Character Creation mostly for players

Jul 7, 2021 6:30 pm
So if you don't have the book out or haven't made a character yet this system is not uber crunchy but there is crunch. There's a lot of this in the book but I'll rambling for a bit so might as well right?

Attributes and Skills are under the umbrella of Traits which is a general term. They go off die for their measurement from d4 to d12+4, skills not trained go off 1d4-2 since you don't even have basic knowledge, somethings you can't try without the skill, I like using the example of surgery since when people know you have no idea what you're doing and have a scalpel everyone goes 'no touchie' for a reason.

Skills are linked to an Attribute/stat, Meta: there isn't a dump stat they're all important for something but you still pick what you want for a character concept. Strength affects how much you can carry (x5 the die type) and caps how much damage you can do with a melee weapon, Chase scene or moving in a dicey situation might need an Agility check called by the GM, Smarts links to a lot of skills and common sense, Spirit links to Fear checks and unshaking from being wounded (more on this later), and Vigor how tough you are till you start feeling the affects of being hurt. That said you can have a skill and it's related to an attribute it can be over your attribute put it's more expensive think of it as you have a capacity to learn up to your linked attribute, over that you've just trained a lot more to get over that cap (it cost twice as much when going over the attribute or stat).

Checks go off Target Numbers (TN) usually stock default is 4 for a TN. Combat is a little different and some things have penalties and bonuses. Sneaking in an all white room with blinding fluorescents? Penalty to stealth probably. Sneaking at night in all black with no moon light? might get a bonus to stealth. Getting to the target number means you pass, at four plus you get what's called a raise so you pass but better, sometimes multiple raises can be counted so more even better opportunities arise.

Savage Worlds is savage to me since dice explode, plus some situations you have a wild die as a wild card (aka player character). Rolling a d4 and a d6 results are 4 on the d4 means you reroll, on the gamer's plane checking the RA (roll again) box does the rerolling for you. So sometimes you can oddly enough get really really lucky and do something out of the norm.

Edge and hindrances had mechanical disadvantages or advantages or change how you would normally do things and help flesh out an example of a wild card. Lets take Indiana Jones (if you're old enough) for an example. He could have a Trademark Weapon: Whip which he's really good at, but he really reaaaally doesn't like snakes so major phobia around snakes (-4 to all rolls when he's perfectly healthy and normal 3 seconds before the snakes show up).

So come up with a character concept and try and build that, it might be some things you'd need to build him into because the concept is just the starting point. Couple lines of background (you don't need a biography) help the GM figure out some things to pull in along with hindrances.

I don't know what setting the game would be in so I have no idea what character to make for that setting...and a step by step process to create a character would be appreciated...for those without the books...

We have 3 others so if sean_don4, Jackwolfking, or crazybirdman have any comments or questions go ahead and post or PM me.

If no one has any books this is probably help. Page 1-6 is going to be the 'homework', feel free to ask questions those who want to learn to GM feel free to ask questions about that as well or wait and see what I'm going to reskin of the module but I'll start posting up Friday seeing how character creation is going or any questions.

So I just picked up a PDF of SWADE and the other companion books (Fantasy, Sci-Fi) so can I make a character application using those or do I need to make one based on the Deadlands setting? I don't have that though...

The test drive rules are in the PDF and has a free Deadlands adventure. The first 6 pages go over the rules but if you have the SWADE book that's really all you need to make a character starting on page 9. We won't be doing Weird West stuff.

Mormegil stats and skills look good, you'll just need to reskin/retool your gear for a sci fi game. Anyone else have question and wanted to make a character to try and learn how to play?

For Sci-Fi I figure the modern or futuristic gear would work for a space game so there's some differences in items like the leather jacket stats change and it goes up to 100 from 80 for example.

Those are farther down in the gear section on the page respectively armor goes ancient/fantasy/modern/futuristic. You won't have to worry as much about survival gear and your kit since it's a beginner game and you won't be camping out for several days in the boonies.

Going for a 3k hike then running errands so I'll try and check back in later if I have time today, I'll be driving out of state Sunday so worst case I'll check things out Monday.

Updated my character sheet for Sci-Fi setting as per GM instructions...
Jul 12, 2021 12:42 pm
Looks good, Approved. I'll start PM'ing other people about characters since I haven't seen a lot of traffic I guess I'll give till Friday and start with who we got.
Jul 13, 2021 2:15 am
Hello. Sorry for the delay getting this done. I have submitted a character sheet for a sci-fi setting.
Jul 13, 2021 12:36 pm
Cool thanks man, PM'd on changes needed and just waiting on gear then for approval.
Jul 13, 2021 2:57 pm
I have made the change from Focus to increasing Common Knowledge, and purchased some equipment. Not sure of the characters setting, or background, so just went for basic stuff.

I'm a bit late to this conversation. Sounds like we're creating sci-fi characters? I can give it a go later today :-) Any tips on how to throw together a character very quickly? (online character generators? or pre-made archetypes?) Thank you.

I'm assuming everyone has the SWADE corebook so they know what I'm talking about but it's pretty quick to make from scratch from the corebook I think once you have a concept in mind that fits the setting. No premades for this one since I figure part of playing is knowing how to make a PC to play. Character Creation starts p. 9 but the quick summary is on p. 55
[ +- ] This doesn't seem that quick when I write it out

Here's a start... I'll import into the gamersplane character sheets soon. Thx.

Name: Bucky

discard it and draw again until you
get a card higher than Five.)

There's other skills like fighting and shooting, I'm okay with you rolling 1d4-2 to shot but others around you (other players) might not be when you accidentally shoot them.

So for skills that you went with I'll point out the costs since you're at 18/12 so you're over
Athletics cost to d8 2
Common Knowledge to d8 3
Notice to d8 3
Persuasion to d8 4
Stealth to d12 6
Jul 14, 2021 5:46 pm
Ah Ok. EDIT: I'll need to review the skill system more carefullly. I'll add Fighting, Shooting as well later today.

No worries again this is a starter game so at the least we're going to know how to make a PC and do stuff I guess because I'm not giving out spoilers.

So if my agility is d8, my athletics still starts at d4 right? Raising an attribute die doesn't automagically raise the linked skills?

and if something isn't a core skill, it starts at what? d0? d2?

So at Character creation Agility starts at d4 if you put two points out of the five for attributes (use 2 points from hindrances is another option to raise one die type) it would be at d8. Your athletics starts at d4 because it's a given now in SWADE. Driving/Riding/Piloting would start at 1d4-2 until you put a skill point into it and it would move up to a d4.

Skills a separate traits from Attributes which is another value that falls under traits.

So to answer the next part if skills are linked to an attribute are they automatically upgraded the answer is no. Attributes are the normal potential cap for a skill die I guess is another way to look at it. After you reach that die type it's harder (cost twice as much) to upgrade up one die type.

There are no core skills in savage worlds, if you have at least a d4 in a skill you 'know' about doing it and have aptitude. Untrained Skill would be anything you don't at least have a d4 in and it's defaulted to 1d4-2. Untrained is used in most skill checks you have a check but not the skill, there are a few situations where you simply can't try untrained.
Jul 15, 2021 5:48 pm
Ok, got it! So the 1st point I put into Shooting, makes it a d4, but if I put a point into Notice, since it's a core skill and already a d4, it takes it from a d4, to d6 (assuming my smarts is d6. if not. that would cost 2 points) is that correct?

edit: one more question, I want my character to be good with explosives (I imagine he is ex-space-military, and now he's a space-prospector) would that be Science or Repair or a custom skill?

It's not really a core skill thing versus non core skill, the previous version Deluxe gave out 15 skill points to distribute at start. In SWADE you get free starting skill points plus 12 points worth to distribute I guess would be a better way to mention it.

So you want to be good at making explosives or throwing explosives? That's two different skills, both can be a bit lethal when things go snakes eyes though.
Jul 15, 2021 6:52 pm
Making explosive. I'm going to take the elder hindrance, so my arm ain't what it used to be, hehe
Jul 15, 2021 7:30 pm
Making would fall under science skill then.
Jul 15, 2021 9:38 pm
ok, my character is mostly done. just gotta spend the money and the hindrance points.
Jul 16, 2021 12:44 pm
@Drakis2 I updated some of the skills for the breakout so you can see where to put skills.

@crazybirdman Looks okay just waiting on gear

@sean_don4 & Jackwolfking going with what's submitted today to review and start planning over the weekend for the one shot just a heads up if you wanted to play otherwise you'll be removed.
Jul 16, 2021 2:47 pm
@Remnant: Great. I am ready to go, so will watch for the game start
