tests. The rules intend to prevent abuse: players rolling Perception against each random person on the street to replenish Edge, or spellcasting low level opposed check spells over and over, or hacking some weak Matrix host multiple times.
So it seems to me that the intended way Edge ought to be generated is when situations or scenes contain conflict, ie. two parties are 'opposing' each other in a tussle, some risk/reward is involved, or some role-playing is required. Edge is generated when a party has a clear advantage over the other when both are working against each other.

The critical glitch on the reagent search is hilarious! Let me describe the result, and we can move on.
An entire day wasted, Helios fumed. There was absolutely nothing he could find that was useful. In fact, of the dubious herbs he had collected, he was now beginning to wonder if they would have an adverse effect on his magical preparations should he choose to use them.

OOC:
Okay well perhaps for certain things one can get Edge that lasts no longer than that specific instance -- which is what I was thinking -- aka the Edge I acquired could only be used for that single summoning situation -- they have that for some Edge you get it but it goes away if you do not use it -- that kind of deals with the issue of abuse by limiting what you can do with it but yet allows you to still use it if needed in that one instance -- worth maybe considering
Helios thought for sure he would have found something viable here but perhaps others had come before him and picked the useful herbs already. What he had was not really worth the trip or his time, still maybe he could trade it at an herb dealer for some cheap tobacco at least get something good out of a wasted day but that would be later for now he had an appointment to keep. However, first he needed to recall his pet, it was not really getting any easier to bring Arianr through the gauntlet that separated the spirit world from the real world and there was always a bit of risk involved with it but he truly disliked going any where without her. So he sat down quieted himself and reached out for her and helped her come to him once more. Once she was with him again they headed out to Kowloon.

OOC:
Yes I'm reviewing that for sure. The rules offer Edge that must be used immediately for certain situations, and other Edge that can be accumulated.
Specific to your summoning, if there are no plot situations that 'used up' the services of your spirit(s), we can handwave the summoning. For example, it is assumed that you've had your spirit the entire day, but you haven't really used it. Then I don't need you to do the re-summoning for this evening then. It's really for calculating net hits, ie. a way of figuring out how much work your 'ally spirit' has done before she needs to be refreshed, so to speak. Even familiars get tired after hard work :P .
Arianr appeared as summoned. She was a sensible and helpful ally to Helios, coming and going as she was needed. The vagaries of the spirit world meant that sometimes the connection between the two of them might be interrupted, but that was rare; the bond between master and spirit servant was a firm one. This time she behaved no differently, staying reasonably concealed as Helios made his journey to Kowloon, to the forensics department of the Hong Kong police's Ares Research facility.

OOC:
Okay if I understood you correctly, I can either use the remaining hits from my previous summons, or I can choose to resummon Arianr again to replenish or increase those hits. If correct that sounds good, reduces the need for excessive rolls especially since he has Arianr with him nearly all of the time - as he sees it not as a "spirit" per-sae but his pet transcendent and he does not treat it as a servant but as a friend and companion. Also in case of glitches I would prefer to have the wrong spirit appear for whatever story reason and the Force does not have to be the same as Arianr's Force -- I just would, for story purposes, prefer not to have his friend and companion become something other than that due to a glitch.

Also with his Low Life Style where in Hong Kong would you place his current residence -- note I chose Low Life Style to reflect that he tends to live a rather inconspicuous spartan life, and often just lives somewhere he works
The lower inside of Helios' snap-up calf-length light gray hooded coat was textured to allow Arianr and other spiders something easy to hold onto but there was also a special long horizontal pocket that Arianr and other spiders could climb into and out of fairly easily for safer and easier travel.

He made his way to Tung Chung and picked up a transport that would take him to Kowloon's Ares Research facility and then just sat back and relaxed. It would not be an overly long trip but rest was still good since he was not sure how late of night it would be.

The way we've defined Arianr for 6e means you can actually use her Materialisation power to have her appear and disappear when you need her. You might not need the pockets for her (although you might still want them for the swarm). Just reminding you of your options, because...
Ares Research (Hong Kong) was a huge compound with two entirely separate wings, each with its own entrance. The first, a sleek towering building, highly secured, was where the science and development took place. The other was a squat and sprawling structure, a municipal building which served as the research laboratory for Knight Errant security services, aka the HK police, Knight Errant being a subsidiary of the Ares megacorp. It was there that Helios was supposed to meet with Hong. At the guardhouse, Helios was scanned for his identity as part of the standard procedure for entering a security facility

His fake SIN revealed him to be Helios Zen. That wasn't the problem. "Mr Zen, are you carrying anything else with you on your person?"
OOC:
... can you declare if Arianr is with you, and the other spiders as well? It'll matter plot-wise what happens next. Or I can retcon the last sentence in my post.

Use Simple Device Ratingx2 (Security Scanner vs Fake SIN) - (8d6)

OOC:
First the swarm is for intel gathering and right now he is not garthering intel and he would be aware of entering corporate facilities with spirits so he would leave Arianr outside but some where near by. And no need to retcon as that seems like a normal question to ask regardless
"No. Well nothing worth mentioning. Okay I mean... I got some herbs that I gathered earlier today but other than that nothing your sensors would not have already analyzed. Do you need me to leave those here?" Not having anything to hide Helios was very nonchalant about things as he was here to render a service not gather intel. Of course he was always gather intel at some level, there was not a place he went that he did not take in as much as he could about the place in case he needed it later for some reason. This place was no different. He gauged and cataloged the security measures he could sense and any other nuance that might notice. Sometimes it was the smaller details that proved to be the handiest.

Sure. I have noted that at this point you only have Arianr summoned, but no other spiders with you. And you've instructed Arianr not to accompany you.
"Not at all Mr Zen. Standard procedure. Please proceed." The guard had keyed in his arrival into his comms terminal, and given him directions to Hong's office: enter via the main entrance doors, take the elevator to the eighth floor, that was the forensics department. The straightforward instructions found Helios at the front desk of the an entrance labeled Department of Forensic Science. There stood a middle-aged Asian man with graying temples and a slight hunch, wearing a lab coat. He nodded when Helios arrived. "Hong Sai Yuk. You must be Helios. Thank you for coming. Perhaps you could lend your expertise in something very curious."
Jan 16, 2020 5:02 pm
Helios nodded to the guards statement and then proceed to enter the grounds proper. He continued to catalog everything he sensed as he walked as there was no such thing as too much information at least not as far as he was concerned.

He acknowledges that he is Helios with a short bowing nod then responds, "Yes, and I hope that I will be able to help you. Still perhaps you could explain a bit more about this curiosity prior to my examining it. I find it interesting that you would need any help, as I have heard you are quite proficient at what you do." Okay so it was a slight exaggeration but he could not imagine anyone being incompetent and working for Ares so it should at least be a safe statement and one that might make the other feel good about themselves.
