Setting Discussion

Ok, so here we will discuss what kind of game and the setting. So I found some good summer camp maps. The best one is a Baptist summer camp with a lot of cool features. We can say the Baptist camp closed down a few years ago under mysterious circumstances and was sold, or we can play up the religious aspect. Do we want a more serious splatter vibe, or a more campy one? Are we playing F13 1/2 or 6/7?

I'd vote for not 100% serious but closer to that end of the spectrum, with some tropeyness to lighten it up.

I'm with bowlofspinach; mostly serious, with a few tropes of the genre.

F13 Part 7... That was my first foray into slasher films.
Jason whapped a girl into a tree in her sleeping bag... That blew my mind.

This is a good question. I'm fine with modern day if you all want. 80s or 90s is also viable. I'm not familiar enough with anything beyond that haha.

Did anyone have a preference if they want it to be a religious summer camp or not? The pro is it will be unique cuz I've never seen that done before. Con is obviously religious stuff is always touchy and I don't want to force players into certain character traits. I think the middle ground is that there is a religious history to the place, but it was sold off to a secular company that reopened the camp.

I'd just vote for modern day. With no cellphone reception or mobile internet at the camp, obviously

For religious, I'm fine with it any way we decide to go with. My character is just there for the money, so she doesn't care if it's a religious camp or not 😄

...or perhaps the phones are collected and returned at the end. Some camps do these things!

I'm okay with the religious angle or not. Could be a cool take, but agree -- if someone has sensitivities in that area, we should probably just avoid.

Yeah, I think kids would have theirs taken. But counselors can have phones, it just means there will be a hurricane that springs up and outside help can't get there :) or other supernatural shenanigans.

Indeed! Bad kids can also steal our phones to demonstrate the inequity and fight the man!

The scariest part about being a camp counselor is not the monster, but having to take care of all of these little goblins.

Modern day is fine by me as well. I don't have any feelings one way or the other on the religious camp angle, but I'd say the same thing @bowlofspinich said... My character is just in it for some money before leaving for school at the end of the summer. He's pretty disinterested in the religious aspect of the camp and mostly just like getting kids to learn to paddle canoes and shoot bows and whatever other exercise the oversees as the Physical Fitness counsellor about the woods and stuff as the naturalist activities counselor.

We're horrible counselors. As we should be for a horror movie.

So far, we're just missing that one extremely excited and enthusiastic counselor that everybody ignores. Thought that could also be the NPC head counselor

Lol this is a great idea. People can also be clumsy and drop their phones into water, onto hard rocks, or forget to charge them lol. A variety of convenient plot devices, er, coincidences!

Making a quick list of the notable areas and which activities there are, roughly grouped into categories for each character.

Physical Fitness - Tennis courts, gym, volleyball, playground
Outdoors - Forbidden Hill, climbing tower and zip line, archery, maze, paintball
Water - swimming pool, docks, kayaking, the blob
Arts/Crafts - Short Memorial (Crafts), Loops Lodge (Music)
Cooking/Nurse station - Jensen building

Notes: The place is quite large, so we'll say this is the first time the camp reopened after some to-be-disclosed tragedy, the camp isn't at capacity and some features are unused: mini golf, barn (no animals), RV center, Retreat center, and Family Youth Dorm. This means most of the western half is "abandoned" except for the arts/crafts and music buildings, the tower, and the gym. Hopefully this makes them a little more foreboding if anyone has to travel there and makes the size more manageable for me lol.

Depending on how many players/characters we end up with, I can further divide these. Let me know if I missed anything or have any recommendations.

Feel free to go against some cliches on some things! Maybe someone is the actual good counselor who gets ridiculed by everyone else for taking the job too seriously. We could also use an older counselor, maybe someone retired or middle aged teacher who does this work during summer vacation for some extra money. Could be a troubled person doing community service after a run-in with the law. Lots of fresh ideas people can use!

Ok I posted a new thread with all the camp info. I'll post a short summary of common knowledge about the camp tonight: history, current owners, important NPC names, etc. Should be able to get started this weekend at the latest! Let me know if I missed any fun camp activities or if anything I put is unrealistic. I've never actually been to summer camp lol.

All you need to know is that with real camps counselors named Dacey are usually heavily armed, have armor, are left alone by killers, and generally get what they want.

In my counseling experience, Susans are usually masked slasher movie villains. So this game might take a different turn than expected 🪓😎

The harried groundskeeper is usually the murderer, right?

Great. We'll probably end up with multiple homicidal maniacs.

Plot twist: This isn't a slasher horror game about us trying desperately to survive but just some gory hijinks of us murdering all the children

Okay, that made me ROFL and almost caused a Coke Zero miracle!

Ok camp history is up! Haven't heard from PixE so I'm just going to start the game this weekend and he can jump in whenever he has his character finished.

I updated the camp map with the firepit, unused building markers, and bunk assignment information for both campers and counselors. Hope it helps!

I just want to say that Harrigan is doing a fantastic job with the role-playing of Dacy. Really, everyone is doing a great job and I am really enjoying the game, but I have a friend who is female and black and I swear she could be writing Harrigan's dialogue! In fact, I showed her the board and she said to tell him that she is proud of him for representing.

Haha that's awesome. Also, this is the internet! Harrigan could be a black woman and everything else has just been a ruse! :P

Nice to hear, WhtKnt, and thanks for the kind words. Dacey is specifically a southern girl who moved to NYC, so trying to rep a little of that, too. I might be cheating a little -- my daughter is black (adopted from Ethiopia) and over my career I've worked with a number of really strong African American women in New Orleans, Alabama, Georgia, and other spots. I have mad respect for them and just hope I can do the character justice.
