As you advance up the road and approach the felled tree, three black-robed figures with crossbows leap from behind the massive log. The leader (B3) spits in your direction and curses at you.

"Hey, you filthy, double-crossing magots: Bartoz sends his regards. Get 'em boys!"

Taking the center of the road (H17), Fahlasi shakes her dreadlocks as she slips her flail free of its loop at her belt. She'd always known that business with Bartoz would come back and bite them one day!

Alner spits apple pips onto the ground as he whips out his hazelwood wand. Scurrying for cover behind a tree (J19) he spares an unnecessary glance up at Barthelme, his owl familiar, who wheels into position overhead.

"Triple-crossing, actually! You knuckleheads still can't count!"

Alner stabs his wand in the bandits' direction, sending three glowing darts of magical force flying unerringly towards their stinking, unwashed bodies. The halfling is genuinely surprised when the men don't go down. Well, more for Fahlasi. That woman does love to fight!

That was a 1st Level spell, so Alner now has 2 out of his 3 daily spell slots remaining.

The magic missiles unerringly find their targets, completely ignoring their cover and impacting with enough force to draw pained grunts from the men (5 damage to B1 and B3).

"You little twerp!" cries out one of the bandits and fires at the halfling. (20 vs AC for 7 piercing damage)

"Forget the kid you idiots, the *woman* is the dangerous one!" cries another bandit. The two approach the log, level their flatbows at Falhasi, and open fire. (B2 misses, B1 hits with 21 vs AC for 4 piercing damage)

The woman is indeed the dangerous one. Ignoring the crossbow bolt sticking out of her arm, Fahlasi charges forward and springs atop the felled tree. She sticks the landing, and uses the momentum to whip her flail down HARD on the left-most bandit's head, crushing the man's skull like a grapefruit! The bandit topples to the ground, lifeless.

Barthelme dives, wings and talons buffeting the bandit leader's face. But it's merely a well-practiced distraction—one that Alner takes advantage of. A frigid beam of blue-white light shoots out of the wizard’s wand and strikes the man in the chest.

"What's the matter? Getting cold feet?" Alner laughs as the man's face goes ashen and his lips turn blue. Mindful of his own wounds though, the halfling ducks through the bushes, cautiously making for the roots of the felled tree. Fahlasi can handle them! Of course she can!

So I'm hoping to get total cover for Alner if at all possible. Also hoping the owl's Flyby trait can get Barthelme back in the air without provoking Opportunity Attacks.

Fahlasi's flail fells her foe easily. He slumps down, sending panic through the eyes of his comrades. Both men drop their flatbows and go for their scimitars. Alner's ice ray further impedes the man on the right, but as he swats away the owl he pulls his blade free.

"Slit 'er throat! cries one, but he misses. The other manages to pierce her thigh in a desperate lunge (4 slashing damage)

Fahlasi is hurting now. She easily dodged the blade aimed at her throat but blood streams down her leg from the ugly gash in her thigh. She must keep the high ground to maintain her advantage! She whips her flail upward in a savage swipe, smashing through the bandit leader's breastbone and jaw with a sickening crunch!

Alner scampers around the tree roots, grimaces at Fahlasi's gory handiwork. This is brutal even for the warrior woman, but she's just trying to survive. And save Alner's hide while she's at it. Still, enough of this.

"Time to go beddy-bye, meathead," the wizard murmurs, waggling his wand at the remaining bandit. The man goes cross-eyed and crashes into the dirt, sucking his thumb as he dreams of his mother.

"About damn time!" Fahlani huffs, dropping to the ground to stand over the snoring man. She divests the survivor of his weapons, then fishes a length of rope from her pack to tie the man up.

That earns a chuckle from Fahlasi but she says nothing more. She bandages up her wounds and Alner's before slapping the hog-tied bandit awake. The warrior woman leans against the tree trunk, muscular arms crossed, scarred eyebrow cocked, as Alner prepares to interrogate. This part is always fun to watch
