The Rhyhold
A dark forest of thick canopies and thicker branches, of fairy rings, strewn broken boulders, uneven ground, hills and ridges, and numberless hidden valleys and glens. Of villages not cities, of orchards not farms.
To the far north of the forest, a towering chain of mountains like the teeth of the gods. To the south, a vast endless plain. The forest stretches to the east and west, but it is only here that is called the Rhyhold, a stretch of forest between two great rivers, 50 miles thick and a 150 miles wide.
Callibog
The village of
Callibog, nearly properly a town, is where we'll start. Callibog is the home of the seven sisters, witches and soothsayers, but the town itself is a community on its own, with a market day attended by many in the area. The town is run by a khan, named
Jerham. There are perhaps two hundred permanent residents, and foresters from the area triple that size on market day.
Numentor
An ancient keep on a craggy top north of Callibog,
Numentor nearly peeks out from the dense canopy, and is home to a clan of crafters. The finest manufactured goods in the Rhyhold are produced in Numentor.
Uelsach
A treehouse town to the west of Callibog,
Uelsach is home to scores of small families, making their homes high above the forest floor. Uelsach is populated nearly by half by Rhydan, of the climbing and flying varieties.
Sandholme
A dry spot in a swamp,
Sandholme sits in a treacherous
Witchbreath swamp between Callibog and the great southern plain. This barrier keeps travel to the south extremely rare. Sandholme sits on a dry finger of sandstone that juts into the swamp, and is the home of a great variety of medicines and illicit drugs and poisons.
Torto and Hortof
Two separate towns, separated by a wide chasm,
Torto and
Hortof were once the same town until a cataclysm rent it in to. Travel between the two towns is nearly impossible, save for the well respected flying Rhydan that make the cliffs of the chasm their home. For those who cannot fly, every attempt at building a bridge has failed and so the folk are required to travel to a safe crossing place, the journey taking nearly half a day.
