IC: Chapter II - Return to Escaroth

Oct 31, 2020 9:05 pm
Caranthiel, Astrid, Finrod, Winfred and Vidar rumble back into Esgaroth on their wagon. There's no festival on, this time, and as such, feels a little anticlimactic, considering the adventure that was concluding. More than one player-hero will have a sneaking "where is our greeting?". Nevertheless, when you get the Tollhouse, mentioning the name of Leiknir gives a suspiciously* smooth entry under the Gatehouse, without even a token searching of your wagon!

As you lumber into the market square, a wet teen climbs out of the water between it and the next house and splashes up to you. They are sufficiently grubby that their gender is indeterminate.

"You'll be the group Master Onar told me to find. I'm Edda. Did you have a good trip? Was there treasure? Can I see the traeasure? Was there monsters? I've never seen a monster, although I've been told about lots by the bigger kids. Do they bleed black? I hear they don't bleed like us."

The stream of questions only briefly stops to direct you where to put the wagon, and where you're staying: The Dragon's Arms. It's a large pub with some stylised dragon wings painted onto its wooden facade. The common room is huge, and well filled with Men and Dwarfs. Few Elfs though. The few snatches of words you hear are all about trade, roads, weather, etc. You're assigned rooms, on the Leiknir account says Inga, who hands you your room and meal tokens. She gives you a polite smile but will move onto the next arrival the moment you stop talking to her.

Edda will help unpack in the hopes of a penny. "Anyways Master Onar says you should come to him tomorrow, the first hour after sunrise. Hey HEY did you bring a dead body!? Why did you bring a dead body back? You rescued someone! Wow. Do you need me to find a healer? I know a healer". Edda wants this penny.

The near-corpse of a man is still breathing steadily, but not waking. That's all he's done on the return journey.
OOC:

Starting at pace as I want to introduce em's character in the next scene. For the things I've starred, consider these some points to consider - how suspicious is your character at the smooth entrance to Laketown? Are they pleased to be back? How did they find the return trip?

Also yes my Lord of the Rings is a bit more Guy Ritchie than Peter Jackson.

Finally, you're not getting a Fellowship phase immediately, but you will be getting one soon. What I will do is start a separate thread on Fellowship activities in a week or so and we'll do it in parallel, as I figure it'll take a bit of time to explain for those who haven't done one before.
Nov 4, 2020 8:24 pm
OOC:
Can I just check before posting anything in character - is Onar the same person as Leiknir?
Sorry if that's a stupid question, just want to get it straight before I commit to starting haha.
Nov 4, 2020 11:19 pm
OOC:
yep full name Onar Leiknir sorry :)
Nov 5, 2020 10:38 pm
Out of all the banter Edda spews Winfred only understood the bit for the healer. "Yes child If you could bring the healer here that woudl be most helpful."
Nov 5, 2020 11:04 pm
A healer comes about an hour later. He is introduced as Girthun, and looks remarkably miserable for a healer, however this could be his extreme suspicion about this comatose man you have presented to him. "What happened to this...man to end up like this? He's barely alive! But I don't see any weapon damage to him.
Who did you say he was again?
". Girthun sends Edda off to ask Inga for more wood for the fire.

i Think i was in the middle of covid jobbing when this happend, i started right before we left and came back on the way back when yall were fighting the shadow beast
so this dood is a complete mystery :D
Nov 6, 2020 8:44 pm
OOC:
Well consider this some easy roleplay bonus as basically none of you know who he is. But what are you going to tell the nosey doctor? Make something up, or the truth? They'll need different skills and if you get too wild there may be Shadow Points...
Nov 10, 2020 3:46 pm
OOC:
OK, gene's dropped out. Sad times.

Does anyone want to talk to this doctor at all? em can't even start until the next scene, which I'll just ffwd to otherwise.

OOC:
i mean i can lie out of my pocket but i'll be making stuff up without context
Nov 10, 2020 8:49 pm
OOC:
I could tell you guys what your characters know about him, if you've forgotten as players?

He's dressed like a "frontier" North-man. You found him wasting away in the lair of an abominable servant-creature of the Shadow. Only apparent wounds were some poorly healing/repeatedly re-opened bite wounds.

Whether you tell him the truth or not, or how much of it, or whatever, is of course up to you guys.
Nov 10, 2020 9:04 pm
OOC:
more then i had lets roll with it :?: some bite wounds huh... ;.;
"We're not sure what happend to him. We wern't able to awake him. We found him nigh alive in a cavern where we took shelter one night." Winfred offers up.

"Is there anything you can do to help him?"
Nov 10, 2020 9:08 pm
OOC:
Deception roll then, please!
"You just found him? Like this?". Girthun looks round at Winfred.

"Yes he was in the back of the cave."

Deception - (1d20+1)

(5) + 1 = 6

Nov 11, 2020 2:20 pm
Arriving home to Esgaroth, Astrid is characteristically quiet but her thoughts on dark subjects. Looking around at the people of Laketown, she can't help but imagine the evils that such a beast could visit on them. She had seen Orcs first hand at the Battle of Five Armies and hunted many beasts of the wild but this was different in how evil and potent it seemed.
She said nothing and, in fact, took little in on their way to the Inn as she brooded on such dark thoughts and concerns.
Following in the wake of the rest of the party, somewhat passively, it was only the entry of the healer that starts her from her fretting.

Almost at the same time as Winfred answers the healers question, Astrid replies bluntly 'He has been fed on by some fell bat creature of the Shadow. His needs are beyond our care.' her eyes narrowing and darting to Winfred as she hears the obvious omissions from her answer.
OOC:
Apologies guys for the very tardy response to this. I'm in now!

OOC:
Winfred, yeah that applies here I think and will help your terrible roll, but you still aren't amazingly convincing.
Girthun physically recoils, rearing away from his patient (and you lot).

"By the grace of- ... Well, I can see why you don't want to talk about it. And in fact, maybe I shouldn't know. Well, I suppose I wasn't sure how to heal him before, so maybe this won't change much. He appears physically exhausted, maybe he has been ....c-consumed. I'll come back and check on him, meanwhile, keep him warm, still, and quiet. Go and sit in the common room or something."

He gives instructions to Edda for small amounts of broth to be provided by Inga several times a day. He leaves, looking worried.
OOC:
Right, anyone drop in here what they want to do before seeing your taskmaster tomorrow, however in order to bring em in i'll write a new post in a few hours starting the next scene. It'd be nice to have some flavour of an evening off, but it's not essential.
Nov 11, 2020 9:25 pm
OOC:
lols i don't need to be :) i just a simple girl who keeps getting caught on adventures :D
Winfred got nothing but restocking on medical supplies. especially since our other healer decided to retreat from the caravan.
Nov 11, 2020 11:01 pm
In the common room, Vidar looks uneasy. On the bright side, he doesn't sing, either. Eventually he speaks:

"I don't think I was supposed to come back to Laketown. I'm not sure my Purpose lies here. I won't see Master Leiknir tomorrow, I'll stay and keep an eye on our patient seeing as that Healer seemed pretty worried about him. Perhaps some devotion will inspire me into the right course of action"
The next day, Edda finds you in the common room again having breakfast, and offers to take you to Onar Leiknir's office. She asks about the patient (unchanged), the food, how the weather compares between here and anywhere else, and generally fills in any gaps in the conversation. She takes you past the Guild-Hall, as busy as the Market pool and square, but this time with people in much fancier dress.

It doesn't take much Insight to realise that something is up. People are gathered in small groups, and looking around at everyone else. And it gets worse as you go along. Eventually Edda picks up on it. "Uh, w-what's going on?" she stammers. "W-why's it quiet here? Why's the guard here?". She slows in her steps that lead toward a cluster of guards fending off a small crowd of curious laketowners. They assure all that there is nothing to see.

As the tension builds she suddenly runs ahead of you, wriggling past the guards and into the door behind them. She screams.

"Master Onar is dead!"

A high elf stands amongst the crowd, apparently also trying to make some sense of the subdued chaos. As Edda cries out she looks to the girl and moves toward her, carefully picking her way through the crowd.

"Le suilon, miss... eh..." she glances to the tumultuous knot of people, "You... knew master Leiknir well?", she looks apologetic for her intrusion, but also clearly has need to speak to someone.
Nov 13, 2020 9:02 pm
Ira will meet Edda as she's shooed back by the guards. "He, uh, well..he's a good man. Better than my last boss. And he paid well. And on time.". Her pretence of detachment is not convincing, as a few tears track down her face. She doesn't even notice Ira is an Elf. The town guard move you back with a time-honoured "Nothing to see here". Again, they're not terribly convincing either.
OOC:
Any decent Insight tells you they're pretty rattled. Is it because of the seniority of the victim or something in the crime scene?
You're a couple of handful of paces back from the front of this fancy-but-not-oversize wooden building, which now has a guard in front of its door in case Edda tries getting in again. Three more guards are keeping the crowd back while muttering among themselves.
Nov 14, 2020 1:43 am
Rae blinks and straightens, a little confused by the human's obfuscation of her attachment, but she composes herself quickly - reminding herself this can simply be the way of Man at times.

"I am... so sorry... that you have lost your employer. And a good man at that. Death is so final...

I had a... business connection to him as well. Though I'd not yet had the pleasure of his acquaintance.
", she scrutinizes the crowd and the guards for what must be the tenth time.

"This... is insensitive, I know, and I am sorry. But, you're the first person I've met who had a direct connection to him and... well, would you happen to know who I might seek out? Eh... did master Leiknir have a major domo? Someone who managed his affairs?", she shakes her head, clearing her mind of what's been burdening it for a moment.

"Again, I am sorry. My name is Iraemorne, of Rivendell."
Nov 14, 2020 12:14 pm
Edda finally looks up and her eyes widen. "Uh, my Lady!? My name is Edda, uh, an it please thee". Clearly, she doesn't talk to Elves much. "He's got a page, Harald. Oh yes, here he comes now, in fact." She points at a thin, wiry man who is pushing his way through the crowd.

"I came as soon as I could. What's happened here?". He sees the party (including Ira) and physically double-takes. "Oh, why would your business cause this?". The guards suddenly eye you all suspiciously.

"This is no place for discussing this crime," says a guard with better armour than the rest. "Join me inside.".

He looks over the players. "And in fact, you will join us as well, I think. We will squeeze in to the waiting room.".
You're politely but firmly ushered into the building, to the disappointment of Edda who is left outside ("hush, child" etc).

"Now, Captain Redsong, please tell me what's happened to our Steward?" Harald asks.

"In a word, murder.

It may be a burglary gone wrong, the office was being searched. It's a mess up there, with the body on top of most of the debris. Or maybe this was some planned kill, with the destruction just a distraction. What can you tell us? Who are these people?
" the guard Captain responds, gesturing at you.
Nov 16, 2020 3:44 pm
"My name is Iraemorne, of Rivendell. I came to Esgaroth on business, with the deceased master Leiknir... Arriving just this previous evening, I have witnesses in the Elven Quarter that can account for my whereabouts.

I know nothing more of this man's murder than what you have told us...
", she eyes the company, noting their road weariness and gear.

Perhaps these are the ones...
Nov 16, 2020 9:34 pm
OOC:
But... edda... :,(

At us or at Iraemorne?
"We just returned from an errand he set us on in {insert town}. We just got back but a few moments ago." Winfred offers shyisly
Nov 16, 2020 10:45 pm
OOC:
You were at his family home, Leiknir Manor, far North of here. Yes the captain is gesturing at all the PCs
Both Harald and Cpt Redsong look askance at the news of your errand. Harald says "Oh of course, Edda welcomed you back last night did she not?
Ah, master Leiknir was very pleased indeed to hear of the return of even some of his family heirlooms
". He then chokes up a little bit.

"Valuable, were they?" Redsong asks.

TinheadNed sent a note to emsquared
Nov 16, 2020 10:53 pm
CaveJohnson says:
"Heirlooms I suspect."
"Do you mean, 'not valuable' then?"
OOC:
Me and both NPCs are confused :)
Nov 16, 2020 11:15 pm
OOC:
iirc we went to get any remnants from the previous house, so I assume we were going for heirlooms
Quote:
"Valuable, were they?" Redsong asks.
Nov 16, 2020 11:57 pm
Her eyes flash for a moment as Harald the steward confirmed her suspicions.

It's them. They have it.

She visibly relaxes somewhat. But then a moment later she tenses again, DO they have It? Where have they left It?! If the murderer was seeking It, they'll know they struck too soon... And then they would wait and observe... The pony and cart they brought here.

She swallows and tries to remain casual, "Do you have anymore questions for me, Captain? I can leave you the information of my witness?
Nov 18, 2020 11:17 pm
Captain Redsong shakes his head distractedly "No more questions, but don't leave the town. And yes, provide your details before leaving, please". He goes back the rest of the party.

"So you turn up the night before Master Leiknir is murdered by assailants unknown after running an 'errand' across the breadth of the country that you're saying is just knick-knacks of purely sentimental value? That seems... " Harald takes him away for a conversation the other side of the room for a few minutes, and you can't overhear it.
OOC:
I'll take the narration on a little, but this could be a good time for Ira to introduce herself (or vice versa)
Eventually they come back, Harald looking calm and the Captain looking slightly irritated. He says "Alright fine, Harald when I said I owed you a favour this is definitely not what I had in mind. But you're all free to leave, providing you leave your contact details.".

Harald coughs. Redsong glares and continues "And I'd accept your independent input on the terrible scene upstairs under Harald's character recommendation. I'm going to keep the crowds away and see if we found any witnesses, please let me know your thoughts". And angrily stomps out. The guards follow, looking very curious indeed.

It's just the party and Harald now. Unconcealed grief now covers his face. "Woe to this day. A good man has fallen, and I have to keep secrets from the town guard. Who could have done this? The only thing I know is that it was none of you. We will talk of your errand later, in safer locations. But keep what you found secret. And keep it safe!"

He gestures for you to follow him upstairs, where you see a large desk, with a few scrolls on it, and the corpse of Master Leiknir, bled out. There are many stab wounds. The office has many books - no longer on shelves. Drawers have been emptied from the furniture and tipped on the floor.
Nov 19, 2020 6:33 pm
Iraemorne writes down her contact's info in the Elven Quarter, and she's about to leave when Harald escorts the Guardsman from the room. She looks to the Company and moves in close and low to them, and she speaks quietly and quickly her eyes darting to the door ensuring the others don't return before she's finished, "The circumstances are... unfortunate, but this is how it must be.

You'll have to forgive my manner, but the matter is urgent. My name is Iraemorne Aegwen... I have been sent by Erestor of House Half-Elven, of Rivendell. The deceased master Leiknir was tasked by the White Council itself with obtaining a journal once possessed and written by Isildur himself.
", she pauses only a moment, searching the Company's faces for any signs of recognition of the legendary names she's throwing at them, "Master Leiknir believed, and therefore I believe, that you all came into possession of this journal, on your mission to his ancestral home.", she thrusts out a rolled up piece of paper. The wax seal of House Leiknir still clinging to an open edge.

Hey eyes flick to the door and she wets her mouth, which is dry with anticipation. Having handed off the proof of her mission to the Company, and hearing Harald and the Guardsman returning, she straightens and composes herself.

Rae clears her throat, "Perhaps I will see you all about the city?", she bows to each of the parties and moves to leave the room.
Nov 25, 2020 4:14 pm
OOC:
All, I need input. Unless I'm missing something, Ira's off out, although trailling her links to the story, and the rest of you are standing by a corpse. What is everyone doing?
Nov 25, 2020 4:47 pm
OOC:
Kinudig and Giblets haven't been very present since the return to action, so hopefully they'll start up again?

That's been a little demoralizing for me, and probably Cave, too.

As for Rae, I tried to broadcast what her thought process was in-character but, presumably the journal is just sitting in the cart, so Rae just wanted to make sure it's secured/on her or someone's person. Because if whoever murdered Leiknir was looking for the journal, when he didn't have it, presumably they'd keep looking for it.

Once that's sorted out she would seek out the Company/go to the crime scene.

So if there's gameplay in securing the journal, we could go thru that Ned? Or if it's just a matter of saying she does it, that's what I want to do first, so could she just do it/have done it, and fast-forward to her at the crime scene?
Nov 25, 2020 7:55 pm
OOC:
The journal was left in the tavern. I think we can just say it's secured though, otherwise you get the kind of logic of "we should split the party to guard our stuff" which might be realistic but not so fun a story! Vidar will protect it with the strength of ten Dwarves because his heart is pure, or something.
Nov 25, 2020 8:36 pm

oh no, i wasnt reading cause i thougth it was a bit for you and the story :D
Nov 25, 2020 8:45 pm
OOC:
is there anything i can do with the body? estimate time of death, type of weapon used, (ice pick, dagger, knife, wavy dagger sword ect..)

I also don't know what information to give, I would guess i would be staying at an inn nearby. I was at Lenkirs side when the party arrived so i thats my assumption.

Rolls

Medicine (Class)(Exp)+7 - (1d20+7)

Nov 25, 2020 11:13 pm
The body is cold (so not the end of the night), and has many defensive wounds on the arms. Onar was fending off an attacker. The fatal wound isn't too deep, looks to have been a lucky thrust rather than a death-strike, with a short blade or the tip of a weapon. If this was an assassination it was pretty clumsy.
OOC:
You don't have to know the the inn name OOC, just "i give the inn name" is fine. It's the Dragon's Arms, see the first post.
Nov 30, 2020 2:00 pm
OOC:
To be clear, I am waiting for player input.
Nov 30, 2020 4:40 pm
Rae isn't much of an investigator, but she had her keen elven senses at least... she paces about the room, searching for any sign of the attacker that might have been left behind. Boot print? Sediment? Torn cloth? Simple things that could inform the situation.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+4)

Nov 30, 2020 7:24 pm
No sediment, although you're not too surprised by that, being on a lake. If anything the floor is..damp. On the first floor? The stairs are dry. The humans in the party won't have noticed, but you heard the rain on the roof last night. What seems weirdly subtle to others is reasonably obvious to your eyes - the window ledge is still wet, but the window is closed.
OOC:
sherlock clue-searching montage optional here

dat holiday time sorry :(
Winfred would write down the information needed to satisfy the constable.

Winfred stands from the body. "It looks like the attack was planned. Poorly. But all it takes is a lucky thrust to down your target." She wipes Leiknir blood on the fringes of her garments.
"Perhpas Lord Leiknir was a better fighter then he looked."
Dec 1, 2020 3:23 pm
Gesturing to the wetness on the floor, " I would say it seems like our murderer was just supposed to be a burglar ... Perhaps came in and-or left through the roofs and window, making sure to cover their entry or exit, as a skilled burglar might. But wasn't a particularly skilled combatant..."
OOC:
Investigative montage away! I say. I could roll investigate, but am unskilled in it. Rae would gladly give a Help action anyone who's better at it?
Dec 1, 2020 8:29 pm
OOC:
i'm not against a sherlock Montage, I've got survival if that helps :D but not investigate.
"My how bizarr, why would someone." Winfred pauses as if a idea hit her like a wet noodle. " Was he hiding something?"
Dec 1, 2020 10:41 pm

OOC:
Aside from drudging through the rest of the house, I guess about the only thing left to look for that I can think of is, like, if anything is missing? Like, if a bunch of his books are missing, or his hand-written journals, that might tip us off that they were looking for books or journals? Or if money is missing, that could muddle things?

And I guess that's probably more a matter of just asking Harald?
Dec 2, 2020 10:35 pm
Harald shows you a list:

* petty cash (10gp worth in silver)
* a liquor bottle
* 7-8 (harald isn't sure) books, about the same number that's left behind

Harald says "There are more valuable things that they didn't take, I assumed they just took the small old books because they're valuable, but on reflection I don't think those were the most valuable books here. And anyway, there's not exactly a thriving black market here of books from the Second Age. Who's going to buy it?". He looks unsurprisingly downcast and a bit bewildered.
Dec 4, 2020 4:07 pm
Rae nods at Harald's accounting.

"The Second Age has forgotten more than the Third will likely ever know, master steward... Do not underestimate the value of such knowledge.", she says, before turning to the Company, "Well, we can report our findings to the Guard? I don't know where that leaves us though... I think we need to have a conversation?"
Dec 4, 2020 11:37 pm
Winfred shrugs in agreence. "I'm not sure either."
Dec 5, 2020 8:45 pm
OOC:
So some example things you can do:

* talk to the guard
* see if anyone saw who went in the window
* look for someone selling books
* surprise me :)
