Session Zero/Character Creation

Jan 27, 2020 10:00 pm
Hello, everyone!

Apologies that this took so long to get started, but university and family have kept me pretty busy this weekend, so I haven't had much time to plan, but I thought we might as well get the basics worked out.

Feel free to introduce yourselves to each other if you'd like and discuss what kind of character and class you're wanting to play. This game has gotten ALOT more applications than I anticipated, so I hope everyone is okay with a bit of a larger group than a typical DnD party but I think with the game campaign focusing on being in a monster hunting guild it will feel just fine. Things just may take a little longer.

Please go ahead and roll your stats(publically), or if you're going with standard array/point buy, just include those number values in the Top of your first post.
Jan 27, 2020 10:15 pm
I'm going to attempt to roll up a Bladesinger. Hopefully I'll get 3 decent numbers out the 6.

Rolls

Ability scores - (4d6, 4d6, 4d6, 4d6, 4d6)

4d6 : (4354) = 16

4d6 : (2253) = 12

4d6 : (2254) = 13

4d6 : (6324) = 15

4d6 : (4161) = 12

Jan 27, 2020 10:17 pm
EDIT: I'll be doing point-buy, by the way, I don't know where to assign what values or anything yet because I haven't decided a class but I just wanna declare that up-front (if that's okay with the DM).

Hey y’all!

I’m out and about right now so I can’t make my character or roll stats or anything well on my phone, but once I get to my laptop I was thinking of making a Wizard or Druid since those are the classes I haven’t played yet, if any of y’all really wanna play one of those that’s cool (I have loads of ideas) but I figured I’d go ahead and post something so if you’re unsure of what to play I can eliminate a few options for you lol.

I’m new to pbp and I’m super excited to be able to scratch my rpg itch during the week lol.

A friend of mine once said that D&D can be mostly divided into the math nerds, the theater kids, and the queer community, and while that’s obviously hyperbolic for reference I fall in the first category lol. I’m starting to get into more rp-heavy play though and I think this will be a great opportunity to push myself to rp more.

Oops, that's only 5. I thought I counted 6. I'll do one more but if it isn't a good one I may not be able to submit any character.
OOC:
So that gives me a 13, a 10, an 11, a 13, an 11 and a 10. There is absolutely nothing I can make from that. Unless our GM gives me a do over I'll have to drop the game.
Last edited January 27, 2020 10:21 pm

Rolls

6th ability score - (4d6)

(1541) = 11

Jan 27, 2020 10:28 pm
As I said before I am thinking of a Dragonborn Bloodhunter. My thinking is a cult who believes that the blood of dragons can give them unlimitless power, so they started experimenting.

With that I'm thinking standard array for stats and going two-handed weapons.

As to my color I'm leaning towards black, just not super sure.
Jan 27, 2020 11:38 pm
Don’t know what I’ll be yet.

Rolls

4d6

(4533) = 15

4d6

(5161) = 13

4d6

(1352) = 11

4d6

(4552) = 16

4d6

(5212) = 10

4d6

(6163) = 16

Jan 27, 2020 11:44 pm
As I already noted, I wanna go for the Battlerager Barbarian, a "screaming spiky ball of rage and death" as I put it.
Standard Array is fine for that and it'll obviously be a (mountain) dwarf (although a Tortle would also be very interesting...)

The Stats would be (after racial bonuses):
Str: 15
Dex: 15
Con: 16
Int: 8
Wis: 12
Cha: 10

Alright given that Wizard seems to be taken by a potential bladesinger my current plan is to go scout rogue. Expertise in Nature and Survival automatically means the rogue could essentially serve the function of a ranger without being one. Stout halfling. Backstory not set in stone yet, but likely he acquired most of his combat/survivalist abilities through hunting and his more rogue-y abilities being roped into shenanigans by childhood friends.

Stat array with point buy would be 9/17/12/10/14/13.

If the bladsinger bows out I'll probably make a wizard instead (or if the GM is fine with a bladesinger and an abjuration wizard, given their differences). If someone else wants to make a rogue they should! I'll make due with whatever class(es) we have left if indecision makes me lol.

The Bladesinger would most likely be using his spells to benefit his swordplay rather than stuff to benefit the party as a whole. And I didn't realize point buy was an option, only standard array.
Jan 28, 2020 12:28 am
If I go with standard array as a High Elf the numbers would be (after racial modification): 15, 15, 15, 12, 10, 8. One of the 15's is Intel, another is Dex and the third would be Charisma. Just waiting to see if that is approved.
Jan 28, 2020 12:56 am
Holy crap, CrossFire... I was actually thinking the same thing, or leaning towards elf blood hunter.

@Keyleth.. who gets to be the Blood hunter? or will there be two?

Rolls

Stats - (4d6)

(6425) = 17

Stats2 - (4d6, 4d6, 4d6, 4d6, 4d6)

4d6 : (3423) = 12

4d6 : (3341) = 11

4d6 : (3624) = 15

4d6 : (6616) = 19

4d6 : (6522) = 15

Also Matt Mercer just released a new version of the Blood Hunter on DMsguild.
It costs $ 8 and the money goes to Australia to help the fire victims.

Yes, Aldrusian. Your rolls were uhhh.... less than fantastic. Please use that instead. Lol
Quote:

There can be more than one. I've decided that I won't be too hung up on overlap in class choices, with so many player there's bound to be a little bit of that to happen and of course they'll each have their own flavor. It was just a preference, not a hard rule. I'd rather you guys play something that you'll enjoy than feel compelled to fill a specific role.

That being said, bloodhunters are still considered taboo, and uncommon but with the general desires of a bloodhunter being of a similar theme and them being seen as outsiders from most societies, they thus often find belonging in places such as a monster hunting guild.
Jan 28, 2020 3:17 am
Raven Queen Warlock ok?
Jan 28, 2020 3:49 am
Thanks, Key. Got that logged into the cs. Next step is that specific goody you suggested. A magic sword would be nice or special armor like Elven chain which used to be light armor if I remember correctly. Or were you thinking of something of lesser value?
Jan 28, 2020 6:50 am
I will go the risky route: *or if you're a risk taker, 3d6 x 9, take the 6 highest rolls.

Edit after rolling: That did not pan out well at all.

*Looks at people rolling*
*Original D&D flasbacks of doom*

I'll use the stat array and make a half-elf paladin of Tyranny. I was thinking of belonging to an order that subjugates evil and chaos through force and acts as intimidating jailors for all that would threaten civilization.

I'll likely use a shield and one-hander to be one of the tanky ones.

And 10 players? That's not a party. That's an army!

I'm planning on running a Blood Hunter, probably mountain dwarf. Still looking at what I can work within my rolls above. Leaning towards order of the Lycan, but that may change.

Please bear with me if I ask a lot of questions. I am fairly new to 5th edition and eager to learn.
Jan 28, 2020 2:51 pm
Do we need a warlock or a fighter more?
Jan 28, 2020 2:54 pm
I think we are pretty saturated on the frontlines, a warlock would fit better. But you can ultimately play what you want~
Jan 28, 2020 3:30 pm
Ok, looking things over, this is supposed to be a Monster Hunting party. Going Ranger Monster slayer. Ranged support for our front line peeps. Taking point buy.
Jan 28, 2020 7:31 pm
Lets see what they dice say

Rolls

stats - (4d6, 4d6, 4d6, 4d6, 4d6, 4d6)

4d6 - ( 1, 4, 6, 6 ) = 17

4d6 - ( 1, 5, 4, 1 ) = 11

4d6 - ( 3, 3, 6, 2 ) = 14

4d6 - ( 6, 5, 6, 6 ) = 23

4d6 - ( 4, 3, 4, 5 ) = 16

4d6 - ( 1, 6, 1, 4 ) = 12

So that is 16,10,12,18,13,11.... Smiles.. Sounds like the best rolls I have ever gotten....

Looked it over as I hadn't heard of it until now, very cool concept and good potential for story elements. Yes, that is okay.

Wizard is fine! You guys shouldn't step on each other's toes at all for the most part. Again, don't worry too much about class overlap, there's alot of you guys. And you've all gone with very different style characters so far.

Yes! There will be a few options that I will send each of you in a private note in this thread once the everyone has solidified and submitted their characters. Don't add anything yet though, it'll be apart of the introduction to the story. *wink*

Rolling can indeed be dangerous, but also allows for the chance of some great ability scores! Unfortunately, that sometimes results with some very athletic farmhands instead rather than heroes. XD

I like it! Sounds like that will make a good guild member!

Indeed it is! Or more accurately named, A Guild! lol

I’ve decided to go gnome abjuration wizard. Given we don’t have a cleric or bard yet, I’m planning on leaning into the support role with buffs and debuffs, with a few attack spells here and there to take on groups and weak enemies so the heavy hitters can focus on the biggest group/baddie in a given combat

Stats: 8/14/14/17/12/10
Character: Abjuration Wizard, Gnome

I've submitted my character sheet as-is. I haven't written anything for backstory yet, because I'm not sure if there's an area we need to be in at the start of the campaign or lore we need to know before fleshing it out? Should I just make up a hometown or should I choose one near the area, Keyleth? I have no idea how important that sort of thing is to this campaign.

Oh, and as a last thought, can we roll on the d100 trinket table (pg. 159-161 PHB)? It says in the book we can but I figure it's best to ask (it's just a "simple item lightly touched by mystery," according to the PHB).

Hmmm, my initial answer is no, but with the lack of enthusiasm with healer type characters I've seen and my curiosity in how it'll play, I will say yes for the time being. Flying and resistance at a low level is a concern for me, but since I'm a newish DM, I'd like to see how it plays first. So, yes. That is okay.

Yes, go ahead and submit your character when ready and I will look over it.

Don't worry too much about world lore, I will do my best to make the world as fleshed out as possible, but it wouldn't be extremely extensive. Just think of how your character came about and why they would end up in Monster Hunters Guild. I'd rather your character have a personality and a motive behind what they are doing.

I'm not familiar with it. To be honest, I mostly use content available online (broke college student). Would you mind posting a picture of the table in this thread and I'll look over it.

It is possible, goodies will could include something to that respect, but again, it will have to do with the individual and once everyone has submitted their characters. It will be included with the introduction of the story.

That sounds awesome! And adorable! lol. Hope you pick black bear for your appearance. XD

Oh god, yes. Please take the average for your hit die for that 1. I always take average on my characters and forgot to mention that was an option. If anyone else has that issue of a rolling a 1 or 2 for health, please take average of your Hit Die. From now on, hit die rolls will roll as they lie though for future levels.

Given we'd have known each other for about a year, I'm going to go ahead and yoink a system out of another rpg I've played and ask you all a few questions (e.g. "Which of you dislikes my childishness?") and if you want to answer any of them you can post them with as much or as little elaboration as you'd like, and that way we can get a sense of how our characters think of each other/interact at the start of the campaign, giving us some room to grow.

Obviously not everyone has to answer a question nor does every question need an answer, and if nobody answers any of these it really won't matter. These are just a few surface-level ideas and suggestions, and if you want to answer a question but qualify it please do!

My character description is in the character description forum.

-Which of you listens, or pretends to listen, to my long tangents about obscure arcane knowledge?
-Which of you tells me about your own passions?
-Which of you have I saved in battle?
-Which of you have saved me in battle?
-Which of you gives me piggyback rides?

-Which of you has little patience for my aforementioned long tangents?
-Which of you is guarded when you speak to me?
-Which of you underestimates my abilities due to my size?
-Which of you underestimates my intelligence due to my childishness?
-Which of you won't give me a piggyback ride despite the fact it would be really fun?
Jan 30, 2020 11:55 pm
I have no patience.
I am not guarded when I speak to anyone.
I underestimate everyone.
I will never give you a piggyback ride.
I’ve probably saved you in battle. (I took misty step and spare the dying for this reason.
Jan 31, 2020 12:32 am

-Which of you listens, or pretends to listen, to my long tangents about obscure arcane knowledge?

Only when they deal with transmutation or potion making. All the others I hrphm at and mumble useless
-Which of you tells me about your own passions?
not my passions but those of my order - we are trying to unlock the secrets of dragonblood.
-Which of you have I saved in battle?
I don't protect my flanks very well so you could have taken out someone trying to get behind me.
-Which of you have saved me in battle?
no heroics from me, so nope.
-Which of you gives me piggyback rides?
no room with my weapons strapped on sry

-Which of you has little patience for my aforementioned long tangents?
I listen for about a minute never two or more
-Which of you is guarded when you speak to me?
I speak openly of the mutagens I create and what goes into them
-Which of you underestimates my abilities due to my size?
never underestimates a mage
-Which of you underestimates my intelligence due to my childishness?
This I may question.
-Which of you won't give me a piggyback ride despite the fact it would be really fun?
I would but you may get accidentally cut or hurt.

Sounds familiar. I have no patience with anyone who is not an elf. I seldom speak to anyone who is not an elf. I will listen to anyone who has something to say about life and death but my connection to magic is likely quite different than anyone else's. I've never either underestimated or over estimated anyone. By the time that thought has entered my head the other one is most likely dead. I don't let people touch me let alone give them a piggy back ride. If you tried to jump on my back you would have a blade in your belly. I've never had a need to have anyone save me in battle. If I ever saved you in battle in was most likely done inadvertently.

I have little patience for your long tangents, but I am respectful and don't cause any gruff when you go on them.
Like the other Blood Hunter, I will speak of the passions of my order. I may speak on occasion of my dead wife.
Depending on the battle, I may or may not have saved you.

I am seldom guarded about my speech toward you. I will speak openly about lycanthropes and what to watch for. I never underestimate mages. They are as powerful with magic as I am with a greatmaul. Doubt I ever gave you a piggback ride, and I may not if given the opportunity to do so.

-Which of you listens, or pretends to listen, to my long tangents about obscure arcane knowledge?
Bhelram may be listening while he is doing other stuff, but he doesn't even pretend to understand anything about it.
-Which of you tells me about your own passions?
Probably not, or rather only if he is asked about it, for example the smithing and maintaining of his gear.
-Which of you have I saved in battle?
Probably once or twice. Bhelrams rage makes him focus on his next target, sometimes to the point of tunnel vision.
-Which of you have saved me in battle?
One time, when a dire wolf was getting ready to jump at you, Bhelram did the same and tackled the wolf away, proceeding to puncture it with multiple spikes on his shoulder before finishing it with a clean cut of his Axe.
-Which of you gives me piggyback rides?
Most of the time, Bhelram either wears or works on his spiked armor, so not much time for giving PBRs (Yes, that acronym definitely exists somewhere. Probably. Possibly. Maybe.)
-Which of you has little patience for my aforementioned long tangents?
Bhelram uses them more as pleasant background noise, since he, as said above, doen't understand a thing.
-Which of you is guarded when you speak to me?
Bhelram may be a rather silent fellow (outside of battle that is), but he is not guarded. If asked, he will answer most questions.
-Which of you underestimates my abilities due to my size?
Being maybe a foot taller than you, Bhelram won't underestimate you for your size.
-Which of you underestimates my intelligence due to my childishness?
Not really, but intelligence is not something Bhelram can really estimate anyways. He thinks you are smart, because of your hourlong tangents.
-Which of you won't give me a piggyback ride despite the fact it would be really fun?
1: Spikes 2: Size difference not that big.
If you'd ask, and he didn't wear his armor for some reason, he'd probably still do it.

Being around Cort it is quick to find she is easily violent in your face. She doesn't think much of the short one till she if he is any use. You can imagine you will never get a piggy back ride. You all probably realize that Cort has incredibly fast reflexes to go with her general violent attitude. Diplomacy is not her thang. It is better to have on her on your side rather than as an enemy. She favors chainmail and two short swords at once. She not to much into defense. Attack is her best defense. You have also found out that she is raise by a druid and holds many druidic attitudes. Not good to aimless damage nature in front of her, as your she will not say a word before she attacks. That attitude may very well exceed the level of her friendliness. She has an uneasy peace with all.

Your all aware Cort produce light to see by at night and obviously has no darkvision. She can also produce fire and throw it. Tends not use her light crossbow. She appears to some kinda of magical ability. She doesn't say it is any more than a gift. You know she can only hold one light up at a time, but is no limit to how much fire she can produce at will. You never really seen her try to light anything with it. It has been more for sure show.

She appears to be a hard person to chat with and not really social. Nature seems to be her only real interest. Gods are a dead subject with her.

Quick question: since I have 10 gp, and find familiar require 10 gp worth of materials, can I simply start with a familiar and 0 gp, given we're starting at 3rd level? Or do you want to play through having to find the materials and brass brazier to burn them in?

This is always how it has worked out. I've applied this character to at least 8 games over the years and not one of them has ever gotten started. I should just retire the character.

GM inactive 22 days now. This looks toasted. Game was set at 2 posts a day.
