As my handle suggests, I like philosophy. The world you're in was inspired by social philosophy/political theory. For example, if you've ever read Plato's Republic, it's a comparison of different forms of government.
- Tyranny (a system where an absolute ruler rose to power outside of any sort of constitutional right)
- Aristocracy ( a state ruled by a wise elite, philosophers kings such as Marcus Aurelius)
- Democracy (the entire population of a state participates in government)
- Oligarchy (essentially, rule by the rich)
- Timocracy (only property owners may participate in government)
and by extension, if I remember correctly, anarchy (no formal centralized government) is referenced as well. Despite Athens being famous for being a democratic state, Plato didn't like democracy and advocated for an aristocracy (I made Hoffnungsadel Plato's preferred system of government).
In the game we've begun playing, the aristocracy has been overthrown. According to the Republic, this would make Lord Commander Emil a tyrant. In the world you're in, other cities/states are organized along principles found in Plato's Republic, and other works treating social organization.
In my notes, Hoffnungsadel was just called "The capital". I made the name for the game. It feels clunky to me, but I needed something. Since your PCs are all from this one city, you'd know that the next closest town is actually a sort of outpost that exists more or less on its own. An invading army wouldn't necessarily be realistic. Hoffnungsadel prides itself on being a well-thought-out city.
I'll make it more available to you as I can transcribe it. Also, if you have any questions, post them in the OOC thread. Please and thank you!
