Thread to coordinate the story when House Kohola'uhane meets Novaro

MagnificentFly says:
So, Gareth's die increased to 1d4 due to his success with the natives and I am giving 1d4 (2d2) from the global dice (Rodrcik's resources on the sheet) making it 1d6+1d2(for the skill?) to represent his search party.

For the challenges, I think it would be better to give 2 of Clubs to Gareth to deal with as he reaches nearest island going forth. It is likely that he would encounter a wildlife to fight.
And 8 of Spades to the Search party. They can encounter a ghost ship on the edge of the mist (the Shroud of the Shrouded Isles) and possibly learn of a safe passage to the Isles.
So you didn't loose resources last post, meaning that Gareth keeps his two resources (1d4), you now make another hero (1d2) for the second challenge. You can supply each one with 1 resource giving you a 1d6 and a 1d4 to roll. This is just to keep the probabilities from escalating too fast :D

Ghost ship sounds good. There are two map structure in the game that matches that. Not sure if they help.

Remember you are not getting out on that boat, so maybe it will sink or is beyond use.

Ok, so for the two challenges MagnificentFly is thinking about having Gareth land on the next island and fighting some wild beast while having the Divine encountering a ghost ship on the edge of the mist.

I suggest having a big tribal hunting day out, set up by the lords of T2: Chandler (yeah... there are a limited number of names in the game...). Maybe Morg brags about Gareth's show of your courage or something?

Oh, man. I re-read my original post about it and there are a few key things missing (that's what I get for typing on the phone, never again). So, to clarify, the idea is to not split Gareth's party but to "activate" Bartholomew's search party, so GG(Gareth and Gallavant) would explore the next island and encounter wild beasts, and Bartholomew would encounter a ghost ship at the edge of the mist that shrouds the Shrouded Isles.

There is a "to Bartholomew" missing.

ahah so true. that and "just doing a quick post". Feel free to correct anything you need :D

Finished the post by the way :D

Snowcrash has 2 Military challenges (Monsters + High Races ). Any ideas of what you want it to be?

To me, it looks like Lilinoe is getting ready for war, so an attack on the settlement S1 Hilltown fits very well. For a twist, I'll say that is the High races challenge. turns out, the elves from New Dawn (T3/4) are moving fast and have kicked out Garfunkel (was he captured or did he run back to T2:Elk's Head?). This is an opportunity to get some ships to strike back and deal with two competing wizards.

If you want to deal with the ogre issue now, you can send another group to betray the alliance during the attack and kill the orcs for the Monster's challenge). If it is too early for that, or you plan to recruit these ogres, maybe you sent Aeron Greyjell east to search for Solmyr and he is ambushed by a group of medusas or minotaurs?

You failed, so I'll make a little "thread intro".

Oh brother, you gave me lots to work on, nice. I'll post today but I'll try to not make it too long.
Also, I can't wrap my head around the name Garfunkel. A wizard with that name is, like, first on the hit-list :D

Melodimancer ? Necrodancer ?

OK, so that's it.
So, you rolled 2, which I suppose is "You made it but at a cost". I realised that you described my "FAIL" and I kind of made it into a new trait/power/ally. Feel free to punish Lilinoe with some curse or storm again or whatever. Well, being a necromancer is kind of fail I guess, you loose your charisma or something. Also, I will deal with the second challenge and the second roll when you post back. Then, the second challenge can involve Solmyr.

I remember this being brought up before. I think it is a nice thing and a lot of RPGs have that sort of rules, so it’s also intuitive, but for the moment the only rule is if you roll 1 you pay for it ( could be a fail or a hard success, it’s up to you).

This is mostly to keep it simple as the focus is on the narrative. It also avoids unexpected complications from adding layers and edge to rules, which are likely to break once you start rolling d10s and d12s. But will review this before scenario 2 :)
Snowcrash says:

Sorry about that, it was probably a bit confusing. When I wrote "fail" I was referring to the (actually not very noticeable) rule that Unsolved challenges become threats, which are NPC heroes on their own. What I rolled for was the action of a new NPC generated by your fail (a threat). So something, somewhere, at some point, attracted a lot of undead.

This rule is just another way to add something extra to the story randomly (like Remnant’s wolf being killed). The rules were basically thought out more as randomisers and less of strict mechanics like D&D
Snowcrash says:

Not at all. Necromancy is generally bad and yeah, some of these games make that obvious, but it doesn’t have to be. There are no stats to limit the narrative so you can have Lilinoe learning necromancy for perfectly acceptable reason and become a charismatic leader in her own right if you want. You can also play her as descending into madness and corruption if that is your style. It’s our story to tell. Use the stereotypes that fit, twist them when it suits your needs.

It does have a nice ring to it... Somehow my characters in any game end up not very normal or human.

So, I guess I get the whole attitude towards the rules - and if you feel they are being bent, you can always strike a Player down with your GM powers

😂😂😂 It's more like they are there to guide you, while I try to weave the individual stories into something consistent.

For example, you just said you have an haunted ship and MagnificentFly is going to find an haunted ship... Could there be a relationship here? Maybe Bartholomew is about to meet Lilinoe (she is going to the island where Gareth is!). What do you guys think?

I'm getting the OT threads confused, sorry :D So, yeah, that's what I was thinking about the ogres and the "tragic character". I'll think of some challenges to the new powers being born
Aug 25, 2021 12:18 pm
sounds good. we may want to build that tragic slowly as there are at least 3 scenarios to go :D

So, if I understood well, all the undead were taken by the kraken? Does that mean... you don't have enough crew to steer the ships?

the way I imagined it is, the undead were fighting and losing sure but as someone pointed out, they rather wanted to go aboard. Later, I´ll try to show that Lilinoe not as much controls the undead at her disposal but sometimes gets their cooperation or, is even controlled by them. I´ll see later how to make her life harder.

I have an idea about the undead challenge that will make sense both narratively and mechanically as well as potentially add some spice.

What the Divine meets a ghost ship (as in incorporeal) and follows it. Bart, being a paladin, would want to destroy it. As it is an Intel based challenge, what if on failure he will engage in combat with a ship, only for it to be revealed to be Lilinoe's ship, creating a PvP situation, and on success he realizes that the ship is helmed by the living and takes a diplomatic approach, leading to co-op situation?
Aug 26, 2021 6:56 am
Sounds great! What do you think Snowcrash?

Depending on how much you want to write, I'd say you can actually split it in two and do another cliffhanger before the combat/diplomacy scene.

Sure, why not, the more (trouble) the merrier :) In general, I think that, if possible and if we're in the same place, we should interfere with each other without consulting beforehand. That would make GM's job harder at times (he has to decide the outcome) but also gives us some sense of randomness and struggle. Hm?

So, I succeeded on the undead challenge, so no shots were fired. There will be no PvP here ... at least it won't be initiated by me right now.

Of note, the Divine is probably one of the most famous ships in this region, so Lilinoe would probably recognize it or at least heard of it. Whether she knows Gareth or not is up to you, Snowcrash.

4 of Diamonds - seems Gareth will have to pay for the pets he killed

Why is everything written in notes here, if it's an OOC topic and we all read it :D
Also, yeah, I don't have any good plan about where I want to lead the conversation/meeting - I figured I'll just wing it, depending on the other part.
OOC:
ahah good qeustion :D I'm trying to keep a bit of mystery. If it is something we're discussing about what to do next, I try to keep that from the other players so they see the final result only :D
I'm good with you finishing when you thing you're ready. This meeting will basically lead to Lilinoe's being rescued and you joining forces temporarily (with potential to prepare some future conflicts).
Lininoe has no challenge at the moment, so she will just land on Yorkfork. If magnificentfly is ok with it, I think B/M will join Linione on this one, so you can continue interacting as needed. This is mostly because magnificentfly's attention will be on the G/G challenge.

Let me know when you're ready, I'll set both scenes :D
Sep 1, 2021 6:02 pm
OK, I think I've got an idea of what to do and how to steer the story. I'm not going to do it today but it'll all come together rather nicely.
Also, magnificentfly, if you'd add something before I do, I'll build on that :D
Sep 1, 2021 6:26 pm
that is intriguing :D take your time, no pressure
Sep 1, 2021 7:50 pm
I can write up a summary of the voyage till the landing during which there would be an exchange of information. As in, Lininoe's search for her companion and Fount of Wizardry (unless she wouldn't mention it) and Bart and Margaret's search for Gareth and Lord Galavant. I assume that neither Lininoe nor her crew would mention the fact that they had an undead crew for a while, considering paladins' famous 'tolerance' of the undead, but would mention Harpies and the Kraken as well as what to expect from locals.

First of all: bro, it's Li-li-no-e, not Li-ni-no-e :D
I left her back so that if you wanted, you could grill her a little about the undead, keep the drama going.

Also, I either don't remember or don't know why exactly is Aeron not fond of Novaros - but I'll play on that later when they all meet in Yorkford (if you'll go there, that is)

CESN says:
Food for fly's thoughts: How did MArgaret find out about the orc shaman, the undead and the siege? (that will probably surprise lilinoe ;) )
The siege and orc shaman, I assume that this info was shared during the voyage, after all, they were 11 people on a ship that requires more people to sail. They would have to say something about what they were doing, especially considering that they are joining forces. Regarding the undead, that's mostly Sogo's fault, he pretty much confirmed Bart's suspicions.
Sep 7, 2021 11:50 am
True. I was wondering if it was general gossip or someone you may have befriended. General gossip it :D

Uff guys, I started my studies for real, plus the weather here (around 35 each day which is new and hard for me)... I'll post something tomorrow evening or at night but right now I am dead tired :) If my lectures are boring tomorrow, I'll note something then :D

There you have it. I like the idea of doing the rolls and then building the descritpion around it. I think I could-should have been more brutal (yeah, there are 1´s...) but the flow took me somewhere else. But I think it is possible to discern the outcome through the narrative
Nov 9, 2021 11:09 am
wooow, I´m smart :D I thought that the topic was closed by you but it turned out, I changed my browser and wasn´t logged in :)
