Operation "Milk Run" - Day 2

Feb 23, 2020 7:21 pm
6:30 AM

The morning has arrived. The group is stirring about the campsite.

Most of you might notice Oliver, who is purring and rubbing up against a few of you as the little tabby cat stretches. It would seem that Roland's small companion stays near its master.

The day ahead provides some options...you might recall the mention of a shortcut through old Diablo Canyon...or you all might decide to press on down the main trail to Uncanny Valley. The day, however, seems promising. The day is clear and the temperature promises to be pleasant as the sun rises.
OOC:
With a common knowledge (or appropriate skill) check you would know about how far the shortcut trail should be from your current location.

When Collie is woken up, she stretches in her bedroll before climbing out of it. "Haven't slept that well in a long time. Must be 'cause of all the strong men watching over me", she comments as she starts to get ready. She slept in most of her clothes, only taking off the armored parts she took from the armory and her leg brace. "We were planning to go through this canyon, right?", she asks as she reattaches the walking aid while looking out back towards where they came from. "But I'm pretty sure we must have passed it yesterday."
OOC:
Collie has no idea where the canyon could be...

Monte wakes up from his sleep and starts packing, his stomach empty and grumbling. Hearing Collie's inquiry Monte thinks about it.

Answering her question (
OOC:
Monte will give her the correct answer as the GM sees fit
), Monte walks away from the group, heading in the direction he thinks he saw the red lights at in the night lloking to see if he can find any tracks in the dirt or signs of their presence (
OOC:
Please add +2 if you think Woodsman Edge applies to this terrain

Sure, with a roll of 8 Monte certainly corrects Collie's misdirection. Furthermore, Monte is certain the red light was in the direction that the current trail leads to and that you all should reach the supposed old abandoned Diablo Canyon trail about midday today if you leave promptly around...say 8:00 AM.
Feb 24, 2020 7:49 am
Collie raises and eyebrow at Monte when he tries to correct her. "Excuse me?", she says. "I'm pretty sure that's the way."
She looks at the others to back her up.

"Hello coffee my old friend." Vivian doesn't get involved in the direction scheme simply getting ready, taking care of her horse. Brushing her mount and checking her hooves.

When ready she mounts up.
Feb 24, 2020 4:10 pm
"Mmm... No, miss," Monte replies to Collie with a deadpan response. "You notice them prints on th' groun' headin' in the d'rection you're pointin' an' you'll see we followin' a bunch'a horses that got them shoes put on backwards. That or them's our horses prints..."
OOC:
Couple of questions:
1. Monte didn't notice any prints on the ground where the red light was?

2. Can monte make a Survival Test to try and drum up some food while on the back of his horse today, assuming nothing else divide's his attention?
Feb 24, 2020 4:27 pm
"Yeah, 'cause we must have passed the entrance to the canyon yesterday, genius!", she replies, getting annoyed by Monte's obvious ignorance and his implication that she's being dumb. She starts packing up her belongings so they can get on the road again.

OOC:
I'd say with that roll of 8, Monte did investigate a bit and find some curious tracks leading off in his presumed direction of the hidden shortcut trail. Furthering his certainty of it. Sure, Monte could give a Survival check to the surrounding area that would take, say about an hour as they're packing up camp. We say you all stirred awake and got to moving around about 6:30 AM.
Feb 24, 2020 5:54 pm
John awakens with a start to see that it is dawn. "You didn't wake me for my watch," he says somewhat accusingly to Vivian. Then his expression softens. "Thank you. Guess that I shouldn't complain about extra sleep. I owe you a watch, though."
Feb 24, 2020 6:10 pm
Doc is lashing his crates to his horse when he hears Monte and Collie getting into it.

"I wouldn't go fightin' with Monte when it comes to navigatin' out here, Collie. This is his laboratory, after all. It'd be like him telling you how many ohms to use in your resistor circuit." He chinches the lash and faces the two of them.

"I say we listen to Monte and try and catch that canyon."
Feb 24, 2020 6:51 pm
Roland awakens after a full night of rest. "GOOOOOOOD MORNIN" he says to no one in particular. Another day, another dollar." He shakes away the morning fatigue and looks around for Oliver. "There you are lil buddy." He starts to pet Oliver as he finishes saddling up. "Seems these folks are having a lil spat on which way to get going. Haha thought it'd be easy enough to figure out. What you think buddy should we take sides?" Oliver jumps out of Rolands hands and scurries quickly over to Monte's side. Clearly having chosen. Roland joins the fray a moment later. "Far be it from me to disagree with the cat. Hahaha! I think Monte's got the upper hand here but hey when it comes to navigating those metal heads I'm with you all the way Collie." Roland picks up Oliver and puts him back in his overcoat pocket.
Feb 24, 2020 7:03 pm
Collie frowns, still convinced Monte is wrong. "Fine, we'll try your way then", she says. "But don't come complaining to me when we waste a day of travel because you can't navigate properly."
With an annoyed expression, she - clumsily because of her injured leg - climbs onto her horse. She's not in a mood to talk anymore and just wants to get going.
Feb 25, 2020 8:18 pm
Monte sees Collie climb on her mount. "Maybe you c'n turn 'round and sit backwards on your horse an' you'll be feelin" better 'bout the direction you think you're headed."

"Also," he says to everyone, "I thought I seen some red color'd lights while on my watch las' night, was why we was takin' to doubling up. I walked over there to where I think I seen 'em and there's some curious lookin' tracks headed in the direction we're goin'. So I think we should all be on our guard fer the day. Collie, since you're so intent on lookin' th' direction we already come from, I think you'll do a pretty fine job o' watchin' our backs. With his matter of fact way of speaking, it's unclear if he's pulling her leg or serious.

Having little to pack up before the trip, Monte will try another stab at scrounging up some breakfast.
OOC:
Holy jeez! That's a success with three raises on my wild die for drumming up some food.

"Keep an eye on them tracks, Monte. Be good to know if they break off from the direction we're headin'! Let's get ta gettin'!" Doc mounts his horse, ready to leave.
Feb 26, 2020 2:54 am
During Monte's scurrying around for food, he finds a fresh small stream of clearly fresh and drinkable water nearby...possibly connecting to the nearby Mississippi River. He also finds loaded Blueberry bushes and loaded plum trees with indigenous wild plums. The amount of food he found is quite substantial and would supply three people enough to much on for at least 3 days.

As Monte loads up his bounty of food and water the morning is in full light. It's close to approximately 8:00 AM.
OOC:
I'm assuming Monte and a few of you would be able to tell the approximate time given your survival training and just being in that time period. What all would you like to do? Set out? Hold up? If you all would like to set on out just give me the go-ahead and I'll push us forward in the day to about the moment you all would be looking for that shortcut.

Our brave, would-be Tesla Rangers head out on the second day about 8:00 AM. Having packed up, fed, and hydrated they move onward toward Uncanny Valley. However, the group has made a decision to seek the mentioned shortcut through Diablo Canyon.

As the day moves forward the trail - such as it is - begins to wind between steepening hills. Around midday, the rangers cross an overgrown rail line pointing due west, rusted and forgotten. It's at this point that Monte is certain the path is here and follows the old rusted rail line westward into the canyon.

Your characters would generally know to avoid abandoned trails and paths due to great chances of danger and the like.
OOC:
The party has a choice to make here. Follow the rail line into the canyon shortcut or continue on the path north and around the top of the canyon, then back south.
Feb 27, 2020 7:32 am
Collie stays in the back, watching the group's rear like she was told while occasionally muttering something about how this is all a "waste of time" and how Monte is an "arrogant prick".
When they actually find the entrance to the canyon, her muttering stops immediately. Finally figuring out that Monte had been right all along, she slows down her horse some more to gain a bit more distance from the others. Embarrassed by her insistence on the wrong way, she stays quiet and just hopes everyone will eventually forget about it.
Feb 27, 2020 2:32 pm
"Oh Monte was right." said almost to herself as she looked ahead.

She had her horse canter up ahead closer to the front of the group, "Good, getting there faster is good news."
Feb 27, 2020 4:37 pm
When the group inspects the trail and notes its disrepair, "What do you make of it, Monte? Anybody been that way lately we need to worry 'bout?" He takes his too-clean hat off and wipes his brow, looking down the way the canyon is supposed to be as though he knows anything about reading the wilds, even though he doesn't.
Feb 27, 2020 8:40 pm
Monte will examine the trail looking for signs of life,or in the case of robots, recent activity at least.

Monte Colter SURVIVAL - (1d8, 1d6, RA)

Feb 28, 2020 1:35 am
Monte examines the old rail line and inspects the surrounding area. He would probably feel good about taking the shortcut and doesn't see anything to alert him to any suspicious robot activity. The trail indeed looks abanded to Monte, but he is confident that the group could keep near the rail line and find their way.
Feb 28, 2020 2:58 pm
Monte repeats these observations to the group but leaves it up to them to make a decision on which way to go.
Feb 28, 2020 4:15 pm
Collie stays quiet in the back and doesn't speak up, even though she definitely prefers to go through the canyon.
Feb 28, 2020 6:13 pm
"Let's hit it then, eh? No need to change the plan, yet. Let's save the improvising for when the robots show up!" Doc laughs and pushes his horse toward the canyon, pausing to see if the others will follow.
Feb 28, 2020 10:58 pm
"Yeah let's get this show on the road. If either road takes us there, may as well take the shorter. Ain't no rustbucket robot gonna get in our way anyways about it anyhow. And iffin they do! Ol' Oliver here will show them the one-two! Ain't that right buddy!" Oliver peeks it's head out and hops onto the ground running forward and gives a defiant 'meow-growl' as if understanding his newly appointed role as protector.

"HAHAHA you get back here you ole' ball of lint I was just kidding." Roland spurs his horse forward a moment giving a light hearted chase to the tabby cat companion while the others continue convening on their decision.

After a few moments of playful chasing, Oliver eventually runs over to Monte's side again. "Well ain't that something! he seems to have taken a shining to you woodsman. Fancy that." He gives a grin. "Careful, he's been known to melt a hard heart."
Feb 29, 2020 3:46 am
John watches the cat at play, remembering his own kitten that he had as a boy. His father had forbidden him to have the cat, but he took care of it behind the barn every day, feeding it milk and the occasional bit of meat that he managed to sneak away from the table. It was a loosely-kept secret that his mother figured out early on. She said nothing to his father, who would have been furious at being disobeyed, but she helped John sneak bits of food to the cat. It grew into a fine mouser, and lived to the ripe old age of 13. By that time, John's father had been killed in action and John himself was a strapping young man, looking to avenge his father's untimely death.

"Im surprised that the cogs didn't make use of the rails ? You would have thought they would use the material."
Mar 2, 2020 1:58 am
The party proceeds down the rail line, following the trail in old Diablo Canyon. The day has been pleasant, and only a few clouds have rolled in to provide some moments of shade. The rail is a bit overgrown and the horses are having to tread carefully, watching their footing, but nothing too cumbersome aside from some overgrown shrubs and such.

Up ahead, about 200 yards or so, you can make out what looks like a bridge.
OOC:
The rail clearly leads to the bridge. What are you all doing at this point and/or up-to this point? You're about 1 hour towards the canyon, down the abandoned trail at this point.

Collie is still trailing behind, letting the others inspect the bridge while hoping they'll continue to forget about her.
Mar 3, 2020 11:41 pm
You all come to the edge of the bridge. Vivian dismounts her horse, is joined by Doc as they head to inspect the bridge and look for a possible ambush, while Monte takes scans around the surrounding hills and cliff edges. John stays mounted and attempts to peer across the bridge to the other side to see if something lies in wait. Collie trails behind the group. There is a slight breeze coming from the northwest.
OOC:
Monte takes a good look at the surrounding area trying to find if anyone can gain the "drop" on them. What he finds instead, are indeed some curious tracks that seem fairly recent...robot tracks of some sort for certain! About the time Monte notices that John peers directly across the bridge and notices some shrubbery on the other side of the canyon, but sees no movement. Simultaneously, Vivian and Doc are checking out the bridge...it looks sturdy enough and not damaged...just more-so abandoned, however, as they peer under the bridge to check for signs of an ambush they indeed take notice of "Prairie Spider" robot lying in wait to get the drop on them!
OOC:
The prairie spider bot' that Vivian and Doc notice is about halfway down the bridge, 150 yards or so... Given the distance that Doc and Vivian notice the bot, I will forgo a dealing of the initiative for the moment. Where is everyone at in relation to each other?

I say Collie and Doc have about one round of free action to do something before I deal initiative cards...Vivian and Doc definitely think the bot is coming at you all.
Mar 4, 2020 1:15 am
Doc runs back to his horse and undoes the quick release he'd developed to access his inventions. He slips them on in the balanced harness he'd developed and makes sure the charges are secured in place. "Suh... Spider bot!" He shouts as he runs back to his horse. "Get your guns, there's a bot down there waitin' for us!"
Mar 4, 2020 6:32 am
At the Doc's warning, Collie looks up.
"Now things are getting interesting", she announces with a grin as she climbs off her horse and takes out her gun. "Let's disassemble some machinery!"
OOC:
I assume dismounting and taking out my weapon fill up my free actions. If not, I'll use an action to aim at the spider bot as well after Doc points it out.
Mar 4, 2020 4:55 pm
Monte draws his rifle, and points out the robot tracks he found.
OOC:
Where are the robot tracks specifically? Are they on the ground directly around us?

I'd say by the time the rounds begin, both parties are about 100 yards from each other. The Prairie Spider Bot is about 300 ft down the tracks on the bridge.
Mar 8, 2020 3:05 am
Doc runs to the edge of the canyon, unholstering his dragoon pistol as he does. The harness and breastplate chafe when they're on together like this and he shifts uncomfortably, watching the spider bot carefully. He whistles, "Whew, that thing is faar."
OOC:
My furthest range increment for my longest range weapon is 48 yards so it'll be a while yet. I don't know if there is a ready action mechanic in SW or not, but if there is, I want to fire my dragoon pistol as soon as it hits my furthest range increment.

just fyi dragoon pistols have max range band (at - 4 penalty) at 48 yards. So unless you're running 50 yards toward the bot you couldn't hit it with a pistol with an infinite number of exploding dice. Rifles may have the range tho.
