INTEREST CHECK - Star Finder ROOKIE

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

I started an IRL Star Finder game with some co-workers that lasted exactly ONE session. That's my level of experience. But I'd like to try again. The ship dynamics really intrigue me. I will replace the ship's computer and engineer with an NPC named Fe-O. A gorilla with a fish-bowl for a head (a la 1950's sci-fi) so that no one needs to fill the boring roles.
I've got some fun ideas about ships and adventures.
But I need players who will bare with me as I learn the game.

I can give this a whirl -- DnD in space with maybe a bit Shadowrun thrown in ;) or something completely different depending on what you plan to do with it :D

I have played one game that did not go beyond Lev 2. I would like to see some more of the game. So if we start at a few levels, I'm interested, if we start at level 1, I'm not so keen

I think Starfinder might be cursed, but I'd be willing to give it another go...

...but what's boring about an engineer?
Oct 23, 2020 7:57 am
also interested - Starfinder in PbP is cursed indeed, the rare campaigns seem to inevitably die...

I have an Ysoki envoy merchant ready, that I'd like to take out for a spin.

Very interested in a Starfinder game. Count me in if you have room. Thanks.

I don't know exactly. Something I read before buying the rulebook said the only weak spot was playing the engineer. So I decided to make the engineer an NPC. It turned out really well. The engineer doesn't have a lot of actions to choose from, and most of them (like fix the damage the ship just took are basically automatic) My plan was that the engineer, an android, never leaves the ship, and is essentially part of the ship. If a player couldn't make a session, the engineer would call them to help with some emergency and the story would progress for the rest of the group logically without them.

To me, the ship dynamics were what really make the game. Without them it really is just D&D in space. Zapping a martian with a ray gun is no different than zapping a goblin with a wand.

OK, how about we let the dice decide?

starting level (1d6+1) = 2+1 = 3

no advanced posts here, so I rolled an actual d6

Hehe I'm good with that 🙂

What did you do for a character sheet? There isn't a template here.
Oct 23, 2020 8:37 pm
I used this google sheet to help me keep track of it all, and then just a custom sheet in GP

Same here! If you are still looking for players.

I bought the Starfinder CRB a few months before the covid hit, so I haven't been able to give it a whirl yet. :(

I created the character with book pen and paper, then used a custom template to type it in I think.

OK, how about this? You guys figure out character sheets, while I figure out rules etc. runekyndig has a template you can copy.

Here's the hook, remember your 3rd level characters, not some kids.

Okay you are going to have us create characters outside the game rather than from within the games framework??
Oct 25, 2020 2:45 am
The universe is filled with all kinds of starships. Freighters, explorers, battle cruisers, that can take you anywher in the blink of an eye.

Of course, for those who don't have a billion credits, there's rusted old jalopies doing an interplanetary 'milk-run' too. That's where you find yourself. A crowded, stinking, space "bus". Your pretty sure you just saw one of the larger passengers eat one of the smaller ones. And you really don't want to know what that pool of liquid is on the floor, you just try not to let it touch your feet.

You were a BIG deal on your home world. TOO big. What choice did you have? Absalom Station is the only place someone like you can meet their destiny....

So it's not a light-jump-limo, not even a tachyon-taxi. Who cares? The bus will get there in a day or two. Anything you can imagine is available at Absalom Station, and finally, you...will...

Well, no. I just didn't realize there would be no character sheets the GM can rely on. I will learn the system, bur you need to too.
Oct 25, 2020 3:19 am
I'm not sure how to handle characters. You should all be strangers on a bus. There will be other passengers too, I don't want you to know who's who yet. Send me your characters privately I guess, PM or note, I'll make copies and I'll make a character forum when you start tio meet each other

Okay so are you going to start a game and invite the players to that?

That sounds like an interesting challenge, but
1. Make a game forum
2. Invite the players
3. Ask the players NOT to submit their characters yet, but to send the GM a copy

But do NOT ask us to invest energy in character creation, just to be told that we can not play in a full game. It will not win you any friends
Oct 25, 2020 7:33 pm
Yeah what runekyndig said -- just note character sheets submitted to the game are only viewable by the GM and the player that submitted it so no issue with others knowing anything about another character via that method

That is not entirely true. If you go into Characters>All characters and click the gray book so it becomes red the character sheet is visible for all.
Oct 25, 2020 7:52 pm
Yeah okay if you change the basic default status which is not something someone new to the forum would do you can change the default status of not being able to be seen --- further the players can make the character sheet public as well -- so yeah there are ways beyond the default system to make a character sheet public for others to see
Oct 25, 2020 7:58 pm
But by delaying the character submit, the other players cant my character on the character list and guess that my character is Mightymouse.
But I guess that our actions will be posted in secret notes to the GM and the GM will then copy/paste and add the NPC's action, just to keep us guessing who is playing Mightymouse or if he is a NPC
Oct 25, 2020 9:10 pm
Well it would be a shame to have someone role playing and using meta game knowledge but I suppose it happens but it is not something I do I always consider only what my character actually knows versus what I know when determining their actions which makes these -- a bunch of strangers meet in a pub and decide to trust each other to the point of risking their lives and going on an adventure with them -- not work very well. As my characters (unless designed that way) will never trust someone out of the gate to that degree. But I have seen players do that - basically trust someone just because their are supposed to be a PC ... and as a GM I have used that from time to time against them -- of course I do the flip-side of that as well not every NPC is untrustworthy but if you treat them as such they will leave and you lose that benefit. Basically I try to teach players to treat a PC and an NPC just like they were normal people rather than with some pre-meta-gamed view. So if Mighty Mouse was a potential PC played by you, I would treat them no differently than a Mighty Mouse that was an NPC and I would hope the rest of the players were of a higher caliber role player to not use Meta Game Knowledge

Then of course because as a GM I want to facilitate the game, I try to create relationships between the characters that gives them a solid reason to trust someone such as maybe A knows B and C is B's sister and D is known by C etc... Thus everyone has a solid connection to the group as a whole and a reason to trust at least someone within the group that they would be willing to risk their life for in such an endeavor. Yeah a bit more work on the GM side but it helps the game start off more organically as well as add dynamics down the road that would otherwise not ever have existed

send me a private character sheet (as best you can) and if there's enough interest and we can put a party together, it's a go.

Don't share any of your character ideas with other players yet. The story starts with a group of complete strangers
Oct 26, 2020 1:31 pm
we have a captain, and an engineer. We need

pilot
science officer
gunner
gunner

don't tell us what you want just yet, make a character that would fill the roll well, and let me know privately.
Oct 26, 2020 2:32 pm

no no no.

I just want the characters to be strangers on a bus. The story will cause them to meet and then all will be revealed. If everything is revealed at first, the opening scenes will be a bit of a bore. But not knowing who's who will help. I did this at a IRL game once and it really worked well. I'm not sure it will translate to PbP, but I'm gonna give it a go
Oct 26, 2020 2:33 pm
Interesting you have not actually started this game and you have a NPC/PC? captain, an NPC engineer, NPC/PC? pilot, so when are you going to officially start the game and let us know who you have accepted and who you have not accepted??

Again all we (some of us anyway) are asking is a commitment from you the GM as to who is in the game prior to investing time and energy into a character -- I have met many a GM who has had more players than they wanted and then after everyone had invested several hours into creating a 2D character the GM told some of them they could not play in the game. As such I do not invest energy into a Character until I have a commitment from the GM. Then it would nice if that GM was able to help make the 2D character more 3D

Frankly, I'm kind of on the opposite side of that argument - reviewing at least character concepts if not character sheets not only prevents first-come, first-served games where the people who check the forum every 15 minutes get the jump on slots, but lets the GM build and tailor the group based on the best or most interesting submissions.

Applying to games and being accepted and rejected after submitting a concept or even after complete chargen is the way I've seen it done on most other sites I've been a part of.

Sorry folks, I got suddenly swamped at work, for a new project - withdrawing my participation, have fun!
Oct 26, 2020 4:50 pm
ah, I get it now.

I don't need a fully fleshed out character yet. Let's just start with interest. So far I have strong interest from 3 players who have PM'ed me, and one NPC.

I don't have a problem with two people who want to be pilots, that's life. I'm just trying to prevent people from spilling the beans about their character ideas in this public forum.

It's a tricky thing to balance, but I've already invested lot's of hours, and dollars, in the rule books....

In the interests of not hijacking the thread, I'll just say I disagree on pretty much every point there, and don't think what's being asked is fundamentally unreasonable.
