Edit 2: Background:
A little over 750 years ago, the various denominations of the Abrahamic religions attempted to work out their differences and come together under a unified worship of the same god. They worked tirelessly to correct any contradiction in their various holy texts, often explaining those away as human error creeping in throughout the ages and corrupting the infallible word of God. Those few resisting this change were silenced and quietly removed... This eventually led to the birth of the of Church of the Maker of All.
As the years passed, the Church of the Maker of All evolved like many religions do, and eventually splintered off into various interpretation of the holy texts. The irony that this fusion of religions which was meant to stamp off any incorrect interpretation of the holy texts eventually led to a splintering of interpretations was not lost on the church which originally attempted to violently stamp out those new denominations as they cropped up. It would seem it is humanity's fate to disagree on everything, even something they agreed on not disagreeing about...
It did succeeded it stomping out many, but a few fell between the cracks and thrived, often requiring their members to flee to other factions for their own safety. Jerome is a member of one such splinter group: The Brotherhood of Mankind. After all, did not the holy texts told us we were all descendants from Adam and Eve? Does science also does not tell us that humanity migrated out of the African continent? The Brotherhood of Mankind believes all of humanity to be related by blood, that every single person is the brother and sister—if not in a literal biological sense then at least in a deeply spiritual level—to every other single person or Darst and it's many colonies.
The Brotherhood preaches peace, cooperation, compassion, tolerance, and forgiveness. It is also one of the rare denominations of the Church of the Maker of All which does not hate the strange aliens which approached mankind. Those aliens approached humanity with a message of peace. They did so, trying to look like us. If they wanted to harm us, they would have done so by now. So the Brotherhood believes the main church to be misguided in that regard.
Jerome was born on Darst and raised among a very religious family. It only made sense for him to join the priesthood of the Brotherhood when he came of age. He married his high school sweetheart Cecille, and together they had three beautiful children: Montel, Janice, and William, who in turn grew up and gave Jerome and Cecille grandkids of their own. William even followed in his father's footsteps and joined teh Brotherhood as well. When Cecille was diagnosed with a brain tumor 8 years ago, it came as a great shock to the Huxleys. They tried to work through those troubling times, but sadly, Cecille lost her battle with cancer about 3 years ago, which brought a sort of crisis of faith to Jerome who slid into a severe depression. As he was starting to climb out of his depression, he was approached by the Men-in-Black for a mission in space... It would seem like the Maker of All had some plans for Jerome...

Though I wonder if a someone like a vet would be working at the colony. There wouldn't be pets around, and alien life is not found yet. Doctor maybe perhaps. What do you think?
Edit: Maybe, you could be a people-treating doctor, but also has knowledge about animals and has a tranquilliser gun as self-defense.
Wild tangent, how bout animal or bird scouts mapping areas around the compound that are on recall and checked out, if they drop dead we know Daaanger Zone dead body is recovered and the sensor array is checked for compound elements at the location. (Yes last part song in big band hair voice)
Hmm, "canaries" that are used for "less than safe" planetary exploration. That's a unique idea. I'll think about that.
And the secret pet thing... We'll see about that...
Seriously, I looked over the background thread. The Union seems like the faction most likely to have secret pets, though the corporate overlords of the Industrial Alliance might also fit that bill.
The United Advancement sounds militaristic, and might be the ones who use canaries to test out new environments. Also a likely faction to have a secret bioweapon project that might employ veterinarians.
If the Maker's Men have any ties to real-world, ancient earth religions, they may have need of animals for sacrifice. Many African and African Diaspora religions, Judaism—historically at least—and Islam all have animal sacrifices, for instance. They may keep and care for animals for such purposes, as typically you don't want to sacrifice a poorly treated animal, as that makes the gods mad.
The Industrial Alliance also seems like a good candidate for a secret biotech project involving live animal testing or some such.
Should we pick one or more of the above? Or just leave it undefined for now until it's narratively appropriate?
There could be other things your character may not be involved with or have knowledge of, so those things can be for later.
I did roll that "enigmatic" personality trait, though—maybe I'll lean into that after all by saying that whatever his employment is or has been (maybe he's been let go for some reason), he's not supposed to talk about it due to some NDA or death threats or something. :)
Edit: and that's an... electrician? Welp, time to brush up old textbooks, that's definitely not my strongest area of knowledge. XD Look at this guy's muscles tho.
Also, Wolfish Eyes and Treacherous! Any objections if I downplay Treacherous into somehing more co-op friendly? Creative interpretation: the character tends to hesitate before fighting for others and unlikely to be the first to trust, but doesn't outright betray anyone... just tends towards selfishness. What do you think? I'm not sure I want (and can) play a traitor, but an anti-social grumpy electrician - sure! Or he might be a compulsive liar, maybe?

Speaking of, would clawed gauntlets be medium or large melee weapon? Technically you can throw them, but I doubt it'd be effective. XD (Yup, I'm leaning into that Wolfish Eyes roll. It's going to be one scary electrician.)

And he wouldn't think too long about which particular group (Alliance, Advancement, Maker's Men...) he inadvertly assists, since he has no opinions about them or politics between them. Except Union, as he has relatives here and probably wishes to not come into contact with them if he can avoid it. But otherwise, no faction loyalty whatsoever. XD

So, your background and items. My setting is not as advanced as the game rules have it be. There will not be "star maps" and scales like that. However, I can change it to be a bit smaller, yet still a Navigator.
You could be a ship pilot of sorts that have experience riding on/driving the space ships for delivery of resources and stuff between colonising worlds. Do you want your region of work to only be in the local star system? Or do you want to have the experience of having gone to the other star systems? If you choose the latter, you will have some other interesting knowledge that you may or may not want to keep secret.

As for background, I was thinking something along the lines of ‘extreme method actor’? But I don’t know if that would be too campy for your setting.

@Honor_Over_All Won't be too campy. Some dark humour of a method actor dealing with cosmic horrors would be in theme!
@microtheMacroBear I'll offer some options.
1) You could be a regular technician. Similar to one other PC.
2) You could be an inventor, designing simple robot models. The AI will be like "near modern" standard, nothing too advanced.
3) You could reroll it(hp and 02 dont need to change)or choose from the list.
I'm going to roll for a new background. Can't let that opportunity pass me by.

Background:
Declan used to be a playboy. Life came easy to him. However after running up a massive gambling debt, his family disowned him. The next few years were hard and he was forced to grow up. Eventually, he managed to find work as a space docker.
He's been doing that ever since.
He carries totems of his former life, a casino credit token fashioned around his neck on a metal chain and a gold plated pistol he wears in a dockers clutch.
Rightly or wrongly, he blames the universe for his lot in life and has resigned himself to whatever fate will be.

With Abdullah Al-Jabbir being a movie actor seeking to be a good method actor, he is offered to promote the fast developing space recolonising efforts. He will be one of the few VIP guests sent to visit the space colonies. However, in an effort to do extreme method acting, he chose to be treated as a humble worker, so as to experience how life away from Darst is like. That means his new credits account is made almost empty, and no body guards will accompany him.
And, since Corvin is a journalist, he could be coming over in the same ship to Mersk. He could be sent so as to report on the daring movie star exploits, as well as any incidents in space. He may even have heard of rumours of top secret discoveries in space, ranging from encounters with alien life, to finding lost ruins from the golden age of colonisation. All rumours are vague and information heavily censored, so the truth is hard to determine, unless one travels to the frontier.
Edit: The company have now allowed journalists to physically visit the colonies. This is after transparency have been dipping over the years, and pure propaganda is not sustainable to encourage public trust. However, the severity of the situation is now only revealing itself to the company too, and transporting journalists may soon be disallowed again...
And lastly, Declan could be another staff already stationed on the base on Mersk. While ships coming and going is not frequent happening roughly once a week, maintainence and inspection work is often done between the new arrivals.
Or, he could be onboard the same ship as Corvin and Al-Jabbir, just finished his training of ship towwing and repair work to be sent to the colony.

Maybe Abdullah is famous in the Union? Or maybe Corvin is publicly critical of it? Not sure about Declan, but that just means we can do anything. XD
I think he comes from old money, but not terribly old.
I was thinking UA might make more sense because of the new smart weapons, tech, and rapid expansion.
However, Declan doesn't have to be UA.
If Declan is also Union, he could be noble or one of his parents is an advisor or ambassador or something?
What if Declan and Wolf's family ran in the same circles?
It doesn't have to be Union either - I imagine UA and Union do have connections; maybe Declan's parents *are* ambassadors from UA to Union? And that's how Wolf and him crossed paths, at some high society meeting?
The idea of these factions is that the world is a collection of city states ruled by a world government. Over time, people distrust the suppression of truth and history by the Union, and wanted some competing new blood to become the next potential world government, and so comes in the United Advancement.
For centuries, the Union have access to rocket tech, but wants to keep it unused and as a secret. Seemingly "over paranoid" about the dangers of going back to space after the ancient alien war. It was the UA that broke through this limit, much to frustration of the Union due to their overall weakening power.
