The Nightmare Switch

Jan 11, 2020 10:21 pm
The land of Seshar is a dry desert crisscrossed with artificial waterways created in days long past. The village of Redstone lies upon one of these waterways, flourishing due to its brisk trade in stone quarried nearby and its extremely capable clave of three Aeon Priests. And then, one night, everything changed. A mysterious illness struck, and a call for aid was sent.

You are on hire on as guards to watch over the river craft piloted by a man named Deymish, on his way to Redstone to deliver medicine. Deymish doesn’t know any details about the illness there, just that he’s to deliver his shipment to the clave there, and that it is extremely urgent.

Deymish is a broad-shouldered, bearded man, about 40 years of age. He has a broad nose and bright eyes. A good-natured fellow, he tells jokes and shares in any labor he asks of another. His boat is an 18-foot (5.5 m) wooden trow with a synth sail that—even fully loaded—glides along a river seemingly effortlessly. Seshar is well-known to Deymish, with its strange, winding waterways. He knows the risks, but makes his living on his boat anyway, frequently employing a few strong arms to help with would-be raiders as well as large cargoes—or in some cases both. He pays each hired hand/guard 3 shins per day, but they get paid when he gets paid for the shipment.

When they arrive in town, Deymish asks for the PCs’ help in getting the four crates of medicine up to the clave’s tower.

"Come, friends, lift those crates, journeys end means pay day is close at hand!" You can easily manage three crates with one person at each end, or if two stronger characters wanted to each solo a crate (tough work but I won't make you roll to do it), leaving Deymish and the remaining three PCs to take the other two.
Jan 12, 2020 12:05 am
Raezhon flips back her hood, her dun-colored skin almost perfectly matching the sandy ground upon which Redstone is situated. The litheness of her build evident under her loose fitting earth-tone robes, she nevertheless volunteers to shoulder one of the crates on her own, and remarkably seems to have little difficulty managing it. Those looking closely might notice that for a brief moment as she lifts the crate, her face and hands, the only parts of her body that are exposed, seem to roughen and pointilate, almost as if made of sand. The effect lasts only for a split-second, before she asks Deymish for directions as to where to deposit the cargo.
Jan 12, 2020 12:16 am
Rohim seems to think for a moment, looking at the crate, the tower and the number of people. Then he simply head for another solo crate, bend his knees to lift the crate in an optimal position and slowly start walking toward the tower, focusing on the crate's balance and his body's position along the way.
Jan 12, 2020 11:27 pm
Aduan calls to Nim, "I think the two of us can handle this one." He steps over to the third crate and waits for Nim to join him.
Jan 13, 2020 3:30 am
Surveying the area around him, Nim stands in awe of the desert landscape. Entranced by what mysteries the sand might hide. Nim takes in a deep, yawning breath of desert air before coughing gently. "Dry." His revelry is soon interrupted by a call to aid. "I think the two of us can handle this one." he looks over to the crate nearby with Aduan standing at the ready. "Of course, of course, sorry I got caught up in thought. tends to happen to me more than I'd like to admit. He braces himself and begins to lift the third crate over to it's intended destination.
Jan 13, 2020 6:36 pm
Karam approaches the last crate, with a candid smile.

- Ah, well, this one looks heavy.

She starts whistling absent-mindedly, stroking what looks like a small reed flute.

- These waterways look impressive, she says to no one in particular.

She is patiently waiting for someone to come back and help her carry the crate. This was a fun trip.
Jan 13, 2020 7:30 pm
Deymish grabs the other end of the crate Karam is by. Together, it is light work.

Together, you all move away from the docks, up the main street. to the tower. You see very few people, and those you do see aren't looking around at all, simply trudging in a tired fashion.

The tower has three stories and a conical roof. It has a few shuttered windows on the upper two levels, with thick glass, about 30 inches (76 cm) across. Unlike the other buildings in Redstone, it is round, and surrounded by an equally circular wall. The tower has a diameter of about 20 feet (6 m). The wall, a bit over 70 feet (21 m).

The wall is 10 feet (3 m) high, 1 foot (.3 m) thick, and made of redstone. A locked gate of iron bars blocks the entrance (level 3 lock, level 6 iron gate).

When you get to the bars, Deymish calls out.

The guard is a tall woman with pale brown skin and short hair. She wears brigandine armor and a helmet, and carries a long spear (she has a small sword as well). "What do you want?" she asks warily, eyeing the crates.

"A delivery for the clave. The medicine they ordered." He hefts the one end of the crate as if it weren't obvious.

"Come by tomorrow," she says and returns to her chair.

Deymish protests but she doesn't listen.
Jan 13, 2020 8:31 pm
"Apparently it wasn't that urgent?" Raezhon posits to no one in particular.

"I don't wanna be carrying these crates any farther than I have to. I assume we won't get paid until they're delivered to the clave. Let's just leave 'em set here and we can sleep on the ground next to 'em."
Jan 14, 2020 12:13 am
Rohim carefully put his crate on the ground while Deymish and the guard argue. He goes up to the gate and take a look at the tower., trying to spot a more important person or discerns some clues as to why they closed off the place.
Jan 14, 2020 12:27 am
It looks quiet inside. The guard in her chair seems half asleep but struggling to stay awake. There doesn't seem to be anyone else, or anything out of place.
Jan 14, 2020 12:30 am
"Excuse me miss, may I inquire where we can find the priests of this clave?"
Jan 14, 2020 12:47 am
"Come by tomorrow."
Jan 14, 2020 4:33 am
"Not urgent and not helpful." Raezhon grumbles, emphasizing the last two words. "So...." She lets the word trail off before continuing. "We're here. And that happened. And of course, this didn't happen. Which, I guess brings us back to 'so.'"
Jan 14, 2020 6:07 am
Rohim shrugs and turn to Deymish :"So, what's the plan boss? We can watch the crates for the night, but you're gonna owe us one more day."
Jan 14, 2020 6:21 am
"Well I definitely wouldn't say no to a few more shins. If we are staying the night though, it would be nice to have a look around this place." Nim surveys the surrounding area, absentmindedly looking for anything of interest.
Jan 14, 2020 1:58 pm
Deymish grumbles. "I suppose so. Let's take these back to the boat then you lot can look around. I'll watch the stuff today, but come by later and spell me off would you."
Jan 14, 2020 5:53 pm
When everyone has gathered back around Deymish, Karam approaches the guard once more. She tries to do that in an amiable way.

- Apologies, she says in a soft voice, has something...happened recently?
OOC:
My aim is to try and understand what motivates this guard. My hypothesis is that she’s unpleasant for a reason. GM: is there some psychology-related roll I could make to get in her head?
Jan 14, 2020 5:57 pm
"Say, Deymish was it? Where might a hired hand have to take himself to find a drink and some friendly company around here, if you catch my meaning? Nim says this as subtle as he can manage despite the fact that it is a fairly common and straightforward request. Habit has seen him talking in shadier tones whenever the occasion permits. Thinking quickly about his request he adds. "And the illness around here. Do you know anything you can tell us about it? it's method of contagion perhaps?"
Jan 14, 2020 6:35 pm
OOC:
I'm trained in assessing deception. Depending on the answer the guard gives Karam I could see if I can tell anything
Jan 14, 2020 6:36 pm
OOC:
Also If I jumped the gun on the illness thing let me know. you can disregard my prev. post.
Jan 15, 2020 12:31 am
The guard is unmotivated to provide further information. She waves you away, and mouths the words, 'tomorrow'.

If you want to try something hard, like convincing her to give you more information, roll a d20 and tell me what you're trying to do. Also reminds me if you're Trained or Specialized in that usage.
Jan 15, 2020 12:32 am
Deymish shrugs. "I am just the delivery person. Either way, I'm not going to spend a lot of time in this town not knowing what afflicts them."
Jan 15, 2020 6:19 pm
"Ok boss, I'll bring that one back then take a few hours of rest so I can take the night watch."
Jan 16, 2020 8:06 pm
OK, let’s take these back then? she nods at the crates.

Then turns to Nim.

Let’s have a drink afterwards? I have this small thing, like a saddle, I wonder if I can exchange it for a glass of something interesting.
Jan 16, 2020 9:27 pm
"Far be it from me to refuse a drink. Let's take care of these crates then and see what this place has to offer." Nim stands by the crate and waits for Aduan to join him for the return trip.
Jan 16, 2020 9:51 pm
Aduan shrugs and steps over to Nim's crate and bends to lift. "Let's get this over with," he says begrudgingly.
Jan 16, 2020 11:57 pm
"Mmmrff." Raezhon grumbles as she hefts the crate and begins the trudge back to the ship.
Jan 17, 2020 1:04 am
You're identify one of the buildings you've passed I the way from the ship is a tavern. After dripping the creates back at the body, and Deymish secures the freight and decides to take a nap, you wander back to the unnamed tavern.

Inside, you see a few people: the barkeep is slouched in a chair looking haggard (numerous empties are scattered on his counter; he clearly had chores he could attend to), and three young men are dutifully polishing off a third pitcher of some vermilion liquor as if they are engaged in a long, laborious process. Trudge-drinking, one might say.
Jan 17, 2020 1:27 am
"Looks like everyone here is suffering from the same malaise," suggests Aduan quietly. "I'm not really interested in finding anything to drink. I'm more interested in getting paid for this trip and we won't be if those crates disappear. I'm going back to help Deymish watch them. He looked like he was going to fall asleep pretty quickly." Aduan turns and walks out the door and back to the dock.

"Everybody in this place seems like they're half-dead and don't much care about the other half." She narrows her eyes as she peers around the mostly empty establishment. "Whatever they have, I don't want it. I'm going to take some air before I head back." Raezhon stands, gently toes her chair back into place, and stretches her muscles.
Jan 17, 2020 6:35 am
Rohim is already either watching the crate or sleeping to be ready for a night shift.
Jan 17, 2020 9:27 pm
Rae wanders around the town trying to get a sense of how it works and what makes it tick. She notes how its laid out, the division of activities, what social groups are clustered in which areas, how they are encouraged or discouraged from interacting. To Rae, all the world is a puzzle made of many tiny pieces, and if she can just figure out how they all go together, maybe she'll be one step closer to figuring out her own existence.
Jan 18, 2020 10:59 pm
Nim walks up to the barkeep. "Oy! I'll have a pint of whatever it is those three men are drinking over there." he motions to the three men trudging along with their drinking process. "What's going on around here. This whole town is dazed and confused."
Jan 19, 2020 12:26 am
The bartender gets up and pours half of a stout tankard of the same liquor. It smells pretty potent, closer to the whiskey side than the beer or wine side of the scale.

"These guys are trying to see if getting falling down dead drunk will keep the nightmare at bay. Not that it worked yesterday. Or anything else for anybody else. Nobody has gotten much sleep these past, I don't know, weeks? It's hard to keep things straight anymore."
Jan 19, 2020 5:43 am
OOC:
Does Raezhon notice anything unusual about the night life of the town on her exploratory foray?
Jan 19, 2020 7:29 am
Without interacting with people, all Raezhon will see is this universal exhaustion. Conversations are few and far between, even less so with a stranger around, although they're not obscenely suspicious.

If you want to two something less general, you could do so and attempt a roll. Perception, interrogation, medicine, or psychology, perhaps? Your call as to the approach.
Jan 20, 2020 2:15 am
OOC:
We'll go with perception. Looking for what makes this town tick - is there a strict hierarchy in settlement? Does it seem like power is concentrated in the hands of a single person or group, or does it seem to be a little more egalitarian? I guess I'm looking for clues as to whether the malaise is due to some external factor or is it a symptom of some kind of oppression.

Nim takes the tankard and looks at it a brief moment. "What about these nightmares then. What kind of things do you dream about. Is there anything in common with the dreams you get and that of everyone else? Nim listens closely to the answer all the while thinking In any case I'll be curious if any of us are affected tonight. In which case this drink can't really do much worse.
OOC:
Is Karam here with me?
Jan 20, 2020 9:32 pm
OOC:
You can make a roll before drinking, but for the sake of expedience, it's just hard liquor with since fruity notes.
The man says he can't explain, none of them can. Somebody described it best as being like an unrelenting storm of disconnected meaningless images and sounds with no way to understand any part of it.
Jan 21, 2020 6:46 am
"Fair enough my friend." Nim downs the liquor in a few lengthy swigs and takes a look around. The demeanour eerily creepy. If he wanted to see what the fuss about these nightmares really was, he might as well get a head start on bed time.
OOC:
If Karam is there I can stick around a bit but if not I'll just let Nim head to join the folks watching over the crates.
Jan 22, 2020 6:19 pm
If there's nothing to note after exploring for awhile, Raezhon will head back to the boat and turn in.
Jan 22, 2020 7:45 pm
Karam listened to the exchange between Nim and the barman, drinking quietly.

She then turns and walks toward a table.

May I join you?, she asks the people (men?) sitting there.
OOC:
If they agree, I’ll shoot a quick glance to Nim, inviting him to come with me. Otherwise I’ll go back to him.
Jan 22, 2020 8:01 pm
They grunt and one pushes his mug to you, leaning back. He's clearly deeply inebriated, they all are, but too tired to be obnoxious about it.
Jan 22, 2020 8:09 pm
Tough day today. Shall we drink to something? Karam asks, with a wide smile and raising her own mug.

Weird conversation opener. But she hopes the smile (and the fact that they’re drunk) might cover for the awkwardness.

Karam heard the story told in broken rambling drunkenese. A few weeks ago, a worker in the quarry fell asleep and had the nightmare. Later, his family told him they had it as well. By the next day, the whole town has had it, everyone, and anytime they sleep, it keeps them from getting any real rest. It doesn't get any easier, either. Each time is as bad as the first.
Jan 25, 2020 4:12 am
OOC:
Unfortunately for some of us, those of us whose characters are not present, we wouldn't know that and it's really hard not to metagame something like that. However there is a cheat that I've seen some players use. It's called 'walking into the room just in time to overhear something important'. It's something I don't like seeing so I won't use it myself.

Karam turns to Nim.

OK. Let’s head back to the boat and tell the others in the morning. I’m happy with what we learned, for now.

One more thing, she asks the drunken man as she’s standing up, what was the name of that worker? The one who fell asleep in the quarry?

"Him? Uhh, it was Oranith Quay." (hic)

"Good by me, a name is a very interesting development. Let's call it a night." Nim fiddles around in his pockets for a bottle of pills before finding it and examining it for a moment. Tomorrow then. He places the bottle back in his pocket and heads back to the boat to turn in for the night.

Aduan had stood guard for half an hour or so before beginning to drowse. He never did fall fully asleep. He noted the others return and listened half-heartedly to their story until they mentioned the dreams.

"What could cause such dreams? I know there are cyphers that allow a certain limited ability for mind reading. I've got something like that myself but entering and coloring someone's dreams sounds like a very powerful cypher. I've also heard of mass hallucinations but that usually happens when people are awake and are usually accompanied by some other phenomena. Has anyone ever heard of any other ways that minds can be altered from an outside source?"
Jan 25, 2020 7:22 pm
Rohim falls asleep more easily, but his eyes can be seen immediately darting around, telling observers that he is dreaming.
Jan 25, 2020 8:11 pm
Raezhon sits quietly, cross-legged, observing Rohim.
Jan 26, 2020 5:33 am
Nim fiddles in his pockets for the cypher he's been holding onto. A bottle of pills. "I might have something to help us out for the night. Won't bring us any closer to discovering the nature of these dreams but it might give us at least a nights rest.". He proceeds to pick out 5 pills and place them on a nearby surface. "For anyone willing to try." Nim then proceeds to pop one in his mouth and makes his way towards his bed. "Here goes nothing."

Rohim shows the drawing of a faceted dome the the rest of the team. "This is the clearest image I could glean from the nightmare. Does it mean anything to you?"
Jan 29, 2020 12:39 pm
Karam tries to sleep. She believes her knowledge as a scholar will help her avoid the nightmare. She is mistaken, however, and suffers the nightmare.

When Rohim shows her the drawing, she answers:

This doesn’t look like anything to me.
Jan 29, 2020 4:43 pm
Nim awakens fully rested and in a generally good mood. "Ahh! I just had the most wonderful dream! There were mountains made of pumpkin pie and lakes of this delicious liquid they called eggnog! It was all fascinating." Noticing no one else took a pill he gathers them up and places them back in his bottle. Brave souls. He thinks to himself.

Then, examining the picture drawn by Rohim he posits. "Perhaps this image is merely a smaller representation of a larger dome of influence over this town. That is to say if we were affected by this plague of nightmares as soon as we arrived perhaps this image is a representation of the dome we find ourselves within. A cloud of whatever is causing these nightmares, a zone of control so to speak.... which means... this might be intentional... That is my take on the matter anyhow." Nim looks to the group for any thoughts.

"Didn't feel like normal symbolic dream to me, more like something imposed on my mind from the outside. I am hoping this could be an actual location nearby and a clue to what is going on here, i'll ask around in town. Are we bringing back the crate right now?"
Jan 29, 2020 7:16 pm
Raezhon gets to her feet, rubs her eyes and stretches. "That makes as much sense as anything. Certainly something is affecting everyone here.... We should find out when all this began. Something must have triggered this effect, right? If we can pinpoint the 'when,' then maybe we can figure out the 'what' that will take us to the heart of the problem." She looks at the crates and then the path leading up the hill. "Maybe the helpful guard will have some answers for us today."
Jan 29, 2020 7:22 pm
Dragging your crates back up the hill, the guard, who looks even more haggard, says only the same thing to your query. "Come back tomorrow." Deymish protests, with many arm gestures and grand claims as to how important his time is, and the medicine they requested. "Medicine! Even you might benefit once the priests start handing it out!"

The guard grows angry, her embarrasment and rage competing, but her rage winning. She bellows for you all to shove off, while fingering her weapon.

You move the crates to the side, and Deymish quietly offers, "She's hiding something. Any of you good at sneaking into towers?"
Jan 29, 2020 7:26 pm
"Oh bloody hell, who's in charge in this place? We need to talk to them, not this surly peon," she mutters to the group, casting dagger eyes back at the guard.
Jan 29, 2020 8:34 pm
Rohim answers in a similar low voice : "The walls are not that high, with a boost or a few stacked crate I can get over it with a rope. Or, if you keep her of my back, I could probably just open the front door too. I'm rusty but this looks like a pretty simple lock."

Aduan pulls the group aside for a moment. "I have a couple of things that may help us. The first one is an object that will move whoever is holding it a short distance. I don't know how far it will work but it could easily put you inside the walls without having to climb over. Getting out is a different matter. But before we use that I would like to see if there is any other Numenera at work here. I can sense if one is active. What do you all think?"
Jan 30, 2020 7:03 pm
I like the idea, Karam says to Aduan, but instead of using it ourselves, let’s give it to the guard? She’ll be moved to wherever, and we’ll have a clear coast.

If that doesn’t work, I’ll do something to attract her attention and you can sneak inside.
Jan 30, 2020 7:15 pm
"Unfortunately, the holder must activate it and I doubt she would willingly do so. Any other ideas? If I can sneak in I can use a spell to see what's just inside the tower itself but I still want to see if there's any Numenera active."

"I suggest we keep this cypher to exit the compound if it need to be done in a hurry rather than entering. What do you need to check for Numenera?"
Feb 1, 2020 3:32 am
What's the plan?
Feb 1, 2020 5:34 am
While Aduan does his thing with the Numenera, Rohim walks around the compound for a discreet spot to cross over the wall.

Feb 1, 2020 4:16 pm
Rohim finds that the wall is too tall to climb without support and there isn't another way in. It is 10 feet high and a foot thick. From the far side, you could climb over it if you had crates or something to climb, and it would be far enough away that she wouldn't easily hear you.

Nim successfully distracts the guard. She's not cooperative, and the more you press the harder she resists letting you in. But she does pay attention to Nim enough that Rohim can do something.
Feb 1, 2020 6:44 pm
OOC:
Sorry for the delay.
Aduan explains that he doesn't need anything other than an ability to concentrate. He will focus on the area around the gate and the guard and examines the area closely for a full minute.

Feb 3, 2020 10:29 pm
Rohim points and head to one of the medical crate that the group carried trice already.
Feb 4, 2020 12:43 am
Aduan joins them at the crates. Using a non sibilant whisper he says, "Be careful of the plants growing over there. They are thick with Numenera as is the base of the tower. Maybe I should go too so I can scan the inside of the tower."

OOC:
Is there a way in the rules to keep someone from calling out, if we wanted to take out the guard without alerting others?
Feb 4, 2020 3:17 am
OOC:
The rules are pretty simple. You roll a d20. The difficulty will be the guards level. Adding complications, like making the take down silent would be a hindrance, making it another step more difficult (I.e., the TN on the d20 roll would be 3 higher). You'll need to do enough damage to her to reduce her to zero to knock her out.

Now, she's behind a gate, so you'll have to set this up to sell it.
Feb 4, 2020 3:57 am
"Has anybody seen other guards? If not, I say a few of us cross with the crate and a rope. We take out the guard so she doesnt call out for help. Then we all go in and we leave the gate unlocked for a quite escape if needed. That should leave out enough time to investigate safely."

Well I wish I had a more concrete idea rn lol, I don't want to ruin the distraction for y'all so I'll stay with her for now but I wanted to see if I can roll a sort of persuasion check to get her to take one of my dream pills. I just need to find a way to actually put her to sleep. I'm gonna roll to convince her to take a quick nap with one of my pills.
As Nim is arguing back and forth with the guard he casually lets slip the existence of the dream pills. "Look, all this aside I understand you're just doing your job. And you're damn good at it as insufferably cranky as you are, but you know the only reason you're so insufferably cranky is because you look like you haven't slept in centuries. I commend you for doing your duty but damn, does a hardworking guard not deserve a break." Nim deceptively looks apprehensive about saying the next thing. " Look I don't even know how you're supposed to effectively handle such an important job without at least a moment of shuteye. I can't bare to imagine how much more effective you'd be at being the stubborn wall you've been if you were rested in any way.... you know what... have one on the house. Just give it a quick try. One of these and you'll be dreaming of flying above candy mountains. 5 minute nap, nothings happening here anyhow. What's 5 minutes for a day of rested vigilance?"
OOC:
Realized after I wrote this I could have just traded a pill for her to look the other way but now I put all this effort into making Nim sound deceptively charming so I'm just gonna double down lol

Raezhon moves near to Nim and in a hushed voice say, "The guard must have a key, maybe Rohim could snag it while she's asleep?"
Feb 6, 2020 8:19 pm
After two failed attempts at dismantling this lock, Nim disheartedly sits to the side of the gate and starts to question his whole life and career path. What does 'clever' even mean when you break it down, I mean... before being Interrupted by Raezhon. "The guard must have a key, maybe Rohim could snag it while she's asleep?" Nim is awakened from his melancholic musings. "Fair point... Something is telling me I should give this one more chance though... Feb 7, 2020 4:46 am
Rohim move stealthily toward the entrance, only to find the guard asleep and Nim opening the gate.

"I haven't seen other guards, but the garden plants and the tower might be trapped. Lets make sure Aduan can check them before being to hasty." he whispers to the others.
Feb 7, 2020 10:42 am
Karam appears from behind a tree.

Oh, sorry, I was taking a leak, she says lightly, with her usual smile.

It takes her a few seconds to realize her companions could have used her help to get into the tower. She feels bad, but her broken social compass tells her that ignoring it is the best course now.

Hey Nim, do you want me to repair one of your lockpicking tools?

She doesn’t realize that it’s neither useful, nor really appropriate.
Feb 7, 2020 2:12 pm
You can enter the grounds easily now. There is a door near where the guard is, and none visible from the back.
Feb 7, 2020 9:38 pm
Aduan hears some snippets of excited words from the area of the gate and makes his way over there. "Ah, you've got it open. And the guard is asleep. Let's take a closer look at the tower." Aduan steps through the gate and makes his way carefully to the tower door. He holds up a hand to make sure that every one else stops before getting too close.
Feb 8, 2020 2:04 pm
As he gets a few feet along the path into the inner area around the tower, there is a pulse of greenish light from the tower. It fills the area inside the wall up to about ten feet high and then is gone.

Aduan feels suddenly exhausted and needs to make a level 4 Intellect Defense roll.
Feb 8, 2020 4:25 pm
Nim rejoins the group inside the tower. "Hey Nim, do you want me to repair one of your lockpicking tools?" He turns to see Karam entering. "Huh... sure.. I guess." Nim tosses a lockpick over to Karam. Then as Aduan nears the tower door there is a flash of green light and Aduan looks somehow affected. Sensing something amiss Nim uses his special ability to scan the area.

Her initial instinct is to push forward, and find the source of the light. But as Aduan went in first, she’ll follow his lead.
Feb 9, 2020 5:11 pm
Nim looks determined. "Seems like whatever caused that flash is disabled for now. Maybe a cool down. Aduan, you alright?" He says this as he moves towards the door that Aduan was attempting to open and tries his hand at carefully opening the door.

Still keeping his eyes and ears open. Rohim take out a rope from his backpack and ties it to his waist. He hand the other end to Raezhon. "I'll get them, pull me back if fall asleep also".

Unless someone interject, once the rope is secured, Rohim will step forward and drag his friends back outside the trapped area.
Feb 10, 2020 3:24 am
Nim falls asleep as well, slowly crumpling to the ground.

Rohim can reach their feet and slip a knot around so they can be pulled to safety.

They're easily woken at that time. Of course, they are startled and out of sorts after the nightmares.
Feb 10, 2020 5:05 am
"Who's actually running this place? This is crazy." She gives the guard a quick but appraising look. "Maybe she's got something on her that would negate the door trap?"
Feb 10, 2020 6:04 am
"I'll try something" Rohim make sure the rope is tied well so he could be pulled out and he takes a good look at the path between the entrance and the door. He verify that his lockpicks are easily accessible. Then he closes his eyes, put one arm over his eyes, the other before him and he moves forward toward the door blindly.
Feb 10, 2020 1:48 pm
Just like before, when you get within fifteen feet of the tower, there is a flash, and Rohim feels the urge to sleep. (Intellect Defense vs level 4 please). Being blinded does not seem to help.

The guard is asleep in her chair outside that fifteen foot trigger zone. Checking her, you find her lunch, dried veggies and meat, her brigandine armor and a helmet, and carries a long spear (she has a small sword as well). In a pocket, she has a small key (it does not fit the gate).
Feb 10, 2020 3:33 pm
In the interest of moving this forward a bit, why doesn't everyone make a Perception check to see if they can see what might be happening. This will be quite difficult, but certainly possible. If you use Scan, that will be an asset to the roll.

Feb 10, 2020 5:37 pm
I'll accept that danger sense makes sense here. With that Nim makes the difficulty 6 test, and thinks he sees where the operating lever trigger is on the side of the tower.
Feb 11, 2020 12:27 am
OOC:
I'm guessing Rohim somehow identify the lever as probably controlling the trap?
As covering your eyes seems to offer no protection, Rohim open his eyes and get his bearing back. Doing so, he notices the lever.. He start to run in that direction, hoping to deactivate the device before it triggers again.
Feb 11, 2020 12:40 am
Rohim makes it to the lever and flicks it to the other position.
Feb 12, 2020 1:36 am

Feb 13, 2020 3:35 am
Testing the trap does reveal that it seems to be deactivated, at least at the moment.

Of course, it's not quite so easy. The door to the tower is locked, although one of you has not quite broken lockpicks. The tower walls also look climbable, if you know what your are doing, and prefer to enter by way of an upper window.

Inside, the entire level of the tower is a single room. It is unfurnished, and currently holds a number of wooden crates, filled with various supplies. It is lit by glowing panels on the ceiling 15 feet (4.6 m) above. An iron staircase runs up to Level 2.

On the wall is a metal panel with glass screens and various controls.

Second Floor
This is the laboratory for the clave. In it, there are a number of different experiments in the works involving chemicals, mechanical devices and batteries, and stranger things

A notebook kept by one of the priests is open on a table here amid a number of chemicals and tools for working with chemicals detailing a number of different attempts at creating a cure for the malady plaguing the town.

Stairs continue up to a third floor.
Feb 18, 2020 3:29 am
After careful study the panel system seem to become clearer to Nim. "Seems these panels have little use, there seems to be a communication interface for the other floors and perhaps some sort of activation mechanism for the trap that blocked our entry. Might be good to activate to dissuade any potential threats from entering as long as someone stays down here to deactivate it when we need to make a getaway." Nim considers this information for a moment. "What do you think Aduan? worth the reactivation?"

Another is an injector with a level 3 serum that grants a creature the ability to resist a poison or disease as if the task were 2 levels lower for 28 hours.

The last is a bit of level 5 liquid in a tube that will put the imbiber to sleep for 1 hour.

Rohim has a hard time and gets little information from the exhausted town folk, but the faceted done is well known and eventually he gets a rough direction to head. He also understands that it's an all day journey.

THE DESERT

The desert beyond the village is extremely flat and dry. Large beetle-like insects crawl across cracked earth, scuttling for shade beneath sagebrush and the occasional large rock.

It's about eight hours march across the dry desert to reach the dome, but it is easy to find. It glitters and glistens in the sun during the day so that it can be seen for many miles. It is also exactly the same as the dome that was dreamed about and drawn later.

Near the dome, there are obvious signs of a fight -- churned dirt, bits of dried blood, a broken spear, some torn robes, and so forth. The robes are clearly the same as the Aeon Priest robes you would have seen examples of within the tower.

You also notice that a large group (some on foot, some mounted) came to this spot from the east and moved westward.

A Perception check may reveal more information.

There are strange symbols around the fight scene, crudely etched into the dry dust.

Nim also determines that the attackers were a margr band, who caught the priests outside the dome, charged in and attacked. Then, after the battle was done, continued west, but only after the superstitious abhumans put down the strange symbols as magical wards.
Feb 25, 2020 8:37 pm
As Nim studies the surrounding area his expression turns serious. "Margr... damn... and these symbols are wards, we best be careful." Nim looks for a rock to throw into the direction of the fight scene to determine anything more about the nature of these wards.

To be honest, I have no idea how you're supposed to figure this out, haha. So you do!
Contrary to all expectations, Nim and Raezhon both discover that to enter the dome, you need to place your hand on any part of the wall of the dome, and think about how much you want to pass through, at which point a door forms in front of you.
Feb 28, 2020 10:30 pm
OOC:
Haha nice well I'm sure we can find a fun way to rp it
After numerous questionable attempts at breaking through the seemingly impenetrable surface, (including kicking it, asking nicely and whispering sweet nothings) Nim defeatedly leans on the dome and screams frustratedly towards the heavens "I JUST WANNA GET INSIDE THIS STUPID THING! IS THAT SO MUCH TO.." however at that very moment the domed structure seems to react and an entrance appears. Huh.. well then... I really am more clever than I look haha... he thinks to himself foolishly triumphant.
Feb 29, 2020 6:45 am
Just as Raezhon is about to give up on the doorway idea and phase out through the walls, she sees an entrance 'magically' appear and Nim step through it. "How did you...? I couldn't find any kind of doors or switches or anything." She stares at Nim incredulously but with a hint of admiration and a wry crooked smile. [Which may be one of the first time you've actually seen her smile.]

Aduan simply stands at the newly created doorway and peers inside.
Feb 29, 2020 8:16 pm
What I posted for Rhaezon earlier

Inside the Dome: The air is cool and moist, and somehow there are thriving green potted plants giving the whole place fresh air. Most of the interior, however, is filled by a maze of machinery. Spinning turbines, rotating dishes, and banks of control panels and interface stations. The floor is made of multicolored ceramic tiles.

There is also a panel in the side of one of the large machines that has been removed, exposing a cylindrical space where something obviously gets "plugged in" and affixed to some wires, cables, and conduits. Rhaezon has a cylinder that obviously fits into that space, along with various wires and prongs that would allow it to be connected to the larger mechanism, but just as obvious is the fact that the cylinder has burned out from the inside. It is blackened and partially melted.
Mar 1, 2020 7:22 pm
I got no clue what this place is for but something is obviously broken, is it something we can figure out by ourselves or do we need to find those Priests first?
Mar 1, 2020 8:07 pm
"I found this," Raezhon says as she approaches her companions. "It fits into that apparatus over there." She takes out the cylinder and shows it to them, then takes them to the place inside the dome where she found it. "It looks like its completely fried now. I wonder what it did when it worked?"
Mar 1, 2020 10:06 pm
Having heard and seen everything that's happened inside the dome, Aduan calls out from the doorway, "I know what I would like it to be although it would take a lot of expertise and work to fix it."
Mar 1, 2020 11:26 pm
What do you think it is?
Mar 2, 2020 3:06 am
Nim makes a mental note to inquire about Rhaezon's method of entering the dome later. Clearly intrigued and curious. Nim takes a thorough look around for any more useful items or hidden rooms in this place and then joins the group near Rohim. "I think I might be of a mind with Rohim on this. Maybe finding one of these "priests" would be our best next step. I have a feeling this machine malfunctioning could be the answer to a lot of questions on the venture. However it doesn't look an easy fix without some more information from one of it's operators."
OOC:
I don't think you mentioned any other rooms in here? In any case I'll roll to look for useful items/information and any other entrances or rooms, stairs, levels etc. if that's cool. then I'll use scan(1 int point) to try and glean any more info about the function of the broken machine.

Mar 2, 2020 3:18 am
Nim with the help of anyone else taking a careful look around find:

• A level 7 cypher that looks like a pair of metal goggles (it needs a new strap). The wearer learns the level of whatever she looks at once they are activated. Activation lasts 1 hour.

• A level 6 cypher that looks a little like a glass wand with a copper tip. When activated, any one metal object level 6 or lower touched by the copper tip instantly disintegrates. The object can be up to the size of a human, but if it is larger, it does not work.

• A level 2 cypher that sprays out a thick viscous liquid. Within the liquid are incredibly fast-acting microscopic repair units that mend a break or tear in an object (or fuse two disparate objects held together).

• An oddity that resembles a toy doll made of synth, but the doll is of a creature that looks like nothing anyone’s seen before, with a large number of asymmetrical limbs, all different sizes, a long neck, and a four-eyed head.

Unfortunately, you do not find a replacement part for the cylinder that burned out. You do discern that the last people to enter had clearly been interested in that. Whatever brought the Aeon Priests here, and had them leave the dome later, remains a mystery. You did also find their spare clothing and food packs, indicating they had planned on returning.

Mar 2, 2020 4:17 am
Rohim determines that the part is likely broken beyond repair, and charging it won't help.
Mar 3, 2020 6:48 am
Raezhon considers Aduan's words. "The dome seems to be operating just fine - the weird doorway opens, the temperature inside is regulated, and the plants seem to be doing okay, so I doubt it was a power source. Well, certainly not THE power source. Its seems more likely to be a fuse or circuit or something like that connecting this bit of whateveritis to whatever is powering the rest of the place."
Mar 3, 2020 5:32 pm
@Aduan "You mean the whole place or the broken part?"

@Raezhon "I agree with you, if the broken part was a power source I would be able to charge the device, if temporarily. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

@Everyone "It is possible the Priest knows where to find a replacement part since they were clearly moving out with the intention to come back. Do we have any way to track them if it gets dark outside? There is a few hour of sun left, but we don't know how far they are."
Mar 3, 2020 8:44 pm
"I didn't mean I thought it was a power source. I said I wish it were a power source. But that's no longer of much importance since we can't repair it now. I agree that we should go find the priests."
Mar 4, 2020 3:00 am
You know that the Aeon Priests were likely taken by the margr band. Those tracks would be easy to follow.
Mar 4, 2020 3:26 am
While discussing, Rohim browse the cyphers. He takes the glass wand with a copper tip and leave his Antivenom, level 4, pill, in exchange. He will also add the oddity to his pack if nobody else shows an interest.

"Tell me when you are ready to move.

Then he will refill his water and food from the priest stash and check out his weapons until the group moves out.
Mar 4, 2020 6:36 pm
"I'm good to get moving." Nim eyes the cyphers, halting for a moment on the repair liquid which he feels he might regret not taking later, however decides to keep his current possessions in the end.
Mar 4, 2020 8:46 pm
Aduan waits at the door for the others to leave and scans the room one more time just in case someone or something was hiding. If he sees no movement he will back away from the doorway and join the others.

The Margr Marauders
[ +- ] margr
[ +- ] aneen
You follow the obvious trail left by the margr. After a few hours, you find the scene of butchery and cooking, and more remnants from Aeon Priest clothing, but no gear. The signs are not very old.

You close the distance after another day of walking, enough to make out a dozen or so of the creatures, some mounted on aneen.

There are 11 margr and their very large leader. The group has four aneen, but they use them as pack animals, not mounts. The abhumans make their way with no particular hurry, so even though they have a considerable lead, you can catch up with them.

When they stop and make camp, the margr set up a perimeter patrol of one individual who circles around the camp, and another who stays awake on watch in the camp near the resting aneen. The remaining margr sleep. A blanket with odd objects is laid out near the sleeping leader in the middle.

She pulls a synthetic bowstring from a small pouch at her belt and begins stringing her weapon. Nim is about to throw his weapon when he decides on a different route. He focuses his mind a moment and begins to channel his energy (honestly not sure if this attack is considered using Numenera or not) into an onslaught (4dmg 1 intellect point) against the now stunned leader

Rolls

Onslaught attack (4 dmg, 1 intellect) - (1d20)

(14) = 14

Mar 18, 2020 2:05 pm
Nim's attack further wounds the leader, who had taken a total of 12 now.
OOC:
Yes, you performed that action correctly, Jay10
Mar 18, 2020 8:02 pm
Aduan watches the other areas of the camp to make sure no one is stirring. If they do, he will perform a physical Onslaught on them.
Mar 18, 2020 8:13 pm
Everyone is stirring. Only, you have the initiative. Who do you target and make a roll.
Mar 21, 2020 4:39 pm
Bump for Aduan.
Mar 21, 2020 7:25 pm
Aduan creates a physical Onslaught against the closest Margr who is most awake other than the leader.
OOC:
I'm still lost on what additions or subtractions that can be made to an attack roll. Aduan has 20 available Intellect points, an effort of 1 and an Intellect Edge of 1. I know that the Intellect Pool points can be used up but I'm not sure about Effort or Edge. I'll roll the attack d20 and let Q modify by whatever is appropriate if I can use effort or edge.

Rolls

Physical Onslaught attack on a non leader Margr - (1d20)

(15) = 15

Mar 21, 2020 7:37 pm
OOC:
Effort had two options: refugee the difficulty of landing an attack, or increase the damage done by 3. Spending effort costs three from your pool. Edge reduces the cost of spending from your pool by 1. Effort adds to the cost of using the ability, rather than counting as a second spend (for purposes of applying Edge.)

These mooks are each to hit, so spending Effort makes more sense for damage.

Onslaught costs 1 Intellect. Adding increased damage would cost 3 more, for a total of 4. Edge of 1 reduces that cost to 3.
Aduan strikes out and takes out a sleeping foe. (Physical damage from Onslaught is 4, less 1 armor, plus 3 effort from damage = 6 net damage. The books have 6 health so that takes them out.)
Mar 21, 2020 7:46 pm
The margr awake screaming in hate and confusion. They grab their weapons, rise to their feet, and get ready to attack.

The leader ready to lash out with a knife at Rohim, shudders at the electric pain ravishing his body.

You are all up again. There are seven mooks remaining plus the wounded leader:
- 2 mooks on Aduan
- 3 mooks on Nim
- 2 mooks and leader on Rohim
Mar 21, 2020 8:41 pm
Rohim take a step back and let loose a arrow at the leader from
[ +- ] point blank range
, trying to finish him before he gets back to his senses.
OOC:
Spending 3 speed point for effort on dmg

Rolls

Ranged Medium (Point blank) dmg4+ effort 3 - (1d20)

(2) = 2

Mar 21, 2020 8:49 pm
Rohim's attack misses (the leader is difficulty 3).
Mar 21, 2020 10:52 pm
Raezhon races over to help Rohim dispatch the Margr leader. She attacks unarmed, fists and feet striking in a flurry of blows to the face, throat and midsection.
OOC:
Since this guy seems tough, I'll use effort to ease the task. Here's an odd question - unarmed is usually a light weapon so it eases the task by one, but since I have No Need for Weapons and strike for 4 damage, does that negate the 'easing' for unarmed?

Rolls

Unarmed Strikes - (1d20)

(20) = 20

Mar 21, 2020 11:15 pm
OOC:
No, a light weapon is always one step easier for attacks.
Would you like to narrate the killing blow, Raezhon?
Mar 22, 2020 12:43 am
OOC:
Awesome!
Raezhon delivers a brutal kick to the goatman's head followed by a elbow drop to the throat, collapsing its trachea. The creatures eyes bulge as it claws at its now useless throat, gasping for breath. in a matter of moments, its frantic actions slow as consciousness leaves it. Raezhon turns to face the next assailant, body low in ready position.
Mar 22, 2020 1:58 am
Once again Aduan fires a physical Onslaught. This one against the Margr who is closest to him. He will use his rapier for defense if the other one gets too close too quickly.
OOC:
Again with effort and edge.

Rolls

Onslaught attack on closest Margr - (1d20)

(7) = 7

Mar 22, 2020 2:08 am
Difficulty 2 to hit the regular mooks, so a 7 hits, and 7 damage (less 1 armor) takes out another.

Nim is up.
There are six mooks remaining:
- 1 mook on Aduan
- 3 mooks on Nim
- 2 mooks on Rohim
Mar 23, 2020 5:13 am
OOC:
Can I gain some distance and use my detonator on the 3 near me (Which is a cypher: Detonation(spawn), level 4, wristband projector) in the same turn? if not I'll use this turn to gain some distance from the three near me, preferably towards the leader and my thrown weapon if possible.
Mar 23, 2020 1:12 pm
OOC:
There is an ability from The Strange that allows you to move a short distance and still act, but requires a roll. I'll allow you to try with a difficulty of 4. If you fail, you move a short distance but don't get the cypher usage off.

Fleet of Foot: If you succeed at a difficulty 2 Speed roll to run, you can move a short distance and take an action in the same round.
Mar 25, 2020 5:38 pm
OOC:
Alright here goes nothing. I'll apply effort on the speed roll if possible.

Nim attempts to deftly create distance between himself and these newly awoken creatures whilst using his cypher to detonate an explosion amongst the three that were nearby. Hopefully killing 3 birds with one stone.

Rolls

Fleet of foot (+1 effort) - (1d20)

(18) = 18

Mar 25, 2020 5:57 pm
OOC:
That looks promising!
Mar 25, 2020 6:13 pm
Boom. The three margr explode, each taking 4 damage, leaving them fairly heavily wounded. The explosion bowls Nim over but he doesn't take any damage himself, and rolls to his feet.

The margr are going to bail, turning and running for their lives.

You can make a ranged attack if you want, they're now a short distance away, or let them go.
Mar 25, 2020 7:00 pm
Rohim let the Margr run, instead focusing on calming the aneens that might have have been scared by the short battle and sudden explosion.
Mar 25, 2020 7:36 pm
Raezhon draws her bow and quickly throws a question out to anyone who might have an answer. "Do you think they know anything we need? I can try to stop one." She takes careful aim at the legs of one of the fleeing Margr, and holds her shot, waiting for a response.

Repairing the Receiver
All you need to do, now that you have the cylinder back, is return to the dome and replace the cylinder. This resets the receiver, which sends a message to the source of the dreamstate transmissions, effectively ending the nightmares of all the people in Redstone. The return to the village is uneventful.

THE AFTERMATH
The people of the town are overjoyed at your triumph. They throw a feast in your honor (after they all get some sleep), and it is certainly true that you will never need to buy a drink or even a meal in Redstone
for a very long time.

The people are horrified at the death of the clave, and ask the PCs, if they are leaving, to please spread
the word that the village needs new Aeon Priests. Under no circumstances are you allowed to take possession of the clave’s tower or any belongings currently within it (loot taken earlier is beyond their ken), although any breaking and entering they committed will certainly be overlooked.

After another day or two, Deymish wants to leave, and he is the easiest way for them to get out of Redstone. Out of gratitude, Corl Vehm pays him for his (now unnecessary) cargo, so pays you your salaries.
You can each take 6 xp for your part in this adventure. I'll post the next adventure introduction tomorrow.
