Session 1: A Simple Job

A flurry of arrows whiz past your heads. The hallway you had just come from is starting to fill with smoke. You're all in front of a metal door leading to the room containing what you're here to retrieve. There's no way to see into it, and it's locked.

Mouse- Which of your contacts told you about this job?

Rurgosh the Wise- Who is trying to kill you?

Reszket- What are you here to retrieve?

Azarx- How did Mouse and the others convince you to join them?

...What do you do?
Feb 16, 2016 12:02 pm
"Kruf!", Mouse curses in halfling as another arrow whizzes by, "If we get outta' this alive remind me to have some stern words with Gibbnar the Great. I knew I shoulda' taken my fathers age old advice. Never trust a wizard you meet in a bar."

As he approaches the metal door he slides in front of it and skillfully flips out his lock pick tools.

"All I have to say is this better be worth it", he mutters as he goes to work trying to pop open the lock.
OOC:
Gibbnar The Great or Gibbnar The "Great" is a drunken wizard I met in the tavern. Not my most reliable contact, but sometimes he can actually earn his moniker. Usually when he is sober.

Also doing a thief move that ended in partial success.

"Aye it better Mouse... or Gibbnar will have a new nick name... 'the Fingerless'." Rurgosh threatened, "Didn't expect guards to shoot inside, bows no less..." the dwarf added shaking his head and he hunkered down behind his shield. Oddly enough it was easy to get in from the secreted passage. Seeing a patrol and Mouse's quick thinking they'd ducked into a room to get out of sight, no one expected it to be the barracks for the guards. Rurgosh wasn't sure who was more surprised but they'd been running for a bit.

"Bit of flame to some pulled down tapestry and a little something that burn the eyes when on fire won't keep their aim off for long. We need in now... unless they're just prepping a defense for something that might come out." he yammered on gruffly, "What are we even here for again?" he added going into typical full curmudgeon dwarf mode.

Mouse- this is an especially tricky lock. If it has been anyone else, they wouldn't have been able to pick it. But you're a pro, you've got this! Thing is, you're short on time. You can either do a rush job, breaking the lock entirely, or take your time to do it right, leaving yourself vulnerable to possible attacks.

What do you do?
Feb 16, 2016 1:26 pm
"Arg, c'mon you piece of kraz", Mouse says through gritted teeth. He strains against the door which seems to be a bit stuck. He gives his picking tool one last pull to the side with a strain and hears the door unlock with a satisfying thunk. He looks back to the lock and realizes that tool is now bent at an odd angle and won't be leaving that lock anytime soon.

"It's open", he calls to the rest, "Better be quick though, this lock is busted."

"What does a drunken wizard want with a helm?" Reszket queries Mouse, although she doesn't really expect a response under the current circumstances. "And why this particular helm?" she continues her one sided conversation while attempting to avoid arrows, "It's not even magical!!!"

She ducks in behind Rurgosh, hoping to gain a little cover from the cleric's shield and roll her eyes "Would have been easier to pool our gold and buy the damned fool one from the the armory."

Hearing that Mouse has found success with the lock Reszket yells, "Let's move!" and heads for the door.

Going to have her make a Defy Danger move to duck arrows (and because I like rolling dice).

Mouse, you know that it's really old, and made from a metal known to have peculiar properties. You don't remember much else, except... didn't the wizard say something about "Once it is in your possession, do not under any circumstances do"... What was it again? As you are standing there wracking your brain, more shouts and running can be heard echoing in the distance.

Reszket, you are fast. As the arrows fly in your direction, you can either dodge out of the way (ensuring they hit another member of the party) or choose to stay where you are (roll 1d6+1 damage) and take +1 forward to return fire, providing cover for the group still standing in front of the open door.

What do you do?
Feb 17, 2016 5:59 am
Azarx stares silently down at Mouse as he works the lock. An arrow flies dangerously close to his head, but the elf just stands there, silently, not flinching a muscle. "..." He then nods at Mouse when he finally gets the door unjammed, "Great Timing". Whether Azarx was being sarcastic or serious is hard to make out.
OOC:
It was Reszket who convinced Azarx to join, after saving his life in a battle (hence the bond). Azarx agreed because Reszket also reminds him of the girl he left behind in the north. His longing to go back to whence he came is enormous. But how can, when I am banished.
Feb 17, 2016 11:49 am
Mouse is the first one to slip into the room. "I think he said it was really old and made out of something special. It's a little fuzzy. We were both drinkin' quite a bit", he says as he tries to get a good look around the new room.
OOC:
Attempting to discern realities on this room. With an 11 I get three questions, here they are:

• What should I be on the lookout for?
• What here is useful or valuable to me?
• What here is not what it appears to be?

Taking up rear-guard just outside of the door Reszket urges the others to get into the room before any of the incoming arrows find a target. As she turns to follow the others her luck runs out and the blade of an arrow tears into her thigh. Despite her injury years of experience kick in and with a single fluid motion her bow is in her left hand and an arrow is in flight. Without waiting to see what will come of her attack she hobbles through the door, closing it behind her.

"That was closer than it needed to be!"
OOC:
Res will fire back using her 'Called Shot' - aiming for one of the attackers' legs - using the +1 forward from above

The dwarf of the group weighs into the room with the rest, Mouse's talk of a mysterious helm with secrets does entice him, he remembers how the wee one talking him into this. "Oh the helm or your memory is fuzzy?" Rurgosh asked in all seriousness. He didn't mind such things personally if it was a fuzzy helm.
Feb 18, 2016 1:05 am
As Mouse scans the room he calls back over his shoulder to Rurgosh, "Yeah, the helmet is fuzzy, and pink, and it flies around on eagle's wings." he turns to give the dwarf a look but honestly can't tell if the sarcasm registers.

He lets out a sigh. No, as far as I can tell it's made out of regular helmet type stuff", he says, turning back to his scan of the room.
Feb 18, 2016 4:18 am
Azarx nods when Rurgosh mentions the fuzzy helmet. "Sounds familiar, perhaps it was made from the hide of one of the great hunting gerbils of the north." He does not say anything after that and quietly thinks to himself of the frozen north and his lover still there...
Feb 18, 2016 6:17 am
Mouse, you step into the room and the first thing you notice is that it is much larger than you expected it to be, and bright. Blindingly bright like the light of 2 suns, concentrated into one place.

The helm is in the center of the room. It looks like what a young foot soldier would wear just out of basic training. If you saw it in a pile of scraps you'd likely bypass it for something more worthy of your attention. But each moment, when you strain to get a glimpse of it past the light (which originates directly above the platform upon which the helm rests), you could swear that it's watching you. Like it's waiting for you to do something. Maybe it's just your imagination.

As you inspect the floor, you see minute traces of dust that follows a specific, winding path to the helm. The rest of the floor space is undisturbed. You quickly realize that there is some sort of pressure-release trap on the floor. Stepping in the wrong place will set it off.

You also find a key on the ground a few feet from the helm. It's small, made from a fine material and embedded with an opalescent gem.

You hear additional shouts of "Fire!" and the sound of scraping against stone floors. A thin trail of smoke has made its way into the room.

Resket, you hear an impact and a voice crying out, followed by a string of elvish curses. Whoever you hit, they're pissed.

What is everyone doing?
Feb 18, 2016 6:36 am
I call out to the others, "We gots a trap! Careful where you step. Stay by the door, I'm going to get the helmet."

Shielding my eyes from the bright light above I nimbly defy danger by trying to follow the winding path through the room. Trying to pick up the key along the way.
OOC:
Is the key along the clear path to the helmet? If so I want to scoop that up, if only for the gem it contains.

Reszket, you've barely finished speaking before you see two elven swordsman rush towards you from the direction you came. One has silvery hair in long braids while the other has a brown hair coif that seems to be styled similarly to the Baron himself.

Azarx- you've come across the brown-haired elven man before. How do you know him?

From the opposite side of the hall, the 3 archers (1 human male, 1 human female, and 1 halfling female), now out of arrows, have dropped their bows and pulled out short and long swords and are coming towards the door.

Reszket and Rurgosh- the doorway can just barely fit the 2 of you, but it's a tight squeeze. Are you attempting to block the way? Who's standing where?
OOC:
When you stand in defense of a person, item, or location under attack, roll+Con. On a 10+, hold 3. On a 7–9, hold 1. So long as you stand in defense, when you or the thing you defend is attacked you may spend hold, 1 for 1, to choose an option:
▶ Redirect an attack from the thing you defend to yourself
▶ Halve the attack’s effect or damage
▶ Open up the attacker to an ally giving that ally +1 forward against the attacker
▶ Deal damage to the attacker equal to your level
OOC:
Also, you typically roll Defy Danger when you're putting yourself in a dangerous situation such as stepping into melee with another character to make an attack, or dodging arrows in order to grab an item without getting hit. If you're not sure what to roll, describe your action in detail and I'll let you know which roll will work best for that action.

Well I was going to just wait for someone to walk in I didn't like and bust their kneecaps in... XD Too much? Guess I'm on the right if we're blocking the doorway? Good thing elves are slim since I'm a bit stout
"I spy three younglings this way!" Rurgosh barks, "Come girl, those kneecaps won't break themselves." he advises with a wicked smile forming on his face as he licks his lips. Spinning his hammer it danced in his hand spinning from the flat side to the curved spike.

Mouse, you are a dance star. The key is actually several feet away from the helm, but this isn't your first heist. Describe your epic feat of stamina and grace as you pluck the key from its spot on the floor and make your way in front of the helm.

Silver-hair gets into your face, Reszket. "Do you have any idea what you're doing?" Baron hair yells "Elidyr, are you lecturing them? Just throw 'em in, let the rats get 'em." Elidyr kicks you hard in the shin while Baron-hair shoves you backwards into the room. The remaining guards catch up, pointing their blades at Rurgosh and Azarx, intent on forcing them into the room with Mouse and the others.

What do you do?
Feb 25, 2016 9:19 am
Mouse, seeing a winding path clear through the trap has danced along it, at first not noticing the key. A near misstep caused him to almost face plant right on top of it, but he catches himself and nabs the key, pocketing it for later. As he completes his course he hears some commotion at the front of the room, but doesn't turn back to see it just yet. Instead he lifts the helmet from the pedestal and, not wanting to have to hang on to it, places it upon his head.

Hey, look at me, I'm a general, Mouse says as he stands at attention for a moment.
Feb 25, 2016 1:22 pm
Suddenly, the room goes dark. The floor begins to vibrate.

Mouse, you hear a whispering in the back of your mind. The voice of a young girl. Hello, little Mouse. Have you come to set me free? It's followed by a fit of giggles.

What do you do?
Feb 25, 2016 1:45 pm
"I...uh...would love to...but I'm a bit busy at the moment..., Mouse says out loud to himself, maybe a little too loudly given the commotion in the room.

I see that the room is starting to shake and realize I may not have time to get back to the door safetly so I back up to the pedestal the helmet was on and sprint towards the edge of the trap floor and leap as far as I can, Hoping to clear the pressure-plates, or at least roll out of the way of the dangers it contains.

Mouse, when you make a leap of faith while in the pitch dark towards the exit of a trapped room, roll + DEX. On a 10+, Choose 2. On a 7-9, Choose 1. On a miss, it's all going down:
*You don't drop the helm
*You don't set off the pressure trap
*You don't get turned around
*You don't bring attention to yourself

Rurgosh- You hit the human female hard, but not before she gets a good slash in herself. Take 1d8 damage. The other two attempt to jab at you with their weapons, when suddenly Reszket's blow lands true, dropping Elidyr hard onto the floor.

Reszket, You quickly regain your footing, pushing and hacking your way back to the front of the door. The remaining guards look around at each other nervously. It's clear that they don't want to hang around any longer than they absolutely have to.

Baron hair backs up a few feet and calls to his cohorts. "Samson, Hazel, Shaeni, handle this. I have other business to attend to." He then turns around and runs down the hallway from where he came.

Shaeni is still gaping when Reszket stabs her hard, and she falls to one knee clutching her wound. This infuriates Hazel, who stabs you for 1d8 (minus armor.) Samson steps in front of Shaeni, protecting her from further harm. "This won't end well for you, or any of us for that matter. I beg of you, leave now before it's too late!"

As this is taking place, Mouse runs and leaps, while Rurgosh throws his shield into the dark room. Several things happen at once.

Everyone standing by the door hears the loud scrape of the metal shield against the stone of the floor, followed by a loud cracking sound. Suddenly, the ground falls away and there, a few feet in front of the doorway, is a dark shadow where there once was a floor. The raised platform where the helm once was does not seem to be affected, but it's hard to tell for sure from where you're standing. The room is large and dark. You'll have to bring in a source of light if you want to investigate.

Mouse, you feel the air whoosh past you as you leap. Unfortunately, the helm flies off your head in the process, landing just a few feet from the platform you had been standing next to. When you hit the ground, you roll across across the floor. When you stop, it buckles and suddenly you're falling. You land hard in a pile of rocks. Take 1d6 damage (no armor.) Disoriented, you look around and in the distance, you see two red torches moving quickly towards you. Actually, come to think of it, they look a lot like eyes. There's a strange, shuffling sound in the distance. A little voice echoes in your head. You shouldn't have done that. Now how will you help me? You can't see the pout but you know it's there.

Azarx stairs hollowly at the scene unfolding before him, partially covering his face with his cloak. All emotion and heart evaporating from his eyes, it was him... Sy'win. The Elf slams his fist on the side of the wall. That elven man, Sy'win, was a close friend to Azarx family. Nature save me! I hope he did not see me.
OOC:
Alright, sorry about the mental lapse everyone. I hope I made a way to clear that up. I should be alive and kicking...

Mouse, with a heave and a throw, you watch as the grappling hook flies upwards, catching on something on the floor above. You yank hard, expecting to be able to climb out. Instead, you hear a loud scrape of metal and a SNAP. The broken rope falls back towards you while the grappling hook is nowhere to be seen. It is lost. The red eyes continue their approach. Now that it's a little closer and your eyes have adjusted slightly to the dark, you can see a vague outline of the creature. It almost resembles a rat. A very large rat.

Samson stands in defense of his comrades, eying Resket, sword drawn but making no move to attack. "Then leave! Now, before he comes back!" He nervously eyes the hallway that Sy'win disappeared down.

Rurgosh's warhammer glows a lovely shade of blue, illuminating the front of the room and casting dark shadows around the platform where the helm once rested. It's no longer there, and Mouse is nowhere to be found. The sound of scurrying and the scrape of metal can be heard, as well as the snap of a rope.

Azarx, while you're not sure whether Sy'win saw you or not, the timing of his departure fills you with dread. What is he planning? How was he involved with turning your family against you?

Ah, Reszket, so good of you to join...WHAT WAS THAT!?!, I shout as I try to sound cool about the situation. I quickly try to dive away from whatever unseen thing shifts around below me.

"What have I just landed on!?" Reszket yells out to Mouse. "And where are you?"

Do a little Discern Realities here to try and determine what Res is standing on.

With a sigh the Dwarf looked at Azarx, "Never a dull moment eh?" he grumbled before trying to get down himself via the wall using the pick of his warhammer to slow his descent down the side.

Rurgosh, you slide down the wall, the scraping sound echoing throughout the chamber. Your weight and the sheer hardness of the rock is more than your warhammer pick can handle. You can choose to remove the warhammer and leap down from where you are (take 1d4 damage), or choose to continue sliding down with the warhammer (you would then need to have a skilled blacksmith fix the pick at some point.)

Reszket, you realize quickly that you have landed on some kind of rat's nest. It is huge. As you take a moment to explore and feel around it, your foot nearly goes through one section. You catch yourself, and as you take a closer look you realize that it's some kind of... doorway? Portal? When you stick your head into it, what do you see on the other side?

Both of you hear a yell, and then suddenly it's quiet. You realize with horror that Mouse has just vanished.

What do you do?

Rurgosh jumps off the wall on the way down landing and rolling to a shoulder before standing and sweeping his light around. He shakes his head a bit to clear the fogginess from the landing since it took a bit out of him.

Rurgosh grumbles going over to the last place he thought the little one was and looks around.

"Mouse? Are you down there?" Reszket whispers loudly as she peers into the darkness. She's not sure, but once her eyes start to adjust to the lack of light it appears that this is an entrance to some sort of long forgotten tomb. "Cica!" she call to her feline companion "take a look ahead if you would and then return to me."

Rurgosh, you see no sign of Mouse. However, curiously, you sense something. The vestiges of immense power sear the very air around you. Someone or something was here, and now it is not. Perhaps it took Mouse with it?

Reszket, you send Cica through the portal. There's silence for about 20 minutes as the cat presumably follows your orders. Suddenly, she emerges from the portal screeching and hissing, her tail curled towards her body. She stops for a moment, looking back at the portal and shaking in fear before diving into the rat's nest.

What do you do?

Rurgosh looks around and frowns, "Wee ones gun. Plus something powerful in the area still." he states moving forwards with his light trying to figure out what it may be that took Mouse and what has been lurking down here.

"Rurgosh!" Reszket yells. "There's a strange portal down here and whatever lies beyond has scared Cica senseless." Without waiting for a response she adds, "I think we should investigate."

Rurgosh, Death lingers in the air around you like a festering wound. The rats must have felt it too- they ran in the opposite direction. You're also fairly certain they took Mouse with them.

As you feel the press of death against your skin, your attention is drawn towards the portal. The energies that bind it to this realm and to this room leave signs and traces that are familiar to you. You know them to be necromantic in nature. What are those signs, and where have you encountered something like this before?

"The rats turned tail when they felt the presence of this portal's energy and no doubt took the wee one in the process." the dwarf explained before looking to the portal, "We can investigate but the rune pattern suggests something undying and a place for it's sactuary, even the undead need a place to rest their head and recoup Reszket. In a tome some time back I read of something like this, it suggested some of the elder gods long forgotten and unknown to the younger races entrusted their most powerful rites to those who would sacrifice themselves to their deity, reborn if their faith was true as an undying servantor to their god and religion, in this they would not falter due to earthly desires, age, disaster, or calamity. Some championed and protected an artifact, others safeguarded knowledge... the wrinkle in all this is was a daft noble would have the stones to build his home over such a place. They may have been in a deep sleep or trapped here... maybe helping they have a task we can help with and they would in turn help us... these areas seem cut and worn of stone older than the mansion by some time." he explains stroking his beard as he smoke a snare on his face... Nothing like assisting the undying in a murdering spree... it's better to side with the undead at times than be in their sights to be consumed.

Reszket tilts her head as a confused look contorts her face, "So.... are you saying we should go in?"
Jul 25, 2016 10:49 pm
"Might not hurt, worse case we wake up a guardian that's going to kill us." he admits.
OOC:
I'm suggesting this first since Phantom has been MIAish a bit in other games. Plus he has a little one so I'm thinking something Daddy related came up.
