DS-Beta-3641 One is a planet with 0.84 time the Earth's diameter closely orbiting a red dwarf star. It has a bound rotation which means that the sun stays above the same spot each day and that one side of the planet experiences permanent daylight while the other side is shrouded in constant darkness.
While the equator regions are too hot to support higher life forms the regions at higher latitudes have subtropical weather which allows life to thrive.
The weather there is rather hot, humid and very windy. Every one to three days there is a large rain storm.
Those regions are covered in a dense jungle of purple colored plant life. In general the plants have a thick trunk and are rather low with the highest plants being only 3-4 metres (10-13 feet). Most animals are herbivores and the few predators that are present are not large enough to hunt humanoids or too scared.
The atmosphere is breathable with an oxygen content of 19.76%. About half of the planet is covered in oceans which are domainated by algae that have the same purple colour as the land-based plant life.
Recently ancient ruins of a pre-spaceflight civilization were discovered on the planet. While ruins of pre-spaceflight civilizations are not unheard of the process of discovery was remarkable.
On another planet (CY-Tetha-7767 Three) ruins of a civilization were found. The technological level of that civilization was comparable to the Incans or Aztecs on Earth. An inscription was found that resembled a three dimensional star chart and some star systems were marked with a word that was translated as "inhabitated".
It was pretty unbelievable that this civilization could know of other inhabitated star systems but DS-Beta-3641 was checked nevertheless and surprisingly ruins resembling the one on CY-Theta-7767 Three were found.
The sector government granted a large scale research mission to tap into the mysteries of this civilization that at one hand had neither electricity, combustion engines or precision engineering but on the other hand boasted star charts and maybe even an interplanetary empire.
DS-Beta-3641 One Alpha is the main research camp with about ten thousand inhabitants headed by the chief archeologist Dr. Petra Salmberg. A satellite camp near a large temple structure was established about a month before the pirates landed on the planet.
