I walked into that office dripping wet and clanking like a tin can. 'A wizard is never late' is something they like to say at Morgrave but I definitely was, and maybe that's a sign of how shitty a wizard I am. Not that I care what those bastards think anyway. I don't need their crushed velvet robes and long white beards. What I need is a drink. And maybe a little snack for Ibis, my owl familiar.
The door creaked open and I didn't like that. Like fingernails on a chalkboard. I scanned the inside and see who's here.
Red Moon: Shifter. Competent because civilization never made him soft. Don't get on his wrong side, rules won't hold him back.
Britt: Legs for days was a distraction, and a damn good one. What's a d'Orien in a place like this?
Arianna: Wound tight like a spring that likes to go off. Step lightly.
Misha: Dressed like a million crowns. Why would she took a job with S&S if she had a million crowns? Nice cat.
I reached down and Prestidigitate the hinges, cleaning out the grime and making them squeak no more. I brushed my hands against one of my talismans, the rabbit's foot this time. I haven't called upon that one for two months and I've been saving it up for a night like tonight. Imagine meeting Merrix fucking d'Cannith.
It wasn't every day you got to rub shoulders with a mover and shaker on his level. There was probably a House Cannith strike force with this building in their sights right now in case things went bad.
I nodded to the folks as I enter. It's about as good a crew as you could have asked for. I forced myself to forgo the usual inspection of the room; whatever security precautions and magical surprises House Cannith had put in place to keep their leader safe, the most dangerous thing in the room were these people. That's why Merrix called us here.
I took up a spot with my back to the wall and my front to the door. Best to just
relax, or do my best impersonation of that anyway.
