After a night of sleep, whether restful or full of anxiety, you awake the next day to a slightly odd voice of extreme clarity and with a somewhat very proper accent, "Good morning Volunteers! My name is Coppertop 5. It is Monday, September 3, 1883, and it is time to get you registered with the Tesla Ranger corps. If you would please get dressed and meet in the Mess Hall in 15 minutes for breakfast." As each of you awakes you will notice standing in the doorway to the Barracks the curious sounding person that just spoke. It's a cog! Its exterior is primarily brass, however, his cranium area is a polished copper. He begins to turn and walk out.
You each awake and possibly notice each other for the first time within the Barracks. You are the only 6 in the Barracks.
OOC:
The slightest sound of mechanical gears and miscellaneous operation whirrings can be heard with a successful Notice Test (TN 4) at a (-1 penalty to your roll) for the volume of the sound if you choose. You each awake and possibly notice each other for the first time within the Barracks. You are the only 6 in the Barracks.
OOC:
Feel free to playout the first few 15 minutes as you all wish. Essentially you have 15 minutes to meet in the Mess Hall. Each of your characters would have been made aware upon entrance or otherwise about the location of the Mess Hall.Jan 15, 2020 11:57 am
As Collie notices that it is a cog that called them to wake up, she jumps out of bed and runs up to Coppertop 5 before it can get away too far. Without any hesitation or coyness, she inspects the machine before even saying a word to the other recruits. She'll have the opportunity to get to know them later.
Also: Can I make some sort of check to get more info on the cog?
OOC:

Good to know! Thanks for the heads up on that, and yes we can go with your Notice roll for a bit more info on the Cog as you quickly inspect him.She first realizes it is like most cogs she would have encountered, being that it is built in a "human" form (two legs, two arms, hands, think C3P0 but slightly more fluid in movement, not so rigid). She would notice that it has a shiny steel plate attached to its upper left chest area that reads Babbage Calculations Company. She also indeed hears the gears moving and would know that it is a miraculous contraption of gears and Tesla Science electricity. The exact interior functions would require some time and conversation.
The cog pauses for a moment as Collie moves around doing a quick inspect. It gives a brief pause as to not stifle her curiosity. After a moment it says, "Pardon me Ma'am, I must be going." It then continues on out the door.
OOC:
If you would like you could do an Electronics check for a bit more information. Although not the exact science of the Cog it is closely related. So, perhaps at a (-1) being that it isn't entirely "electronic".Jan 15, 2020 12:59 pm
OOC:
A GENERAL NOTE ON COGS: Most of your characters would know that Cogs are generally service bots (non-threatening to humans) created by an American company in conjunction with some European sciences. Without a roll they wouldn't know much beyond that because although they're aware they exist, they are not entirely common.Jan 15, 2020 12:59 pm
Vivian wakes up groggily then noticing the glint of a metal form she reaches under her pillow and then curses.
Then seeing Miss Welles run after the thing.
"What are you doing ?" then things get more clear when there are no alarms raised and no harm came to Miss Welles. "Must be a Babbage bot."
Looking around, "Morning Yall."

Nice. To reinforce the idea that Vivian is knowledgeable about the "Babbage bot" she recalls one that worked with the carnival perhaps? Just to justify it without a knowledge roll, etc. :)Jan 15, 2020 1:23 pm
"Fascinating!", Collie mutters, ignoring the cog's wish to move forward. "Say, would you mind if I took you apart later? Just to see how you're running. I'll definitely put you back together afterwards, don't worry. There's no doubt in my mind you would be just the same as before, possibly even better", she speaks to the machine quickly as she is blocking its way.

As Collie moves around in front of Coppertop 5 it abruptly stops. "I do say madame! You are quite insistent. I'm not certain Master Calvin would permit to my disassembly, but you may speak to him if you would like in the Lab." He respectfully attempts to walk around you and go on his way.

Collie makes sure to remember the name. She will have to talk to him later. It sounds like he might be her key to understanding this strange new Tesla technology that she just has to get her hands on.
She steps aside and gestures for the cog to move past. Then she returns to the others. "Come on, wake up, everybody", she calls out. "Nobody has ever changed the world in their sleep!"
She grabs the pile of clothes she threw on the ground next to her cot the previous evening and heads to the women's washroom to get dressed.

The sound of voices pulls Roland away from a surprisingly restful slumber. Upon awakening he groggily stretches out and lifts his heavy head off the pillow to greet the day. He immediately notices the source of the voices coming from a rather curious woman and a brassy clad robot gentleman Roland can only assume is one of those European-American service bots they've dubbed "Cogs". Roland has never been entirely uneasy around their kind but is still a little distrustful of the idea.
As his senses are regained from slumber slowly he notices the curious woman attempt to raise everyone from their beds with a wake up cry and head off to the washrooms. With the last bit of awakedness reaching his body he gives one last yawn and stretch and lets out a "GOOOOOOOD MORNIN'!" He cracks the last bit of morning fatigue out of every last joint and says "Time to get this show on the road." He then begins to get ready and unpacks his things from his locker. The first of which is the tiniest orange tabby kitten, tinier still compared to Rolands stature, which he gives a morning snuggle to before it climbs itself onto his shoulder. "Mornin' Oliver." He mutters to the kitten before continuing to prepare for the day.

Doc Murph wakes and takes a leisurely stretch, noting the Cog with a bemused grin. Not sure what I expected, but I'm not surprised the Rangers have a few cogs in the auxiliary. He thinks to himself. He watches Collie run after Coppertop and cocks his head, Looks like at least one of the folks takes after my own heart.
He stands, pulls on trousers over the long underwear he slept in, stretching suspenders over his shoulders before walking after Collie just in time to see Coppertop begging her leave.
"Fascinating machines, aren't they?" He says from behind Collie, waiting for her to turn before holding a hand out in greeting, "Pleased to meet you. Dr. Gregory Murphy, but you can call me Doc Murph. I'm guessing you're as fascinated with Mr. Tesla's technology as I am"

Doc would notice the same brand plate on the cog about the Babbage Calculations Company and the same audible sounds; gears turning and a whirring sound. However, he would think this cog also has no Tesla Science involved in it at all. In fact, he is certain it's not really operating on anything Tesla related. This cog might even run on recycled horse urine! ;)Jan 15, 2020 8:09 pm
Collie, who now that her initial enthusiasm at the machine that drove her out of bed has died down a bit, suddenly feels the pain in her bad leg again. Luckily for her, she slept in her leg brace, just to be prepared for an emergency in the night. Otherwise, she would have collapsed the second she jumped out of bed.
She shifts her weight to relieve her bad leg and shakes the man's hand. "Nicolette Welles, yes, the daughter of that Nicolas Welles." She says that name as if Murph should know it. "Call me Collie for short. Everyone does."
A smug smile appears on her face. "I'm an engineer. Haven't had a chance to really inspect the Serbian's tech but I bet you, I'll have it figured out in no time!"

Monte looks at the cog with disdain. The life of a trapper is a largely solitary one, and the denizens of the profession often go great lengths of days, weeks ,or even months without seeing a single living soul; an arrangement good for everyone given the trapper's inherent meanness and poor people skills. Stumbling upon a humanoid machine deep in the woods is as unlikely as finding a ten foot tall beaver.
The bulk of Monte's exposure to machines of this nature were encounters with them while in Philadelphia negotiating pelt prices with tight-fisted fur trading company men and then in armed conflict with their larger, nastier cousins, who have now taken over all lands west of the mississippi, and who are currently interfering with his ability to return to his territory to begin profiting from the fine prices he finally negotiated.
Monte dresses and begins walking, hoping to find the mess hall, passing those admiring the machine without a word and giving Coppertop a nasty sneer, hawking a wad of spit at its feet as it passes.

John wakes and rubs the sleep from his eyes. Was that a...? He sighs and gets dressed, heading to the mess hall. Along the way, he takes out a hand-rolled cigarette and strikes a match to ignite it. Arriving at the mess hall, he takes a long drag and enters the facility. Seeing other recruits, he takes an empty seat and continues smoking his cigarette. "Morning, all. John Gregory's my name, up from Nawlins to sign up for the Rangers.
Jan 16, 2020 3:31 am
Doc watches Monte pass by and spit at the feet of coppertop, raising a quizzical eyebrow at the rough-hided man's disdain and casting a look at Collie. "Quite pleased to meet you, Collie. I'll admit that while your father's name rings a bell, I'm at a loss to tell you his significance. This Coppertopo fellow, on the other hand might be a bit of a red herring, if you see my point. Mr. Tesla's developed a fantastic technology, inspiring charlatans, counterfits, and pretenders galore. I do believe this Cog may be designed by just such a person. I doubt he's got a single spring of Tesla's design in his entire chassis!"
Doc will wait for Collie's reply before heading to the mess hall and hearing John's introduction.

Collie looks at the cog again as it moves away. She doesn't care about Monte's spitting. There's no harm in disrespecting a machine that's not even actually alive, after all.
"Maybe. It's still an awesome piece of machinery and I'd love to take a look under that shell" She grins at the Doc. "If you've never purchased a piece of tech by my dad, you definitely got ripped off", she says. "Now if you'll excuse me. I have to change before going to grab a bite."
A few minutes later, she joins the others in the mess hall, dressed in work clothes that look less comfortable than the loose shirt and pants she was sleeping in but more sturdy - something that apparently already came in handy, judging by all the stains and small, sewn up tears in the material.
"Everyone got a good night's sleep? Wouldn't want one of you to faint in training"

Looks like the party is moving on to the Mess Hall, so I will go with a description of that. If you decide to play out the first 15 or 20 minutes of the morning differently, just post a reply and we will roll with it.The Mess Hall is a large square building of brick block with wooden doors and windows. Two large chimneys reach through the roof towards what could be considered the rear of the building. You may notice the smell of freshly cooked breakfast. A set of double doors lead to the entrance up a few feet of stone steps.
Entering in the Mess Hall you'll see a large open room, high ceilings, large windows and hanging electrical lamps, with several wooden tables scattered about; reminiscent of picnic tables and benches. There is what would be some sort of self-service line (think buffet) to the left with ceramic trays, silverware and tin cups. Coffee, eggs, bacon and sausage are at your fingertips along with fresh biscuits. You'll notice a few soldiers eating already.
Upon heading over to the buffet you'll be greeted by short, stout woman with a quite jolly demeanor. You'll have some variation of the following depending on if you enter alone or with one of your new found companions.
"Well good mornin'! A new Tesla Ranger recruit I take it? Well, you won't be doing much "Rangering" on an empty stomach now will ya!? Help yourself to some breakfast. And, if there is anythin' ya need please be sure to ask. I'm Gilda, Gilda Goodwright.

"Well hi there Gilda, Im Vivian, nice to meetcha. Looks like you have a nice spread here."
Vivian selects a nice healthy meal but like women perhaps a hundred or more years in the future the portions are not large.
Once she is done selecting the things she wants she heads to one of the tables and waves her fellow recruits over.

Collie is there right next to Vivian, taking a slightly larger portion than the other woman. "Morning, Gilda. The name's Collie Welles. If you haven't heard of me yet, you soon will!" She shows her a wide grin and winks before following Vivian to the table to eat.
Jan 16, 2020 1:30 pm
"Shoot Collie, I am certainly looking forward to seeing your creations. We had a doc in the circus he produced all kinds of strange devices."
Jan 16, 2020 2:33 pm
Gilda responds to Vivian, "Well bless you darlin'. I do try to keep ya'll fed the best I can. Learned from my grandmother down in Savannah years back. Please enjoy."
Shooting a glance over to Collie she says, "Well, I haven't heard of ya til' now, but maybe you're right! Just don't let those big ol' metal goons spoil your plans of fame!" She gives an endearing chuckle, as she motions you to help yourself along the buffet.

Doc piles his plate until the pile teeters and threatens to spill over. "This looks downright delicious, Gilda. I think I'm going to be needing a nice fuel up for my first day of rangerin'!" The twang he tries to put on the last word comes out like a foreign language.
He follows Collie to the table and holds a hand out to Vivian, "Nice to meet you, ma'am. My name is Dr. Gregory Murphy, but you can call me Doc Murph if you'd like. Looks like the lot of us will be learning the ropes together! I'm looking forward to it."

"Why hello there Doc Murph, yes some training and some of the super science they are putting together and we can start to take our country back. Metal should be a tool, not an enemy."

Monte fills his plate with a small mountain of food as well. "Much obliged for the food, ma'am", he says with a nod, then quietly finds a seat near the others and focuses on stuffing himself.
Jan 17, 2020 12:08 pm
Gilda gives Doc a nod and a big smile at his comment on "rangerin'" before he scurries off to eat and chat with Vivian and perhaps Collie.
She also acknowledges Monte with a smile and a southern-inspired, "Well you sure are welcome sugar."

"So what have the walking bathtubs done to you all, that brings you here ? I lost a lot of friends to the damn things but Im curious about your stories. I think Collie here might want to study the things and see what went wrong with em."
Jan 17, 2020 12:42 pm
"Am I so predictable?", Collie asks with a grin. Of course it was obvious why she was here. Ever since arriving, she hadn't talked about anything except her engineering expertise and interest in machines. She then turns her gaze to the other new recruits. "Interesting question, though. Why are you all here? Just felt like blasting some machines?"
Jan 17, 2020 5:17 pm
"I'm here as a good patriot of course! Reclaim the manifest destiny, bring the continent to heel!" Doc smiles with a wink, "But that's only a piece. My own motivation isn't so far from Collie's to be honest. Mr. Tesla has introduced the world to a technological marvel and I've been studying his science and experimenting with its application. There's only so much you can do in the lab, though. I'm here to test out my inventions and see if I can't keep improving amd developing them and other applications. Mr. Tesla is thrice the brain I am, but it'll take scientists of all stripes to really find the limits of this new technology. I've got a few skills from my past life that might be helpful besides, so I figured the rangers might find some use in me."

Roland makes his way to the rangers breakfast and fills up a plate. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance Gilda, many thanks for the food. It is sorely appreciated." After filling up a full plate of food, he immediately starts filling up a second plate of significantly less rations and places at his feet. Oliver, the orange tabby reveals himself again from Rolands large overcoat and begins to dig in to a slice of bacon. Roland rejoins the group as Doc Murph is sharing his tale, giving a nod to those he may not have had a chance to in the morning and digging in to his own portions.
Jan 17, 2020 8:41 pm
Gilda looks Roland up and down and hears his sincere thankfulness and begins to reply, "Well bless you...you're quite welcome. You go on and.....", she pauses and peers down at Roland's feet as he moves to put the food down for Oliver. She then sees Oliver, "Well I see you don't travel alone! What a cute cat." She addresses the cat, "You eat up too!" Seemingly not caring that Roland took some food for the cat she smiles happily.

Monte responds to Vivian without looking up from his food. "No friends. They interferin' with our fur tradin' prospects out on the Montana Territories. Traipsin' all over our trappin' lands, threatenin' our way of life and interferin' wi' any of us tryin' to make a livin' harvestin' pelts and sendin' 'em east. I come east o' the Mis'sipi lookin' to negociate a deal on beaver hides wi' a tradin' company outta Phil'delphyuh on'y to find the way back west closed off right before I could get back to my lands an' begin' makin' good on my trade. "Well, we all do need to make a living and those metal menaces destroy lives in different ways. Though it seems tw of us here believe it will make their lives. That is an interestin take on the situation. Doc, Collie you two are definitely going to be fun to watch but don't ever think they are cute little experiments for you to learn from. Those things will pull you apart or fill you full of lead or iron faster then you can blink so bare that in mind should yah see one."
Jan 17, 2020 11:06 pm
"Tru enough. I've been at the range every day practicing with a pistol nearly three months now. I can appreciate the danger. I should be clear, too. I've got no quarter for those murderous machines. My experiments are locked up safe with the quartermaster. They're designed to defeat the menace, not tame it. It's a common misconception, but I believe Mr. Tesla's technology has been instrumental in combating these mechanical rogues, not responsible for them. You'd be surprised what good technology can do to help dull the sting from bad."
Jan 18, 2020 6:44 am
Collie shrugs. "I'm not a fool", she says."I know they're dangerous and they'll try to kill me without hesitation. I'm not planning to just let them do that."

Roland, whose been halfheartedly listening, his attention fixated on his grub, decidedlypipes in.
"Well I don't know much about machines like thems they have serving us or fighting us really. I just know anythings been turned on has a surefire way of being turned off. I reckon it can't be much harder n' rassling them big gators down south."
For a moment Roland consider this comparison.
"In any case I ain't got nothing 'gainst no hunk a metal. I'm just looking for something new out west. Grown a bit tired of what I seen around these ends and I'd sooner put it all behind me. And heck I wouldn't say no to a little adventure."

As you lot are having breakfast and conversing Coppertop 5 enters the Mess Hall and approaches your table.
Addressing you as a group it says, "Good morning again recruits. I trust the breakfast is satisfying for you all. It is currently 8:30 AM and orientation is 1 hour from now. It will be held in the Headquarters building, in the main conference room. Please be on time so that we may properly register you. If you have any questions please find me or someone in uniform."

I don't think that Monte would have one of those, having a d8 in the Survival skill, I'd imagine he's generally accustomed to keeping track of the passage of the day by the use of the sun, moon, and the stars.

What business brings you to the Armory?", the guard asks. He looks at you curiously. Possibly considiering that you're not in uniform and seemingly seeking entrance into the fortified building.

"Good morning, my good man. I'm one of those that came down to join up with the rangers. I turned over a couple of crates of valuable materials when I rode in and I was just hoping to check on them before I went off to the morning's orientation." Doc gives his best winning smile, trying to push down the concern that he has about the valuable equipment that he's brought with him. He hasn't slept in a building separate from them since the earliest prototypes and having them so far from him and not under his careful eye is eating at him slowly, even though he has no reason to suspect the rangers of foul play. Standing here in front of the guard, he wonders if he's started to develop an unhealthy connection with the devices, recalling the psychiatric theory of inanimate attachment that he'd learned in medical school, but quickly dismisses the thought.
"I'm sure they're in fine shape, but I just wanted to double check." He holds a hand out to shake and show that he's unarmed.

Also, Doc Murph would definitely have a watch, a gold watch in fact. I looked back at deadlands and used that gear list to buy one of those as well as some tobacco and a pipe, and have adjusted my sheet to reflect those purchases. Let me know if that source isn't a good one and I'll adjust costs.Last edited January 22, 2020 12:21 am

Doc takes the hand confidently and gives it a steady shake, holding the guard's gaze as he does. "You folks have set up quite the installation here. I'm very impressed."

The guard proceeds with the handshake and says, "Well thank you, Sir. Let me go ahead and get you inside. Talk to Quartermaster Gilliard inside to check on your equipment. Have a good day."
He unlocks a large metal door with a key and opens up. Inside the large block building, you enter immediately into a hallway, a half-door (waist-high) to the right acts as a sort of entrance to a small office and directly ahead are more iron bars to proceed through. A gentleman steps up to the half-door. He is an older gentleman, greying hair, wears glasses that seem as much a part of his face as his nose. "Ehhhhh. You must be the Doc?"

"I am, indeed. Dr. Gregory Murphy, but Doc serves right well by my estimation. It's a pleasure to meet your acquaintance. Would you happen to be Quartermaster Gilliard? I was just hoping to check up on the devices I'd brought in with me before orientation if that isn't too much trouble."

"Yep, that's me. I'm Gilliard. I figured you'd be comin' by to check on those things. Mind you I didn't go snooping beyond the requirements of my duty. I just had...well, I had to make sure there wasn't nothin' threating about em'."
He walks out and towards the iron bars and pulls out a key attached to his waist belt. He unlocks there door.
"This way." He opens the door and heads in. He shows you over to a corner where you see your property in neat order.
"Have a look if you'd like Dr. Murphy. Everything is as it should be."
He waits for you to inspect.

Doc makes his way over to his crates and opens them to inspect the contents, paying special attention to the Galvanic coils and tesla dynamo to ensure their integrity, as well as the devices themselves. He cradles the coils in his hands carefully, holding them up to his ear to listen to the quiet hum that's ever present in a well-charged coil.
When he's satisfied that none have been damaged or tampered with he will stand and turn back to Gilliard, "Much obliged, sir. I greatly appreciate your care of these objects. I do hope they'll serve as prototypes for invaluable tools for our push across the Mississippi." He pulls his watch out and takes a look at it, "Oop, and with that I must take my leave, I'm afraid. Orientation waits for no man!"

"It's not a problem Doctor. Do take care to not be late. I suspect I'll be seein' ya soon."
He leads you out, locking up behind himself as you go.
