First off you should think about what type of character you want to play. Not necessarily specific classes or races, just what "type" of character. Is your character someone that likes to punch people in the face, shoot at them from a distance, run away, try and talk things out, work your magic, or something completely different? Are they someone that sticks out in a crowd? Simple stuff like that.
ATTRIBUTES
The PHB has determining your attributes as the third stuff. I like to do it first as it gives me a better idea as to what I may be able to pull. For this game there are two different ways you can determine your attributes, the first being the 27 point buy system.

Basically, you buy you attribute scores based on the table above. You won't get great numbers doing this (as the highest you can buy is 15) but you won't get any terrible ones either. Buy six and assign them to your attributes in any way ya like.
The second way is the 4d6 method. Roll 4d6 six times, throw out the lowest die from each roll, and keep the total. Again, assign these six values however you like. Using the die roller here is pretty easy once you figure it out. If you go the 4d6 route you should post your rolls in the 'Character Creation' thread.

Hit the 'Advanced Button' and you'll be given the option to add rolls to you post.

In the above sample I just entered 6 rolls separated by commas. You can a roll for each one if you like, doesn't really matter. If you've made your roll and the numbers massively suck you can fall back to the standard array for your stats. Just take 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 and assign them how you like. Remember these numbers aren't final, you'll get to add some race bonuses when you've selected your race.
Whatever method you've selected to determine your attribute you should post your scores in the 'Character Creation' thread.
RACE
Mechanically the races give you special abilities (or traits) and ability score increases. Most races also have sub-races which will give you additional traits and ability score modifications. Let's look at Dwarves as an example and some of the traits you'll want to pay particular attention to (and mark on your character sheet).
All Dwarves increase their Constitution by 2.
They have base speed of 25' (which is important during combat).
They have Darkvision out to 60'.
Advantages on Saving Throws against poison damage.
Proficient with the battleaxe, handaxe, throwing hammer, and warhammer (you'll get to add your +2 proficiency bonus to your attack with those weapons)
They can speak Common and Dwarvish.
Dwarves are either Hill or Mountain Dwarves (their sub race). A Hill Dwarf gets to add 1 to their wisdom score and gains an additional hit point each time the level up.
