Humans
Other than the elves and dwarves, humans have inhabited Theymeria the longest, though their knowledge of its history is a bit more skewed than the races that live longer. Historical evidence places the first humans in Theymeria around 1,000 years before the Era of Turbulence. Being hardy and adaptable, humans have been able to survive from the frozen mountain tops of the Western Mountains to the desert wasteland known as the Desert of Tomorrow. Humans are also the most populous race (despite such mediocre lifespans), mainly due to the fact that the have a penchant for reproduction.
Humans are mostly found in cities, although you could find one pretty much anywhere.
During the War of Rebellion (War that launched modern history, about 1000 years ago), humans were found on both sides, though a higher percentage sided with King Therian and the Monsk Empire (who ended up quashing the rebellion). In the most recent war, on the Continent of Pameria, known as the Unicorn War, humans primarily sided with the losing side, The Black Knight Rebellion.
Elves
The oldest of all of the races. History places the existence of elves as far back as 4,000 years before the Era of Turbulence. Elves are found everywhere, but the largest settlements are in forests and wooded areas. Elves are the second most populous race, due to their long lifespans.
Elves tend to keep to their own affairs as a race, though you will find individuals or certain groups to fight for their beliefs. During the Era of Turbulence, the different elves, just like all other groups, fought for land to settle.
High Elf
The second most common of the elf types, high elves are most commonly found in cities, particularly Mistvein (due to its College of Arcanum) and Alto Ke (due to its enormous library.) High Elves value arcane magic and knowledge more than their elven cousins, the wood elves.
Wood Elves
The most common elf type, although the least likely to be seen in a city. Wood Elves prefer solitude or tribal groupings. They tend to stay in the forests or roaming nearby lands. They value nature and balance.
Drow
The rarest of the elf types. The drow are a cursed race and generally seen as evil (most are) and cruel. They are a matriarchy and enslave the males of the species. Drow can be found primarily in the deepest drudges of the mountainous undergrounds.
Eladrin
Another rare race of elves. The Eladrin are rarely spotted outside of the deepest forest or the highest mountains. Some believe they are only a fable, heroes that only appear when the elven race is in need.
Dwarf
The second oldest race, next to the elves. Dwarves have become known as the workhorses of Theymaria, which is why they were enslaved at the conclusion of the Tribal Wars. Known for their hardiness, mining ability, and forging, dwarves prefer to reside in the mountains, but can be found anywhere. Dwarves are the third most populous race, due to their hardiness.
Hill
While most dwarves love mountains and live in the mountains, they are actually hill dwarves. Hill dwarves are the most common type of dwarf. You can usually find them in the foothills of mountains and cities, usually behind a forge.
Mountain
The next most common dwarf. These dwarves you will usually find in the mines or as part of a mercenary group. Taller and gruffer than their hill cousins, these dwarves are more likely to punch you then talk to you.
Duergar
The grey dwarves aren’t very common. The dwarves have shunned all dwarven traditions and instead generally serve evil overlords. Duergar are usually mean and tough as nails. They rarely smile and would rather kill you first and ask you questions later.
Halflings
Halfling personalities are usually fun and whimsical. They enjoy music and parties. You will find halflings with one of two ideas: Curiosity and adventure or danger and fear. The halflings that are curious tend to live lives as traveling bards, loveable rogues, or occasionally thieves. Halflings, even the curious ones, try to stay out of politics and wars. The halflings that live life scared, generally never leave their homes on the planes, instead they stick to community and family.
Lightfoot
These halflings generally love life. They are agreeable and oh so charismatic. You will find many of them in towns and cities, many as bards in your favorite tavern. Some venture out past the city gates, but they prefer the populated cities and their people.
Stout
These halflings love adventure. They travel with mercenaries or join thieves guilds, whatever the fates have in store for them. They handle travel better than their lightfoot cousins.
Gnomes
Gnomes are a curious and intelligent race, though can often be naive. Gnomes are usually used on both sides of any conflict, due to their ability to build and manipulate magic and magical things. Gnomes can be found anywhere, whether it be a large city, researching and building magical items, or out in the wild, finding and manipulating ancient magicks. Gnomes don’t particularly care about war or politics, but love to watch their inventions at work. Gnomes don’t generally have familial ties once they leave home until they marry and have their own families.
Rock
Many think rock gnomes are insane and in many cases, they’d be correct. But through that insanity, real genius lies. Rock gnomes are tinkerers. They love traveling with adventurers and showing off their new inventions and even inventing things for their friends.
Forest
Forest gnomes are quite different than their rock cousins. They prefer seclusion in nature to work. They talk to animals and have the animals help them create all sorts of things to make nature a better place and protect their animal friends.
Deep
Deep gnomes are different from both of their cousins. Deep gnomes prefer the secrecy of the deep mountains. Being smaller than drow and duergar, deep gnomes have to be more intelligent. They use their natural abilities to build traps and warnings against the drow and duergar. One of the few nomadic groups left, deep gnomes seem cold and mean, but that is just because they are untrusting. Earn a deep gnomes trust, and he’ll protect you for life.
Tieflings
A fairly new race to Theymeria, Tieflings are widely distrusted, probably because they look like demons. While this isn’t true for all tieflings, most do have a tendency to be on the wrong side of the law. Call it nature or call it societal discrimination, either way, it’s true. Despite their racial shortcomings, Tieflings are fast talkers and tend to prefer talking than fighting. Throughout the years, many have made living as advisors to the nobility, even if few have achieved nobility themselves. Tieflings usually prefer not to engage in physical combat, but have been known to whisper war into existence.
Tieflings don’t vary racially, but their appearances do. Some have more prominent horns, others have deeper shades of red skin, a few rare ones even have wings.
Dragonborn
Dragonborn are fairly new in Theymeria, first appearing around 2,500 ET. No one is quite sure where they came from, many believe they were in caves underground and the Tribal Wars opened up an exit to the outside for them. Regardless of how they came to be, Dragonborn soon proved to be fierce warriors, many fighting as mercenaries. Due to the youth of the race, Dragonborn tend to be tribal and territorial, with most of them living in the shadow of the Mountains of the Lost. Because they feel no connection to any particular political empire, Dragonborn will fight with whomever offers the best deal, but this does not mean they will betray their employer if a better deal comes along, because dragonborn are fiercely loyal.
Half Breeds (Half-orcs, half-elves)
While not uncommon in the world, half breeds life rough lives. Mothers always die in childbirth with half breeds, leaving them to be raised by their fathers, if they stick around. Usually they are not accepted by either culture, though humans are a little more understanding.
Warforged
Warforged first appeared only 500 years ago. First created by gnome artificer Nikola Thomson, warforged were created to be sturdy, soulless slaves. Eventually, another gnome, Vitor Viit, found a way to transfer human souls into a soul crystal, which powers the warforged. Now, with the right amount of time, skill, and money, a human soul can be transferred into a warforged. This process is risky, however, and the soul could potentially be destroyed, instead of being taken in the ethereal plane. There are only about 300 sentient warforged in existence. When your soul is transferred, your mind is not, so newly sentient warforged hold no memories of their past. Warforged also vary, depending on their function.
Envoy
These warforged are specialists. That specialty varies, but they are the most versatile of the warforged
Juggernaut
The largest of the Warforged, juggernauts were built for destruction. Juggernauts are your front line fighters and were built as such.
Skirmishers
Skirmishers were designed to be quick, lightweight fighters. They are best suited in scouting situations and singles fighting.
Kenku
The mysterious Kenku are a fairly new race, evolved from the crows they represent. They have no voice of their own, merely repeating sounds they have heard. Kenku live in the cities and love to absorb new sounds and experiences.
Tabaxi
Tabaxi are a rare sight in Theymeria. They prefer the seclusion of the forests rather than the bustling of the cities. Those that do venture into the cities tend to be pickpockets and thieves, mainly because they are confused by city culture. They are curious but wary.
Firbolgs
A rare sight in Theymeria. Most of them live as a singular unit in the Hero Forest. On occasion you might find one adventuring, but they always return to settle down. Firbolgs are generally curious and peaceful, but won’t hesitate to strike if they feel they or nature are threatened.
Goliath
Goliath’s live their lives for competition. They want to be the best at everything but usually only see other goliaths as competition. Goliath’s prefer to be in the seclusion of the mountains, to hone their strength.
Kobold
Seen as sneaky and untrustworthy, Kobolds are widely distrusted and disliked. They tend to be evil and cult like, worshiping dragons and evil Gods. But not all kobolds are like this. Occasionally there will be a kobold who breaks the mold and can be worthy of praise and not death.
