Yeah, Amos has never given details of his issue to anyone since leaving the monastery. So while you can clearly tell something ails him mentally, he would never speak of it. Even if anyone were to witness an episode, he will just ignore any probing questions and insist that "it's nothing" and try to change the subject.
I guess when I mentioned your paladin training allowing you some insight into his darkness, I was stuck on old school paladin being holy warriors, which I guess isn't' necessarily always true in 5e.
