Ilvaria: Playtesting a Narrative Driven RPG

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

I originally joined GP to test Legends of Ilvaria in a play by forum environment. Ilvaria is a homebrew RPG system inspired by Wushu that borrows elements from a few of my other favourite RPGs (mostly Mouse Guard, Burning Wheel and the design principles of Savage Worlds, and a dash of Apocalypse), and mixes in some strategy board game mechanics and principles to put some meat on the bones of a narrative driven game.

I'm posting to see if there's any interest in giving this a whirl with me to see how the system holds up to play!

The bullet point of 'features' would be something like:

- High Action, Gritty, Narrative Driven Fantasy Adventure
- Skill Based Character Advancement
- Blank Slate Setting, Scenes and World
- Fast and Furious Gameplay
- Modular Rules; add/remove features to customize the play experience

I've returned to the system, now a year later, and have been slowly updating the rules and finishing what I started. I've updated most of the rules (just not the GM section, or the modules - some of which I will want to try; specifically modules for alchemy, inventory (PbF rules), wealth and magic items). I'm open to making other modules as well (perhaps you'd like rules for races, or something else from fantasy RPGs you really like but isn't part of Ilvaria, such as an explicit magic systems).

The current rules doc is here

If you're in, have a look at the rules as you can and feel free to cast preliminary judgement. You can also start thinking about your characters. As a Blank Slate system, we are meant to create the world, factions, deities, societies, metaphysics etc as needed (I haven't written the section in the rules about how to play a Blank Slate yet, but I'm sure you RP experts can dig it ;) ).

I'll create a game forum when we have 4 or so people interested.

I'd love to join!

I really like the Details feature. I think it lends itself well to the concept of Play-By-Post.

Hi Candi, I'd love to play as well. Had a quick look through the the rule doc, and I appreciate the narrative focus.

Cool! I'll start the game up later tonight, and post here when it's up. Do feel free to think about characters in the meantime. Skies the limit. I've had detective bird people, and Roman soldiers in this system,

If you're taking more people count me in too! :-)

If GP has a hand in developing a new system, I'm gonna be so happy :D

It'll have a hand, for sure, as we're testing it here!

My plans for this project at the moment are to release it CC-share-alike.

Just for ease of future reference, would you edit the game description and/or the game forum to include the reference to the rules document?

Yes I can. I did that before but I couldn't put hyperlinks in the Game Details, I'll try html and worse case I'll just leave a raw link.

Are you already playing and has someone applied for the last slot yet?

Just making characters, and nope, apply away!
