The World of Alpharas

Only the oldest of elves can remember when the night sky of Alpharas was set with a thousand jewels.

To most, the stars are a forgotten myth, a pretty story for children. They look up into the pitiless, unadorned black and can imagine nothing else. But the wise old ones are right – there were once constellations and twinkling lights in the sky as on a thousand other worlds.

But some seven hundred years, without a fuss, they began to go out.

The nights became darker and more dangerous, monsters roaming the inky black beyond the light of torch or hearth unchallenged, and celestial navigation became nigh impossible. For years uncounted the forces of darkness ruled from sundown to sunrise, pushing against castles and cities in a cruel tide and civilisation seemed to gutter and wane like dying embers.

And then, a hundred years ago, the dwarves lit the night. In a cavern beneath the earth the Moon was crafted, an immense lantern of mithril and silver, diamond lenses and sorcery. With the aid of the other folk of Alpharas and an immense effort of magic and engineering it was lifted aloft into the starless sky, to cast down a cool, reassuring light on the world beneath, to offer sanctuary and hope in the darkest night.

The heavy lifting for this campaign setting was done with Donjon, with some tweaks and connections added from that random inspiration. Some neat ideas and through-lines appeared - the bits of lore 'there were once stars in the night sky' and 'the quest of the Star Wizards has failed' are clearly related, and the fact that the town elders are a coven of witches creates a Macbeth-like atmosphere.

Players are welcome to connect, suggest and create NPCs, parts of the world and other setting elements as needed as they relate to their character backgrounds or making the random points below more textured and interesting.

Nakhtara, the Empire in the Night, the Black Bloods

For centuries during the Starless Age, the monstrous empire of Nakhtara was the greatest threat to the day-dwelling folk of Alpharas. In the badlands beyond the Shadowcap Mountains the mighty hobgoblin warlord Manak-Sur welded together the disparate tribes of goblinkind with iron, fire and terror. A cunning diplomat as well as strategist, he formed alliances with other darkness-loving races such as the cruel drow and grim duergar of the Underdark. Those that he could not persuade or conquer he warred with, enslaving the ogre bands of the Broken Marches and driving the fierce and unyielding orc cults of the tundra into exile, leading to their invasion of the elven lands.

Only the ambitions and paranoia of the factions that made up the empire kept it from sweeping over all of Alpharas on those lightless nights. Emperors rose and fell to political backbiting or literal daggers in their spines. The hordes that made up the hobgoblin core frequently rebelled and had to be bloodily brought back into line. The orcs never forgave or forgot, and fight endless and brutal skirmishes and raids on the borders of Nakhtara. Nevertheless, the empire grew and pressed against Ithlond and other domains. Many dwarven cities fell to prolonged sieges, while halfling villages in the occupied lands turned to magic and cleverness to conceal themselves, and some humans assimilated with their conquerors as slaves or willing soldiers.

The first rise of the Moon gave the free peoples their best hope against Nakhtara. The hope embodied by Rielah and the magic of his priesthood renewed their spirits, and the light of the moon gave them a fighting chance at night. The appearance of the silver orb in the sky was taken as a terrible omen by the Black Bloods, sending ripples of fear and dissensions through the empire which the dynasty has spend generations putting down.

Hobgoblins
Hobgoblins in Alpharas lose the Saving Face trait. They instead choose a subrace from the following list.

The Calendar of Alpharas

The dates in Alpharas are reckoned from the rise of the Moon and the start of a new age of hope – it is currently the one hundred and second year of Rielah's Count. Before this were the six centuries of the Starless Age, and before that the half-mythical Bright Days or Starry Age. Years have 395 days.

Weeks are nine days long. The days are named: Achiel, Razar, Rielaph, Kiraf, Gagavr, Hielel, Ariel, Pyriel and Zepha.

Achiel through Ariel are the days of the working week. Traditionally Pyriel is Fest-Day, the day for celebrations, feasts, energetic religious festivals and socialisation. Zepha is Rest-Day, the day for sleeping off the excesses of Pyriel, contemplation, quiet prayer, meditation and study for the next week.

There are five months, each 79 days long: Peniyah, Aniel, Hamue, Alphos and Samue. In Rielah's Count is is customary to divide each month into two half-months of 40 and 39 days for convenience and to approximately match the cycle of the Moon.

Each month roughly corresponds with a season: Aniel is spring, Hamue is summer, Alphis is autumn or fall, Samue is winter. Peniyah is caline or fade, a season peculiar to Alpharos. It is a bleak pause at the start of the year, gloomy, foggy but rarely cold or snowy. It is the time of the year where the worlds of Faerie and Shadow are close at hand.

OOC:
Interesting calendar. So this is a solar calendar that is based around the moon. Cool world-building. These poor workers have to endure 7 day workweeks. Glad to be on Earth even more now
