Adventure 2 - Corruption in the Woods

Jan 18, 2020 1:34 am
With the light of the morning sun, the Trade Guild caravan continues on their way to the city of Martan to the East. You however, find your path to the West, guided by the ritual tracking the connection of Creak's amulet. Though the ritual cannot provide an exact distance or coordinates, it does provide a starting point.

The sky remains mostly overcast as you travel, holding the promise of rain and more summer thunderstorms, but remains just the promise for the week you travel along the Darlond Road. As your supplies begin to dwindle, you reach a small town nestled against a thick forest.

Entering the town, the local populous seems wary, as criers call out the latest news and vendors hawk their wares, underscored by the ring of smith hammers on their anvils. A surprising number of the city guard appear to be green dragonborn, though none appear to have the tail that Leha mentioned.
OOC:
It is about midday, and the town is large enough that you guys should be able to find just about any nonmagical gear and as its on a major road news from far off should be relatively easy to find.
Jan 18, 2020 4:32 pm
Faerlin, who accepted the goal find who Creak's was contacting on the thoughts to acquire coin and magic. She seem to think that she can manage such. It is evident what drives her. Goodness of the matter isn't it.

This is a good place to get more supplies.
Jan 21, 2020 2:50 pm
OOC:
Can we find any magical gear here?
Jan 21, 2020 6:42 pm
OOC:
I don't think I need any non-magical gear unless a component pouch counts?

Jahred was definitely a man of the city and town, and while he was not adverse to the open road, or even the wilderness, he felt relief once the familiar sounds of civilization filled his ear, though he knew it could have it's own dangers all too well. "If we're going to gather supplies and information, how about we get a room for the eve? Might be a good place to seek out information as well." He offered to the group. "Gives us a place to meet up if we get separated."

Anise had been quiet for a while now, after apparently embarrassing herself with that outburst. Not one of them supported her exclamation. Not even one of them decided to even respond to her, although the sudden disembodied voice was a bit of a distraction. Maybe it had not been the right time exactly, but that no one else felt the same was even rather disappointing now that she had had the time to think about it further. The fuzzy raccoon person was too cute... the Giant walked in the back of the group, lost in thought while following the rest of the group. She was not so sure what to do now, though. She'd like to make sure the children were alright, but as for her pilgrimage, Anise felt it was not quite going the way she had hoped. This would be harder then she had thought.

OOC:
I'm assuming that the group is looking for a place to stay while getting directions for some magic-item shopping, if you feel your character wouldn't then let me know and I'll make the change.
After getting directions from a passing local, you find yourselves entering the best (according to said local) inn the town has to offer: the Sheltered Tree Inn. Even from outside, the source of the name was readily apparent, as the entire building is built around the trunk of a large tree. The light within primarily comes from several softly glowing lights lining the ceiling along the beams and within the few branches on the first floor.

As you approach the barkeep, an orc-blooded man barely five feet tall, he barely gives your group a glance as he mixes a drink for a customer at the bar. He finishes the drink by grabbing the end of an iron bar from a small hearth behind the bar and plunging the red end into the mug, causing the drink within to bubble and hiss as the hot metal warmed up the contents.

Setting the drink in front of the customer, the barkeep turns to your group and asks with a thick, raspy voice like gargled glass, "You lot're an odd bunch. So long as you don't cause trouble you're welcome to a few rooms," he pauses to glare at Ranos, "and yes, itching powder in my trousers counts as trouble. You're lucky it was a year ago or I'd have thrown you out."

Turning his gaze to the group as a whole, he plasters a fake pleasant smile on his face as he asks, "Now then, what can I do for ya?"
OOC:
The description of the drink is an old colonial drink called Flip.

Water and information is what I seek.

"I..." Ranos begins, a small digit pointed at the sky, "yeahs, dat was probably me..." Moving his head from side to side and saddling up on a bar stool, Ramos looks around the bar, his eyes darting from here to there.

Finally, his eyes rest on Anise, " what cha haves?" He winks.

The large eyes of the Firbolg dilated as Ranos look upward toward her, nearly stumbling on the words. "I um... just water... Please." Glancing to the bartender to avoid remaining locked on the adorable banded-face, she added quickly as her stomach groaned. "... And something to eat. What do you have in the kitchen?" She did not have much money left, but enough for room and board. Tomorrow she could speak to the local spiritual leader, but she wondered what these brave adventurers had in mind for their next steps.

Faerlin enters and seems to have no interest of those inside. She seems a bit aloof. Awaiting to all are done chatting with the barkeep and takes his time, she tell him A room for the night. Something hot and picture of beer to wash it down. She then goes to occupy a table awaiting her meal.
Jan 24, 2020 5:36 pm
Reaching down below the bar, the barkeep pulled up a claw pitcher with softly glowing runes on its surface. Placing two mugs on the bartop, he poured water into them before placing them in front of Wahuhi and Anise and returning the pitcher to its original place. Turning around, he pulled three wooden bowls from a cupboard and walked over to a softly simmering pot. Taking a moment to stir the contents of the pot, he ladled the contents into the bowls before placing them in front of Ranos, Anise, and Faerlin.

The soup served seems to be a mix of leftovers from other meals: bits of several kinds of meat, onions, tubers, and other vegetables that blend together in a hearty, if simple, soup. As he places a pot of ale by the cooking fire, he cracks four eggs into a bowl before whisking in a white herb powder, a small amount of brandy, and nutmeg. Taking the ale away from the cooking fire, he begins pouring the two back and forth between containers until it flows smoothly. Pouring the mixed drink into a tall mug, he finishes it off by plunging a red hot iron rod into the drink and stirring it.

Placing the drink in front of Faerlin, the barkeep says, "Ground floor rooms are five silver daron's a night, chowder's a daron a bowl, water's two copper pence, Flip's five pence. The rooms come with two beds; for you legs, we have occasional fur trappers come through so don't worry about trying to fit into a normal bed. Anything else?"
OOC:
In case you hadn't noticed, I enjoy food and cooking. The soup is based off something I made that I called Pantry Chowder, essentially seeing what's in the pantry and fridge that are approaching the best-by date.
Jan 24, 2020 5:42 pm
Faerlin dishes out her coins with any gruff about pricing and such. She then attunes herself to the local charms of the place while enjoying her meal. She appears a bit aloof still, but alert to her surrounds. She says to the party, This place will do us well for the night. She has her spear handy near her.

Is there anywhere in this town that I may find items of magic?
Jan 25, 2020 6:26 pm
"I'll have a double order of that soup, with bread and if you have some cheese that would be so great! ... and can I get my waterskin's filled as well? And I'll take a room for myself. Thank you." Placing down eight silver pieces from a coin pouch she kept in her bodice, resting two large leather waterskins down. "And while we're at it... would you happen to have trouble from monsters in this town?"
Jan 27, 2020 11:39 pm
Smiling up at the innkeeper with a wide tooth-filled grin, Ranos eats by putting his snout into the soup and begins to eat.

Raddue sent a note to Meribson
"Ah, yes, and if cha had eeny sights of dah, uh..." he stumbles a bit before continuing, "...kenku... type peoples?" Sitting upright, soup dripping from his small nose, he launches into another question, "if cha has any places o' dah learning tings or maybe a praypray place dat be helpful, too."

Meribson sent a note to Raddue
Glancing over at Wahuhi as he smoothly palmed and pocketed the various coin placed on the bar, the barkeep took a moment to consider his answer, "Isn't anyone selling magical trinkets or doodads in town, but Ma's brother's a wizard o' some kind an' my sister's got that sorcery stuff."

As he turns to Anise, picking up one waterskin to fill it, his answer is stalled by the firbolg priestess spitting out the drink that had the texture of water but the flavor of mud. Moving the mug of water away from Anise, and sticking a finger in to make a taste test, had the barkeep glaring at the suspiciously innocent looking Ranos, "Five minutes. I warn you about causing trouble, and you don't last five. Minutes."

Taking the bowl of soup away from Ranos, the barkeep bellows out something in a guttural language that none of your group recognizes. Almost immediately after, a massive hand picks up Ranos by the back of his shirt and easily lifts him off his chair into the air. The apparent bouncer is either half or full orc, standing nearly seven feet tall, built like a lighthouse, seems to be covered in more scars than unblemished skin, and is missing half his upper lip. Meeting Ranos's gaze with his one good eye, the other a milky white, the bouncer growls out, "No messin' with the food or drink. Got it?"

As the troublemaker is being dealt with, the barkeep mutters a quiet, "Thanks dad," before pouring Anise a fresh mug of water and returning the coin for her food.

"No matter how many times you warn 'em, the furballs keep causin' trouble. Now then, you were asking about monsters. Nothin' like that, not to my knowledge, but be sure to stay indoors after nightfall, there's a killer on the loose."
Jan 29, 2020 1:31 pm
Also standing nearly seven feet tall, was the Firbolg, whose face sank from a bubbly and friendly demeanor to a seriousness that brings a loudly silent tension through the bar. Her large hand, reaching in a smooth non-hostile motion, she grasps the Half-orc bouncer's wrist where it was holding Ranos and spoke with a calm but distinctly insulted tone.

"Take your hands off of my friend this instance!" She spoke strongly but was not threatening, but attempting persuasive insistence upon the bouncer. Obviously speaking to the Barkeep rather than the bouncer, she continued. "By my honor, this one has done nothing wrong, and I will not allow you to treat him this way... Call off your man and I will fix the problem easily. "

Faerlin has a habit of not getting in to trouble. That is others trouble. Especially when it is a lose lose situation as far as gain. She gulps down her drink fast as she suspects the table might be less than stable soon.
Jan 29, 2020 7:35 pm
Putting on his best smile, Ranos shifting his eyes constantly back and forth between Anise and the very frightening looking orc while his legs flail helplessly, Ranos squeaks, "eeeek! Wats some harmless funs 'tween friends, now, eh?"
OOC:
Okay I'm done messing with party members and the bartender now, ya'll, I had my fun, I'll stop derailing the story. :P

Other than a component pouch, I really don't think I need any non-magical provisions.

Anise's eye went wide again, a sadness coming over them as she released the half-orc's hand. She had been wrong. Blinded by the cuteness, she had misjudged. Ranos had purposefully put something gross in her drink...

"My apologies Barkeep..."

With a deep frown, Anise stepped away from the bar and walked away from the group.
Jan 30, 2020 3:51 am
The somber air was cut by a burst of laughter. Setting down Ranos with surprising gentleness, the bouncer gave a grin made terrifying by his scars and disfigured lip to the barkeep, "See Junior, I keep telling you to lighten up a little."

The barkeep, now that the two are standing near each other the relation becomes apparent, rolls his eyes before sarcastically quipping, "Yes, because forgiving water that tastes like mud is a good business practice."

Still chuckling, the apparent father of the barkeep hollers to the retreating Anise, "If you're interested I've got a few ideas for return pranks."

Shaking his head in exasperation, the barkeep levels a glare at Ranos before very calmly stating, "You are on thin ice. Be glad my father finds your kind amusing. In regards to your earlier question, the local church is dedicated to Aengrist with all the bureaucracy that implies, while the closest thing to a library in town is my uncle's but good luck getting his permission to read any of his books. He never did think that my father was a proper choice of a husband for his sister. Or any elf for that matter," the last line muttered under his breath.

Much louder, "In any event, if you will be staying in town for some time you should know that there will be a festival in two days time. The typical events include dancing, food, games, and a number of competitions. If you really want into Uncle's good graces, do something to impress or interest him."
Jan 30, 2020 12:39 pm
"The hells did I get myself involved with?" Jahred murmers to himself as he orders a cup of Flip. "Two days time until a festival?" he says, looking at his companions, his thoughts are simple, he could do quite a bit of investigating in two days time. Of course, having help wouldn't be unwelcome, and for all of Ranos' mischief, he was certainly a mentally astute companion. "If the rest of you don't mind, maybe sticking around through the festival might prove wise. There's a lot we can find out if we don't simply pass through in one day." Festivals meant revelry, which meant drink, which meant loose tongues. Jahred couldn't help but glance at Ranos to see if the Rantar was on the level with him on this matter.
Jan 30, 2020 10:09 pm
Looking up at the barkeep and the bouncer as his feet touch the floor, Ranos's face splits into a large grin and he bows slightly at the waist in thanks. In response to Jahred Ranos says, "we Rantar loves a good party! A break from killin' gobbos would be nicest, me thinks."

Turning and taking off after Anise as she leaves, his feet pattering along on the floor, he shouts, "was jus' a lil' cantrips magic, last 'bout an hour and dats it! No damages at alls!" skidding to a halt in front of her he looks up and gives her a sly smile and holding his hands up in surrender. "Come to dah party, yes?"

I'll bunk with anyone that won't play tricks on me. I don't need a bed though, I'll sleep on the floor. I say, glaring at Ranos.
Feb 4, 2020 2:50 am
One by one, as the evening drew to a close, the members of your group made their way to the rooms provided. The beds were simple, but of good quality.

The following morning, as you enter the main dining hall you see the barkeep pulling two loaves of bread out of the oven, the aroma filling the air as he smears a small amount of butter on the top of the round loaves. A glance around shows the bouncer from the night before is nowhere to be found.

As he placed bowls of porridge in front of the group, the barkeep looks to Anise and with a resigned expression on his face, "As the younger brother, I have been volun-told to give this to you," he says as he hands over a folded piece of parchment.

Calmly walking over to the window that leads towards the main kitchen, he leans over and yells, "YA HAPPY? I GAVE HER YOUR STUPID LETTER!"

There's a brief clang of metal as what sounds like an empty pot hits the floor followed by a return bellow, "CROLAZAR DAMN IT, KAEL, DO YOU HAVE TO YELL IT FOR ALL THE TOWN TO HEAR?!"

Meribson sent a note to Banshionna

Faerlin appears to be in far spirits as you can best tell since she really doesn't ever smile. Such would look rather strange on her too. She says Bread is fine. as she takes some and porridge too. She eats with an appetite.
Feb 5, 2020 1:31 am
Anise bunked alone, and was up before the Sun, giving praise and preparing for her day. Having taken to her room soon after receiving proper food and drink, the bright-eyed Firbolg paid the Keep, Crolazar, for breakfast and the advance the next night's key-cost, so she could leave her things in place rather than dragging them around as they spoke to people. The letter she received was a surprise, and with a bit of confusion, she took the folded paper with her to eat, nearly choking on her food as she began to read, placing the letter away to view at a later time. Her fingers tugged at the recently-combed but still wild red curls as if trying to hide, as the rest of the morning's meal was finished in recorded time. Dressed in the robes of her faith with adornments of white and green and a holy symbol pendant laid across her blouse, The Firbolg headed for the door as quick as she could, eager to see more of the town.

"Bread and porridge should suffice." Jahred said as he took a seat with the others. He'd work on his food as he looked around the tavern, taking a moment to smile in amusement at the exchange between the brothers. While he was certainly curious about the contents of Anise's letter, his mind drifted off to other things. "I'm going to try and dig up some information after I resupply." He said to his companions after a bit of thought and food. "Anything anyone would like me to look into while I'm out?"
Feb 7, 2020 10:21 pm
Ranos tears at a piece of meat held delicately between both hands, "I'sa come wit choo, Jehreed, we's has a good times together, yes?"
Feb 8, 2020 4:24 pm
Anise stopped at the door, carrying a cloak around herself for greater warmth. "I had the same ideas, Sir, I'll join you as well..." Holding back the very real wanting to add 'if someone can behave themselves'.

Faerlin smirks (as she seldom does.), Always has been. He who never sleeps always watches.
Feb 15, 2020 8:09 pm
As the group leaves The Sheltered Tree Inn, you set out into the early morning bustle. At each intersection at least one guard is at watch, and the various inns are seemingly overflowing with folks from out of town.

Down the west road leading outside of town, colorful tents are being erected in preparation for the upcoming festival, while northwards the various shops are opening their doors. The ring of hammer on anvil joins the chorus of voices, songbirds, and all the sounds of urban life.

OOC:
Posted something in the out of character thread. Given the spacing of the information we've received, I decided to gather everything we learned in the previous adventure, both to better organize my own thoughts, and to put it all together for everyone else. Feel free to add to it as I'm guessing (if you're cool with it GM) that we've discussed this stuff while heading to town.

"So all I am needing is to restock some arrows and rations, perhaps use some of the funds we received from the Lady to get a lantern and some oil for those of us who don't see well in the dark. Otherwise, how do you all feel about us using the funds to acquire mounts? Or barring that, a pack horse we can share?" Jahred suggested to the group at large.

"If yous want, speed is good," Ranos puts a finger to his lips thoughtfully, "but I's fits anywhere so..."

OOC:
Honestly, I've been trying to figure out how to progress from this spot for the last day. With that in mind so that this doesn't get delayed by a week I'm going to say you guys find everything you need over the period of the day and skip to the morning of the festival.
The inn is much louder than yesterday as you wake up. A mass of voices echo up the stairs from the ground floor, though the only recognizable one is the boisterous laughter of the bouncer from that first night. As you make your way downstairs to the main room, you are greeted by the sight of what looks like the entire family.

Kael the barkeep is trying to act as manager of the apparent brothers and boyfriends with as much success as a goblin-herder. The bouncer is carrying a cauldron (one big enough to fit Ranos five times over) under one arm and a pair of burlap sacks under the other, all while a little girl is riding on his shoulders. The various sisters and girlfriends are streaming in and out of the kitchen carrying loaves of bread, pies, pastries, and other such goods for the men to take out to wherever they were heading.

In one corner, a surly-faced elf spends most of his time glaring at the bouncer and only softening his gaze when a short, petite elven woman crosses his field of view.
OOC:
In case anyone is still unsure, the family dynamic of the Inn is as follows: the big bruiser half-orc married a full blooded elf woman, to the disapproval of her brother, and upon retirement from mercenary work used the funds to buy the Sheltered Tree Inn. He worked there for years while raising a grand total of ten kids, and now the older generation runs the Inn and he acts as a free bouncer.
Feb 24, 2020 4:20 pm
Faerling works to get herslf away from the day festive activities in the Inn. She has found most don't care for her being around in general and she more then thrilled not to pursue that point either. She awaits for the party to rise and join her.

Hopping down the stairs, his equipment jingling, the Rantar rushes over to a barstool and climbs on up, huffing the entire time. "Goo' mornings! I's have someting to eats, pleese." He looks around in a way that he thinks is discrete looking for Banshionna and then continues, "maybe you can tells us 'bout dah party?" his face cracks open into a wide grin.
Feb 27, 2020 11:18 am
Jahred descended the stairs and took in the bustling family. He couldn't help but grin, such a dynamic was never his own, but it sparked joy to see a family so big, and mostly happy from the looks of it. Then he caught sight of the elf. He'd make his way close by, not in the man's space, but close by, as though finding a place to watch the chaos.

After a moments observation he'd turn to casually address the man, a smile on his face. "Now that's a family, eh? Big... happy..." He said in Elven, shaking his head before continuing "My father was a wretched crook of a man, tried to make me just like him, you know? Only loving family I ever saw were those of the friends he forbade me to see. And recently, just a few days past, my friends and I managed to rescue two children. Their family's were slaughtered by Drow, and they escaped! Only to be captured by goblins for... foul purpose. Such things are almost enough to make me lose hope in such a dark world, maybe make me jaded." he finished with a wistful sigh. "Then I see a family like this, with such energy, such life, and I know that if ever I have the pleasure of having such for myself, I'd thank the gods above for every day I had with them, flaws and all."

With that, he'd toss a wink to the man and say in Common "Enjoy the festival sir!" before approaching the bar to try and get some breakfast as well. He wasn't entirely sure why he felt the need to say that to the man, it wasn't his place or his business, but he hoped it gave him something a little brighter to dwell on.

I rub my temples. This whole thing is giving me a headache. Can we just go already? I am not fond of civilization and would rather be elsewhere.
Feb 27, 2020 3:37 pm
"Yes, yes!" says Ranos, hopping from foot to foot, "party party party!"
Feb 27, 2020 5:15 pm
After a fine breakfast to be sure. She is ready otherwise it seems.

Kael glanced up at the group and with a growl reached into a basket and tossed each person a warm loaf of bread about the side of his fist before snapping, "We're a little busy if you couldn't tell. The majority of the festival will be in the field on the West side of town, go there unless you want to be voluntold to help move stuff."

The elven woman levels a stern gaze on him as she comes out from the kitchen, "Don't be so rude Kael, I raised you better than that. You aren't too old for your father to take you out back to the woodshed."

"Is this really the time mother?" he all but snaps, seemingly out of embarrassment, but you can see a glint of amusement in both of their eyes.

"I'm a mother, embarrassing my children is part of the job," she quips with the hint of a smirk, prompting a snort from the surly elf.

Turning towards Wahuhi, a small, pleasant smile adorns her face as she walks up and offers, "If you would be interested, part of the Festival involves a hunt into the Green Wood. The hunter to bring back the largest prey is given a bow enchanted by my brother over there. to the rest of the group, "There are similar prizes for several of the games and events throughout the Festival. It starts today but will last most of the week."

The elf in question grumbles just loud enough to be heard, "What do you think I do most of the year?"
Mar 1, 2020 11:17 pm
I may well part take in some of the festivities. as she starts on her loaf of bread.
Mar 2, 2020 11:50 pm

Jahred shrugged. "Food for thought." he said before turning to the rest of the group. "Well, shall we be off to the field, or wait to be voluntold and put to work?" If this festival was remotely like any he had attended in the past, there would be food aplenty there, and while he was no hunter, surely there were contests he could at least attempt.
