GeneralET Character Discussions

Feb 15, 2021 2:28 pm
This thread is for discussing GeneralET's character please do not post anything here that is not related to GeneralET's character and yes collaborating with GeneralET is consider fair postings.

Please make your rolls in here and outline what your are doing so that I can give you feedback on the world. Do note though this game borrows heavily from the Forgotten Realms so you can use information from that setting to outline your background.

Okay I am assuming you do not know how to select the Advanced button to add dice rolls to your post -- but considering these are mediocre results I am comfortable with letting them stand as is -- however you should try the Advanced button and Add a Basic roll just to get familiar with it.

A roll done using the Advanced + Add (Basic) would look as follows
Be sure to fill in the reason and the dice you want Roll-ed

Rolls

Reason - (3d6)

(361) = 10

Feb 15, 2021 4:08 pm
ok I just pasted what came out from the tool dice roller...

I'm working on the character, though I'm also at work.
Thank for the tips I will try that.

Test stats:

No rush on creating the character -- but if you can get it done in a day or two I can slip you in without much issue

But also keep in mind I work with players to help them get a character that they want to play so if have an idea that does not quite fit the restrictions of the guidelines thus far just let me know and we will see what can be done.
Feb 15, 2021 4:29 pm
I was planning on going with what the stats were going to be.
So far it will most probably a Rock Gnome - Wizard.

Not sure how Technomancy will work but I'll figure it out sometime :)

I have altered Technomancy for Artificers which is outlined within the character creation and/or house rules. Basically it is more technomancy now and less techno-magic-something-or-other --- or it (IMO) is better themed and more focused on that theme.

From what I could see the tiny clockwork device I have access to, could be of any nature as long as it's roughly the size of a fist?
Feb 15, 2021 8:57 pm
Hey I was planning on selecting the inheritor background from the Sword Coast Adventure Guide.

I was thinking it could be something that was handed to me by my tutor (on behalf of my family I never knew) at an academy of magic or some tattoos/markings that appears at my comming of age or during an unexpected event.

This piece of inheritance could direct me towards the Far Reach for some reason.

I don't know if you would prefer I pick somthing and you make it 'fit' or you would rather hand down the inheritance and it will be for me to make something out of it (which I think could be cool)

Here are the traits and bonds I've rolled

Traits
- I get bored easlily
- I judge people by their action not their words
Ideals
- Tyrants must not be allowed to oppress the people
bonds
- I have a family, but I have no idea where they are. One day, I hope to see them again.
Flaws
- I have a weakness for the vices of the city, especially hard drink.

Once I get your feeedback I'll work on a more official background and try to tie it up to some people of the group.
Feb 15, 2021 9:22 pm
I kind of like to get the players take and/or desires when it comes to the various bits of ones background -- so if you have some thoughts or ideas of what you want the inheritance to be I would be interested in hearing them which I can then play with and see what we come up with.

So your character does have a family, just they do not know where they are --- why is that --- how did they get separated --- who might this family be?? All questions you should consider answering when finalizing your background

** That part is not known by my PC **
Unbeknownst to him Belgar'ath had been designated as a sacrifice to a evil entity by a cult.
Learning that his mother fled the town and left Belgar'ath in the custody of the Academy of magic in Waterdeep.
** ------------------------------- **

Background:
Belgar'ath grew up within the walls of the magic academy in Silverymoon, he never knew who his family was and as such he had been performing
duties for various wizards of the academy to cover for his lodging.
He was not given much attention and was all too eager to pull some puny pranks on the few wizards unfriendly to him.
That was until he started to display some talent for magic which point he became a pupil of the academy and formally started his studies
of the arcanes. While he was assisting an elder wizard for a trivial summoning, a demon unexpectedly appeared.
Upon seeing Belgar'ath he spoke hellish words

"YOU! Your mother thought she could hide you from my master.
She is still paying the price for her foolishness.
Seek us where the snake meets the Wyrm, then perhaps my master will show mercy to her"

Before disappearing, a strange symbol appeared on the gnome's chest as if it was carved by a burning claw.
Against the advices of his tutors at the academy, Balgar'ath packed his things and left for the Far reach in search of answers.

What do you think of this background?
Feb 16, 2021 6:51 pm
Regarding the equipement are there official source for the item price (especially magic items)
I assume that with around 750GP to spend we are expected to have at least a magic item...
Feb 16, 2021 11:20 pm
If you look within the House Rules you will find guidelines for special materials and masterworking for both Armor and Weapons and with a single weapon you can exceed that 750 gp limit so no, permanent magic items are not on the list of acquirable items -- also the pluses to AC, To Hit, and Damage are not based on magic anymore they are based on Masterworking -- magic armor/weapons actually have some kind of magic associated with them -- now you can acquire potions, scrolls, dusts, ointments, and other consumable magic items but not permanent ones.
Feb 17, 2021 12:42 am
And for the background?
Feb 17, 2021 1:06 am
Ah I missed that -- nice write up -- let me mull that over a bit and see if there is anything I might augment it with.
Feb 17, 2021 3:28 pm
As a wizard I'm not proficient with armor and weapons.
it will most likely be spent more on component and such.
I might spend some money on scrolls but the prices seems to be vary much. Any indication on that?
For the brazier required for the find familiar to only thing I could find was here https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Brazier
Any hint on that also? / Should I consider I already have one summoned?

Regarding the carrying capacity do I reduce the weight of items such as backpack, weapons, etc.
Or only armors/clothings. In all cases I round down, up or closest ?

Sorry yes the Brazier costs as much as a Hooded Lantern and weighs 3 lbs I will put a section in Home Rules to cover the base price -- not the current price of various items not listed within the PHB

Also you can purchase Masterwork items -- a Masterwork Quarterstaff Arcane Focus would be rather expensive if taken to a full +2/+2 and you can use other weapons. Further Masterwork can be used to enhance other non-magical features or remove/reduce certain specific aspects.

Also consider a 1st Level Scroll cost 100gp and it costs 50gp to put it into your spell book so for 150gp per spell you could acquire quite a few Ritual Spells (and/or other spells) outside the normal spells that you start with.

Also you can acquire packs of additional material components for the Find Familiar spell (1 lbs each) that you can carry with you in case you wish to cast the spell again later on. You are assumed (if you take Find Familiar as a normal starting spell not a resource acquired one) to have a familiar already summoned.

Quick question what speed and knockback is it refferring to:

Partial Dark Wood : Reduce weight by 25%, increase To Hit by +1, reduce Speed by 25%, reduce Knock Down by 1 Step, reduce Required Strength by 2, increase Required Dexterity by +1

As I understand it I could have a customized arcane focus staff
base 5gp 4lbs

Masterwork +2/+2 -> 100gp
Dark Wood -> 50gp, -1lbs
Silvered -> 5gp

Hence a 155gp staff weighting 3lbs

???

Should be ready to submit soon :)

Eventually the weapons will have Speeds and Knockback but currently I have not added those in yet -- but you generally do not benefit from making a Staff from Darkwood since they are not all that heavy to begin with.

So Masterworking a Arcane Focus Staff to +2/+2 for 100gp and Silvering it (+75%) for 75gp is about the most you can do with that. However you might want to carry an extra spell focus in case you lose your staff for some reason.

However if you really want to make it out of Darkwood it looks like this:

Arcane Focus Staff (5 gp) x Darkwood (x10) x Masterwork (+2/+2) (20) = 1,000 gp
+ Silvering (75%)(750 gp) = 1,750gp

Note to alleviate future confusion though I have update the guidelines to clarify these points -- sorry they were not clear enough

I submitted my character for approval a few minutes ago.

However, I saw that Fairborne seems to be back in the play.
Are you ok running this game as a 5 PC group?
Feb 18, 2021 8:18 pm
Yes it holds up to 5 no issues optimal is 4 to 5 as long as everyone stays active we should be just fine
Feb 18, 2021 8:20 pm
Good !

I submitted the character. Should I just wait for you to introduce the character to the group in some ways? or post in when approved?

You are part of the group and you could have been there all along or like the other character arrive late due to something be out of place or some other detail you needed to take care of prior to joining up with the others.
Feb 22, 2021 6:32 am
Hey GeneralET I was looking at your character and I have to ask where did you get the price for this?

Keoghtom's Ointment (2) 10gp 1lbs

I ask because it is considered an Uncommon Consumable Magic Item which means it would have a minimum cost of 101gp pre-game but would most likely cost more than that since it would require at least a 2nd level spell as well as a 1st level spell cast at 2nd level to equal its effects. That would mean as a minimum we would be talking 150gp for the 1st level spell at 2nd level and 200gp for the 2nd level spell for a total of 350 gp for a single dose pre-game.

Also this is how I would go about figuring out what the base market value was for any item. Then in-game this would be affected also by its rarity as well as its permanency (aka permanent items cost much more than consumables).
Feb 22, 2021 12:09 pm
You are right it should be at least 100gp per bottle from what I saw. I probably missed a 0 while typing it. I'll recompile everything and adjust with the new price to make sure it fits the budget.

When you say a single dose, you mean the 1d4+1 as in the item description?

When you talked about background, I don't see inheritor in the character creation guideline, do I look at the right place?
Feb 22, 2021 4:02 pm
Oh okay sorry I missed the Inheritor will work on that one today

No when I say 1 dose I mean one single does that magic item in the book would be more expensive. However, I have been mulling of the cost of consumables as what the guidelines do does not make sense.

1st Level Spell Consumable Potion costs 50gp --- but a 1st Level Spell Consumable Scroll costs 100gp --- this is inconsistent and makes calculating the value of various items extremely difficult.

I have been considering taking the base prices figured by translating the powers to Spells and Levels and for Consumables and reducing it by half -- this would cause a major refund to a handful of players as that would mean a first level Scroll would only cost 50gp plus the normal 50gp to put into ones spell book. As such I am going to go this route to make things consistent.

Thus again :

.... 1st Level Scroll 50gp plus 50gp to put it into your spell book if you want

.... Keoghtom Ointment costs 175gp per single does and the jar that weighs 1 lbs can hold up to 5 does or you can get each dose within a separate container that equates to a vial -- so while smaller than a potion vial it has all the aspects of one

Note the magic item which contains as few as 2 and as many as 5 doses would cost a lot more and thus in essence break its category but I am okay with that

If you would like to help me and could go through and make a list of the consumable magic items that are not scrolls that would be awesome but not required ;)
Feb 22, 2021 10:54 pm
I'll try to go through those items.
Can't guarantee it will be done overnight, but I slowly add those items following the new guidelines you provided.
Feb 22, 2021 11:40 pm
Great and thanks -- so if you can just post that list here that work the best. Further if you will start at the beginning and word towards the end I will start at the end and work towards the beginning -- posting what I find here.
Feb 22, 2021 11:52 pm
Perfect.
I assume we use the DMG as a main source?
Anything else?
Feb 22, 2021 11:55 pm
Well mostly just the DMG, but if there is anything in SCAG or XGtE those might be viable just need to keep them separate -- I will focus on the DMG though -- oh btw the Javelin of Lightning is considered a consumable unless they changed how it works.

And I will be just editing this message going forward.

Consumable Magic Items

Just to let you know I updated my item list based on our discussion.
Mar 2, 2021 8:22 pm
Thanks for the update however it would have been easier if you had posted it here or at least used your character to make the post then I have a fast link to your character sheet or the information is here and I do not need to look there directly. Just a future note.

Further I have glanced over it and it seems okay will check math a bit later but no worries here if that helps
