Pfff... i can't believe there are people like this. I mean, ok, real life happens, but at the very least you should warn your players that you won't be able to conduct the game.

it is bad form just to disappear without warning, especially when you are the GM and other players are dependent on you.

But for the years I have been playing here, it has only happened a few times for me.

It's happened 3 times to me in the last 8 months. Covid seems to have made it considerably worse.

Seems to be happening a lot more often recently. This GM is the first one I've personally seen, though, who started games with a lot of fanfare and then just closed them without any explanation and disappeared. Ghosting is more common, but taking the time to close down the game without also informing the players is a first for me.
