Chapter 2: Dunestriders

Mar 8, 2020 4:07 pm
Soro and the Swordsman are still ill from the swarm, but they'll never recover if they don't get food, shelter, and water. You'll find all of that at Golden Sky Oasis. Hopefully, they won't take a turn for the worse before you get there. The first two days of the journey go without a hitch. You manage your water, and don't tire yourselves unnecessarily.

But now it's time to blindfold Akh and the Swordsman. It's going to be tricky because up ahead is Alwadi al-Sab'atayn, a raging river flowing not with water, but stone, sand, and flame. And it lies in the bottom of a deep canyon. It's a treacherous trek down, across, and up the other side.

What do you do?
Mar 8, 2020 6:40 pm
Jana has 2 doses of antivenom left and would give them to the infected.
Mar 8, 2020 6:55 pm
This isn't venom, but something else. Antivenom will not help them. You know of insects that lay eggs in animals or even people so their larvae can grow fat within, to later burst out of their host to become adult vermin. You're unsure, but you suspect that is what is ailing these men. They are strong, but will need your people's healing waters to truly recover. If they can get past the Sab'atayn.
Mar 8, 2020 8:03 pm
Akh will cast his unseen servant and make him walk in front of him. By leaving a hand on his servant, he hopes to feel him going up or down, thus helping him visualize the ground in front of him. Also, since the servant dissapears if he receives any damage, it will also alert him of potential danger ahead...

Since Akh is being led by the unseen servant, Jana will lead the swordsman, while keeping an eye on Akh.

Don't worry my friends, we will get there in time to heal you.
Mar 8, 2020 8:33 pm
OOC:
Mark 1 XP, Akh.
Though Akh's first casting goes somewhat wrong, no harmful effect is readily apparent. He tries again, and successfully conjures the unseen servant. Helping each other down narrow switchback paths only Jana knows, you all make it safely down to the bottom. You now face the river of churning, burning stone. The druids normally just fly over this canyon.

How do you get across the river?
Mar 9, 2020 4:18 pm
Is there a ritual Akh would know of that could help create a temporary bridge or a story he has read about of someone crossing such a dangerous obstacle ?

Jana ponders if her myrmeleon shape would allow a rider, and if that would be safer than walking.
Mar 9, 2020 6:37 pm
Even the myrmeleon would be crushed and burned by these churning, grinding, flaming rocks! It's about 70 feet to the opposite bank.

Akh knows a story. Tell the story, Akh.

OOC:
Can I use my elf trait to find a way across?
Soro, will try and find an outcropping that extends over the river of molten stone.

I remember an old story, a ranger fleeing from a horde of monsters crossed two lava rivers to lose them, on the first one, he spotted floating stones on the river and by timing his steps, he managed to cross it without troubles. Some of the monsters were not that lucky and slipped in the flowing magma or stayed too long on the stones and sinked to their death. Sadly, there where still a few monsters that managed to follow him. At the second river, he whistled and his pet falcon appeared. He gave him the end of a rope that the falcon flew over the river and stuck it to a tree while he tied it on a rock on his side. Even if the heat was scorching his back while he crossed the magma, it was still better than dying by the hands of those monsters. Once on the other side, he waited for a few monsters to try to cross before cutting the rope, sending them to a fiery doom... Maybe we can try one of those two ways ?
Mar 11, 2020 12:27 am
Sweating from the heat of the molten river, the Swordsman croaks out "I don’t like my chances jumping from rock to rock if I’m blindfolded. If we have to keep it on, the rope bridge sounds like a better way."
Mar 11, 2020 3:18 am
I can fly over with a rope and set something up.

Jana has Akh tie a rope on high ground and then flies otbto the other side to form a rope bridge.

It's not a river of lava, guys. These are solid rocks ranging from grapefruit-sized to man-sized, like a rockslide on flat ground. Except the rocks are on fire.

There are no trees about, but let's say you find anchor points on each canyon wall to secure your rope stretched 8 feet above the rock flow.

What now? Not attempting to walk a tightrope, I hope? You'll need at least 2 ropes to make a "bridge."
Mar 11, 2020 12:48 pm
OOC:
How much rope do we have left?
Tie a rope around my waist in case I fall. barks the Swordsman.
OOC:
if there is another length of rope, the Swordsman will carry it across. Once across, he has Jana fly one end back. Then the next crosser can hold onto something smooth overhead and safety anchored. That way he can pull them across. Repeat for others.
Once he is secured, the Swordsman grabs ahold of the rope overhead and hand-over-hand muscles his way over the river of flaming stones.

Either way, it's going to be tough as hell blindfolded! This will be Roll+DEX, at -2 penalty if blindfolded. We can lower that penalty if you can come up with creative ways to mitigate the risk.

OOC:
I have never done any of this myself in real life, so bear with me. Again, I was thinking of the two-rope setup, and to some degree, the commando crawl method, where DEX would come into play for keeping one's balance.

With the tyrolean traverse I agree that grip strength would be more of a factor, but your roll would still result in a 6.

Mark 1 XP.
The blindfolded swordsman goes first, trusting his instincts as he pulls himself along the rope. The heat is intense, and he's continuously peppered with burning gravel as the rocks clash underneath him. Suddenly, he fumbles, and both hands and ankles find nothing but air! Only the safety harness saves him as he dangles underneath the makeshift bridge! Pulling himself up, he resets and keeps going. In time, he makes it to the other side. Singed and sore, but otherwise alright. Checking his gear, he finds that he has lost something to the river of burning stone...
OOC:
Lose item from your inventory, Swordsman. You choose.
Mar 11, 2020 4:49 pm
As the man with no name briefly fell, unbeknownst to him, his entire supply of rations fell out of the open top of his pack!

Once across he calls to little Jana over the grating rumble of the River of Burning Stones "Fly this end of rope back across for the next one to cross. I can help pull them along!"
Mar 11, 2020 5:21 pm
Jana grabs the rope and flies it back to the next person.
Mar 12, 2020 4:40 pm
While the swordsman was crossing Soro is busily tying Jei'nine to his chest similar to the harness he used for her in the tomb. I will go next so the Swordsman and I can pull Ahk across. With that he connects the harness to the first rope and makes a loop with the second so it can be pulled from either side of the burning rocks.

With Jei’nine squirming in the makeshift harness strapped across his chest, Soro has to keep his arms wrapped around her and trust the Swordsman's strength to haul them across. With everyone blindfolded, it's a tricky endeavor, to put it mildly. With all the blind twisting and pulling, Soro's own harness unravels and he just manages to grab the main traverse rope! But now the Swordsman's powerful pulling threatens to yank him right off! Warning yells are drowned out by the noise of the clashing rocks! It's all up to you, Jana! What do you do?
Mar 20, 2020 8:07 pm
Seeing what is happening from her vantage point flying above the situation, Jana lands beside the swordsman and lays a hand on his arm while speaking to him in a loud but calm voice.

Your strength is more than enough for the task, but care is needed as well. If you use your full force, our comrade will be shaken loose and dashed to the rocks.
Smooth even strokes on my marks.

A surge in the river - a wave of burning rock - barrels down the channel with a mighty roar. Working together, you pull Akh to safety with time to spare, but your rope bridge is lost. That may very well have been the last of your rope. Only a full inventory will tell.

After the crossing, you make your laborious way up the opposite canyon wall. You make it to the top just as the sun is setting.

Do you push on, or camp for the night?
OOC:
Soro, if you haven't yet, pick a piece of gear lost in the crossing. And make sure to track uses of Adventuring Gear.
Mar 22, 2020 3:33 pm
As they reach the top of the canyon to rest Soro readjusts his pack and realizes that his spears where not secured well enough for the crossing. Looking around he also realizes the small piece of rope that Jei'nine's harness was made out of is probably the only piece of rope he and his companions have left. I feel like we are ill equipped to spend another night out here, I believe it would be best to push on to the Oasis.
Mar 22, 2020 4:46 pm
OOC:
How long does Jana believe it will take?
Mar 22, 2020 5:07 pm
OOC:
If you spend the night here, it will take you all of tomorrow to navigate the final leg, for which even Soro will need to be blindfolded. There's precious little water left, only a few sips for those who need it. Travelling by day will be tough. Of course, travelling blindfolded is going to be dangerous, too.
Mar 22, 2020 8:19 pm
Water is getting low. I think that as dangerous as travelling by night may be, wasting time may be even worse.

If no one objects, I think we should press on.
Mar 22, 2020 9:25 pm
Well, travelling blindfolded by night or by day won't make a difference for us. Let's push on I say.
Mar 22, 2020 9:52 pm
Jana, you know that there are things that stalk these sands in the night. Things that only the dawn drives away. Or a roaring campfire. Ghosts that drive men mad. Only your tribe are immune to their whispering. On the other hand, Soro and the Swordsman have begun to grow feverish. You fear any delay getting them to the oasis could have dire consequences.
Mar 22, 2020 11:01 pm
"Whatever the little one decides." croaks the gruff voice of the Swordsman.
Mar 22, 2020 11:21 pm
Lets be on with it then. Soro pulls a scrap of cloth out of his pouch and ties it around his head as a makeshift blind fold.
Mar 24, 2020 3:19 am
OOC:
Point of order: I said that Soro needed to be blindfolded for this final leg of the journey, but Jana earlier established that Soro would only need to be blindfolded near the end of the journey, "Close enough to call for help, but not the final path through the traps."

My mistake. Soro is still able to see for now.
Darkness falls, and the world goes mad. Jana and Soro struggle to guide their friends through the swirling sandstorm that encircles and protects Golden Sky Oasis. And because the sun is hidden, the storm carries not just sand, but ghosts.

The calls of the ghosts of the desert explode in your heads: voices moaning, wailing, begging, tortured and screaming, babbling, cackling, insane chanting, whips cracking, cudgels slapping, screws turning, flesh rending, bones crunching, ravenous maws slavering, wind whipping, sand stinging, insects buzzing, worms crawling, bestial howling, talons scraping...

Only Jana is immune to the maddening cacophony. You want to plug your ears, but disoriented as most of you are, you'll no doubt end up wandering away if you let go of each others' pack straps.
OOC:
Everyone but Jana, roll+WIS. On a miss, you stop moving. On anything less than 10, describe the nightmare in your head. The worse you roll, the more horrible your nightmare.
Mar 24, 2020 11:45 am
The Swordsman... briefly feels the grip of terror as the voices of the ghosts swirl around him. Then he remembers: they are insubstantial, and cannot pierce his sturdy armor or cut his leathery flesh.

In the roaring of wind he laughs "Begone! You cannot hurt me!"

Soro, even though he has been through this before in his other visits to the Golden Oasis, is overcome by visions of his clan hold being overrun by vicious invaders. Killing and looting everything in sight, his friends and family torn apart and their bodies thrown into wells that his clan had watched over for generations. His mind can't handle the sheer maliciousness of the scene playing out in his mind.

He drops to his knees trying to cradle the phantom body of one of the clan children that took a sword cut across her neck. He can see her lifeblood pouring out of her as he tries to stanch the bleeding but is unable to hold her life inside her tiny body. Tears roll down his checks at the futile attempt to affect the horrendous scene.

Screaming into the night, Someone Help her! Someone help us!

Already used to speak with the dead, Akh wasn't disturbed at first, but another voice started creeping in, less than a whisper at first. Slowly he started to focus on it, intrigued. When it spoke there was a cracking sound, like the sound of a camp fire. The voice slowly overshadowed all the others, and it wasn't just a voice anymore, there was a presence. Nothing physical, but inside of him. It was that presence that protected him, whispering in a long forgotten language. The more he heard it, the more he felt like the surrounding temperature was rapidely rising. Trying to call out to his friends, Akh realized he coudn't move anymore, he could barely breathe anymore. Power... That voice!! He had heard it before !! But where ?... You asked me for Power and I gave you some of it... His skin had started blistering, his clothes and blindfold burned away, his drying eyes could not believe it, he was floating in emptiness... No not emptiness, there was something in front of him, a flame, hot, getting hotter, nearer... Now how about I make you taste it some more.... Something in the flame, eyes maybe, no but something was "looking" at him... ...Feel my power coursing in your veins !!!...
And then his blood started boiling, and he remembered... Amenemhet!! The God-Pharaoh !! Master of magic and fire !! His body burst into flames !! He felt power replace his blood even as his skin was melting. It was terrifying, his body could not endure it, his flesh was melting, his muscle dried up, his bones cracked under the heat. It was almost as if is entire being was about to burst !! He could feel himself yelling in pain with lungs that were not functional anymore... and then... darkness... No pain, no heat. Nothing... a whisper, ...grow strong, learn and you'll live...
Then Akh collapsed on the ground...

An eternity seems to pass with Soro and Akh helpless on the ground, Jana and the stalwart but blindfolded Swordsman trying to urge them on, while the storm of dust and souls rages around you. Finally, dawn breaks, and the ghosts melt away to torment you no longer. You trudge on through the swirling sand with only Jana to guide you until you break through to the other side. The danger is not over -- you must now navigate the final path through the traps.
OOC:
Everyone, take turns describing a deadly trap laid by the Dunestrider halflings to protect their home from outsiders, and how your group overcomes it (with Jana's help, but hampered by your blindfolds).

Jana, I'd love to see you reveal a little bit more about your Bond with Soro: "Soro has tasted my blood and I theirs. We are bound by it."
Apr 3, 2020 6:37 pm
The sun is rising and we are close to my home now. There will be further tests, but if you stay strong, safety will be yours.

Jana thinks back to her first time she met Soro...
The druids of her oasis and the water seekers of his village have been at peace for generations. Part of this peace entailed a young druid and a young water seeker would go on a quest together. She was paired with Soro. During their quest they stumbled into a nest of vipers. They managed to get away, but both sustained bites. The only way to survive was to suck the poison out. It kept them alive long enough to finish the quest and make it back to his village.
I know he is strong enough to get through this test and see my village for the first time.
Apr 3, 2020 6:44 pm
The party is lead along through a narrow defile between two towering sandstone cliffs by Jana. The path begins a steep incline until it reaches a wide gorge. The chasm is spanned by a network of rope bridges, made from cords woven from the fibers of tough desert plants.

The first span crosses from the edge of a thousand foot precipice across the void about three hundred feet to the top of a spire reaching up from the canyon floor.

Jana takes the party one at a time to cross the bridge, its wooden slats are spaced wide for a halfling, but are easy for the tall human to reach. As Jana clutches the Swordsman's hand, every few steps he whispers, "skip the next step... extra wide now"

The swordsman's blindfold allows the warrior to peek out only straight down at his feet. The heat of the day, and fatigue from the all night march catches up with the Man With No Name and makes him momentarily careless.

About midway across the span, he steps well short of skipping the next step as instructed and his foot lands on a board, which simply disappears! He falls into space letting go of Jana and reaching out to grasp the next board with one hand, his other hand flailing in the air.

After several heart beats he manages to swing his left arm up and grasp the board as his body twists in the wind. A second later his hand slips and he spins around. Pain shoots through his shoulder and his fingers begin to lose their strength ... he is about to fall when he emits a grunt and his left hand finds purchase on the rope frame.

Pulling with both arms, the Swordsman heaves himself up through sheer strength of will and a survivor's instinct to keep going.
His awkward clambering is made all the more difficult by the bouncing and swaying of the rope bridge and again the he nearly loses purchase, but is helped back onto the safety of the bridge with little Jana's help.

The terror receding as he stands up gripping both sides of the rope bridges spans with a white knuckled death grip he grunts his thanks and indicates with his chin he's ready to move on.

They make it across the span to a small wooden platform built out of the side of the spire.

wait here instructs Jana, to which the Swordsman replies It's not like I have someplace special to go.
Apr 6, 2020 1:27 pm
After the bridge crossing Jana leads the group through the wide mouth of a sandstone cave that opens quickly into a large spherical cavern. The walls and ceiling of the cavern are poked with tunnels leading off in every direction. The sound of scuttling can be hear coming from every direction. If the wrong path is taken an intruder will quickly find themselves in either a viper pit or a sand scorpion's nest. I will lead and each of you hold on to the persons foot in front of you. Jana explains to the others. You must crawl through, since you are larger, keep as close to the center as you can.

With instructions done Jana picks a nondescript tunnel that seems to lead back the way they had come but turns sharply as soon as the tunnel is out of sight of the main chamber. The tunnel is hot and dust from so much shuffling but the party trudges through and finally make their way our of an opening through the top of the tunnel that is hidden inside a ring of thornberry bushes.
Apr 8, 2020 4:29 pm
Once everybody is out of the tunnel, Jana asks that everyone waits for a few minutes. She goes a few paces away to take a few leaves of a rare plant growing here. Once back with the group she take a mortar and pestle hidden near the mouth of the tunnel and makes a paste with it, adding just enough water to it. After that she asks everybody to put some underneath their feets. When the group is done she makes them walk slowly, as if they where walking on brittle eggs. What the party does know is that the paste acts as a reppelant for the dangerous sand cactus. The Sand cacti are a form of plant that feeds on the life-blood of those that dwell near it. Sand cacti are well protected, for everything about the plant, except the needles, is hidden below the sand. The body can be from 5-8 feet across, 4 feet thick, and weigh up to 600 pounds. It has many barbed needles with long, thin strands connecting them to its bulbous body. The body and strands are a sickly white, while the needles are a sandy color, helping it stay camouflaged. And the paste Jana made them put under their feet somehow makes the needles shrink away from it....

OOC:
Great posts, everyone! Now we will see your home for the first time, Jana. Describe it for us.
Apr 8, 2020 6:57 pm
Jana is proud of her team for making it through the challenges. She is also hesitant. Strangers are not brought to the oasis often, it is a breach of the trust given to those who leave the oasis.

Wait here for a minute, I have to go and speak to the guards.

Jana walks to the small crack in the Cliff where, just out of sight, the halfling guards are stationed.

I have three Outsiders with me. They have come through all the trials while blindfolded. I ask for permission to pass with them. The need is great.

The main guard replies...Welcome home Jana. The need always seems great when you bring home strays.

This is the second time in all the years that I have been in this situation, but to them it may as well be 100.

One of them is a blood brother, the rest have risked their lives beside me. They would die if I had not brought them. I do not do this lightly, but I invoke Water Rights my companions.

At this the guards look surprised, but all arguments stop.

Bring your friends, I will advise the elders.

Jana goes back to her blindfolded charges and leads them to the break in the rocks. Once inside, she advises them to remove the blindfolds.

After about 100 feet through the path that winds between cliffs hundreds of feet high, you exit back into the sunlight. The sight takes your breath away.

There is a path leading about 500 feet down that ends at the side of the oasis proper. There are tents around the outside, you guess that there maybe 100 halflings living there.
But what really takes your breath away is the green. You expected palm trees and some water. You did not expect that they had used irrigation to grow fields of food and what looks like tobacco. All along the cliff are archers. If anyone ever found their way in to this haven, it would be near impossible to take.
Above all, there is a feeling of peace.
A party of halflings, led by what appears to be a group of elders approaches. The peace may be shortlived.
Apr 9, 2020 2:39 pm
The lead halfling looks ancient and frail, but possessed of inner strength that seems to draw from the land itself. Her wrinkled features radiate an aura of both quiet authority and motherly calm. This is the matriarch, Bethana.

"You seem to be making a troubling habit of bringing in strays, Jana." Despite her words, she motions for water and food brought to you, and for your wounds to be seen to.
Apr 9, 2020 6:09 pm
Thank you Grandmother. a term of respect, not of actual blood relation. These are not normal strays. I believe they have a fate ahead of them. One that may have an effect on all the desert.

Jana gives an account of everything that happened in their travels so far.

I felt it was imperative to get to the bottom of this.

Jana sighs and looks down.

But, as you know, I would not leave them to die in the sand whether or not I felt they were important.

Okay, I think we can call this End of Session. Congratulations!

After the matriarch left, Jana feels a pull towards the clifftop around the oasis. This was always a favourite spot for Jana. From up here she can see the whole oasis laid out before her. It always drove home the beauty and importance of her home.
This time it is a different feeling, it is more like a voice calling her. When she finally reaches the top, the voice she is hearing goes from internal to external. It is the screech of a hawk.
What is your name, and why are you calling me?

The hawk replied that her name is Khamseen and that the Lord of the Clouds told her that Jana would need her help.

Thank you, little sister, I am honoured by your help.

Jana and her new friend come back to the oasis, where Jana replaces her vial of oasis water.
Apr 13, 2020 7:25 pm
The Swordsman enjoys the respite from the harsh desert, but he is not at peace. The calm of the oasis plays at the warrior and he busies himself away from the halflings training with his his ancient blade. He seems to prefer the company of the weapon to that of honest folk. Single mindedly he practices drills with the Sword of Vengeance, honing his merciless strikes to near perfection.
Apr 14, 2020 4:01 pm
With the calmness surrounding them, while studying his spellbook, Akh manages to decipher yet another spell written in it. With this he will be able to create a telepathic bond with another, allowing them to communicate silently...
Apr 17, 2020 4:38 pm
During their stay Soro takes the time each day to talk with as many of the residents of the Oasis as possible to strengthen the bond of friendship between his clan and the dunestriders. One of the ways he's able to do this is under the pretense of archery practice. During one of these practices a venerable defender shows Soro an incredible use of loosing multiple arrows at the same time to hit different targets.
Apr 18, 2020 3:17 pm
If they are there for more than a night, Akh will ask the swordsman if he can take the time to study his sword and scabbard. Maybe there is an inscription or some runes that would hint at its potential or give more info on where it's from...
May 5, 2020 5:32 pm
The Swordsman eyes Akh's request with a little side-eyed glance. It is clear he does not wish to be separated from the sword or its scabbard for any length of time. How long? he asks.
