Operation "Milk Run" - Day 1

Feb 8, 2020 4:25 pm
OOC:
After you've concluded your conversations, gearing up, acquiring a horse and finishing up any other local business at the fort, read on.
As you lot group up at the western gate for departure the First Sergeant steps up, "Alright! 3 days ride west-southwest from here. Just follow the trail." Master Calvin interjects, "What about the shortcut First Sergeant? They could take the pass of El Diablo Canyon." The First Sergeant replies, "Well, that is an abandoned route, although it would lead to some saved time. Hmmm. I reckon I'll let this lot decide on their way. You should reach the old overgrown pass somewhere in the second day of travel if all goes well." With that, they both wish you all good luck and godspeed.

11:00 AM - Heading Out

Heading just outside the western gate of Fort Ohm you all cross the bridge over the Mississippi River and into "western" territory commonly referred to as "No Man's Land" since the robots previously purged the land of virtually every human. As you put a few miles behind you and the fort you'll notice the land beginning to give way to mostly plains with some rolling hills. The dry, yellowing grass grows tall and wild as you all move farther away from the safety of the fort and its Tesla towers. The wind shifts, it creates a bit of a rustling sound that makes you all jumpy. Dark clouds in the distance threaten to bring rain...but they're some ways off.
OOC:
You're a few miles out from the fort...assuming you all left around 11:00 AM.
Feb 8, 2020 5:15 pm
"Annoys me that they couldn't wait to let me catch that robot", Collie comments. "But at least they're letting me bring it in."
She lets her eyes wander over the plains. "If we're lucky, we'll run into some cogs. That way, we could bring in even more tech to examine."
Feb 8, 2020 5:38 pm
"Hidden Cogs, now that is just bad business. A lot of people can get hurt if they cross the line and people will demand Babbage coggs to be decommissioned if it gets out of hand."
Feb 8, 2020 5:59 pm
"I'm with you there, Collie. I'd certainly rather run into em where we expect hostiles than otherwise. I wonder how they're holding up out there. Cogs developing subterfuge is fascinatin' and terrifyin' all wrapped up in the same blanket."
Feb 8, 2020 9:20 pm
Monte looks to the dark clouds in the distance.
OOC:
I want to make a Survival check to see if Monte can estimate the weather... I'm curious about the direction it's headed, and if it's headed toward us, I'd like to know how bad it looks, and how far out it is in terms of distance and time of arrival. I'll let the GM decide if his "Woodsman" Edge applies out on these plains or not, when it comes to weather, but if it does, he has a +2 bonus to this roll.

OOC:
In response to Monte's Survival roll.
A_True_Believer sent a note to funfungiguy
Feb 10, 2020 5:55 am
"Well I guess we should come to a kinsensus. We c'n take th' tree-day ride followin' 'long th' trail. Or we c'n try an' cut 'er down t' two days, passin' though th' canyin. My prim'ry concerns was flash floodin' sweepin' through, but it looks like them storm clouds o'er there shouldn't be any sorta issue and I'm figurin' we'll be seein' them pass us by... Still, I figure any op'tun'ty to shave a day's ride offa our trip's bound t' be too good t' be true, an' who knows what we're like to be findin' in the canyon. Anyunna yeh all got a position on th' matter they be wantin' t' share?"
Feb 10, 2020 9:33 am
"Let's cut this short. No need to be out here longer than necessary. I vote we get through this canyon before any of those guys can make a breakthrough discovery about the bad guy cog without me."
Feb 10, 2020 12:59 pm
"Sure thing, let's save time and exhaustion on our horses. Let's take the canyon." Not to mention our rears.
Feb 10, 2020 3:41 pm
"I'm in for the canyon."
Feb 10, 2020 5:26 pm
Ollie seems to meow warningly as if he is saavy to the decisions they're making. Roland comforts the cat and says. "I got a bad feeling about this... but then that's never stopped me before. I'm in for Canyon."
Feb 10, 2020 5:50 pm
Monte just nods.
OOC:
Sounds like we're headed through the uneventful and very boring canyon where nothing ever happens, to hopefully save a day of riding.
Feb 11, 2020 12:39 am
"I'm not one to stand between a man and his canyon."
Feb 11, 2020 1:56 am
As the day progresses you all continue down the winding dirt road. A road that, as far as you can tell, sees a fair amount of traffic between Fort Ohm and Uncanny Valley. However, you can also tell it is still a relatively new trail given the condition of the grooves from wagon wheels.

After about 8 hours of travel or so, the sun is beginning to set.

The current time is approximately 7:00 PM.
OOC:
What would you all like to do for the evening?
Feb 11, 2020 1:13 pm
"Well all, we going to set up camp ? The light has faded and our horses sure do look like they could use a rest."
Feb 11, 2020 3:04 pm
John dismounts, helps the ladies down from their horses (if they accept his help), then goes about setting up the camp.
Feb 11, 2020 4:14 pm
"Thank you John." Vivian dismounts and looks for a place to tie her horse and then does some stretching.
Feb 11, 2020 4:31 pm
Collie looks at her horse when Vivian suggests to make camp and seemingly notices for the first time that it looks exhausted. "Alright then, let's take a break. No other choice until someone finally invents a robot horse that doesn't need sleep", she says.
When John offers his hand, she accepts it and dismounts with his help. Once the horses are tied up, she helps with setting up camp.
Feb 11, 2020 5:15 pm
OOC:
You all should be able to set up a camp, especially helping each other, with little to no trouble.

How will you all be sleeping? Bedrolls, tents, etc? Is there a campfire?

Also - you would need to consume your daily ration of water and a trail ration OR make arrangements to provide for yourself otherwise.
Feb 11, 2020 7:11 pm
A nice bedroll under the stars.
Feb 11, 2020 8:28 pm
Bedroll and trail rations for John.
Feb 11, 2020 8:43 pm
"We ought t' consider takin' watch in shif's after th' sun sets. Maybe' two hours each? I c'n take firs' one if you want."
OOC:
How much time before sundown, and can Monte make a Survival roll to try and find/catch something to eat before tapping into his rations?
Feb 11, 2020 8:52 pm
"I need my beauty sleep", Collie says as she puts down and sets up her bedroll. "But feel free to wake me up for the last watch. I'll take that one."
Feb 12, 2020 12:46 am
funfungiguy says:

OOC:
I'd say it is about 1 hour before full night sets in...just as everyone is setting up camp... Up to you! :) Given the lighting conditions...it may or may not call for a minor modifier, but just let me know what Monte would like to do and we will work it out.
Feb 12, 2020 10:19 am
"I'll take the second shift, Monte. Much obliged for you to take the first." Doc unrolls his bedroll and sets his lantern up, pulling a pad out to jot down a quick journal entry on his first day in the field as a Tesla Ranger.

They've put me with an interesting set of folks. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised considering they've let me into the corps itself. Orientation was brief by necessity, a cursory test that we could pull a trigger was all there was time for before circumstance demanded that we step up to the plate. Our first day on the trail was quiet. Our horses are resilient and we've enough experienced hands at the frontier that I feel we'll have warning of any danger before it's immediately upon us. Now, I lay my head down to sleep, hopeful that I can catch a few winks before my shift at keeping watch.
Feb 12, 2020 11:18 am
"Guess, I'll take third watch then wake up Collie for the last one."
Feb 12, 2020 12:09 pm
OOC:
Unless anyone wants to provide detail about the camp, I'd say that you all are set up around 75 to 100 feet off the main path in an open flat space... a few trees around, but mostly open so you can keep a good watch.
Feb 12, 2020 12:17 pm
OOC:
Sounds good to me
Feb 12, 2020 1:53 pm
OOC:
That works.
John will take the last watch.
Feb 12, 2020 2:03 pm
"Guess I'll get a full nights sleep then", Collie remarks with a smirk when John offers to take last watch. "Thanks, Johnny, you're a real gentleman"
Feb 12, 2020 10:23 pm
OOC:
Sorry everyone I feel like I've been in and out, I'll start putting more time into contributing here. I'll do bedroll and rations as well then.
Roland has remained quietly distracted in his own thoughts of the journey ahead and the path behind. "Guess I can count myself lucky as well then. If anyone needs their rest tag me in." He finishes setting up his necessary sleeping arrangements.
Feb 13, 2020 5:16 pm
9:00 PM
OOC:
We will say that Monte's watch is from approximately 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM if he decides to do 2 hours.
The night settles in...as Monte takes watch his companions settle in for some rest from the long day they just had. Perhaps he reflects on how the early morning started up until now. From the initiation process first thing in the morning to the impromptu mission thrown in your lap...oh...how the day has progressed. Here now, on your first official Tesla Ranger assignment. Maybe this will earn you a badge and give you a chance to fight and reclaim the life you desire?

The night rolls onward...
OOC:
If you will, please give me a Notice check.
Feb 14, 2020 6:32 am
Monte used his last hour of daylight to try and scrounge up some food before his watch began. He then sat for his two hours of watch.
OOC:
I'm making a SURVIVAL roll (I'll let you decide if he gets a +2 to his rolls for his Woodsman Edge. Then I'm making a NOTICE roll for while on watch.
OOC:
Oh Gee Dee!!! It should be noted as well that Monte was cursed with a bonehead for a player controlling him, who evidently made a boneheaded mistake and forgot to buy rations for him. So Monte appears to be traveling without food for the next few days unless he manages to scrounge some up for himself or shoot his horse.

During the last hour or so of daylight Monte searches around the surrounding campsite area only to come up short-handed for both food and water. Perhaps the immediate area is a bit too arid and with the looming darkness, it is making it increasingly difficult to find signs of sustenance.

As his companions settle in, Monte begins his watch. Nearing the end of his watch, he thinks he sees a small red light in the distance...off in a westwardly direction from the campsite. However, as soon as he notices this suspicious light, it vanishes.
OOC:
It is now nearing the end of Monte's two-hour watch.
Feb 14, 2020 5:26 pm
Monte wakes to Doc for second watch, being sure to inform the doctor of the red light, pointing in the direction he thought he saw it coming from. He then unfolds his blanket and settles down, not quite closing his eyes yet. Hating robots as he does, and feeling uneasy now about the light he thinks he saw, he says to the Doc, "Maybe we outta be consid'rin' four-hour watches. I c'n help keep watch for 'nother two hours wi' you. Then you c'n' wake her", nodding at Vivian's sleeping form, "and I'll try an' git a couple hours shut-eye aft'r that".
Feb 14, 2020 6:26 pm
OOC:
I can spare some rations if need be.
Feb 14, 2020 7:12 pm
Doc is turning fitfully when Monte wakes him up. He sits up and rubs his eyes. His brows knit as Monte tells him about the light. "Doesn't sound like anything good. You're probably right. Four eyes are better than two. I appreciate the suggestion and the company." He gets up and dons his coat. "This stuff must be old hat to a trapper like you, huh?" Doc stares out into the darkness, vigilant for the appearance of anything unusual.
Feb 14, 2020 10:12 pm
Indeed the temperature has dropped a bit and it is settling into a chilly night as Doc and Monte sit-up with the continued watch.
OOC:
Any campfire going or anything of the sort?
Feb 15, 2020 9:11 am
OOC:
Oof, while I wish not, I bet so. Would seem normal to keep warm and wild animals away unless somebody had the forethought to worry about enemies who were enticed by fire, which I don't think Doc would do.
Feb 15, 2020 9:51 am
OOC:
Collie would have probably been in favor of a campfire
Feb 15, 2020 6:11 pm
Nobody really specified one way or another, but it would seem logical that we would have made one.
Feb 15, 2020 8:41 pm
OOC:
A campfire definitely gets John's vote.
Feb 15, 2020 9:44 pm
Warmth would be nice and light to see by
Feb 16, 2020 7:03 pm
OOC:
Ok, so we will say there is a campfire. :)
As the next two hours press on, the night cools on down a bit more. The sky does begin to clear a bit and the stars and moon come out to illuminate the surrounding area ever so slightly.
OOC:
Please RP as you'd like and give me a Notice check for these next two hours.
Feb 17, 2020 9:12 pm
A_True_Believer says:
OOC:
Please RP as you'd like and give me a Notice check for these next two hours.
OOC:
Am I correct in assuming that the only ones making noticing and RPing is Monte and Doc, who are on watch?
As a mountain man of few words, Monte stays relatively silent, keeping his eyes on the distance, wary of any movement or more red lights like he thought he saw earlier. While he'd prefer the rest of the night pass without incident, he feels a bit apprehensive that nothing further has happened, wondering if the doc thinks him a liar or a "nervous nelly".

Rolls

Monte Colter NOTICE - (1d6, 1d6, RA)

1d6 : (1) = 1

1d6 : (62) = 8

Feb 17, 2020 11:12 pm
OOC:
You got it. :) Just those awake at the moment.
OOC:
With a roll of 8, Monte notices something.
About 30 yards outside of camp, and to the southwest, Monte can just make out that there is an animal or two heading in the general direction of the camp. From the sound of it and the outline, it appears to be a few coyotes or wolves. They seem to be heading in your general direction, albeit at a casual pace at the moment.
OOC:
A Common Knowledge roll concerning animals, and/or the impact the war has had on wildlife out west can be made for a bit more insight.
Feb 18, 2020 11:02 am
Doc sits up with Monte, happy for the company on what would have been his first night up and alone west of the Mississippi. He stares out into the night, busy with subtle sounds of nocturnal animals, and hugs his knees close.

"I can see why you want to come back out here." Doc says quietly to Monte, trying to be careful not to wake the others. "Not really anything like it back out east."

Rolls

Wild dice - (1d6, RA)

Feb 18, 2020 12:46 pm
OOC:
With a roll of 2, Doc doesn't really notice anything.
The small fire continues to provide a reprieve from the darkness and a bit of warmth from the cool night.

While listening to Doc's soft conversation, Monte would notice that the coyotes...or wolves...are slowing and looking up at their camp. Monte is fairly certain that they are aware of them. Whether or not this poses a problem is not entirely clear.
Feb 18, 2020 3:14 pm
OOC:
Concerning information on the animals approaching, would Survival work as well, or only common knowledge?
Feb 19, 2020 1:48 am
OOC:
I think Survival relates more to finding shelter, food, water, etc vs. Animal knowledge, etc. So, probably a Common Knowledge roll would work better instead of Survival.
Feb 20, 2020 4:26 pm
The animals come into view a little more and they pause, giving notice to the campsite. However, they veer off...perhaps it is the fire.

The night proceeds...a few hours pass and we are well into the night.
OOC:
It's time for the next watch if you all choose or we may proceed through the night and/or morning.
Feb 20, 2020 5:13 pm
"You oughta get some shut-eye, Monte. I'll stay up with the next shift." He stands up to go wake Vivian.

"Hey, you're up. Monte spotted somethin' so we're overlapping shifts. Get yourself some coffee. Pots already hangin'." He says, rustling her from sleep.
Feb 20, 2020 9:03 pm
Monte ponders the animals before turning in for bed.

Rolls

Monte Colter COMMON KNOWLEDGE - (1d4, 1d6, RA)

1d4 : (3) = 3

1d6 : (5) = 5

Feb 21, 2020 12:18 pm
As Monte lays down for the remainder of the evening he notices the animals turn and move towards the southeast. Given his experience in the wild, he is fairly certain the campsite and presence of the group as a whole detoured them away.

The night looms a bit more towards morning...
OOC:
Doc and Vivian are up, perhaps near the embers of the fire still providing a bit of warmth and soft light?
Feb 21, 2020 12:23 pm
Vivian stretches out catlike and looks around, "My turn eh ?"

Rubbing her eyes she goes into her bags and brushes her teeth and washes up. Applying a bit of make up and then begins her watch.

Rolls

Notice D6, Wild Die D6 - (1d6, 1d6, RA)

1d6 : (1) = 1

1d6 : (3) = 3

Feb 22, 2020 11:52 pm
As Vivian joins Doc the morning grows closer and closer. The night is dead, the sky has cleared...the fire is down a bit to warm glowing embers, providing enough warmth for both the would-be rangers and the coffee hanging in the pot.
OOC:
With a roll of 3, Vivian doesn't notice anything suspicious going on around the immediate area.
Feb 23, 2020 4:01 pm
Continues to watch till morning.
Feb 23, 2020 7:16 pm
The night moves along, mostly uneventful with the exception of the clearing sky and dropping temperatures. However, not below freezing. The embers of the fire have died down as the last of the group's appointed "watch" snuff out the remaining fire as down emerges over the horizon.

The sun emerges...the group begins to stir.
OOC:
We will pick this up in the new thread "Milk Run" - Day 2, but feel free to elaborate on anything that happened the last few hours of the night.

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
