I've picked a Sailor, Pirate background for my Goliath. A bare-bones backstory is that he's an exile from his tribe and, due to desperation, worked his way down from the mountains to the equally cold seas. He signed on with a ship where his size, strength, and familiarity with the somewhat equivalent societal constructs of a pirate crew made him into a laborer and skull-smasher.
The reasons for being in Leander are primarily financial: there's money to be had on wagers during the tournament, other shipmates would be working the crowds, and a number of connections are ripe for the taking for an entrepreneurial pirate captain. The goliath himself was "volunteered" for entry into the tournament to keep up appearances, but if Stalkhlijan manages to actually win, the riches and rewards will be warmly welcomed.
I equipped the goliath with a quarterstaff for being level 0, and a club for being a sailor. He's got the padded armor and the Bad Reputation, and likes nothing more than bashing in heads.
