Chapter 1 - Goblin Arrows

Dec 21, 2020 8:32 pm
A half a day has passed since the group has started down the Triboar Trail and once again Tyr - a young half-elf hired by Gundren to drive the cart and tend to the oxen - is relentlessly regaling everyone with one of his ‘this is an absolute true, why would I lie, just ask my friends’ stories…

"So I look this Arch Lich - I’m pretty sure it was Acereraks’ boss - I look him right in the eye and draw my sword and I say ‘You may be a Lich, but your mama was a`", but before he can finish the sentence he draws back hard on the reins. The oxen shudder in protest but obediently come to a stop. Ahead of you, maybe fifty feet, are two dead horses sprawled across the road, each with several black feathered arrows sticking out of its hide.

"Ewww, gross" Tyr whines "You’re going to need to clear those things from the road if we’re going anywhere."

Unfortunately, Tyr is correct; but at least he has stopped talking for the moment. The woods press close to the trail, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side making the trail all but impassable without moving the dead horses.

As the cart suddenly jerked to a halt, Gerbo is roused from a light doze. Rubbing feeling back into the arm he had slept awkwardly on, he peeked over the top of the cart and saw the horses. Settling back into the wagon, he pulled a hat back down over his hazel-colored eyes with a smirk. "One of you big boys can take care of that. I'll supervise from here."

After getting comfortable again, he suddenly processed the sight of the arrows in the dead animals and poked his head up again over the top of the cart, looking for any sign that the archers were still around.

Dont look at me, I cant do much heavy lifting Grim says Besides, anyone not think this is strange? If it was hunters, they would have taken them or at least carved them up a bit.
Dec 24, 2020 4:50 pm
The half orc had been quietly meditating as the cart trundled along. The sudden jolt snaps her out of the trance. She hops down from the back with a grunt. She stands just short of 6ft, her jet black hair blowing in the breeze as she rounds the cart and sees the horses. She assumed it was just another tree to move from the road. But horses. "Who done this?" her voice harsh and rasping.

She was used to the natural life cycle. Predator and prey. She's killed her fair share of animals for food, but never for fun. She starts to feel her orcish anger building.
Dec 24, 2020 8:02 pm
"Hm." Orel heaves himself out of the cart, landing on the road with a heavy thud. "That's a shame... maybe it was some bandits wanting to get at the people riding them?" He scratches the back of his head in confusion, casting his eyes over the party.

He sighs. "Well, Kerisha, looks like you and I are the strong ones here. Want to help me move these bodies?" He begins to slowly walk towards the horses, his legs warming up from having been sat in the cart for a while.
OOC:
Do the horses have saddles? Saddlebags?
Dec 24, 2020 11:28 pm
By the gods and I thought my ramblings were bad but this seems way far fetched.

Seeing the other travelers get out. "If we're sending them to do the heavy lifting. The rest of us should be on alert incase those possible bandits come back. Just like that time.... " Belanor glances at the driver Tyr.
Belanor scans the area near the horses while keeping a hand on his sword.
oh deer please don't let me actually have to use this. I got this for show... Belanor sighs.

From his position in the front of the cart, a good fifty feet from the horses, Gerbo cannot make out any of the details about the arrows used in the attack. What he does detect while carefully eyeing the surroundings is a bit of movement in the thickets to the right of the road, a little way further down than the horses.

Approaching the scene, Orel and Kerisha come to the harsh realization of what they are looking at; Gundren’s and Sildar’s steeds. The saddlebags of both horses have been looted, leaving nothing behind but a few odds and ends of little value. A leather map bag, with Gundren’s monogram clearly visible on the flap, lies open near the side of the road.

Suddenly, from the right rush two goblins, crashing through the growth that encroaches the trail. The smaller one wields a short sword and is holding a small wooden shield. The larger one, with a scimitar in one hand and what appears be a large pot lid in the other, cries out in a voice that can only be described as a mix between a small child’s raspy scream and a cat vomiting up a hairball, "BREE-YARK!!" Whatever their intentions, it does not appear that they are here to surrender.

Tyr, seeing the two goblins emerge from the thickets, screams, and throws himself into the back of the crowded wagon, ducking down between two crates and remaining out of site. For all his talk it is clear the young half-elf will not be of any help when things turn nasty. Of course, sometimes it is better to be a coward than to be brave. Just as Tyr settles into his hiding spot, two black feathered arrows embed themselves into the front of the wagon.
OOC:

Quickly processing what he was seeing, Gerbo tossed his hat and hopped off the back of the cart. "Time to go to work," he cracked (doing his best to sound sure of himself), as he grabbed his shortbow from the alcove he had it tucked and knocked an arrow.

Well, goblins may be mean buggers, but I like big one's style. I got to get a shield like that!

He laughed to himself, now calmed slightly by the thought of using a pan lid as a shield, and stepped out from behind the cart. Drawing the arrow back, he took aim at the first goblin archer he lays eyes on and released.

When the goblin charge begins, Kerisha looks around and locks eyes with the larger goblin. She lets that rage build a little more as she draws her huge sword. Notches and nicks in the blade already show its had a hard life. brutal battles as part of the hordes training and the internal power struggle. She always believed that even a group who are weaker but fighting as a team, lead to much more strength than any individual. With Orel at her side, this goblin ambush was doomed. From relative safety in front of the wagon Belanor witnesses his incantation take effect. The two goblins battling with Orel and Kerisha slowly fall to their knees, their weapons dropping from their hands as each try to maintain consciousness. It is to no avail, however, as both fall fast asleep at the feet of their opponents.

Watching his little comrades fall, the remaining goblin drops its bow and beats feet across the trail, crashing into the thickets on the opposite side and thrashing his way deeper into the undergrowth.

Orel blinks a few times, swaying on his feat as the cloud of magical sleep washes over him. "Woah..." he looks towards Belanor, "That's... fantastic..."

He shakes his head vigorously, pulling his shield off of his back and strapping it onto his arm as his action, looking around for any more threats (although not using an action to make a perception check). "I have some rope we could use to tie these two up?" The idea of chasing the fleeing Goblin doesn't even cross his mind.
Dec 28, 2020 10:01 pm
The large goblin in front of her falls to its knees. "Time to die".

Kerisha lifts her sword over her head like an executioner, ready to strike. Her eyes start to feel heavy and her breathing slows. The weight of her sword becoming too much, she falls backwards and wakes with a grunt.
Dec 28, 2020 10:46 pm
Perfect! Belanor thinks.
He slowly rises up from his false cover. "That would be wise I don't expect those two to be out for long. Perhaps look after your friend there and make sure she's ok also." Belanor hollers to the 2 near the horse.
Dec 29, 2020 2:55 am
That wasn't so bad! I've got this adventurer thing licked!
Gerbo looks around at what everyone else is doing and shakes his head, wondering why no one has thought yet to check the goblins pockets.
Walking first to the archer he shot, he looks at the arrow to determine if it's worth keeping. Deciding it's not worth it, he moves on to the goblin's arrows. This is shoddy work, but potentially usable? Gerbo wonders to himself.
OOC:
Are any arrows on the goblin archer usable for my shortbow?
Throwing a quick look over his shoulder at the rest of the party and then into the treeline, he digs around in the goblin's clothes to see if there is anything worth keeping.
OOC:
Not sure if you want a roll for this. Feel free to roll something for me if necessary.
Following his journey through the goblin's belongings, he heads back over to the others. "Mean little buggers, aren't they? Would you believe a bartender mistook me for a goblin once? I told him my green complexion was just bad fish, but he threw me out all the same." he said to no one in particular. Looking up at Tyr, he snarks, "What happened to you, hot stuff? Figured you'd let us mortals do all the dirty work?

The sleeping goblins are easily bound with rope, the smaller of the two muttering in its sleep but otherwise unaffected by the process. The larger of the two is obviously awakened while being tied up but tries its best to convince you otherwise, even throwing in some unconvincing snoring noises while peeking through its narrowly open eyes.
[ +- ] Muttered in Goblin
The first thing that Gerbo notices while approaching the fallen archer is the gods awful smell; far more of an assault on the rogue than any of the creature’s arrows were. After a thorough and nauseating search turns up mostly half eaten food and other rotting organic matter, Gerbo hits the jAcKpOt and is able to pocket two silver and six copper pieces. Of the arrows still left in the quiver most are not worth the trouble of collecting, but seven of them seem to be of decent enough build to use.

Poking his head up from between crates in the back of the wagon Tyr cautiously takes in the situation. Once he has assured himself that he is no longer in any danger he stands up tall and puffs out his chest. "You guys will need me for the big stuff! Figured you lot could handle these little things without my help." He says confidently in response to Gerbo’s query.

Feeling the sharpness of Kerisha’s blade against its throat, the goblin gives up the illusion of sleep. Meeting the half-orc’s gaze with its own it manages a slight smirk before looking away.

"Dwarf and man captured by mighty Cragmaw goblins. Klarg send dwarf away. Keep man at cave." it sputters in broken common directly at Orel, ignoring Kerisha entirely. "Let Glart live, Glart take you to man."

"Killing defenseless prisoners. Very classy. Could just cut a limb off to hamper his banditry and send him on his way."

Turning to the goblin, he asked, while picking some dirt from his fingernails with his dagger. "Which do you prefer? Hand or leg? Maybe...you'd prefer a different limb?" Catching an edge, his finger started to bleed slightly. He frowned at it and wiped it on his pants.

He turns to Glart. "Is Cragmaw the name of the cave? How can we get there?"
Dec 30, 2020 5:43 pm
Kerisha growls and lets her blade sink slightly deeper into Glarts throat, drawing a small drip of blood, before retracting it back over her shoulder. She keeps her foot planted squarely on his chest, just to make sure he doesn't get any ideas.
Dec 30, 2020 5:56 pm
The half-elf holds out his hand in reaction to Gerbo’s fake flip. When nothing lands in or around his hand, he concludes that he must have lost the flight of the coin at some point but, in true Tyr fashion, he is unwilling to admit this. He clasps his hand closed and holds it up high in fake triumph, before shoving it deep into his pocket.
Grimacing a bit as Kerisha starts to draw blood, Glart remains calm as he speaks to Orel.

"Cragmaw is mighty goblin tribe!" Glart exclaims with pride. "I take you to cave with human. You talk to Klarg about dwarf."

It pauses for a second, a wicked smile appears, and its voice takes on a more vicious tone.

Lowering his voice, aiming for only his party to hear, he continued, "Speaking of traps, do you think this trap was meant specifically for us? If they got a members of the group heading before us, they might have spilled on our location. They might know more about us than we think."
Jan 3, 2021 7:10 pm
"Hmm." Orel scratches his chin, whispering to the party. "I definitely think we should separate them, to make sure they have their story straight." He glances over at the goblins. "Those horses were definitely Gundren and his companion. They might have known we were following him."

"Not want your gold. Want Klarg gone. Crazy big bugbear work for King Grol, leader of tribe. Klarg capture Dwarf and Human yesterday. Dwarf sent to Grol at castle. Human still in cave."

When enough of the road becomes clear that Belanor thinks Tyr can maneuver though he'll slap Tyr on the shoulder. "Lets ride! We'll pick up the others on the way! Phandalin we come."
Jan 6, 2021 10:07 pm
"Me Tobs" the goblin responds. "No Cart. Trail to cave through woods. We walk."
With a bit of effort Kerisha and others are able to move the horses enough that the cart could squeeze through. Seeing this, Tyr is eager to get moving. "I haven’t been paid to go to a caving. I’m heading to Phaladin with or without you."

"Kerisha, figure out a way to make sure your goblin friend doesn't give us away, please. I'm sure you'll think of something."
After clearing the road, Kerisha faces Glart. She sticks his sword in the ground in front of him and unties his binds. She looks to Orel. An unspoken understanding of "you got my back?"

Attention back to Glart, "Let’s finish this"

The goblin was much swifter than anticipated, its sword drawing from her shoulder as the blade slices flesh. The sight of her own blood stirs the primal rage within. Managing to move its head just out of the path of Kerisha’s blade Glart lets out a quick yelp as the barbarian’s weapon slices through the goblin’s collar bone and completely through its torso. Glart is no more. Tobs lets out a high-pitched cackle at the sight of Glart’s bisection before turning to Garbo and asking if everyone is ready to get to the cave.

Grim’s blast hits some of the tangled undergrowth on the side of the road, causing a flurry of activity by the small family of rabbits that had nested in the area. Grim has just earned himself some new enemies!

Flabergasted Belanor stands and shouts "WHATS GOING ON!? I THOUGHT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO GET A MOVE ON HERE?"
He sits back down. "Flinging all this magic and swords about."
Jan 7, 2021 9:17 pm
Still raging, Kerisha spins to the source of the shouting, her sword dripping with goblin blood. Realising there is no more fighting, she closes her eyes, and breathes deeply. She manages to calm herself and stows her sword on her back. She grunts "Don't trick us" as she walks past Tobs, making it clear he will meet the same fate as Glart if there is any funny business.

Hearing Tyr comment about staying with the cart, Gerbo senses a chance to ditch the man. "Suit yourself. I'm sure you could have handled this trip by yourself, anyways, given how you've taken care of much bigger things. We'll handle this business with our friend here, and you can carry on to Phaladin."
He shoots a shit-eating grin at Tyr before turning to his compatriots. "So, I'm thinking Tobs here can go in front, since he knows the way. I'm thinking Kerisha and Orel can stay near him to keep him honest and I will hang out in the middle with Grim and Belanor can cover our backs. Anyone got a better plan?"
Jan 8, 2021 4:21 pm
"I'd much rather understand whats with all this cave business? Did something happen to Gundrin?"
Jan 8, 2021 6:42 pm
Orel points to the horses, now laying on the side of the road. "Those were Gundrin & his companion's. According to Tobs, here, Gundrin's companion has been taken to a cave, and we all thing Gundrin would appreciate it if we went and saved him."
Jan 8, 2021 7:01 pm
"Ahh. That makes more sense. Tyr, I don't think you've got much waiting for you but you best deliver those goods before the proprietor at Barthen's gets unhappy. We shall meet you there then."

Belanor gets out of the wagon and gabs his gear from the back. Breathing a deep sigh he shoulders his pack.

"The path looks too narrow to walk in a large group, so I figured we'd figured out what order we'd walk in, so we'renot piling into the woods at once. I figured you could take up the rear and watch for anything suspicious behind us. I wouldn't be surprised if there are other things watching us."

Good point. Gerbo isn't a big "adventurer" either, so maybe this salvages it.

Kerisha yanks a tooth from Glarts mouth before moving on. She tucks it in a fold in her armor as a trophy.

"Perhaps theres a river on the way?"
Jan 9, 2021 2:43 am
'River near cave!" Tobs offers, overhearing the conversation. "Orc lady can wash parts of Glart off there."

The little goblin looks around to the rest of the group, obviously eager to get on the trail.

"We go now? Kill Klarg!"
"Yep, ok… I’ll, uh, just make the rest of the trip myself. No, uh. problem." Tyr responds in a less than confident manner. "I’ll just find an inn or something when I get there and wait for all of you – get the coin that Barthen owes for these goods as well."

With a lazy wave Tyr wishes all of the you the best of luck and snaps the oxen’s reigns. Each gives a slight grunt of protest before the wagon slowly starts to roll down the trail towards Phandalin. "If you don’t show up in Phandalin in a few days I’m keeping all of the coin!"

Oddly enthusiastic Tobs, hands still bound, motions the rest of you to follow as the little goblin starts towards the woods. The trail, which leads off to the northwest, has obviously only been used by goblins as anyone taller than Gerbo spends at least part of their time pushing and shoving branches out of the way as they move forward.

The goblin never wavers from his task, being sure to stay within easy reach of Kerisha and calling the party to a stop whenever he thinks he hears a suspicious noise. Roughly 30 minutes into the hike Tobs comes to a complete stop and looks intently at the ground.

"Snare" he says. "Trap still set." He takes an overexaggerated step over the line set to trigger the trap just to ensure everyone else is able to see the location. Once everyone has passed the trap safely, he continues to lead the group down the trail until coming to another stop not more than ten minutes later.

"This one we walk around." he offers as he starts to walk through heavy brush besides the trail. The going here is a little bit rough, especially for those larger than a goblin, but everyone is able to make it through without issue.

"No more traps. Cave still a bit away."

About 30 minutes later you can hear the sounds of a stream bubbling off to the right and the trail opens up to a small clearing. A cave entrance is clearly visible, the stream flowing from the mouth, and a narrow dry path leading into the cave is on the opposite bank.

Tobs, who is starting to look a little nervous, peers up to Kerisha and speaks quietly.

"We are here. Two guards ahead." she tries as hard as she can to whisper.

Kerisha pulls out a small axe "Let Tobs go now?" She is happy to keep her end of the bargain with the goblin. He has lead them here safely, around traps, and has kept quiet. But she waits for the others to agree before cutting Tobs bindings.
Jan 12, 2021 9:16 pm
"Well, now what? Do we take out the guards? Are we able to sneak around?" Belanor whispers keeping his hand on the hilt of his sword.

"I've not done this, its kind of exciting."
Jan 13, 2021 3:22 am
Gerbo frowns at the entrance to the cave, then looks at Kerisha and Orel, and frowns again. After thinking for a minute, he whispers, "I can probably hit one of them, but both would be a bit much. Probably should make a plan to hit them both simultaneously, but we need to stay quiet. I don't think we can sneak past them with whole group, and I don't fancy finding myself in the midst of a cave full of angry goblins. Anyone got a plan to take out the second one? Maybe we could draw them both out here by us? If you draw them out, I can probably take them from behind."
Jan 13, 2021 3:22 pm
Orel nods to Kerisha when she asks if she should let Tobs go.

"I'm... not the stealthiest," he says, gesturing to his chain mail, "so I like the idea of drawing them here. Perhaps Kerisha could say something in Goblin to bring them over to us?"

Orel examines the river, trying to tell how wide/deep it is to see if the Goblins could make it across.

"So we bring them here? Perhaps we can knock them out? I've got a hammer we could do that with?"
Jan 13, 2021 9:23 pm
Kerisha puts the axe to Tobs bindings ready to release him when she has a thought. "Tobs call guards and run away. Tell them Glart injured. Draw them into our trap? Then Tobs free."

She waits for the agreement of the goblin before releasing his bindings and drawing her sword ready for the ambush.

Belanor searches though his satchel and pulls out his hammer. With a thumbs up Belanor is ready to bonk one of the goblin guards.

With his end of the bargain complete the little goblin sprints away, ducking into the undergrowth besides the trail you all followed to the cave.

Not more than a few seconds later two goblins come crashing through the thickets on the opposite side of the stream and start splashing their way across. The other goblin crosses the stream before finally looking up and realizing the situation it now finds itself. It quickly grabs for its sword and shield.

The smell is the first thing that hits Gerbo as he moves slowly towards the entrance of the cave. It's obvious just from the stench that the place is inhabited. Across the stream, to the rogue's right, he spots the blind that the guards used to keep watch. Old wooden planks have been used to flatten out some of the growth to give the guards a place to lie hidden in wait.

Peeking into the cave Gerbo can see that there are at least two side passages off of the main cave. The closer of the two has a few uneven stone steps which appear to lead into a cavern. The further climbs steeply updwards.

Walking quietly back to his compatriots, Gerbo relays what he saw, "Well, we know Tobs was telling the truth. It definitely smells like that Stinky fellow has been living in here for a while. I saw a couple passages in there, but didn't see anything directly telling us which was was the best one to take. If we're ready, I think it's time we headed in, unless anyone has anything else to say while we're outside? It'll be harder to communicate quietly while we're inside."

He tries to slap Belanor on the back to say "Buck up", but due to his size, it comes out closer to the small of his back. "Kerisha, you speak their language. Do you know anything about what we can expect in there? I don't know much of them." Besides the ones I've lifted coin off in squalid little bars, anyways. He lets out a short cackle at the thought.
Jan 20, 2021 4:19 pm
Orel slowly puts his Healer's Kit away, looking concernedly at Belanor. "Okay. It'll be alright, I'm sure," he says in a futile attempt at consolation.

"Good adventurers go left," he says tentatively in response to Gerbo, raising an eyebrow at Gerbo's small laugh.
Jan 20, 2021 4:57 pm
Kerisha finally washes some of the goblin blood and guts from her sword and armor, but leave the splatter on her face, thinking it gives her more of an intimidating presence.

She succeeds where Gerbo fails, and thumps Belanor on the back "You get used to it!" she proclaims, secretly hoping she makes him spew at the same time.

The goblin on the bridge continues to look towards the entrance of the cave but appears to be more bored than attentive. Suddenly the flickering of Orel's torch seems to refocus his attention. Belanor looks up to where Gerbo was firing. He starts gesturing with his hand. A small skeletal hand forms next to the goblin on the bridge. It points then slaps it across the face following through it latches to the goblins shoulder.

Gerbo warily watches the goblin as it falls. That was too close. "I forgot we have to carry a bright, shining beacon with us. Please try to keep it from giving us away again." he sneered. "I'll check it out. You can follow a little behind me, but please stay behind me until I have time to check for traps. If there are more gobbo's, feel free to engage, but I don't want something to get tripped and give us an issue."

Creeping up into the room on the left wall, Gerbo looks carefully at the entryway, and then peers into the room to see what he can see.
OOC:

Orel nods at Gerbo's comments and heads towards the back of the group, hopefully allowing Gerbo and others near the front to spot enemies before they notice the torch.
Jan 28, 2021 5:12 pm
The passage to the left is choked with rubble and has two steep escarpments separated by a ledge. The going is tough but Gerbo is able to make his way up the second escapement where the passageway tees into another slightly wider passageway. The smell is horrible; a mix of unwashed Goblins, rotten food, and something awful being cooked assaults the Rogue's senses.

To the right the new passageway heads off roughly twenty feet before bending further rightward.

To the left the passage quickly opens into a chamber where five Goblins are sitting around a small fire, cooking up some sort of Goblin delicacy. The smoke from the fire creates a stingy orange-colored haze throughout the room through which Gerbo can just make out a steep natural staircase at the southern end of the cavern.
OOC:
In what order is everyone going to ascend the passageway?

Jan 29, 2021 5:06 am
Gerbo looks bad at Kerisha behind him and nods, "Ready? I'll fire and you go in?" he whispers.

He draws his bow and squints at the goblins, looking for who seems to be the most dangerous.

Walking on the ledge between the two escarpments Kerisha can feel that the ground isn't quite as solid as it appeared. It starts to give way and quickly crumbles. It's remnants, and Kerisha, slide hard down the first escarpment, barely missing the others on the way down.
Through the smoke it's hard for Gerbo to differentiate between the Golbins huddled about the fire. He is caught a bit by surprise by the sound of debris falling behind him though.

Kerisha face scrapes along the rubble as she slides down the bank. Dragging herself to her feet at the bottom, she's not looking good. Not that she looked that great anyway covered in goblin blood and guts, but mix that with her own blood, bits of stone, dirt and grit and its not a pretty picture.

"Watch feet. It's slippy" she warns in a slightly dazed state.

Feb 1, 2021 9:54 pm
Belanor will take the torch and try to hold it steady for Orel.
After Orel bandages Kerisha. "I just can't anymore. Cleanicus upicus! Belanor whispers.
He waves his hand in a sweeping motion as if to brush dirt off.

OOC:

Feb 2, 2021 10:13 pm
Kerisha knows the drill, she's been in this situation many times before, and Orel has always been there to patch her up. It's why she values the companionship so much. She knows deep down that working as a team they can overcome any challenge. But sometimes its hard to go against natural instinct. She nods her thanks to Orel and gives Belanor a toothy grin as the blood stops dripping from her nose.
OOC:
Gerbo fires and we charge? Or sneak on past to see if we can find the leader? I'm happy with either
Feb 2, 2021 10:56 pm

Orel, noticing Gerbo taking a shot, quickly straps his shield to his arm and asks Belanor to hold the torch for the combat.
OOC:
Should we roll initiative? Also technically donning a shield is an action, but I think it's safe to assume Orel would do so if the party had agreed to attack.
Feb 3, 2021 8:54 pm
OOC:
I’m not sure what the party has agreed to at this point.

Right now I have Gerbo as the only one at the top of the steep passage launching an attack with everyone else still at the bottom of the debris filled passageway after Kerisha’s tumble.

If everyone wants to take a turn to get into some sort of position (and roll initiative!) before Gerbo’s attack, that’s cool - I’ll edit the post I have ready to go to reflect that.

If not the gnome is likely to have a lot of goblin ‘buddies’ coming after him in short order with out any support. :-)
Feb 3, 2021 9:05 pm
Kerisha tries again to climb the steep slope, this time she is more careful about her footing. Drawing her sword, she's ready for action. As soon as Gerbo releases the arrow, she will be in that room. Well, maybe at some point after he releases the arrow she'll make her way into the room.

With everyone in place, Gerbo let's loose with his arrow.

The impatient Gnome's arrow catches one of the smaller goblins in the rib cage just under its collarbone, ripping right through and exiting just below the opposite shoulder blade. The bewlidered creature drops its disgusting snack to the ground and rolls onto it back.

The others quickly scramble to gather their equipment and start to head towards Gerbo's position.

Struggling to the top of the passage, Belanor emerges just in time to see four Goblins charging in his direction. Reacting quickly he unleashes a bolt of fire, but slips as he is doing so causing the bolt to sail high and smash harmlessly into the far wall.
Intent on avenging their fallen comrade two of the Goblins (A & D) continue their rush forward with raised swords, while letting out a guttural battle cry. The first takes a wild slash at Gerbo who nimbly avoids the attack, but the second takes a more skilled swipe at the gnome, slicing into his arm (6HP).
Having just ducked out of way of what would have been a horrible ending to it's life, the Goblin facing Kerisha is still a bit stunned and makes a feeble attempt at a counter attack, swinging its sword weakly and missing its intended target by a large margin.

Gerbo's arrow slams into the goblin's left ear, causing it to half cartwheel, half flop to its right, sprawling the ugly thing hard onto the ground.
OOC:
QuantumRiot is free to describe Kerisha's incoming damage.

Kerisha is engaged with Goblin E.

Kerisha is up.

Kerisha is so determined to strike down another foe she misses the incoming attack. She is focused on the eyes of the gobo in front of her and takes a slash across the ribs.

She roars, partly in pain, but mostly at herself for being so foolish, so unfocused. Another wound to be patched up. Another scar that shows a hard fought battle.

Kerisha drives her sword down towards the offending goblin

Rolls

Greatsword - (1d20+4)

(19) + 4 = 23

Greatsword damage - (2d6+2)

(23) + 2 = 7

Feb 16, 2021 10:59 pm
Although her intense determination is punished with a new wound, it is also rewarded with a freshly sliced goblin as Kerisha's huge sword easily cuts into her foe. With the last of the Goblins sorted everyone has just a few seconds to catch their collective breath before the irritatingly familiar sound of a goblin's voice rings out.

"We at truce. Or human dies!"

Up on the ledge, to the south of the room, a large Goblin forces a man closer to the edge and down to his knees. He presses his sword against the man's throat and slides the blade just enough along the man's neck to produce a trickle of blood.

"Truce?"

The man, eyes only half open, struggles to lift his head in an attempt to see who the goblin is talking to. It's quite obvious the man has been beaten and is now struggling to maintain consciousness, but still manages to utter a few strained words.

"Don't... trust him!"

Orel tosses a glance at Gerbo and Belanor, mouthing "Shoot."

Then he slightly lifts both arms in a gesture that somewhat resembles surrender, without moving his shield so far from his body so as to be a target.
OOC:
Not sure if we're still in initiative or what, but if applicable Orel will take the dodge action and/or step away from the goblins next to him if it doesn't risk an opportunity attack. If anybody attempts to make some sort of social check on the Goblin, Orel may try and provide the help action as appropriate.
Feb 17, 2021 9:39 pm
OOC:
the gobbos that were on you were downed.
OOC:
I don't really have anything good. Preso their swords clean and in good repair, also mending? 1 more spell slot currently.
I was hoping to save that sleep for the big bad the gobo was talking about earlier.
Feb 18, 2021 3:50 am
OOC:
Do we recognize the human?
Gerbo, seeing Orel's instruction attempts to duck out of sight into the entryway, readying an arrow. Breathing heavily, he gets ready to take the shot, trying to remember the approximate positioning of the goblin.

Popping out, it seems his memory was somewhat off, as he struggles to line up the shot accurately, but releases, knowing he has probably already doomed the prisoner.
OOC:
I assumed a straight up roll. Modify as you see fit.

With Gerbo's arrow well off the mark, the captive uses the last of his strength to try and strike out against his captor, but to no avail. The goblin pushes the man over the ledge and he lands face down with a muffled thud, dust billowing from the ground where he now lays. The goblin quickly darts to the backside of the stalagmite on the upper ledge out of sight.
OOC:
Through the hazy smoke and dim lighting the man who now lies on the ground was not recognizable.

Let's start with everyone taking a turn (and rolling initiative as you do). The goblin is on a ledge that is roughly 10' high, the only access being a rough set of stairs to your right. (See the previous post for the map.)

Kerisha is just about to start removing goblin fingers for a new necklace, when she is rudely interrupted. On one knee she looks up to see the human held at the goblins mercy. Before she can act, the human is falling through the air. Her grip tightens on her sword.

"You have no honor"

She rushes up the slope to confront the goblin, wanting another finger for her necklace.
OOC:
Kerisha trips and falls, she clearly struggles with slopes

As Belanor shimmies along the face of the ledge he gets his first good look at the face down captive. Beaten, bruised, and unconscious the man is breathing heavily and does not appear to be in good shape.

Medicine - (1d20+1)

(1) + 1 = 2

Feb 23, 2021 2:57 am
Flipping the captive over to attempt to help, Belanor finally gets a good look at the man. It's Sildar Hallwinter, the human warrior that was escorting Gundren to Phandelver. He's in pretty bad shape, and despite Belanor's fumbling attempt to wrap a few of his wounds, Sildar slowly opens his eyes and his breathing grows stronger.
OOC:
EDIT: I can just picture Sildar waking up... "Give me those bandages, Son, and let me show you how it's done!". :-)

The goblin is hiding behind one of the stalagmites on the ledge.

Gerbo would have to get into a better position to fire at him.
Belanor tried and failed to stabilze the captive.

Death Save for Sildar - (1d20)

(20) = 20

Feb 23, 2021 9:24 pm
Seeing the goblin duck behind a stalagmite, Gerbo moves over to attempt to get a clearer shot. "Whatever you do, don't let him get away!" Gerbo half-shouts to Kerisha.
OOC:
I'm not looking to follow up the stairs. Can I get a shot without following up the stairs? If not, I'll ready a shot for if he leaves cover.
Feb 23, 2021 9:30 pm
Kerisha grunts in response to Gerbo. She has no intention of letting the gobo get away...Her goblin finger necklace is nowhere near complete.
Feb 24, 2021 3:54 pm
Orel starts towards Sildar, but, seeing him stabilize, rushes towards the goblin with a dash action.
OOC:
I'm not sure exactly where Orel is on the map, but it seems 60 feet should be enough to get from the entrance of the chamber to wherever to goblin may be.

[Goblin Attack Roll]

(New band name!!)

Rolls

Goblin Attack / Damage - (1d20+4, 1d6+2)

1d6+2 : (3) + 2 = 5

Feb 24, 2021 6:30 pm
Rushing up the stairs and across the ledge Orel finds himself face to face with the goblin who dumped Sildar over the ledge. Waiting to strike, the creature slashes out with its sword towards the onrushing fighter, but its attack is easily avoided.
OOC:
The goblin is hiding behind one of the stalagmites on the ledge.

Kerisha is up.

Gerbo would have to get into a better position to fire at him.
Belanor is with Sildar.
Kerisha is at the top of the stairs and has the goblin in sight.

Distracted by Gerbo, Orel manages to rush past Kerisha and gets to the goblin first. Slightly annoyed, she sets off in pursuit.

She feels right at home fighting alongside Orel. The two work together to surround the goblin, striking out at any opportunity the other can create. Kerisha takes advantage of a clean opening while the goblin is engaged with Orel.

OOC:
I'd listen to a song or 3 from that band.
"Oh good your alive! Can you walk?"
Belanor will attempt to loose the bindings around Sildar and attempt to help him hobble out of the cavern if able.
Feb 24, 2021 9:51 pm
With flawless coordination Orel is able to goad the goblin into taking another quick strike in his direction giving Kerisha the opportunity to drive home her attack. The blade of her greatsword whistles through the air and connects with the Goblin's back, ripping through armor, flesh, and then bone.

The creature never stood a chance.
"Yes, I think I can walk. Give me a moment please."

Sildar, while beaten and obviously in pain, is a proud man and does his best to mask his suffering. He takes a few deep breaths and slowly sits up.

"A fine rescue, my friends. You have my thanks."

He makes an attempt to get to his feet, but thinks better of it and remains seated.

"I need to get to Phandalin and see if I can determine where exactly Gundren is being held."

He slowly continues on, telling of how he and Gundren were ambushed and then separated. Gundren being taken to Cragmaw Castle as ordered by someone calling themselves the Black Spider. Sildar does not know the location of the castle, but has a feeling someone in Phandalin just might.

"An escort to Phandalin would be appreciated. Of course ridding this cave of goblin scum and their bugbear leader could prove useful as well. As you are all more aware of the current situation within the cave than I, I propose you take some time to discuss your options before we take either course of action."

i mean we just got here so in theory he would know more about the cave then us XDD
gods! How dare they take my client! Then I propose we go save him at this Castle. Belanor will presto some of Sildar's wounds, clothes etc.. looking like 5gp is better then looking like 50sp even though you feel about 500cp.

"I'm afraid we don't really know much else about this cavern other then it's foul odiousness. I do think it would be wise for someone to do something about the current threat but I would like to focus more on saving my client.
Belanor puts his hand to his chin and begins to mumble. "Well if they don't take care of the 'threat' then whats to stop them from getting stronger while we may be gone and before someone else is able to fix this situation. Could they regroup that quickly? ... ..."
He continues in a train of thought in mumblings before hes encompassed by a mass stank cloud.

"I do think we should probably speculate outside out of this filth." Belanor adds coughing.
Feb 25, 2021 2:43 am
Gerbo lowers his bow and attempts to retrieve arrows he had shot earlier. Looking at the goblins, he sees bedraggled creatures living in filth and squalor. Their lot in life doesn't give them the right to bully others, but I can't say I'd act any different if I lived here. he thought. Ah, well, we do what we have to to protect the honest folks of the world, I suppose. "I think we should take out the rest quickly. We don't want to leave enemies at our backs when we move on."
OOC:
I believe I shot 3 arrows in this section of the cave. Can I retrieve them?

OOC:
You can always retrieve half (rounded down) of any ammunition used in an encounter.
Feb 25, 2021 10:01 pm
Chalking up another goblin kill, Kerisha begins collecting fingers, one from each of her kills, to form her necklace. Collecting a trophy from her kills has become a habit. A way to showcase her battle prowess. At the mention of a Bugbear leader, Kerisha's ear pick up... a greater challenge to overcome.
Feb 26, 2021 10:21 pm
Orel furrows his brow. "Sildar, was the bugbear leader also ordered by the Black Spider? Perhaps we could capture this bugbear and get some information that way. If not... as unpopular as I know this idea will be," he glances at Kerisha, "I think time might be of the essence here, and we don't have too much of a reason to stay here and wipe out the rest. We can point other adventurers in this area, but I can only patch up so many injuries."
Feb 27, 2021 8:25 pm
"From what I've gathered listening to my captors is that this Black Spider is a newcomer on the scene, one that both the ruler of this particular tribe, and the leader of this band fear. Klarg, the Bugbear in question, was ordered to grab Gundren and his map, and send both to King Grol at the castle."

Sildar takes a deep breath and gingerly gets to his feet.

"The Rockseeker brothers have long sought the lost Wave Echo Cave and have just recently discovered an entrance. The map that was stolen contains the whereabouts of this entrance. Who ever this Black Spider is, he seems to be aware of the importance of the cave."

Walking slowly among the selection of freshly killed goblins as he talks, the tall, older gentlemen selects the most serviceable weapon and shield he can find. He gives his newly acquired scimitar a few test swings

"Whatever actions you decide to take, I will do my part to help your efforts. Questioning Klarg may provide us with the location of Gundren's whereabouts, but I have several contacts in Phandalin that may be able to help as well."
OOC:
I've been updating the Guide Threads in the forum from time to time, and just added some information about Wave Echo Cave for your reading pleasure.

Kerisha grumbles at the suggestion of leaving without taking on the leader of this poor excuse for a tribe. She's an orc of action, not decisions, so will follow the orders of her companions. But she really does want a piece of that bugbear...Maybe the fur
Mar 2, 2021 3:37 am
"Fair enough. I suppose if we kept pushing until all the baddies were gone, we'd never get around to the "important" stuff, eh? Perhaps the bloody nose we gave this clan will keep them off the road for a time." Gerbo toys with an arrow as he looks around impatiently. "In any case, I think it's time we moved on. Don't want to get caught unawares." With that, he starts strolling toward the entrance to the cave, peeking out to see if there are any goblins out and about in the main passageway, yet.
