I'm starting a new game for Ravenloft (non-Adventure League non Curse of Strahd printed adventure)

YOU DO NOT NEED to know anything about the setting, or 5e. New players are welcome.
It is a fantasy gothic horror setting. It will be dark and not always suitable for young players.

DESCRIPTION Discover the world of gothic horror as something even more vile consumes the dark powers. Will the demiplane of dread become something far worse. Can the characters escape this new hell?

CHARACTER GENERATION INFO Your character is a commoner who is consumed by the mists after committing a crime. You will start as a ZERO level character w/ point by stats. Using the variant table, but with only 24 total points to spend. You will choose a background, but not a class. Your starting proficiency bonus will be +1. Come up with a back story and what the crime was you committed. Characters can be from any setting, including historic Earth. Keep in mind demihuman races have a difficult time in Ravenloft because there are mostly human community who are superstitious xenophobic and most have never seen a non-human.

The game will hop around from domain to domain getting a good tour of the Domains of Dread

I'm thinking of a character who was some kind of criminal kingpin, but who is pretty average without his organisation there to back him up. Would an evil alignment be a problem?

I'm looking at creating a lowly bottomfeeder type that acted as a runner for gang. Ended up taking the fall for a job gone wrong.

@FlugLichKeiten. Evil alignment would be OK as long as you have a good motivation to work with a group and even be put aside your selfish nature to help the group. Might even consider transitioning alignment during game. Think about what experiences might transform the character. Moral decisions and concepts of right and wrong are always a big part of a ravenloft game that will be especially true with this game.

@Skuhtulhu. That works fine.

@all. The character doesn't need to be a hardened criminal. Could be a small one time slip or aft of desperation. It could be you are guilty about something that isn't actually a legal issue.

I've always been intrigued by the Ravenloft setting, but have unfortunately never gotten to play much at all in it. I also like the idea of playing through the events that transform a regular Joe into a level 1 adventurer. Sounds like a lot of fun!

My initial character idea is a forester/county sheriff who made a living maintaining his lord's woodlands and occasionally running off poachers and outlaws. He was out on a ranging with the lord's son and nephew (both teenaged) when they encountered a fearsome beast, and during their attempt to flee he chose to let the beast take the boys to save himself. He was on the run from the lord's search parties with hounds at his heels when he became lost in the mists.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. He would be the son of a real crime boss and all of his life people have deferred to him, even feared him, because of his name. This organisation would be similar to the cosa nostra, in that members would live by a strict code and any infractions against other members of the brotherhood would be punishable by death. As a result of all of this he considers his 'family' (in the Mafiosi sense) to be sacred. When thrust into this new setting and separated from his old comrades it wouldn't take him long to latch onto the new group as his family.

Up until this point he would never have questioned his received (from his father) version of morality because he would have been sheltered from the true consequences. Although he has seen, and probably caused, dead bodies, he has only really seen the effects of violent death on the ones left behind in the context of his own family. Outsiders are therefore almost seen as sub-human, or at least the idea that they could have loved ones who mourn them is never really considered. So what I'm saying is with his sudden wrench to a new setting and context he would be ripe for a change in morality, given viable demonstrations of a 'better way'.

//Edit: I have just looked at the game screen and saw that there is only one space left. I'll withdraw in favour of Krypt since I'm already in loads of games. Have fun!

@krypt. I like the idea. I think it will work well

@flug. I would love to have a low number of players for this one to make some deep experiences and dug deep on some rp character development. Let me see what things look like.

Really, it's no problem. I'm happy to sit this one out.

Hey Flug, you were here first! :( I didn't know it was a 4-player game either and that I'd be butting in on the last spot (assuming I got in, that is). Sorry!

Trust me, I'm currently involved in eight games. That's enough for now. Just enjoy.

Ah, full up already? Shame. I wanted to learn 5th edition, and doing it in one of my favorite settings ever would have been awesome. Next time maybe.
