Anyone interested in trying out Shadowrun 6E?

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

I've heard mixed reviews about the latest edition of Shadowrun, but I'd like to give it a fair chance and try it for myself. I'm happy to GM a game, who's up for it? Looking for ~4 players, aiming to start in about a week or so once everyone's had a chance to get familiar with the rules.

I'm not aiming for a particularly "high-concept" game, just a typical romp through the seedy shadows of Seattle. With that in mind, tell me about who your character would be! Feel free to submit more than one if there are a few things you'd like to try.

Catch you in the Sprawl, chummer!

I have played a bit SR 6e as a mage. I could make a street sammy for your game

Man, if I hadn't just joined a bunch of games and started running one, I'd be all over this.

kadeton we were just playing SR6e here in this forum -- you should talk to BedzoneII about it he was the GM -- although runekyndig was in that game as well -- one of the problems is the game is currently (compared to its predecessors) rather incomplete

It's been a while since I last played Shadowrun, and while I own the 6E starter, I haven't actually gotten around to cracking it open as I've had no one to play with. I've got some old characters to recycle, so I'd be interested in giving it a go.

I disagree, it has been simplified, but I am not sure it has been simplified enough. But if you expect to be familiar with 6e just because you were familiar with 5e then you will be confused

I have a 6e game currently running with 6 committed players, a long campaign style rather than a short romp. Perhaps the shorter mission-style quest might suit SR on PbP better. I believe I've thoroughly given the 6e rules a go, and am more than happy to share my view on it, here or over messages. Since the comparison with 5e is mentioned here, my quick comment is, don't think of it as 5e. :)

What are the main things that you were missing? It'll be helpful to know what to watch out for.

Yeah, this is a deliberate strategy for me now. I get so involved in world-building and planning out epic campaigns, but the nature of PbP just doesn't suit that pace, players' circumstances change and campaigns just fizzle out. Sticking to short, punchy adventures seems like it should work much better.

Definitely interested to hear your thoughts! I take it you're not interested in playing?

I've never played shadowrun but would be curious about it if you were willing to take on a noob?

Yep, not a problem at all!

I'm in two minds about it to be honest. :) :)

Full disclosure, I'm in the midst of converting my SR 6e game into Sixth World (PbtA), as I'm looking for a better PbP system than I think 6e can deliver. But don't take this as a negative, you may certainly get more mileage out of it than I did!

Note from a game designing perspective I feel SR6e could be used if you augment it (House Rule in) with stuff from SR5e but keeping the SR6e more generic feel and perhaps augmenting that feel where needed -- if you would like help with this (assuming you are interested in doing this) I would be more than happy to lend a hand just let me know. Further I think some of the things that BedzoneII implemented worked really well to fill in some of the gaps

I'll second this. There really wasn't anything missing, it was just that flavor didn't match expectations in some cases, so we ended up needing a few small add-ins (which didn't even get used unless I missed it) for our particular vision of Shadowrun.

The system is certainly playable by itself.

And I will agree to disagree with Falconloft and Runekyndig ;) still there are many things that existed in SR5e Canon that are not in the current rendition of SR6e that would require implementation -- such as no bug spirits and no framework for a more permanent spirit ally -- the spider mentor spirit was not included -- and I am going to guess there were many other things that got potentially left out of the SR6e rule set that had been in Canon and the previous more extensive SR5e version --- so not sure why anyone would say it is not missing things because factually things are missing that can not be covered by the current more generalized system -- although I do feel it was a strong step in what appears to be a good direction

And if one were to run a more focused series of one-shots more like stories told in the Canon fiction I think it would work fairly well and even more solidly if some of the Canon stuff that got left out were re-addressed in some fashion. Which will probably happen once they come out with the supplements they are planning to bring out (which unless they go out of business they will most likely do).

All that's flavor. There was nothing missing in the system.
Apr 13, 2020 7:35 pm
Well in that case the SR6e system is completely redundant as it is all just flavor ;) might as well just play free-form. As such I will continue to agree to disagree with your opinion

I'll try to be as polite as possible with this. Knowing the difference between system and setting is a very fundamental thing. A SYSTEM is incomplete if it lacks rules for play. You can play the game with the rules given in 6E without issue. Therefore the rules are complete. You claiming that you can't play the game because of two pieces of setting material is an issue you have with their version of the SETTING. You can continue to disagree all you want to.

No your assumption is that I am saying you cannot play the game as is which is wrong because I never said that. I mean one can literally play this game without any guidelines at all -- aka free-form -- which means these guidelines are not meant to do that. That being said we must infer that they are meant to in fact reflect the Canon in a method that allows one to play a game in a complete manner covering all aspects of Canon that would be important to playing the game using said guidelines -- can you play the game with these incomplete guidelines heck yes but that does not make them any less incomplete -- they are incomplete because they leave out essential elements of established Canon requiring House Guidelines to be created to cover them or to completely ignore them as if they never existed -- so yes I will continue to disagree with all your points of opinion on the SR6e guidelines being complete --- and again just so we are clear -- I never said they were not playable as is all I said was they were incomplete -- two totally different statements

I don't understand how leaving out one form of artillery makes a game incomplete. Besides, I thought Shadowrun was more sci-fi based. Or is this some type of laser cannon?

It does not. It's a fundamental and deliberate misstatement, or, as someone elsewhere called it, pixel-*****ing over an editing choice.
