aquafina Character Discussions

Feb 29, 2020 11:22 pm
This thread is for discussing aquafina's character please do not post anything here that is not related to aquafina's character and yes collaborating with aquafina is consider fair postings.

Please make all rolls in here and outline what you are are doing so that I can give you feedback on the world. Do note though this game borrows heavily from the Forgotten Realms so you can use information from that setting to outline your background.

I do have a character already thought of that is a monk whose bloodline has been hunted for generations by a cult of a god his ancestor helped lock away. Afterwards, everyone involved was cursed, so his family went into hiding and spread out across the world. His parents dropped him off as a baby at the monastery to hopefully hide him. His parents and siblings secretly visited time to time so he knows who they are. But eventually his location is found and the monastery was attacked, and now he is travelling trying to reconnect with his family and destroy this cult so his family doesn't have to be in hiding anymore. I have more info but that is the gst of it

I am of course open to changes and anything so just let me know if you ave any thoughts or concerns

Note while Far Reach would be an excellent place to go and hide it would be a horrible place to be working to eliminate some cult that is hunting your family down.

However the basic concept for this character would work -- perhaps instead of hunting down the cult while at the monastery an oracle had a vision that at Far Reach your character could find a specific something that could facilitate protecting your family from this cultist organization that you know next to nothing about other than they want you presumably dead.

This is for the attributes, I am not sure if this will work or not as my last post did not go through correctly I dont think

Rolls

Attributes (1) - (3d6)

(352) = 10

Attributes (2) - (3d6)

(165) = 12

Attributes (3) - (3d6)

(232) = 7

Attributes (4) - (3d6)

(333) = 9

Attributes (5) - (3d6)

(654) = 15

Attributes (6) - (3d6)

(434) = 11

Nov 10, 2020 7:05 pm
So if i add 6 and remove the lowest roll from each (i think im doing this correctly (?)):
(1) = 6 + 3 + 5 = 14
(2) = 6 + 6 + 5 = 17
(3) = 6 + 2 + 3 = 11
(4) = 6 + 3 + 3 = 12
(5) = 6 + 6 + 5 = 17
(6) = 6 + 3 + 4 = 13
Nov 10, 2020 7:10 pm
If i do:
Str 12
Dex 17
Con 14
Int 11
Wis 17
Cha 13

Then hitpoints would be for first level -> 1d8 + 2 = 10
Then

Rolls

Hit points level 2 and 3 - (2d4)

(11) = 2

Nov 10, 2020 7:11 pm
So first level = 10
2nd = 1 + 4 + 2 = 7
3rd = 1 + 4 + 2 = 7

So final would be 24 i believe
Nov 10, 2020 7:27 pm
I think i would rather do Str 13, Int 12, Cha 11

Okay I will have to relook at the Monk again to get a better idea for giving suggestions but rest assured I will make suggestions only if I feel something might benefit you more game-play wise but in the end it is your decision not mine -- and have you checked out the House Rules and such ?? If not I suggest perusing them as you might find items of interest in there.

I have looked through some of it. And I did have one question, as it says that we start with the normal starting equipment as well as 750 gp worth of stuff. Can we have magical items that aren’t consumable like bracers of defense? And then what is the price we’re going off of, because the dmg gives a range of prices depending on the rarity
Nov 11, 2020 3:40 pm
No to permanent magic items -- only consumables magic can be purchased at this stage as for those I will go through the DMG and and I will add a post to cover the consumable magic items available during character creation only along with their prices

Now there are other things that you can spend money on that are not magical -- for instance Masterwork items (armor and weapons) are not magical and it is Masterwork that gives the bonuses To Hit and Damage -- magic no longer does that as magic simply adds a magic bonus of some sort -- further there are other materials that armor/weapons can be made from that are not magical that change the basic stats of the item in question --- all of that is towards the bottom of the House Rules
Nov 12, 2020 2:32 pm
Ah ok, that clears some things up
Nov 12, 2020 2:52 pm
Can the masterwork and other qualities like adamantite properties stack? For spear, a +2 to both to hit and to damage rolls (cost x20, so at 1gp starting price is now 20gp), then adamantite so another +2 to hit and critical threat +1 (x25 to price, so now its at 500gp?). And does critical threat mean that it crits on a 19 or 20 now?

Yes Masterwork is a separate bonus from material bonus -- but note not only do the bonuses stack but so do the costs with I believe I stated materials costs are applied first prior to masterwork costs but I think with multiplication it makes little difference which one you actually apply first -- and while you can refine gear later on adding masterwork levels you cannot change its material content without completely starting over -- something I should probably put into the notes as I do not think I explained that part
Nov 12, 2020 6:29 pm
Ok awesome. An adamantite masterwork spear is looking 👌🏻 Even though it’s 500 gp 😅😅

I submitted a character sheet, let me know if there is anything i need to change!
Nov 12, 2020 10:50 pm
I noticed some changes were made to the character creation guidelines, should i do point buy instead? And are we starting at 3rd or 5th level
Nov 13, 2020 3:47 pm
Oh I made a copy/paste error my bad --- no I will fix that -- I have only one game that had different parameters and I forget that sometimes when updating things
Nov 13, 2020 4:40 pm
Ah ok, no problem!

A more complete character description and backstory for my character. Let me know if there’s anything I need to change/reconsider!

Oketharos Arroway is a human monk from the temple to Torm called the House of the Hand in the Vast. He was taught monk traditions and fighting techniques here. Oketharos was dropped off at this temple as a child by his parents in hopes of hiding him. His family has been hunted for generations by a mysterious cult. He knows one of his ancestors faught a great evil many years ago, and even though they succeeded, all those in their party were cursed, and marked for death by the followers of this evil entity. As such, Oketharos never reveals his full name, going by many aliases, the current one is Quincy Pompas. He is a master of faking accents in order to help disguise him. At the temple, one of his cleric overseers received a vision of an object that would help remove the curse/marking on his family’s bloodline. He did not get a description of the item, but rather a location, the Far Reach. That same night, the temple was attacked by cloaked figures, they were especially focused on Oketharos, and to save the other members of the temple, he fled and began heading towards Far Reach. But not before one of his favored martial teachers was cut down in front of him. Once he finds this object, he wishes to find the rest of his family and unmark them as well, but he knows not where his family resides as they are all in hiding too.

Oketharos is a human man of average height. He has light brown skin, deep brown eyes, and super short black hair. His arms and the left shoulder feature deep burn scars from the attack on the temple, but he keeps them wrapped up in white bandages to keep them hidden. He wears the usual monk baggy pants, boots, and vest in shades of brown and silver.

Oketharos is a kind and calm person. He is serene often even in the most harrowing situations. He harbors great empathy for those in peril, suffering, and in hiding. He believes that some things must remain secretive, so he does not pry for unnecessary information often. Everyone’s secrets are theirs to keep. Family and close friends are the most important thing to him, and he will risk himself to save those most close to him.

I noticed you gave your character Cartographer Tools but you did not purchase them -- the Monk class does not give your character a set of tools -- just the proficiency.
Dec 6, 2020 12:15 pm
Oh shoot you’re right. I forgot to ask if I could even have that proficiency cuz I saw in the house rules that non-spellcasters can’t read or write.
Dec 6, 2020 11:12 pm
You can take script (as one of your languages) for one of your languages -- thus you could speak 2 and read/write one of those -- but then cartography would be more about drawing a map accurately - you just would not put any text on it just imagery
Dec 7, 2020 12:39 am
Ah ok, thank you. I am figuring out my equipment now. I also just realized I did not have any of stuff I start with from my hermit background
Dec 7, 2020 1:24 am
I was adding that in but good that you caught it -- btw you can sell stuff you do not want for book price to get something you do want -- for instance you might want to ditch the hempen rope for a silk rope much lighter -- further trading torches for a lantern is more efficient weight wise as well

If you plan to carry a lot of heavy stuff with you you might want to get a mastiff and pack --or-- a mule and a pack -- those tools can be quite heavy ;)
Dec 7, 2020 2:45 am
I would love a puppy to carry my stuff around, Dogmeat if you get the reference, but whenever I get animals is D&D it never ends well and I don’t wanna be sad😂. I had a mule named Herbert in my very first campaign and I loved it so much and then I accidentally killed it when I got a nat 1 on a skill check, I don’t remember the context but it was the saddest thing ever lmao
Dec 7, 2020 7:43 am
well the Mastiff is more mobile than a Mule but does not carry as much but Animal Handling would be very useful if one were to have such a creature

Spending 1 hit die, now back up to full. 24/24 HP & 3/3 ki points
Last edited March 18, 2021 9:44 pm

Rolls

Hit die - (1d8+2)

(8) + 2 = 10

Mar 18, 2021 9:56 pm
Okay I will address that but rolling recover for Hit Points is the same as rolling for Hit Points for you that would be 1d4+6
Mar 18, 2021 10:03 pm
Ah ok.

Well i guess I only needed 5 hit points so no matter what I would’ve gotten back to full lol, but that’s good to know for the future
Last edited March 18, 2021 10:04 pm

Rolls

Hit die (actual) - (1d4+6)

(1) + 6 = 7

Mar 18, 2021 10:04 pm
you did not have to reroll -- you can keep the 10

Hey aquafina if I presented you with a slightly tweaked version of the Monk would you perhaps be willing to give it a go? Feel free to say no. I am asking only because I recently did a deep dive into the Monk to help another player play a character concept they were thinking about playing but would have had to multi-class to do it and most of the time I try to discourage multi-classing as I see it as work around for a proper fix and as work arounds go they are never quite what they should be.

So like I said I did a deep dive into the Monk and made the determination that it was a hodge-podge... luckily I think you chose the their original thought for the class rather than the make shift archetype they seemed to slide in as an after thought. Still while working through this I determined that there was a better way to handle this that would be more in line with some of the other classes and this bring UP to par with them actually. Again if you would just rather stick with what you have that is fine too.

Look forward to hearing from you on this.

I'd love to take a look at it!

Okay I will compose the basic Monk based on the changes I made to create the hybrid Monk and get your feedback.
