Magnus backstory - Magnus Cleric - War Domain
Magnus grew up as the 3rd son of a prosperous farmer in the countryside surrounding the great city of Baldurs Gate. From his youth it was clear that he was a talented lad who could be a success at whatever he turned to in life. Being a 3rd son he was never going to inherit the farm and he had little interest in managing a farm. His thoughts turned to glory and his parents arranged for Magnus to join the Flaming fists, the Mercenary Company who acted as the military arm for Baldurs Gate.
Magnus proved to be an exemplarily soldier, proficient with weapons, intelligent and a horseman and rose to become a Manip (equivalent to a sergeant).
About five years ago he was leading a group of 10 cavalry of the Fist on a routine mission to reinforce a fort when the group was ambushed by a much larger party of Orcs. The small group of Flaming Fists sold their lives dearly, fighting to the last man. Magnus was left for dead underneath his horse and would have died but was rescued by some local farmers who came across the battle scene a day or so later. In what he thought were his last gasps Magnus swore he would dedicate his life to serving Tyr, the god of war and justice, protecting the weak, if his life was spared.
On his recovery, Magnus knew his life had changed for ever. The Flaming Fists agreed to release him and he went to straight to the nearest Temple of Tyr and dedicated himself to the god. He now leads a wondering life, looking to protect the weak against the evil strong.
Magnus is a well built man of slightly above average height. He has brown hair and fairly unremarkable, amiable features, his only distinguishing mark being a scar across his forehead from the fight with the Orcs. He is usually softly spoken, although when the occasion calls for it he can raise his voice in a sergeants bark.
He is dedicated to protecting the weak and standing up for justice. He cannot abide cruelty or dishonesty, especially from those in authority, although he accepts physical combat against evil doers as a necessity, he tries to avoid killing unless there is no reasonable alternative.
