"Hope is the formaldehyde of life." --- A Sin-Eater proverb

Time: 9:15 pm CDT
Location: Carrollton, New Orleans

Situated on Saint Charles Avenue in the historic Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans, the Guillory House is a beautiful home by most accounts. Architecturally, it’s a center hall cottage – a style of building that appeared in the city during the early 1800s and was popularized by the upper middle class. The house’s basic layout is rectangular and raised about five feet off of the ground, which puts the entire structure at two and a half stories high. It sports a gabled roof, white weatherboard walls, and is enclosed by a wrought-iron fence. The windows are evenly spaced – with two on either side of the front door - and curtained with white lace. A wide-sitting roofed porch with Italianate columns makes up the façade of the building, accessed by a central stair and surrounded by immaculate landscaping. At first glance, the building strikes you as old.

Inside, the home is equally as attractive. Hardwood floors, brass ensconces, and walls of white plaster decorated with family portraiture and Impressionist paintings. The furnishings seem as old as the house itself: ornate 19th century end tables, armoires, bookcases, and salon chairs that lend an air of "southern gothic-ness" to the place. In general, the rooms of the home are symmetrically laid out and accessible by a central hallway. A small glass chandelier in each of the rooms provides soft light. Only the occasional modern contrivance, such a flat screen television or laptop, breaks from the home’s antiquated colonial décor.

Under the guise of paranormal investigators, your krewe was invited to the home of the Guillory family. For almost a year now, the Guillories have been terrorized by events that they claim are supernatural in nature. It began when the family moved in a year ago and got portions of the house remodeled. Individual family members reported strange noises, footsteps coming from empty rooms, and cold spots in which the air temperature was 10 degrees colder than the surroundings. This proceeded into appliances turning on and off seemingly on their own, objects being relocated, and hand prints on the bathroom mirror after a steamy shower. The family initially assumed that these occurrences were simply the sounds of an old house settling, or that there were problems with the house’s wiring.

However, things have ramped up in the past few months. The family has reported briefly seeing shadow people, catching movement from the corner of their eyes, and the constant feeling of being watched. Strange smells, whispers, and mysterious laughter have been growing in frequency, and the walls have occasionally leaked an odorous, opaque gel-like substance that no one appears able to identify. Still, the family had remained mostly in a state or denial or grudging tolerance until the Guillory’s fourteen year old daughter, Samantha, started waking up with inexplicable scratches and bite marks. She will no longer sleep alone in her bedroom.

Currently, you are all meeting with the Guillory family in the parlor of their home. The room is decorated with several plush chairs and love seats, as well as bookcases, rugs, and a mahogany work desk that makes it hard to tell if this is supposed to be a living room, office, or study. Your krewe was referred to the family by one of your contacts in the voodouisant community of New Orleans. From what your contact has explained to you, the family is desperate and needs help. And best of all, they are in a position to offer payment, which isn’t always the case with many of the people helped by your krewe. It’s clear, just from the house alone, that this family has money.

Claudine Guillory and her daughter sit on one of the small couches. Mother and daughter look very much alike: soft features, light auburn hair, and willowy frames. Both are sitting quietly, and Claudine is drinking what appears to be tea. They are dressed in brand name upscale summer dresses. Based on their body language, Claudine and Samantha Guillory seem scared but hopeful, especially Claudine. It’s something that your krewe has seen many times before with victims of hauntings; a fatigued vigilance that develops from frequently living in fear. From the way that Claudine is stroking her daughter’s back, you can tell that she’s more afraid for her daughter than herself.

A stern-looking middle-aged man sits by himself in a nearby armchair. Jérôme Guillory appears as though he just arrived from work. He’s clad in a charcoal gray business suit that indicates some kind of white collar profession. Given the oppressive heat and humidity of Louisiana, no one would normally dress that way unless they had to. Unlike his wife and daughter, the expression of impatience on Jérôme’s face tells you that he isn’t very supportive of bringing your krewe here. It was likely his wife and daughter’s idea. Either he doesn’t belief that the strange events in his home are supernatural, or he is angry over the embarrassment of calling paranormal investigators for help.

You’ve asked to come to the house in the late evening. The krewe and the Guillories have only just made introductions before retreating to the parlor. Claudine does all of the talking. Samantha is quiet; due to fear or shyness, you can’t say. Jérôme sits and studies each of you with a leer of skepticism. He hardly speaks.

"Thank you again for coming." Claudine smiles nervously between sips of tea. She gives you all glances of desperate hope that are painful to see. "We didn't know where else to turn. I was told that you deal with... this kind of problem. You came highly recommended by a woman who used to do the housekeeping here."

First contact with the living was always so much more awkward than with the Dead, especially when there was money involved. Honestly, cases like this went so much smoother when the 'client' wasn't paying but money was a necessity even for the Sin Eaters. Jay had sympathy for the mother and daughter but the father rubbed him the wrong way. He'd known men like him all his life, never on good or equitable terms, but he pushed that instant dislike aside for the sake of professionalism, curiosity and empathy for the rest of the family.
We do have a bit of experience dealing with unquiet spirits. Jay nodded his head, agreeing with Mrs. Guillory. Situations like this are our business, you could say. Understand that most of the time we get called out to investigate that there's a perfectly logical every-day reason for unusual happenings in a home or business...
Black mold toxicity is common in New Orleans homes, infrasound exposure from HVAC or plumbing, undiagnosed psychiatric issues and, believe it or not, even criminal extortion have all been causes of supposed hauntings we've investigated.
Jay leaned on the console table behind the setteé facing the mother and daughter. The Living always liked assurances that their world wasn't as weird as it really was. Putting them closer to their comfort zone usually helped ease tensions even if it wasn't exactly the truth. That doesn't mean we don't believe what you've seen or experienced but that there may be other explanations than the supernatural...just that we'll explore the mundane before going into the supernatural. Why don't you tell us more about your experiences in the home. Any previous unnatural occurances before moving here? Do you know any history on the house from before you moved in? Did anything happen before you began remodelling or did it begin afterward?

Long Man, the geist attached to Jay, lurked in a corner levitating just below the ceiling, his attention tuned towards the gruff distaste eminating from Mr. Guillory. The gray, gaunt nearly naked figure floated as if submerged, his long black hair swaying in unseen spectral currents.

Max sat across from Mr. Guillory watching him while Jay went through the standard disclaimers that they had learned were best to mention upfront when entering into a business relationship such as this. There were, after all, a host of mundane reasons that might explain what the family was experiencing. Max felt sure that the man sitting across from him had ruled most if not all of them out before consenting to this meeting. Still, it helped to acknowledge the mundane possibilities if only to reassure the client that just because they were 'Paranormal' investigators, they didn't let that limit their investigation.

When Jay concluded his introduction, Max cleared his throat, smiled, and made a point of looking Mr. Guillory directly in the eye as he added, "Regardless of whatever conclusion our investigation reaches, you can count on our discretion."

While not dressed as formally as Mr. Guillory, Max maintained a clean-cut, professional appearance. He wore a button-down Polo shirt with khaki slacks, and his hair, brown with hints of red and silver, was cut short; his beard and mustache closely trimmed. Max's Geist, The Forgotten, appeared in sharp contrast to the man to whom he was Bound. His form was indistinct, never quite appearing in focus, but he gave the impression of an unkempt pre-teen or teen-aged boy. Blurry or not, it was clear that his feet were bare and filthy, and his clothes were wrinkled and torn.

The Forgotten had followed Max as far as the parlor but hadn't gone inside. Instead, he wandered from one room of the house to another. The two of them had been together long enough that Max knew there was little he could do to contain what he had come to think of as boyish enthusiasm that The Forgotten displayed while familiarizing himself with a new environment. It was usually fine. The outcome would almost certainly be preferable to anything that might result from an effort on Max's part to contain him. Through their bond, Max knew roughly where his companion was and he seemed to be content with that.

Sitting with her legs crossed in the form-fitting black silk lounge pants, with matching long sleeved blouse of silk and black lace, and choker, the attractive green-eyed young woman with the short mop of hair like fire sits quietly observing everything. Glimpses of the inked body art adorning her lithe dancer's frame can be seen, if one should look hard enough, through the intricate black lace; especially about her décolletage. High end simple black pumps complete her ensemble.

Adriana subconsciously fidgets with the unique antique bracelet about her thin left wrist, as she twists it slight left and right with the thumb and index fingers. Her well-manicured and perfectly lacquered nails of silver-tipped ebony glint in the light, as she moves them at the bracelet.

She is yet undecided as to whether she has seen the white-collared and grey-suited Monsieur Jérôme Guillory as a frequent customer at Rick's. She knew his type all too well. Starch and proper before the eyes of family and genteel society, then slavering at the foot of the stage like a dog begging for the sights and scents of a private dancer's naked flesh and essence.

The Impure lurks up behind the man in a form of many haunted feminine faces and arms emerging and vanishing in an ephemeral vortex of misty tentacles. The Dread Geist has immediately conveyed, in so many gestures and its current form, their displeasure in the male skeptic's presence. It would be bad for Mr. Guillory to cause a ruckus while they loom. Though, to be honest, they didn't care much for most males of the human species.

Derek admired the style and design of the house and the fact it was still standing after the test of time. Although not famous enough for everyone to point out its creator it had character he thought as he and the others were ushered in leaving him mostly distracted. He sat with his satchel in his beige linen covered lap his toes wiggling in boat shoes as he scanned the moldings. He hadn't really felt out the man of the house but he did feel a bit jealous and coveted having his wife and daughter. He dismissed the idea when looking at the being next to his chair that opted to stare at the ceiling no doubt Derek figured musing about an ancient timber still supporting the house. If he wanted a family he would have started dating again... that just seemed too difficult and awkward still.

With a short inhale he adjusted the rolled up sleeves of his white linen shirt and leaned forward, "Could you retell us in your own words what has transpired over time again?" he requested looking to the lady and young miss of the house. Derek completely ignored The Driftwood King who had opted to make himself at home spreading out into a small field of wooden bits on the floor.

The Guillory family looks to Jay as he speaks. In response to his words, Claudine says, "We don't know of any previous occurrences in the house before we moved here. Prior to us, I believe the house had sat uninhabited for a long period. I will say that the house was surprisingly inexpensive when you consider the location and the market at the time. We assumed that it was because of the damage taken from Katrina." She takes a sip of tea and continues. "The... activity didn't start until we began remodeling, but we started remodeling almost immediately after moving in. As I said, the house had been uninhabited for a while so it needed some work. I've looked into the property history records at the Parish Assessor's Office, but I couldn't find any history of deaths at this house." Claudine places her cup down and shakes her head, ruefully. "The real estate agent never said a single thing to us about a haunting."

Claudine Guillory's last statement doesn't surprise any of you. The State of Louisiana doesn't require sellers to disclose when a property is "stigmatized" - meaning that it was the site of a murder or suicide. Consequently, your krewe has met more than a few individuals who unknowingly moved into homes with dark or tragic histories. The Guillories' story is, unfortunately, a familiar one.

At the mention of the word haunting, Jérôme Guillory glowers and audibly exhales through his nose. Claudine shoots her husband a look of disapproval. "You said that you'd try be open-minded," she says to him with an accusatory tone. At his wife's reproach, Jérôme folds his arms but nods to her in deference. When Max makes his statement about discretion, it's hard to say if Mr. Guillory is put at ease or not. Jérôme regards Max as though trying to gauge his sincerity.

Claudine shifts her attention to Derek as he speaks. She closes her eyes, taking a moment to gather her thoughts, and looks back at Derek. You can clearly see that the memories are uncomfortable for her to recall.

She exhales slowly before speaking. "It started when we began remodeling the first floor of the house. Carrollton was fortunate in that much of the neighborhood was spared during Katrina... the ground here is fairly high... but the area still got its share of flooding. Many of the houses in Carrollton sit on raised piers which also helped. Regardless, the exterior of the house needed some repairs. Mostly cosmetic stuff. We started renovating in the kitchen, as well. It wasn't long before the workers that we hired began complaining about strange noises and about tools going missing. They swore that someone was walking around the house, even when no one else was home."

She sighs. "Workers then began quitting. Some of them were religious, or simply superstitious, and they said something was wrong with the house... spiritually. We had a revolving door of workers for a while... couldn't keep any of them for more than a couple months. Over time, the activity got worse. At first, it was just strange and disconcerting. Then strange smells... flies everywhere... and a substance leaking from our walls. We began seeing things. And then a few months ago, the activity became aggressive." Claudine looks toward her daughter. "Honey, do you mind showing them? It's okay if you don't want to..."

Samantha Guillory has been keeping her eyes to the floor, though she occasionally shoots darting glances around the room. At her mother's request, the teenager nods and stands up. Jérôme leans forward in his chair and opens his mouth as though he's about to argue, but Samantha cuts him off. "It's fine, dad." Her voice has a strange weariness to it that's sad to hear coming from someone her age.

Samantha is wearing a light blue dress with floral print, puffy sleeves, and a pleated hem. Reluctantly, the girl pulls up the sleeve of each arm, revealing a trail of long scratch marks that recede up her shoulder. Some of the marks are faded and look old, while others are bright red and appear to be more recent. She then turns her back towards all of you, and you see more scratches beginning at the nape of her neck and trailing down below the dress' neckline. And then finally, Samantha very clinically pulls the hem of her dress just above her knee. Here you can see more scratches, as well as odd semi-circular markings that, chillingly, look like bite marks from human teeth. The markings seem to continue up her thighs.

As her daughter demonstrates her injuries, Claudine becomes teary-eyed and looks away. Jérôme watches and clenches his jaw in anger.

Anyone who'd like to, give me a Wits + Composure roll. That's a basic perception roll in this system.

If you are new to the Storytelling System, roll a number of ten-sided dice equal to your Wits and Composure Attributes. For instance, if you have Wits 3 and Composure 2, you'll be rolling 5d10.

Any results of 8 or higher are considered successes. Re-roll any 10s, and keep re-rolling as long as you get 10s. As long as you get at least one success, you have succeeded at the roll. Five or more successes means you got an "exceptional success."

No successes means that you failed the roll. If you fail a roll, you may opt to make that failure a "dramatic failure." That indicates some kind of additional negative consequence, but in return, you receive a Beat. A Beat is used toward an experience point.

Adriana stops fidgeting with her bracelet the moment Samantha's first marks are revealed. She drops the slender hand down to her side to help hide the clenched fist, that betrays the redhead's anger that someone either alive or dead having injured this young girl so.

Max listens with growing concern as a familiar-sounding story becomes less and less so. Hearing Mrs. Guilllory talk about the haunting, seeing the tension between family members, and the bite and scratch marks on Samantha's back, arms, and legs drove home the fact that whatever they are dealing with here is extremely dangerous.

It wasn't necessary to see much beyond the initial sets of scratch marks, old and new, to see why such an uptight couple would seek out any kind of help they could. He remembered the helpless look in his mother's eyes when he came in hurt or angry or high; she wanted to help him, shield him, from harm but didn't have any idea how. That's the same look in Mrs. Guillory's eyes and it cut hard on an emotional level.

Neither of you have had any marks, cuts or bruises? Anything openly hostile to either of you or is it limited to visions, sounds or kidding objects? he asked the older Guillorys. The placement of the scratches and bites ruled out self harm. He'd seen kids who cut and bruised and bit and burned themselves due to emotional issues or trauma and what the girl displayed was assault.
While the injuries were shocking to see, and obviously traumatic for the girl, they were a method of communication just like the oozing walls and missing tools and visions. The problem was that the unquiet dead spoke a language unheard and not understood by the living. Frustration leads to escalation and attacks like this sometimes result.

Have you tried staying somewhere else for a few nights to see if the phenomenon follows you or of it's restricted to just the house? Do you have family nearby you could stay with for a few days?

For those of you who succeeded on the Perception roll, you noticed something about Samantha. Before she stood to show you all her injuries, she seemed scared about something. At first, it was safe to assume that she was scared about this whole situation. However, you caught her looking around the room several times and then immediately looking back toward the ground. She seems spooked by something in the room.

Since Max got an exceptional success (five successes), he gets some extra information.

Claudine returns her attention to Jay. "We've repeatedly gotten the feeling that we aren't wanted here. But neither of us have experienced any injuries. Not like our daughter has. The physical attacks only target her." She watches Samantha as the teenager sits back down and once again averts her eyes to the floor.

"Samantha and I moved out of here last week. We've been living out of a hotel in Uptown." Claudine looks at her husband, and Jérôme appears even more incensed. The departure of his wife and daughter is apparently a sore topic for Mr. Guillory. Claudine continues. "My husband, however, refuses to come with us. He stubbornly won't leave the house, not matter how much I beg."

She looks back to Jay. "Nothing seems to have followed us. The hotel is peaceful, and Samantha hasn't received any new injuries since we left. Whatever is causing the activity, it's relegated to this house."
Sep 14, 2021 12:55 pm
"Mrs. Guillory," Max begins, "you mentioned earlier that at some point during all of this you 'began seeing things'. Would you elaborate on that for me, please? Specifically, I'm curious about what was seen and by whom? Be as specific as you are able to remember. The key to all of this may be hiding in the details."

Even though he is addressing Mrs. Guillory, Max's gaze seems drawn to Samantha. He is paying almost as much attention to her as he is to her mother.
Sep 15, 2021 5:39 pm
Adriana notices how Samantha is looking fearfully about the room. Its almost like she can see the Krewe's Geists that are gathered here. She raises one brow slightly in curiosity and awaits a lull in the conversation to get a word of her own in. They have been very few in this meeting, as she is mostly observing and taking mental notes of the reveals in detail about the stigmatized situation in the home.

"Have any the three of you had accident or close call since moving to the residence? Is doesn't need be something happened in the house." She asks their clients with her slight Romanian accent, but looks mostly at the daughter.

'Could it be, she's one of us? She's a sensitive that is for certain.' She thinks.

The Impure shifts a few feet to see if the girl's eyes follow.

Claudine nods to Max. "Hmm... most of what we've seen have been... how do I describe it? Shadows. I suppose you could say that they're shadows. We've all seen them. They move at the edge of your vision. From the corner of your eye, you can tell something is standing there, but when you turn to look... nothing." As Claudine speaks, she hugs herself slightly; an unconscious gesture to comfort herself. "They don't look like anything or anyone specific... just black, human-like shapes. I've seen them in every part of the house, and at all different times of the day. My husband even once woke up to one watching him while he slept. He chased it down the hall thinking it was an intruder."

Jérôme furrows his brows and finally speaks. His deep voice has an exacting edge to it; he sounds like someone who is used to being in a position of professional authority. He also sounds more than a little annoyed. "We've already discussed this, Claudie. Of course it was an intruder. What else could it have been?" Mr. Guillory looks up from his wife and directs his attention to your krewe. "It was someone dressed in black clothing and a balaclava, nothing more. The police said that break-ins are not uncommon in a neighborhood like Carrollton."

Claudine shakes her head in exasperation. "It's not just that! There are other things!" She looks at Max and then the rest of the krewe. "Samantha has seen people. Not just shadows, but people." She turns to her daughter. "Tell them what you've told us, sweetie. Go on. It's alright."

Samantha shifts in her seat uncomfortably. She keeps her head tilted toward the floor but manages to glance up at each of you. Her soft voice has an undertone of dread. "I see a woman. She... visits me at night sometimes in my room. She looks normal except that she's all red... like someone colored her with a red marker. I call her Ruby." The teen pauses ominously. You all can see the goosebumps rising on her arms. "And she says that she's hungry. Always hungry."

Samantha stops speaking. You're uncertain if she's finished what she has to say, or if she needs some time to gather herself. Adriana takes the opportunity to ask her question. In response, Claudine takes a moment to think. She then shakes her head. "Accident? No, not really." She directs a query back to the Romanian Sin-Eater. "What do you mean by close call?"

At that moment, Adriana's Geist decides to move several feet from its original position behind Mr. Guillory. Immediately, Samantha's eyes dart to the side. For a few awkward seconds, she stares wide-eyed at a spot just above and behind her father's chair. Jérôme gives his daughter a confused look and turns to see what's caught her attention. When he can perceive nothing, he turns back to face his family.

"It's happening again," he remarks to his wife, before shifting focus to his daughter. Jérôme's voice noticeably softens in a way that sounds out of character for the man. "Samantha, remember what Doctor Glasser told you. Did you take your medication this morning?"

The girl gradually redirects her attention back to her father but doesn't respond.

Jay listens as the conversation back and forth provides a bit more clarity to the Guillory's story even though little of the truth of the matter is revealed. I know what's happening to you , Samantha, is weird and terrifying and beyond anything you or your parents have ever experienced. I know it's taking a big chance telling us, a bunch of strangers, what's happened to you. It's hard to understand events like this when nothing in your life prepares you that the world is so much stranger than normal life let's on. Jay shifted and leaned forward a bit to address Samantha more than her parents. Death, what it means and what comes after, is something that isn't dealt with in modern society. What's happened to you, Samantha, isn't okay and it isn't normal. This 'Red Lady' ...Ruby... probably doesn't really mean to harm you. She may be as scared and confused, as you all are, or acting out because she doesn't understand what's happening to her. We'll get to the bottom of what's going on and give you all the help you need.
Sometimes just the fact that someone empathized with those in need went a long way in buying needed relief. There was a time when his selfish attitudes and 'me first' mentality hurt everyone close to him and it only took dying to realize the error of his ways... In the ceiling corner, Long Man shifted in his spectral currents as the girl reacted to The Impure's movements calling Jay's attention to the girl's perception beyond the Veil.

Claudine shakes her head in response to Adriana's question. "No, nothing like that. None of us have ever had any close calls with death or dying."

When Jay asks about the therapist, she says "Dr. Glasser is her psychiatrist. Since she was very young, our daughter has suffered from visual hallucinations. She was prescribed haloperidol several years ago."

If anyone has the Medicine skill, feel free to make a Medicine + Intelligence roll.

Note that you can usually attempt skill rolls even if you lack the relevant skill. Simply roll the necessary Attribute, with -1 die (if the skill you lack is Physical or Social) or -2 dice (if the skill you lack is Mental).

In this case, if you don't have Medicine, the roll is Intelligence -2 (since Medicine is a Mental skill).

OOC:
For those who succeeded on the Occult roll, you know that "shadow people" are simply symptoms of ghosts trying to manifest. Most ghosts have great difficulty appearing to the living, and the best that they can manage are partial manifestations that can sometimes look like shadows. Like many other actions that a ghost takes, this typically indicates a desire to communicate.

As for Samantha, it's obvious that she's seeing something. You see no immediate evidence that she's one of the Bound, but she may very likely be a latent psychic or spirit medium. If so, then the girl may have no idea that the things she's seeing are real. Coincidentally, psychic sensitives are often sought after by krewes for membership. When Samantha gets older, it might be worth looking into recruiting her.
At Jay's urging, Samantha looks back up. She's careful to keep her eyes on him, though the teenager gradually begins to glance around. She's wringing her hands nervously as she speaks. "I... I can't really see them... they're blurry. I only see them for a few seconds... they're shaped like people... but not. They came in with you." She gives you all a look of concern. "I think all of you are haunted."

When Max pipes in and makes his statement about people with gifts, Jérôme appears to have had enough. He stands and brusquely interjects. His voice is raised but not to the level of shouting. "That's it! Enough of this!" He looks to his wife. "I'm sorry. I know that I agreed to give these investigators a chance, but I can't do it! I won't sit here and listen to a bunch of hucksters trying to con us." He directs his ire squarely at Max. "I've lived in New Orleans all my life. This city is full of fake psychics and so-called voodoo experts, and I know frauds when I see them. Either that, or you really believe what you're saying, which then makes me question your sanity."

Claudine gets up and attempts to intercede, but her husband cuts her off. "Mr. Thibodeaux, my daughter is sick. The last thing she needs is for people to talk to her about ghosts and tell her that the things she sees are real." He looks around the room and surveys the entire krewe. "What is it that you're all after, huh? Money, I'm guessing?"

Note that you can usually attempt skill rolls even if you lack the relevant skill. Simply roll the necessary Attribute, with -1 die (if the skill you lack is Physical or Social) or -2 dice (if the skill you lack is Mental).

OOC:
Yes, you can! Each Geist has a "Remembrance Trait", which reflects a Skill or Merit that your Geist possessed in life. By spending Plasm, you can temporarily access this knowledge. For a Skill, you can access a number of dots equal to either your Synergy rating or your Geist’s rank (whichever is lower). In your case, that means one dot.

You pay Plasm equal to the number of dots. So Jay can pay 1 Plasm to get a dot in Medicine. Lasts for one scene.

Keep in mind that you gain the Echoes Condition whenever you use a Remembrance Trait for the first time in a scene. But resolving the Condition does earn you a Beat.

You can read about Remembrance Traits on p. 100 of the core book, and the Echoes Condition is on p. 299.

I copied and pasted the Echoes Condition below for your convenience.

If you choose to do it, describe what form the Echoes take. Are they flashes of memory? Does it feel like someone else is controlling your hands or mouth? Etc.

Jay gave Samantha a knowing, approving look just before Mr. Guillory's outburst. You're right. We are haunted.
Kind of like you are but we work with our companions to help others. We're going to help you with Ruby whether that means she stays with you or passes on. Either way she won't hurt you again. Okay?
.

Jeromé Guillory's outburst cut through Jay's attempt to be reasurring to his daughter, bringing a flush of anger to darken his mood.

We offered to help, Mr. Guillory, you offered money... We didn't ask for it. Jay took a breath to reel in his emotions and try to be the better person, I, we, understand that there are a lot of imposters, frauds, and con men in this city looking for both more than to exploit situations like yours. I understand that you're just trying to protect your family from the kind of harm you understand. We're trying to protect it from the kinds of harm you don't understand... Samantha's right. All of us have gone through things similar to what she's been through. We have our own entities like she has Ruby and that's what she's seeing. We're not here for money, no one is going to know about this that isn't in the room right now so it's not for fame.
We're here to help your family. Nothing more, nothing less.
It was always so much easier when money wasn't involved...

"Mr. Guillory," Max replied calmly, looking the man directly in the eye. "I know that is difficult to swallow. But Jay is right. As sure as I am standing here, we can help your daughter. Those bite and scratch marks that she showed us? How much sleep have you had since you saw those for the first time?", he asked.

"If that isn't the work of a ghost, then who is responsible for it? It is a whole lot easier for me to believe that a ghost is responsible for that than it is for me to believe that someone is sneaking into this house and doing that to your daughter with you none the wiser.

So, please, my associate has told you that it won't cost you any money, but it does require your indulgence. You have to allow us to do what you brought us here to do..." and keep your slanderous comments to yourself while we're doing it.

Max left the last bit unsaid but continued to look Mr. Gillory in the eye, hoping that he could see that Max was being sincere; hoping that he would relent for his daughter's sake, and really, for all of them.

Max was convinced that the house was haunted. If Mrs. Guillory had made up the story that she told them, then she had done her homework. Everything she said was completely plausible. When coupled with the fact that Samantha Guillory appeared to be a budding psychic it seemed less and less likely that the two women had made all of this up. So, whether Mr. Guillory liked it, or not, whether he paid them, or not, Max was going to do everything within his power to find out who Ruby was, what was holding her to this place, and ultimately, to help her pass on.

"If you're daughter is sick, as you've stated, you can probably dismiss the scratches in your mind as self induced I guess... but what of the bite marks? Lets forget for a few moments you're basically saying you don't believe your daughter or wife and that they're lying for whatever reason and that doesn't actually hurt them because well you're you why should you really care right.

You've stated you've lived here all your life in New Orleans and you talk of money... well since you're a local man of means you're fixing the problem right? Because drugging with medications for delusions so your daughter 'forgets' the issue has worked so far right? You're also a father not just some suit that has to look good and do his job, forget your foolish ignorant prideful façade and actually help your family you damn fool... I know first hand what it's like to be left alone and being a local and having money to attempt to throw at problems doesn't fix the issue. So lets fix the issue together while you still have a family. Or are you going to have another outburst and throw a fit because now your feelings are hurt? I honestly don't care if you're angry or even embarrassed personally. I'm disappointed in you actually being a father because you should know by now it's more than just providing for them."
Derek finally states venomously from his chair, he slowly gets up looking at the man of the house putting down his bag.

"Look at your daughter Mr. Guillory, not glance and start thinking about something else more comfortable, actually look. Do you think you're being part of the current problem or the solution right now. I honestly think you need a wake up call... I'd slap you across the face but honestly that's not really my thing."

Adriana springs up out of her seat mere seconds after Mr. Guilloy does, with her hands balls into tight, white-knuckled, fist at her sides. She waves The Impure off, even as she struggles herself not respond to the man in like measure as he has seen fit to do to she and her Krewe.

The Impure wants very much backhand his petulant man-thing telekinetically into the wall behind him or worse, but moves at the bound's gesture.

"I need to step out of the room. Excuse me." She announces; holding back the burning tears that threaten to emerge.

Adriana moves into the foyer and leans back into a wall just inside, where those in the sitting room can't see her.

With concern, Claudine watches Adriana leave the room. Recognizing that the Sin-Eater is upset, she gives Jérôme a withering glare and quickly vacates the parlor. The heels of her pumps resound angrily against the hardwood floor as she walks.

Finding Adriana in the foyer, Claudine approaches slowly but gives the Sin-Eater her space. She waits a moment before speaking. "...Are you okay, Ms. Patrova?" Her voice is low, almost a whisper. From inside the parlor, it's relatively quiet. It's possible that the others got through to Mr. Guillory - Jay and Max with their measured pleas to reason, and Derek with his brick-to-the-face dose of reality.

Claudine looks towards the parlor and back to Adriana. "Please forgive my husband. He's as bull-headed as they come. I know he seems like a brute at times, but he means well. He's very protective of me and Samantha. His is a world of litigation and trial motions. The unexplainable isn't something that he's ever been willing to accept." She sighs. "It's not an excuse for his behavior, but I think... he feels helpless. Not that he'd ever admit it. He's angry because he needs to rely on strangers to protect his own child."

Wiping a tear from her cheek with the side of her thumb, Adriana looks up from the floor and into the eyes of the woman.

She takes a deep cleansing breath and lets it out slowly. "It most kind of you to have concern for me, Madame Guillory. Will be fine in a few minutes." The young redhead's green eyes follow the blonde woman's toward the doorway leading back into the parlor. "Angry masculine voices still cut more deeply than I am willing to admit to self. The marks upon Samantha and the strong words bring back memories I rather forget."

Adriana pushes her upper back up against the wall and begins to fidget with the antique bracelet again. "I am newest of my Krewe to this. Three years passing now for me. I always believe in the things many do not. I could feel them. Now, I know they are real—very real." She goes on. "Many learn too late. I don't want this to be too late. For you. For Samantha. For your husband."

"We can help. We will..."

For the benefit of those who are new to the Storytelling System, I'll explain what happened.

You can use Social rolls to maneuver an NPC toward a desired goal (in this case, gaining Jérôme's cooperation). To do so, you must get through a series of "Doors," which represent the steps needed to nudge the NPC into doing what you want. Each NPC has a starting "Impression level" based on his or her relationship to the PC. The Impression level determines how difficult it will be to win the target over.

In the case of Jérôme Guillory, not surprisingly, his Impression level is "Hostile." In order to garner his cooperation, two Doors must be opened.

Basically, Max and Derek's successes from their Persuasion rolls helped to raise the Impression level away from Hostile. Jay used his Reconciler Merit to automatically remove the Doors (which would normally require more Social rolls). Hence, you have gotten Mr. Guillory on your side (for the moment).

Sounds more complicated than it really is.

Social Maneuvering Rules are found on p. 153 of the core book.
Each of you pushes back against Jérôme's outburst.

Jay offers clarification and understanding, both to Mr. Guillory and Samantha, while Max appeals to the man's sense of reason. Jérôme initially seems poised to verbally lambast all of you, but he holds his tongue and listens. Jay's words, in particular, begin to slowly sink in. As the two Sin-Eaters calmly explain things to him and Samantha, you can see the tension in Mr. Guillory's countenance evaporate ever so slightly. His shoulders relax, and his facial expression shifts from outrage to uncertainty as he considers the arguments made by Jay and Max.

Derek then returns fire with a more forceful and provocative response. Immediately, Jérôme's anger comes back in full force. You watch as his face twists with indignation. He takes a half a step toward Derek, especially when the Sin-Eater mentions the man's "foolish ignorant prideful facade." For a brief few seconds, it seems as though the two men might even come to blows. Mr. Guillory, however, keeps himself in check. Maybe he doesn't want to fight in front of his daughter. Maybe he understands one against three is a bad idea. Whatever the reason, he instead holds Derek's gaze. While clearly unhappy with Derek's accusations, he lets the Sin-Eater finish his tirade.

After Derek is done and Adriana departs from the room, there are several seconds of awkward silence as Mr. Guillory locks eyes with each of you. He's not-so-subtly sizing you all up. Although he's still angry, the anger appears to have subsided in the face of everyone's words and unwillingness to back down. Strangely, Jérôme begins to regard you all a bit differently, like a trial lawyer that just heard an admirable rebuttal. Newfound respect, perhaps... as grudging as it may be.

Finally, Jérôme sighs and crosses his arms in front of himself. He takes a step back and rests his eyes on Samantha for a minute. Looking at his scarred and frightened daughter, Mr. Guillory's resolve falters. He shifts his focus back to your krewe, and his eyes now contain a mixture of skepticism and resignation. "Suppose I choose to believe that this house is haunted and that you can help us..." His tone has the quality of 'I can't believe I'm saying this out loud.' "What do you need from me?"
Sep 19, 2021 4:53 am
Claudine smiles at Adriana and gingerly pats her hand. "Thank you, Ms. Patrova. And bless you." She stops and listens. "Hmm, no more sounds of arguing. Maybe Jérôme has come to his senses. Shall we?" She motions back toward the parlor, but then thinks better of it. "On second thought, take all the time you need out here. There's no rush. But I'd better go make sure they aren't killing each other."
Sep 19, 2021 12:36 pm
Adriana nods and remains against the wall while the woman returns to the parlor. She looks to where The Impure looms at the bottom of a set of stairs leading up. 'I am uncomfortable with him as well.' She mentally communicates with her Geist. 'We need be on our best behavior, yes?. The daughter needs us and so does her mother.'

After a few minutes, the young redhead collects herself, brushes down her silk and lace blouse, and casually re-enters the parlor.
Sep 19, 2021 12:49 pm
It's understandable to be skeptical. Jay opened after the heavy weight of silence hung in the room after Jeromé gave in to the arguments at hand. We don't ask you, or any of your family, to believe in any of the things we do. We just ask you to indulge us using the rites and techniques we've found to be useful and helpful. To be honest, some of the things we have to do don't make sense to us as to why but they do work. A lot like the law, I guess, lots of things don't make sense but they can be used by people that know how to get the results they want. Right?
That's what you do to help your clients? It's the same for us. We use the supernatural 'laws' we know to help our clients. The laws we work with aren't written down in libraries usually, though, and we kind of have to learn them the hard way...
he sighed, not entirely convinced this would be the last time they had a temper tantrum from Jeromé. Dealing with the unseen aspects of reality often didn't sit well with people rooted in the perceived solidity of modern reality. One of the things we'll need from you is the truth.
Answer any questions we have with the absolute truth. No half truths, not leaving anything out for your benefit or others, and especially no lying. Like you expect when cross examining a witness, yeah. We're discreet and we don't judge. Harmful entities latch onto strong emotion and lies so let's not put you or your family in any more danger than already exists, yeah.
Jay let some other sink into the lawyer as he searched the man's eyes for acceptance or understanding.
Secondly, were going to possibly be searching through records on the house and property so we might need you to sign off of that if we need to pull official documentation.
We don't keep them if we pull them and the copies will be returned to you. Third, we're going to need access to this house since the negative effects seem to be centered here. We won't mind if you or your wife feel the need to be here with us. We understand that strangers, stranger than most, crawling around your home might be a little unsettling. Having one or both of you here, or your daughter, to answer questions might be helpful and hopefully put your mind at ease.
Jay looked to the others, You guys got anything to add? Jeromé was probably going to be more difficult to wrangle than the unseen elements in the home given that the lawyer had already triggered two of their krewe within half an hour of meeting him.
Sep 19, 2021 5:57 pm
"Have faith in us trying to help your daughter. Also don`t passive passive aggressively imply your daughter is lying when she's scared and has the courage to ask you for help... It's a Dick Dad move." Derek states before lowering his voice after his first sentence.
Sep 20, 2021 3:15 am
Max was relieved that Mr. Guillory came to his senses before Derek had to knock the man's teeth out and was happy that Jay was quickly moving the conversation forward. He was going to have to figure out some way to make his colleague more comfortable with charging for the service that they provided. Yes, it was uncomfortable to discuss, but Max had learned a long time ago that very few clients shared in that discomfort. That would wait, though. Right now, it was time to get to work.

The Forgotten had come into the room, Max noticed. Derek's outburst had likely grabbed his attention and now he was standing just inside the door. He didn't seem bothered by the situation, and his calm demeanor caused Max to conclude that he hadn't uncovered anything unusual while looking through the house. Mrs. Guillory, who had followed Adriana out of the room a short time ago, returned a few moments later.

Max smiled when he saw her, assuming that her presence here meant that Adriana was probably ok, too. He stood up and moved to intercept her, leaving Jay and Derek with Mr. Guillory.

"Excuse me, Mrs. Guillory," he said quietly. "Would you mind showing me the rest of the house? I'm particularly interested in seeing where the various paranormal manifestations you described took place."

Jérôme listens to Jay. Initially, he seems uncertain how to feel about taking directions from someone half his age, but he eventually gives Jay a look of approval. "You handle yourself well for someone so young." It's the first nice thing the man has said all evening. "House and property records won't be an issue. In fact, my wife has her copies if you wish to go through them. She did her own research at the Parish Assessor's Office."

At Derek's suggestion, Jérôme narrows his eyes but deigns not to respond. There is a rise in tension for a few seconds, but the tension quickly passes when Claudine enters the room.

At Max's request, Claudine nods. "Of course. Let me show you around." She looks to her daughter. "Samantha, can you help me show our guests where we sometimes hear and see things?" Samantha stands up and moves to her mother's side.

Meanwhile, Jérôme walks to the mahogany desk at the front of the room and pulls back the wheeled leather office chair. He opens a drawer and withdraws a short stack of large folded documentation. He puts the papers down onto the desk and motions to them. "Property records for the house, specifically deeds, easements, tax assessments, previous sales, and census records, as well as blueprints of the house itself and plats of the land plot. We have records all the way back to the Civil War."
Sep 20, 2021 9:27 pm
"I look into the blueprints and look for negative space." Derek states sidestepping and moving to the documents and starts calculating.

For anyone who wants to come, Claudine and Samantha embark on a walk-through of the home. The parlor leads into a foyer, which connects to a central hallway, The hallway is a major artery that provides access to all the first floor rooms of the house. A stairway in the foyer leads up to the second floor.

The hallway is tastefully decorated with a long rug, entry tables holding vases of flowers, and modest amounts of artwork or photographs on the walls. The Guillorys lead you down the hall, and, one by one, take you into the various rooms. Each time it's the same: Claudine opens the door, turns on the light, and leads you all inside. She then explains what she has experienced, with some additional input from Samantha. The rooms have similar furnishings and spacious layouts. Two are guest rooms. Another is a family room. A fourth is a large bathroom of white tiles and brass faucets. At a cursory glance, everything appears fairly standard. Nothing about the rooms invites any immediate insights into the haunting.

Most of what Claudine tells you is a reiteration of what you've already heard. Claudine goes through a list of her family's experiences in each room. She talks about seeing a shadow person in one area, or hearing someone say her name at another. Sometimes it's sudden cold spots, and other times mother and daughter simply have the feeling of being watched. Objects (such as car keys or a cell phone) occasionally disappear only to be discovered in other parts of the house. Claudine indicates that she thinks the activity is a sign that the ghost doesn't want them here, but Samantha says she thinks it's about getting attention. When asked to elaborate on why she feels this way, she replies that she doesn't think she can. It's intuition.

So far, none of you have seen any ghosts with your own eyes yet. That isn't unusual, since the dead will often hide when they know a Sin-Eater is in the vicinity. It means your krewe may have to track them down or flush them out. Many will also hide themselves from geists, for geists can often prove to be frightening even to their fellow ghosts.

You eventually make your way to the kitchen located at the rear of the house. It's a visually appealing area that you can tell has been professionally designed and recently renovated; like stepping into the picture of a kitchen from a home and garden magazine. It's a spacious room of marble countertops, hand-dyed floor tiles, stainless steel appliances, and light fixtures that resemble old New Orleans streetlamps. An island with matching stools is situated at the center of the room. Two doors open into a separate pantry and laundry room, and a third leads to the house's backyard. It's not difficult to imagine that this kitchen cost a small fortune to complete.

Aside from its expensive decor, something else stands out about the kitchen. Even if none of you initially notice it, your geists react to its presence by glancing up at it. Hanging on the lintel of the kitchen doorway is what appears to be a tiny cloth bag about the size of a watch. It's held to the lintel by a thumbtack. Given the background of your krewe, you all immediately recognize the object as a voodoo talisman - or something that looks very similar to one.

Jay took the tour of the Guillory's home with the others. He was more interested in the experiences in the house than it's luxury appointments. It was a storied house, as every old house in the Big Easy was, full of history and witness to a lot of change. This place was nothing like the homes Jay had lived in for most of his life. No dirt floors or holes in the drywall, no blankets for doors or cots bolted to the floor with cinder block walls. Even so, this house had probably seen it's share of tragedy and sorrows.
He shot a bit of a smirk back at Mr. Guillory after he caught the man turning pale while Jay handled a vase on one of the console tables in the hallway. Odds are, the vase was worth about ten times more than his Grandfather's beater he drove over in... He could feel the lawyer breathe a sigh of relief when he put the object back where it was. If anything ever caused Jeromé Guillory's untimely demise, Jay suspected he'd be anchored to this house and the things in it...

The kitchen was a masterpiece of too much money and nothing good to do with it. Derek, he thought, would definitely argue with him on that front but this kind of work was Derek's bread and butter. Or was until... Jay shifted from the thought of Derek's misfortune; partly because it stirred his own feeling and partly because he needed to be concentrating on the Guillory's problems. After seeing Jeromé's reaction to him handling the vase, Jay wondered how the uptight lawyer would react if the Krewe had to take a pickaxe to the kitchen walls or floors to solve their haunting problem... He'd be lying if the idea didn't give him a mischievous grin.

The sight of the bag above the door gave him pause though, Where'd that come from? he asked Mrs. Guillory.

He extends his hand to allow Adriana to walk ahead of him with Mrs. Guillory and Samantha. The Forgotten falls in next to him and they follow behind the ladies as their hostess shows them the house.

As they enter the kitchen, the Forgotten ducks down to rush ahead into the room as if he is trying to keep as much distance as possible between himself and the talisman that hangs over the doorway.

All of you succeeded on the roll, and RageRed got five successes so that's exceptional.

You all recognize that little cloth bag as a Voodoo talisman, or what is more properly called a "gris-gris" (pronounced gree-gree). Also known as a mojo bag, ritual bag, conjure bag, and satchet. This is a sort of medicine bag used in Voodoo to place a "wanga," or spell, on something. Contained within the bag are ingredients related to the kind of wanga you are trying to invoke. A gris-gris can be hung somewhere, worn like a necklace, or carried in one's left pocket.

Voodoo shops all over New Orleans sell these things for tourists. The House of Voodoo sells them by the dozens. The tourist versions are little more than mass produced trinkets made of synthetic fibers and filled with aromatic herbs. Nothing mystical about them. The one hanging over the kitchen doorway, however, seems authentic. You can tell just by looking at it.

Genuine gris-gris are not sleek or mass produced. Rather, they are individually handmade by a true Voodoo adherent. They are constructed from homemade materials and ingredients that are personal to the creator - usually things found around the house. This bag seems to be made of a rough fabric, perhaps burlap. The top is tied off with a piece of string. It's hard to know the purpose of the bag without opening it and studying its contents.

Adriana gets some additional information.

At Jay's question, Samantha turns and looks up at the bag hanging from the lintel. She smiles slightly with recognition. "Oh that! That was put there by Marie, our former housekeeper. She said it was for luck or protection, I think. Placed several of them around the house. She believed that there was something... dangerous living here with us. It turns out she was right."

Claudine looks at her husband and back to the krewe. "Jérôme hates them, but I insisted they stay up. I figured that they couldn't hurt."

You know the name. Marie Broussard is a member of one of the local Voodoo congregations with which your krewe has affiliation. She was the contact that informed you about the situation with the Guillory family and referred them to you.

When Mrs. Guillory explained that Marie had placed gris-gris in various spots around the house, Max looked at Adriana quizzically. The two of them had met several years earlier at Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo. Adriana worked there at the time and Max was sure that she knew far more than him about such talismans.
OOC:
If Adriana and/or Jay want to look inside it, Max will take it down and open it on one of the kitchen counters where the light is good. He would be less likely to know what the contents represented than either of them would, but he could help them to identify what is inside the bag. I am including an Intelligence + Investigation roll for teamwork in case it is applicable.

"Max, if you would be so kind?" Adriana glances up at the gris-gris. "Yes. We are familiar with Marie." She confirms for their clients. "This one appears to be for protection or warding. if color is an indication. I examine contents to learn more, Yes?"

Mrs. Guillory, you said that Marie Broussard used to work for you.... Jay was clearly fishing for the reason why she no longer works for the Guillory family. Adrianna said the gris-gris was used for warding and he had every reason to believe her assessment; she was a long-time practitioner of Voudoun. Her partner was the lead in the local voodoo group the krewe associated with. If she said it was for warding, that was about as definitive an answer asit got. The thing was...wards kept things in as much as they kept things out. Do you think these were keeping something in the house rather than keeping it out? he discreetly asked Adriana.

With Claudine's permission, you take down the gris-gris and untie the top of it, revealing its contents. As with most such charms, the bag contains an eclectic mixture of ingredients. In this case, there are dried herbs, small stones, several chicken bones, a vial of black powder, and a folded piece of paper with a verver (Voodoo design) drawn on it.

The herbs, which you recognize as mandrake and mistletoe, are for protection from evil spirits. The black onyx stones, as well as the chicken bones, are for protection of the household. And the vial, which you believe holds black salt, also offers protection. The verver is the symbol of Damballah; to call his attention to the home and watch over it.

Everything indicates a protective gris-gris, specifically from "negative energies." Nothing suspicious. Still, this talisman would've likely done little to help the family. The creator probably lacked the expertise to give it mystical "oomph." It was the right idea, just nowhere near strong enough to repel real ghosts. Also wouldn't have been strong enough to keep them trapped, either.

Derek

You spend a good amount of time toiling over the various maps and documents provided by Mr. Guillory. Experience has taught that it's easy to miss things on municipal property records, which can be densely packed with information. Older documents from the turn of the 20th century can also prove to be messy and illegible. Consequently, you are careful to go over the paperwork slowly and with a fine toothed comb. As you pour through the records, you can hear the rest of the krewe walking the house, and the muffled sounds of Claudine speaking.

Claudine was correct when she said that there were no deaths on the property. You, too, find no indication of deaths in the paperwork. Not that that means anything. There may have been deaths on the property that weren't officially recorded. Likewise, ghosts don't need to die at a specific location in order to haunt it. Anchors are about emotional attachment. One of the house's previous owners could have still become Anchored to the house, even if he or she passed away nowhere near it.

Property deeds indicate a fair share of owners before the Guillory family. The house is old and has been around since the late 1800s. The line of owners stretches back to 1874. The only time that the house stood empty was a fourteen year period between Hurricane Katrina and the day the Guillories moved in.

No record of a burial site on the land parcel prior to the house's construction. Strangely, there are no reports about spooky or odd phenomena: no historical records, no police records, no news reports. It seems like the paranormal activity only began after the Guillories purchased the home. No indication that prior occupants of the house had any paranormal experiences. Then again, it could simply be that the Guillories weren't thorough enough in their research and missed a few things.

One thing that does stick out, however, are several environmental reports dating back to the 1960s. Over the decades, various occupants of the house have complained to the parish government about the discovery of a mysterious substance leaking from the walls. Attempts to identify the substance repeatedly ended in failure, as samples would inevitably dissipate into nothing. Reports described the material as an opaque semi-liquid with a gel-like consistency, and with a foul odor reminiscent of rotting fish or decaying matter. After numerous examinations, the parish determined that the substance was not harmful to the environment or the occupants, and so nothing was done, but home owners continued submitting complaints to the city every few years.

As a Sin-Eater, you know this perfectly fits the description of plasm. You also know that plasm can be generated several ways. Sin-Eaters can produce it. Ghosts leave it behind when they manifest. And it occurs naturally at Cenotes (places with a connection to the Underworld). Cenotes are also commonly known as "low places" since they tend to be found in areas of low elevation, such as caves, subway tunnels, and basements. More than half of New Orleans sits below sea level. Some Sin-Eaters hypothesize that this might be why the city has such an infestation of ghosts - N'awlins is, itself, a massive low place.

Furthermore, you notice something else when examining the home's blueprints. You easily slip back into architect mode as you study the house's most recent floor plans. Those indicate a standard center hall cottage with all renovations included. However, you also find an old blueprint from before the renovations by the Guillories. This print is mostly the same but with one major difference. It appears that the kitchen used to have a trap door in the floor of the pantry room. The door no longer exists in the newer blueprints. Basements are rare in New Orleans, and you know that the house sits on raised piers about five feet high. Many of the houses in the Carrollton neighborhood have them; a countermeasure against minor flooding.
Sep 21, 2021 7:16 pm
Claudine responds to Jay's question about the housekeeper. "Well... Marie didn't feel comfortable working here after a while. That's not exactly unusual. We can't keep any workers. They get spooked by the activity. Marie lasted the longest, but even she eventually became too scared to come back. Her last day was only a week ago. She left those bags around the house just before leaving. I think she was... concerned for us."

Claudine seems sad for a moment. Then says, "Marie placed them at rooms where she felt we had the most disturbances. The kitchen is one. My daughter's bedroom is another."
Sep 21, 2021 7:26 pm
Derek sorts his papers about frowning as he works before standing up and stretching and heads to the kitchen to check the area with the new and old blueprints for the spot he's now curious about.

Lets see how difficult it would be to dig this up. Derek thinks to himself walking with purpose now.
Sep 21, 2021 8:21 pm
"Marie Brossard did have concerns for your safety." Ariana reveals from her findings of the mojo bag. "Everything in gris-gris is in order for warding against evil and protecting your home. I would, however, like see these strengthened by ones blessed by a mambo, once we determine what is manifesting and reach a solution." She listens as Mrs. Guillory tells them about others in the home.

"Are there more than in the kitchen and Samantha's room?" Adriana asks as she carefully reties the bag and hands it over to Claudine.
Sep 22, 2021 8:58 am
"Here," Max said, extending his hand to take the gris-gris from Mrs. Guillory. "Please, allow me." Max replaced the talisman above the doorway then turned to Samantha.

"Does Ruby spend a lot of time in here?", he asked her? "What is she usually doing when you see her? Anything in particular?
Sep 23, 2021 4:27 am
Claudine responds to Adriana's question. "Yes, only the kitchen and my daughter's bedroom have bags over the doorways. We've experienced activity in every part of the house, but those two rooms have the lion's share of phenomena. Marie has been a long time member of a Voodoo congregation. She said that the bags might help." She shrugs. "I was raised Catholic, but we're not really a religious family. Can't say I've ever taken Voodoo very seriously, but then again, I also didn't believe in the paranormal a year ago."

At this time, Derek leaves the parlor and meets up with everyone at the kitchen entrance.
Sep 23, 2021 4:49 am
Samantha seems content to stand silently at Claudine's side as her mother does most of the talking. You all get the sense that even before the haunting began, the teen was a naturally quiet and awkward person. Having psychic abilities could do that. Being able to see things that others can't see often had a way of making one feel alienated from the people around them. It's very likely that, for most of her life, Samantha has been grappling with the understanding that she's different.

When Max asks his question about Ruby, Samantha appears to shudder slightly. It's an almost instinctive reaction to the name. Claudine watches her carefully. "I... started seeing her a few months after we moved in. She appears in my room at night, sometimes. I never see her during the day. She's different than the other ghosts... the others are blurry... like the ones attached to your group. But I see Ruby really clearly, like she's a real person." Samantha begins wringing her hands nervously. "She just stands around and talks to me... asks me how I'm doing... talks about how much the city has changed from when she used to live in it. She calls me her little dove."

The teenager shuffles in place a little bit. She seems uncomfortable with everyone's eyes focused on her. "She acts like we're friends. Like a concerned aunt or something. But the way she looks at me..." Samantha pauses for a moment to collect herself. Claudine gives her daughter's arm a squeeze for support. "...her eyes have kind of a... hunger to them. Like the eyes of a wild animal. After we talk for a little bit, Ruby tells me to go to sleep and starts stroking my head. Then I fall asleep... whether I want to or not. When I wake up in the morning, that's when I find the markings on my body. I don't remember getting them. I just... wake up and there they are."

Make an Occult + Intelligence roll, if you'd like more info.

If you're new to the system, remember that you can spend a point of Willpower to give almost any skill roll a bonus of +3 dice. Only one point of Willpower may be spent per action, and the point must be spent before making the roll.

Also, if you ever want to make a particular skill roll, feel free to do so. You don't need to wait for me to ask you to do it. Worst case, if the roll turns out to be unnecessary, we can simply ignore it.
Sep 23, 2021 7:23 am
Adriana listens intent to the details regarding Ruby and her appearances. 'A ghost or a...vampire?' She can't help but think with the entity only appearing at night, looking solid and not like the other spirits in the house, lulling Samantha to sleep, and then biting her.

"Curious. So, this one entity is different than the others and appears material?" She ponders more than questions.

Jay listened to the further questioning, especially to the monologue Samantha had been prodded into. She provided a lot of the answers the krewe needed as Jay kept an observing eye on Jeromé and was readying himself to interject if the father decided to object or throw another tantrum.

I think Ruby may be latched onto Samantha in order to survive and intrude into the living world. Jay missed about the seemingly predatory relationship between Ruby and Samantha. I think she's attached herself to Samantha for essence to maintain herself here. The bites and scratches are just manifestation of Ruby drawing that from Samantha. Yeah?

Puppeteer, No worries about the prior cross post. It happens in PbP sometimes and I wasn't sure whether Jay would stay with Derek or not. I decided against that because Kay doesn't know squat about blueprints or property documentation and would probably slow things down for Derek.

For those who made the Occult roll:

Ghosts have special abilities called "numina." Some of the things described by Samantha sound like possible numina. There are ghosts that can afflict the living with sleep. It’s not a common power but not exactly rare, either.

Likewise, some ghosts possess the ability to Materialize - to take physical form for brief periods. One of the dead celebrants in your krewe, Crooked Neck Elodie, is capable of this. However, it’s a very rare power among Rank 2 ghosts.

As for the feeding, it’s hard to know what Ruby is exactly feeding on. It could be Samantha’s Willpower, or it could be Essence, as Jay has theorized. If she is stealing Essence from Samantha, it may have to do with the girl being psychic. That seems supported by the fact that Ruby hasn’t targeted anyone else in the home for feeding.

A ghost stealing Essence from the living is something you’ve never quite encountered before. You’ve heard of ghosts that steal Willpower or Memories, but Essentiaphagia between the living and the dead is unheard of. Still, that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. There are many numina out there that have yet to be catalogued by Sin-Eaters.

Based on everything that you’ve heard, it sounds as though Ruby is a particularly powerful ghost.
Sep 24, 2021 3:11 am
Samantha looks to Adriana. "She isn’t always a phantom. When Ruby visits me, she makes herself solid. I stop being able to see through her. She even sits on the edge of my bed and touches my hair." The teenager has a grave expression on her face. "I’ve seen lots of dead people. Since I was little, I could see them. But they’re usually like blurry photographs… hard to focus on." She shakes her head. "I’ve never met a ghost that can do what Ruby can do."
Sep 24, 2021 3:22 am
When Samantha brings up that she sees ghosts, Jérôme grimaces and crosses his arms but says nothing. Claudine watches Samantha with an expression that only a worried mother could have. She turns and looks beseechingly at your krewe.

"What do we do?"
Sep 24, 2021 8:27 am
"Mrs. Guillory, there isn't a single right way to deal with a situation like this. Things are seldom black and white. I have long felt that one of the strengths of our organization, perhaps its greatest strength, is our diversity. I have an idea of how we might proceed from here, and I'm sure that my colleagues do as well.

Do I understand correctly that Ruby hasn't visited you at the hotel where you have been staying, or anywhere apart from here for that matter?",
he asked Samantha.

"If that is the case, I would like to ask you for some time so the four of us can discuss our options. We'll put together a plan of action and contact you in a few hours to discuss it. In the meantime, it is probably best if you and your daughter go grab a bite to eat, do some shopping, just something to get you out of the house, and maybe take your minds off of this for a little while. Will that be ok?"

"Did the contractor's leave a sledgehammer and/or crowbar around? Also did you know about the trapdoor to a tunnel or basement in the kitchen right here?" Derek asks tapping the accused area with his foot.
Sep 24, 2021 2:17 pm
Jay thought maybe Derek's remark about the sledgehammer and crowbar might've been better floated after Max had talked the Guillory's into leaving them alone in the house...but there it is, all out in the open. The house sits on these anti-flood pillars so wherever the trapdoor you found might lead, it could probably be accessed under the house without tearing out the kitchen floor, yeah? As much as the idea of taking a pickaxe to the house amused the young man, Jay could hear Jeromé's arteries hardening reflexively at Derek's suggestion.
Sep 24, 2021 2:38 pm
"If a house sits on anti-flood pillars why have a basement? What happens usually to it in a flood? Who do you know that has a basement in New Orleans in their house? Also it's not on the most current blueprints so it's either been overlooked or hidden purposely I figure. I mean it's possible to check it out from outside but I've no idea how big it is under the trapdoor or if there's an exterior exit... if so someone would have noticed it by now wouldn't they? Plus if we try and use an excavator to dig out the possible area we'd have to look so we don't collapse the house if we don't know the dimentions it's possibly a lot of digging and possibly dropping the house. This way I think is quicker and safer." Derek states back not seeing the problem.
Sep 24, 2021 7:59 pm
Though Max directed his question Samantha, it's Claudine who responds. "No, it's been quiet since leaving the house. No activity." She looks at her daughter but stops talking when she sees Samantha's expression. The teenager gives her mother a guilty look and turns to face Max.

"She's... visited me once at the hotel. She followed me," says Samantha. She looks to her mother, apologetically. "I'm sorry. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to scare you. She came while you were sleeping."
Sep 24, 2021 8:04 pm
Derek walks by everyone and heads directly into the pantry. The pantry is essentially a large walk-in closet replete with shelves of canned goods, dishware, folded towels, and various other supplies. One small ceiling light with a pull chain illuminates the darkened room. As Derek taps around on the floor, one portion does sound slightly less solid than the rest of the tiles.

At the Sin-Eater's inquiry about tools, Claudine responds but looks confused. "Um... yes, I believe we have tools in the backyard shed. Why?"
Sep 24, 2021 8:12 pm
Jérôme glares at Derek. "Yes, there was a trap door
when we moved in. Apparently, it had something to do with bootlegging. It was built in the 1920s; not part of the original design of the house."
He glances around at the rest of you. "This home has no basement. The trap door led to an empty crawl space under the house. It's just dirt and silt down there. Maybe some debris from past floods."

Jérôme shifts his focus back to Derek. "Don't even think about tearing up that floor. Indulging your ghost hunt is one thing. Letting you destroy our home is entirely another."
Sep 24, 2021 8:13 pm
Seeing her husband's temper begin to rise, Claudine wisely intercedes. "Mr. Sixkiller isn't wrong. You can get under the house from outside. Although most of the space beneath the house is filled in by dirt. You'd need to dig your way through."
Sep 24, 2021 11:46 pm
Okay. In that case, Derek and I can try to see what's underneath the house if you two want to come with us or continue the interview & investigation up here... Jay offered to see where their interests lay.
C'mon, Derek. I'll dig if you Architect. I've got an LED lantern in the back of my truck and we can use the tools in the Guillory's shed. He took off his leather jacket and draped it over a high backed stool at the Guillory's kitchen island.
Sep 25, 2021 12:03 am
Samantha's admission that Ruby had followed her to the hotel wasn't lost on Max. Although, the tempers rising in the room again did manage to eclipse the moment. Before the situation got completely out of control, Mrs. Guillory confirmed Jay's theory that the space underneath the house could be accessed from outside the home.

That's good to know, Mrs. Guillory. Thank you. We can't be sure yet, but we may very well need to have a look down there before all is said and done. Of course," Max continued, shifting his attention to Mr. Guillory. "while we would have exhausted all other options before taking such a drastic step as to ask permission to cut a hole in your kitchen floor. I am glad to know that it won't be necessary to do so."

Before he turned his attention back to Samantha, he gave Derek a look that might as well have begged the architect to exercise a little more self-restraint. There was little chance, now, that Mr. Guillory would leave the Crossroad Kings alone in his home; however, given the latest from Samantha, maybe it was no longer necessary to do so.

"I'm sorry, Samantha. When you say Ruby followed you, do you mean that literally or just that she managed to find you at the hotel somehow and appeared as she has done here?", Max asked. This wasn't good news, either way.
Sep 25, 2021 2:27 am
Samantha looks at Max. "She managed to find me at the hotel. She said that... no matter where I went, she'd be able to find me."
Sep 25, 2021 2:33 am
Adriana fidgets with her bracelet again, as leans up against the kitchen island. "Samantha, do you have or carry something with you that you may have found in the house when you and your parents moved in here or something given to you, and antique maybe like my bracelet, that you rarely leave behind? Spirits attach themselves to such items."

Samantha thinks for a moment. Then she shakes her head. "No, I don’t think so. Most of the dead people that I see… they’re stuck to certain places. They can’t leave. But Ruby… she’s different. She comes and goes from this house as she pleases. Like I said, I’ve never seen ghosts that can do what she does."

The teenager surveys the room, cautiously. "I… don’t think she’s here right now. But I’m not sure."
Sep 25, 2021 4:22 am
"Works for me I figure we should check just in case."
Sep 25, 2021 8:12 am
Samantha's response causes a lump to form in Max's throat that only grew larger after the child answered Adriana's question.

"I'm sorry. Would you excuse Adriana and me for a moment, please?"

His tone was polite, but he didn't wait for their response before he placed a hand gently on Adriana's left arm and guided her a few steps away from the family.

"I don't like to think about the implications of that," he whispered to Adriana. "I thought that we would have time in the house here, with her safe at a hotel, but there's no point sending her away if Ruby can just follow along. This isn't something that I would ask under normal circumstances, but someone needs to stay with Samantha and I don't imagine that her father would be too keen on the idea of Derek, Jay, or I sleeping in the room with her. I'll try to clear one of us sleeping on the couch, and we can bring Roch over, too, so you wouldn't be completely on your own, but..."

Max knew that it was a big ask. The danger to Samantha was real and he was suggesting that Adriana be the girl's first line of defense. He didn't like it, but he couldn't come up with another option.

Nodding an affirmative, Adriana glances back to Samantha and replies in a semi-whispered volume to Max. "..Yes. Someone needs stay close to our sensitive. We do our best to keep her safe."
Sep 25, 2021 8:04 pm
Max smiled at Adriana and said, "You'll be fine. You both will."

He gave her an encouraging pat on the back and then turned to face the Guillorys. "I'm sorry about that," he said, "but it turns out that we won't need very long to come to an agreement on how best to move forward after all."

"My initial thought was to recommend that you and Samantha continue to stay at the hotel, but that was based on the assumption that Ruby wouldn't be able to leave here. It is not unheard of for a ghost to be able to move around as Ruby seems to do, but it is unusual. I had hoped that my team and I would be able to spend a few nights here in the house. I realize that it may be a little awkward, but it is necessary. The better we can get to know Ruby, the better we are able to help you."

Remnant says:
"Works for me I figure we should check just in case."
Well, that's settled. I'll grab the lantern if Mr. Guillory will open up the toolshed and show you how to access underneath the house. I'll meet you there. Jay excused himself and made his way outside to his truck to retrieve the lantern. As many times as he found himself digging things up in the middle of the night it was no small wonder he didn't keep digging tools in his truck...
Lighting the powerful little lantern, he walked around the foundation of the Guillory's home until he found the two other men. Lantern in one hand, battered porcelain coffee mug - the kind ubiquitous to greasy spoon diners- in the other, he held the lantern high to provide enough light for them to see. He took a bit of the dry tobacco and sage mixture from the coffee cup and scattered it along the ground. Always put down some tobacco as respect for the dead; sage for protection from those that wish us harm. He lit the top of the aromatic mixture and let it smoulder, And the smoke to cover the smell of basements and crawlspaces, yeah?

Jay and Derek

Mr. Guillory grudgingly escorts Derek through the rear door of the kitchen. As you step outside into the muggy nighttime air of New Orleans, several wall-mounted motion sensor lights bring sudden illumination. The lights are bright enough to make you wince slightly until your eyes adjust.

The walled backyard of the Guillory House is not terribly big, but in a congested residential neighborhood such as Carrollton, they rarely are. You find yourself standing on a brick patio furnished with black iron cafe tables and chairs. Surrounding you are trestles of flowering vines and plant beds of camellias, rose bushes, magnolias, irises, and other lush greenery. Enclosing the backyard is a high rock wall overgrown with hanging ivy and Spanish moss. Passed the wall, you see the upper floors of the adjacent houses. Somewhere, perhaps from a neighbor's yard, you hear the soft sound of bubbling water.

Mr. Guillory gestures to a small storage shed set in one of the back corners of the yard. When you open the shed door, you are struck by the smell of cut grass and gasoline. The light inside the galvanized metal shed is dim, but it's enough to get the job done. Aside from a lawnmower, bags of birdfeed, cans of paint, empty pots, lawn furniture, and other assorted supplies, you locate a plethora of tools. They are mostly of the gardening variety: shovels, trimmers, spades, rakes, etc., as well as various power tools and construction tools. You are quickly able to acquire the necessary shovels.

Derek and Jérôme meet up with Jay at the west side of the house. Almost the entire perimeter of the home is lined with beds of shrubs and flowers, but you are able to locate a gap in the plant bed that's large enough to accommodate your digging. Beyond the decorative foliage lining the house's base, you see the support pillars that raise the house up. They are stubby brick piers that are spaced every six feet and elevate the house about half a story above the ground. It's a fairly common design feature in French Creole architecture. In the five-foot high space between the ground and the floor of the house, there is a wall of packed dirt.

https://i.postimg.cc/hj5RQRFV/raised-piers.png
OOC:
The above picture is to provide an idea of what the piers raising the house would look like.
The dirt is uneven in many spots. Some of it is spilling out from under the house. The more you look at the dirt, the less it seems to have been placed there purposely. Rather, it looks like soil, silt, clay, and mud that has accumulated from over a century of flood water deposits. The dirt even has the same orange-brown color as the sediment of the muddy Mississippi - a color most New Orleanians know well.

Jay performs his ritual with the tobacco and sage. Jérôme observes closely but says nothing. Both of you grab shovels and begin to dig. You scoop out the dirt and heft it into a pile behind you. Each of you can feel Jérôme watching for a moment. Then, surprisingly, Mr. Guillory removes his jacket and places it onto a nearby bush. Claudine thinks for a moment, and then nods. "That's fine. It's not a problem. Whatever you need. We have plenty of space." She motions down the hall and to the second floor. "We have two guest rooms on this floor, and another one upstairs. Unfortunately, because there are four of you, that means two of you will need to share a room, unless someone wants to take the couch in the parlor."

"I'll start getting the beds ready." Unless anyone has anything else to say to her, Claudine hurries off. She suddenly appears energized and focused. Having something comfortable to do - something to take her mind off of the haunting - is clearly a welcomed respite for her. Even if it's only to prepare a few rooms for guests.

Once her mother is gone, Samantha studies both of you; her body tensing whenever she notices any overt movement from one of your geists. Her psychic perception, whatever it is, seems imperfect. Sometimes she appears to glimpse things, and other times she doesn't. It may be the result of her abilities being undeveloped given her young age, or it could have to do with the medication that she's taking. Many mood-altering pharmaceuticals are known to have a damping effect on extrasensory perception.

Samantha finally works her way closer to Adriana. She speaks quietly, as though not wanting her mother to hear. "So how does this work? Do you need to do an exorcism? Do you trap the ghosts? I'm guessing that it doesn't work like the Ghost Busters?" She has a second thought and then raises an eyebrow. "Or does it?"
Sep 26, 2021 6:35 am
Max rushes to catch up with Mrs. Guillory, leaving Adriana to speak with Samantha alone for a moment.

"That's really not necessary, Mrs. Guillory. Thank you, though."

"I don't know if Jay and Derek will stay, or not. They may have other avenues to explore. If that isn't the case, then I expect that we will take turns going home to sleep. We need to be alert while we are here."

"Adriana has agreed to stay with Samantha, if you will allow it, to keep watch over her while she sleeps. Any of the rest of us who are here will stay primarily in the kitchen. Those are the two rooms that Ruby seems to frequent. So, those are the rooms that we will focus our attention on. We might trouble you for the use of your coffee pot, but there is no need to prepare guest rooms for us."

Adriana grins at Samantha's Ghostbuster's inquiry. "There are many kind of spirits, ghost, or the absent as we often call them. Exorcism is the extreme and works more on dark things that were never a living human to bgin. There are rituals, if need be, but sometime it need a personal touch to help the deceased to move on. Every situation different." She conveys to the curious teen, who is not so very much younger than herself.

Leaning in to whisper in a quieter voice she adds, "Being in Krewe can be like Ghostbusters, but cases usually not so funny."

Jay and Derek
OOC:
Okay, successes on all Strength + Stamina rolls. Jay got an exception success.
All of you are digging out the dirt from beneath the house. Fortunately, the dirt is not very tightly packed. It's loose enough to make the work move quickly. Still, all of you start perspiring heavily within minutes of digging. In late September, the average temperature in New Orleans is in the mid 80°F with the humidity over 70%. The heat and humidity of Louisiana, even at nighttime in early Autumn, is no joke.

After ten minutes of digging, you all take a short break, though Jay doesn't seem very affected by the heat and continues to work unabated. Jérôme is dripping with sweat; his shirt is soaked through at the back and the pits. He wipes his forehead with his arm, plants his shovel into the ground, and leans on the handle. A pile of excavated dirt is slowly building as Jay keeps digging.
Sep 27, 2021 7:13 pm
Derek

As you take a short breather from digging, you suddenly catch some movement in the corner of your eye. Upon looking, you witness a figure standing a small distance from the three of you. The figure is just beyond the edge of the light from Jay's lantern.

From your vantage point, the figure should be a dark silhouette. Some part of your brain instinctively understands this, given that the backyard behind the figure is heavily illuminated by patio lights. Yet the illumination seems to pass through the figure, creating the appearance of a mirage rather than a dark profile. As the stranger steps forward and enters the lantern light, you see a sharply dressed man. An older black man, perhaps in his sixties, with closely cropped hair and an odd, shuffling walk. He's clad in a three-piece plaid suit, striped tie, and nice shoes, but something about the cut of the outfit strikes you as... outdated. The fashion of decades past. In fact, everything about the gentleman appears faded. His colors are washed out and muted, as though someone turned the saturation very low on a photo.

The figure has a sickly, unhealthy pallor. Nervously, he clutches a fedora at chest level with both hands. He noticeably casts no shadow.

"You... have... to stop," he laboriously says. His voice sounds hollow, like he's speaking through a tunnel. It's more the echo of a voice than a voice itself. "Stop... or she will come."

Too busy digging to see the figure at first, Jay hears the recognizable strained timbre of the figure's voice as it reaches across Twilight. Both Sin-Eaters instantly understand what they're perceiving. Jérôme is oblivious to the ghost's presence.

Adriana and Max

Claudine nods to Max and returns to the kitchen. She grabs a bag of ground coffee from Cafe Du Monde and starts brewing a pot. The room quickly fills with the smell of chicory and roasted coffee beans. Meanwhile, Samantha goes to the kitchen and takes a seat on one of the stools at the island. From outside, all of you can hear the faint scraping of shovels hitting dirt as Jay, Derek, and Jérôme begin their work.

"What's a krewe?" asks Samantha, finally. She looks at Adriana and Max. "You mean like Mardi Gras krewes?"
Sep 27, 2021 7:28 pm
"Okay lets stop digging real quick. If your house foundation shifts, well I've already seen you agitated lets makes sure you don't have a very good reason to start to be angry." Derek states looking around trying to get a a bigger picture of the area they've dug and the house.

"I just have to figure out," he begins looking at the faded one, "Why it would come here now." he states looking back at the house putting his hands up.

Jay and Derek

The ghost stares at both Sin-Eaters. He then glances warily at the Driftwood King and the Long Man and seems reluctant to approach. Gradually, however, the dead man begins shuffling into the lantern light while keeping his sunken eyes squarely on the geists. As he gets closer to Derek, you notice the dead man's Corpus changing. His skin loses its unhealthy pallor. His eyes seem less sunken, and his clothes regain their color and saturation. The etherealness of his body is replaced by the semblance of solidity and life. At ten feet away, bathed in Derek's liminal aura, he looks almost no different than a living person.

The dead man stops and shifts his gaze back to the Sin-Eaters. He's pays no attention to Mr. Guillory. "The Red Lady. If y'all don't stop that diggin', she'll come. Then there'll be hell ta pay." The ghost's voice no longer has a hollow quality to it. It sounds normal; the voice of an older man with a thick Louisiana drawl. You even smell a hint of cigar smoke and aftershave.

At Derek's words, Jérôme looks at the Sin-Eater with confusion. He follows Derek's gaze, sees nothing, and looks back at him. "You speaking to me?" he says.
OOC:
All Sin-Eaters have a "liminal aura." The ability is described on p. 99 of the core book. The aura allows the Bound to recognize other Bound by sight. To ghosts, the liminal aura is a beacon of life. In the presence of a Sin-Eater's aura, ghosts find that it's easier to manifest and use certain powers.

The strength of a Sin-Eater's liminal aura depends on Synergy rating. At Synergy 1, the aura has no appreciable effect other than to mark the Sin-Eater for what he or she is. At Synergy 2 and higher, the aura allows ghosts to use the Sin-Eater as a temporary Anchor, so long as they stay within a range of Synergy x 2 yards. Consequently, ghosts often flock to Bound with Synergy 2+.

Since Derek is the only character with a Synergy rating above 1, his liminal aura is the strongest and may serve as an Anchor for surrounding ghosts.

Sep 28, 2021 4:35 am
Grinning again at the inquisitiveness of the young woman, Adriana nods. "Something like that. Mardi Gras Krewes are secret societies forged by common bond and together manifest their expression of the collective in fetes, parades, and other events. Ours like that too, except we focus on our mutual experiences with the spirit world, in its many forms, and express it in trying help others on both sides of the veil."

Jay was a bit impressed when Jeromé decided to pitch in with their digging efforts. Clapping the stuffy lawyer on the arm in support of the man's decision, he sat the lantern down underneath the house to better see what he was doing and put shovel to ground. The soft, spongy soil of the river delta was a breeze to plow through as opposed to the hard, red sandstone soil of Oklahoma and Jay made short work of excavating underneath the house. Jay dug underneath the house to clear a path along the piers towards the trapdoor and let the two older men move the soil he turned out onto the lawn to avoid blocking the path he was making.
Jay kind of lost himself in the task, singing unconsciously as he went. When he'd moved in with his Grandfather after his mother died, the Old Man had him digging everywhere around the old ranch. At the time, Jay thought it was just BS busywork the Old Man didn't want to do but with a bit of reflection Jay realized it was more than that. It was a way to keep the body busy, work the anger and other conflicting emotions out of his head and heart, while leaving his mind to work things out without the distraction of those negative emotions. It also helped him sleep like a log.

The voice from the Twilight cut his reverie and he noticed the other two men had stopped clearing his dig tailings. Clambering out from underneath the house, he heard the spectral warning again from the shade on the lawn. Well, Hello there... Jay said to the shade, mimicking General Kenobi. He planted the shovel in the ground next to Jeromé's and wiped the dirt streaked sweat from his forehead before exchanging glances with Derek. Must be on the right track if we're attracting warnings... Jay nodded to the shade as it nervously clutched its old fashioned hat, You here to warn us or on Her behalf?

"Mmmmm. That smells great already," Max said to Mrs.Guillory when she started the coffee brewing. He had followed her back to the kitchen and was leaning against the counter a few feet away, amazed at how quickly Adriana seemed to be developing a rapport with Samantha.

"Your daughter is a brave girl," he remarked quietly so as not to be overheard. "I wasn't much older than she is when I started guiding tours to various haunted sites in the Quarter, but that was all fun and games. I didn't really believe it at the time, and for the first fifteen years, I never saw a single ghost. Then, one day, I finally did, and it changed my life forever. It's remarkable that she is dealing with this as well as she is."

He remembered meeting the Forgotten and taking the bargain, and how shocked he'd been when they got back to the city and he realized that there were ghosts, literally, everywhere. That had been more than a decade ago, and although he and his Geist had grown accustomed to one another, he didn't feel as if they had made any progress toward understanding each other.

He looked across the room at The Forgotten, who was standing by the window and looking intently out toward where Jay and Derek were digging; a little too intently, Max wondered? No one outside was making a fuss, though. All he could hear was a whole lot of digging. So, he shrugged it off as nothing. If there was one thing that he had learned over the years it was that he couldn't predict the sorts of things that his Geist might be drawn to.

"Well I was talking to you, but well 'someone here' is warning us that if we keep digging that way a Lady in Red will come and she'll likely be more aggressive than she has been in the past. I figure your daughter would appreciate us not making that happen." Derek flatout admits to the man.

"Now that you've regained a bit of yourself, did you want to elaborate and do you need anything?" Derek states fully turning to the warning individual.

Jay and Derek

The ghost of the old man looks down at himself for a moment. He seems fascinated by the effect of the liminal aura on his Corpus. He then looks up as Jay speaks. "This be a warnin'. None of us serve the Red Lady. At least not by choice," he says. "Y'all need to go. You'll only make things worse for the folks livin' here."

The dead man responds to Derek's question. "I already said too much." He glances around worriedly. "She could be watchin'."

Jérôme is still leaning on his shovel. From his perspective, he's observing both of you talking to thin air. His expression is hard to read, though it seems like he's trying to gauge if this is some sort of act that you've both rehearsed for his benefit.
OOC:
All ghosts have Manifestation Effects that determine how they can manifest. To appear as a full-bodied apparition to the living, a ghost must have the "Image" Manifestation Effect. Some ghosts have it, and some don't. If a ghost doesn't have the necessary effect, then the only way to make it visible to a normal person is by way of certain Ceremonies.

As far as liminal auras go, I forgot to mention that a Sin-Eater can spend Willpower to temporarily increase the strength of an aura. So Synergy 1 characters can spend 1 Willpower to make themselves an Anchor to nearby ghosts for a scene. Likewise, Derek can spend a Willpower to upgrade his aura to the "Open" Condition.

Adriana and Max

Claudine smiles and watches Samantha as she converses with Adriana. "My daughter has always been quick to adapt to strange situations. I suppose when you’ve been seeing things since a young age, ‘strange’ becomes a new normal for you." Claudine’s expression suddenly shifts. She drops her gaze toward the floor for a moment. Then looks at Max with a mixture of sadness and guilt. "For a long time, I… we didn’t believe she was seeing anything. We thought that it was mental illness. Depression or early onset Schizophrenia. We took her to doctors and put her on medications. But after what we’ve experienced here, I know now that she was never sick. Just perceptive."

As Claudine finishes speaking, you both notice your geists drawn to something outside. At this point, you no longer hear the sounds of shoveling. The Forgotten is staring out a kitchen window, and the heads of the Impure are gazing in that same direction. You can hear muffled conversation coming from the side of the house. Some of the voices are recognizable, but one isn’t.
Sep 29, 2021 5:55 am
Jay leaned on his shovel, the humidity laden air refusing to carry away the sweat of his labors, as he regarded the warning. You've risked a bit coming to warn us, yeah? This Red Lady, she's dangerous to the living and the dead? What's your name and why risk warning us? Is there a connection between you and this house? He wiped the sweat from his forehead again before attempting to explain to Jeromé, Someone had come to warn us if we keep digging the entity Samantha calls Ruby might try to harm us or your family.. Jay looked the older attorney in the eyes, the deadly earnestness and honesty evident on his face, I won't lie to you, Mr. Guillory. This warning is real and shouldn't be taken lightly. We said we'd help but that help won't come without some risks. Just know we're doing everything we can to keep you and your family safe.

Max cocked his head to the side and listened for a moment. He could have sworn that he had heard another voice outside beside those of Mr. Guilory, Jay, and Derek. His silence paid off a moment later when he heard the voice again. It was muffled and indecipherable; however, it clearly didn't belong to any of the three who had gone outside to check underneath the house.

"Excuse me a moment, ladies," he said as he started for the door. When Max stepped outside, The Forgotten fell into step behind him lending his Geistly stamp of approval to the action. It took a moment for him to realize that the unfamiliar voice belonged to a ghost, so fully had he materialized. Ultimately, it was the slightly confused look that Mr. Guillory wore that gave it away.

Knowing how cautious ghosts tended to be Max slowed his pace as he approached. His eyes scanned the darkness that was being held at bay by Jay's lantern for signs of any other visitors, ghostly or otherwise.
Sep 29, 2021 3:32 pm
"Also, since you're humoring us, if you have any questions for him about the house or the area I don't mind relaying the question." Derek adds thankful for the break.

Glad I didn't get into a fight... after slapping him in the face I'd be out of gas quicker then him... that's surprising... I need to work out more probably. Derek thinks to himself.
Sep 29, 2021 11:38 pm
When asked his name, the ghost seems surprised. At the question, he relaxes slightly.

"My name is... William. William Fields Sr." The dead man appears to get emotional for a few seconds. He looks away and clears his throat before continuing to speak. "It has been a long while since anyone asked me my name. It has been a long while since anyone's seen me other than the dead."

He turns his attention to Jay. "I got no connection to this house. I used to walk the grounds of the cemetery that I was buried at. Me and lots of others. A whole damned mess of us... just wanderin' around our grave sites. Trapped. Not sure how long. Time loses its meanin' after a while. The decades bleed together..." William's voice peters off. He seems distracted for a moment. Then continues. "Then came that hurricane... like the winds o' Hell. Worse thing I ever did see. The entire cemetery got flooded. Bodies washed away. I saw people... dead people... and they was screamin' like I've never heard the dead scream. Sucked into tha Place Below...."

William zones out again. He's staring off into space, and you can tell it's a struggle for him to maintain focus. As Sin-Eaters, you've all witnessed this before. He's Essence deprived. Ghosts suffering Essence malnourishment often show symptoms not unlike dementia as their mental faculties erode away. It could happen from Essence Bleed due to separation from an Anchor, or from spending too much Essence on Numina. Or the Essence could have been robbed from him.

"Where was I?" He thinks again. "Oh right... so I'm at the cemetery, and next thing that I know, I'm here. Same for the others. We been stuck here ever since." William looks at the hole that you've all been digging beneath the house. "The Red Lady has eyes for the young white girl who lives here. She's developed a taste for her. You get in her way... it won't be pretty. She don't care much for Eaters o' Sin."

William's expression goes blank again, and his eyes cloud over. Suddenly he puts his hat back on and smiles at all of you. His previous state of anxiety has completely vanished. He looks around as though unsure of where he is. Then he nods to Jay and Derek while appearing oblivious to the geists. "Apologies. I need to start makin' my way to church. Otherwise I'll miss Sunday mass. You folks seen my wife and son? I supposed to be meetin' them."

Max approaches from the backyard and stands on the other side of the ghost. William turns and looks over his shoulder at Max. His smile widens, and he walks over to the Sin-Eater. He pats Max on the shoulder, and you can hear the physical contact. Although the ghost isn't Materialized, Sin-Eaters are always solid to the dead.

"There you are! We need to get goin' if we don't want to be late," he says to Max. Then glances around. "Where's your mother, Will? She still cookin'? That woman and her étouffée. Always needs to get it just right..." He grins and watches Max expectantly for an answer.
Sep 30, 2021 3:05 am
Is there a cemetery and church near here? Jay asked Jeromé, partly to distract him from what was going on and partly to answer questions brought up by something the shade of Mr. Fields had said. There may be some remains washed under your house from a nearby cemetery by Hurricane Katrina. That didn't satisfy Jay given that the history of the house had it leaking Plasm before Katrina but it was plausible enough excuse for Mr. Guillory at the moment.
An idea struck him and he abandoned his shovel, still upright in the ground, as he retrieved his smouldering mug of tobacco and sage from under the house. Blowing into it and getting it flare with smoke, Jay fished his pocket knife from his mud-caked pocket and split his palm with the keen edge. He let the blood drip into the blazing mixture of herbs and forced his Plasm into the wreathing smoke alongside the blood. The heady mixture curled from the mug as it sizzled with each heavy drop, fighting the night breeze as it sought out the shade of William Fields and wrap around his spectral figure.

"She said to go on ahead. She'll catch up with us," Max replied sliding easily into the game.

There's no reason to get the guy all worked up, he figured. Besides, if you pay attention you just might learn something.
Sep 30, 2021 1:27 pm
"Well you two have fun at church? Which diocese I wonder?" Derek states aloud at Max, "That's if the church and cemetery were rebuilt after Katrina we might have to look at surveyor maps and the flow of water to guestimate a point of origin that may not be around any more... " he addresses SixKiller's comment.

Derek busies himself with the mental math of when the guy may have been from when he was alive.

Jay, Derek, and Max

Jérôme watches as the three of you engage in conversation with, from his perspective, seemingly no one. At Derek's question, he raises an eyebrow. You can tell that he's still extremely skeptical about the whole thing and is wrestling with how to react. Finally, he resigns himself to indulging all of you for a little longer.

"Maybe ask the ghost if he'd be kind enough to leave our home and never come back." he says to Derek.

In response to Jay's question, Jérôme sighs. "Uh... yes, there is. Carrollton Cemetery No. 1 is down the street. Maybe a block from here." At the mention of possible remains, Mr. Guillory's face goes slack. "I did hear that the flood waters caused major damage to the cemetery. It’s rumored that not all the bodies were recovered after Katrina. You think there are people's remains on this property?"
Sep 30, 2021 7:25 pm
Derek gives a shrug about to remind him this isn't the one taking bites out of his daughter when the man gives up some information.

"I'll ask if he comes back around he seems to have gone slack looking for his wife and son, who are likely also dead but he seems to have thoughts he's still alive. He's warned us to stop digging to not rile up the Red Lady who's been attacking your daughter. I guess she's one of the few she is seeing that have migrated here via their washed away body caught under your property...Carrolton Cemetery No. 1 you said?" Derek comments pulling out his phone trying to find the cemetery and who would have records of the bodies in the cemetery or the bodies missing from there.
Sep 30, 2021 7:48 pm
In response to Max, William says, "Catch up? Well, I suppose we could go on ahead of her."

Meanwhile, Jay readies his plasm. The opaque jelly falls into the cup and dissipates as the Sin-Eater ritually converts it to Essence. Although Essence isn't a discrete thing that can be perceived in and of itself, you can still experience it as an ineffable series of phenomena. In this case, derived from the plasm of the Long Man, the mug feels like it carries regret. If you could distill an emotion down to its metaphysical, quintessential nature, this would be it. Just holding the mug, you can feel tinges of the emotion wash over you.

The ghost suddenly stops speaking and glances back at the mug. Without a word, he turns and approaches Jay, and then reaches out to the cup. His hand disappears into it, and you see William close his eyes in quiet satisfaction. He then opens his eyes, blinks, and looks around in confusion. He stares back at Max for moment. "I thought you were... I could've sworn that..." The ghost rubs his face. He's visibly disoriented and upset, but he seems to have snapped out of the fugue that had taken hold.

William composes himself. "Thank you," he says to Jay. "She keeps us here to feed. We can't leave, and we can't fight her. When she ain't feedin' on the girl, she feeds on us. Keeps us weak. When that family first moved in, we tried to scare them off. We made all the commotion that we could. We'd yell, stomp around, knock things over. Anything to get their attention. But it's too late now. The Red Lady has developed a taste for the girl. She ain't leavin' that family alone."

He looks around at all of you. "She comes and goes from the Place Below. She comes from under the house. Like a demon rising out of Hell itself."
Sep 30, 2021 7:52 pm
Jérôme motions to the hole that you've all been digging. "Far as I know, the lowest point on the property is, well, below the house," he says to Derek.

Adriana

After Max rushes from the kitchen, Claudine moves to one of the windows and looks out. While none of the kitchen windows directly overlook the gentlemen outside, she can get close enough to see the light of Jay's lantern, and she can see Max speaking to someone.

"What could they possibly be doing?" she says.

As she continues watching out the window, Samantha suddenly reaches out and grabs Adriana's hand. The teenager's face is pale. "I have a bad feeling," she whispers to the Sin-Eater.
Sep 30, 2021 9:29 pm
"Huh, if the other ghosts leave first she won't have them to feed on until they're weak and have nothing left then she'll be looking for your daughter... Actually he says they've been trying to get people to move out on account of what has happened to your daughter..." Derek states his voice trailing off, "Shit we just fattened him up to feed her didn't we..." Derek states with a groan looking at Fields apologetically.

You do some quick research on your phone, and you find a website for Carrollton Cemetery No. 1. The site includes a helpful registry of graves that is searchable by name. Sure enough, when you search for "William Fields Sr," you find a matching entry. It states that the individual was interred on May 18th, 1961. There is an attached picture and obituary, which indicates a death due to stroke. It also states that he was survived by Phyllis Fields (his wife) and William Fields Junior (his son). Although grainy, the black and white photo definitely depicts the ghost standing in front of you.

You confirm that William Fields is correct. He was laid to rest in the cemetery down the street. However, the site gives no information about the current condition of the cemetery graves, or what other bodies might be missing.

Jay patted the shade on the shoulder, a reassuring grip on the old man's spectral arm, Thank you coming to warn us about the Red Lady and for trying to warn the Guillory's, Mr. Fields. I know that took courage. Do you know anything else about her? A name, her story, why she's still here? Jay had a feeling the flurry of activity at the Guillory's home and the presence of their krewe had tipped off the Red Lady and she might not be far from confronting them all.
We might want to get Adrianna, Samantha and Mrs. Guillory out here with us... he told Max and Derek. I don't think we should be split up if "Ruby" does show up and we could definitely use Adrianna and her Geist if it comes to a confrontation.
He pitched the spent contents of the diner mug onto the ground and covered it with damp muck shoveled from under the house. Mr. Fields? If I might ask, what's keeping you here instead of moving on?
Oct 1, 2021 2:41 am
While relieved, at first, by Mr. Fields' return to the present, his face darkened as the ghost shard some of what he knew about the Red Lady.

"She comes and goes from below, you said? If that's true... There are only two kinds of beings of which I am aware that possess the ability to enter and leave the underworld at will. Ghosts are not one of them."

He was speaking to Jay and Derek, and apparently giving no thought to include Mr. Guillory or to explain himself to their client.

"I better have a look," he said. The sweat that was beginning to bead on his forehead and his trembling right leg was ample evidence of his suddenly nervous condition. Shifting a little of his weight onto his right leg was enough to stop it from shaking, but with less weight now resting on his left leg, it began to shake instead. He closed his eyes and took a couple of deep breaths to compose himself.

Once he had steadied himself, he looked Mr. Guillory directly in the eyes and said, "Why don't you go inside with your family, Mr. Guillory. I'm afraid that if you stay here with us you are going to see some things that you would probably prefer not to see. Trust me. Go. Now."

The higher dots provide enhancements. For additional Plasm, these enhancements may be applied to the base effect. Enhancements may be added even after a Haunt has been activated.

Dice pool for Haunts is always [Synergy + dots in Haunt]. In your case, it’d be Synergy 1 + Shroud 2 (3d10). Pay the Plasm cost and roll. On a success, you gain the Haunt’s specific Condition (i.e., the Shroud Condition, p. 308).

Keys
You can also use a Key to unlock a Haunt, but this is optional. Doing so let’s you add the Key’s Unlock Attribute to the dice pool.
For the Key of Deep Waters, that’s your Manipulation (+3 dice).
For the Key of Chance, that’s your Dexterity (+2 dice).

You also gain a number of free Plasm equal to the Unlock Attribute. Only one Key per Haunt.

If your use of the Haunt matches the Key’s resonance, you get an exceptional success on three successes instead of five.

However, using a Key gains you the Doomed Condition (p. 121), which gives you a Beat when it resolves.
Oct 1, 2021 7:16 am
OOC:
Max will use the Key of Chance to add his Dexterity (2 dice) to the dice pool and give him 2 extra plasms. If successful, he will spend 2 plasms for 2 charges on the Shroud (Holding 1 plasm in reserve for possible use later in the scene. If it isn't used it will dissipate at the end of the scene). He gains the condition: Doomed (Chance, The Forgotten). The next time he has to roll 3+ dice on an action, he will roll a chance die instead and resolve the Doomed condition. If the action succeeds it counts as an extraordinary success.
Somehow sensing Max's intention, the Forgotten steps up behind Max but instead of stopping he continues forward as if he will walk right through him. His form swells as he approaches until he is just slightly larger than Max. Just as it appeared that he would, he takes a final step forward until the two of them occupy the same space. When they come in contact with one another plasma begins to cover Max as if it is condensing around him like water vapor on a glass of ice. The plasma causes his form to become less and less distinct as the pair crosses into Twilight.
OOC:
Max's fear is that there is an Avernian Gate located under the Guillory's home that Ruby, who he now believes is probably a Reaper, uses for entrance and egress from the Underworld. His intent is reconnaissance. He can remain in twilight for two rounds for each charge he spent on the Haunt.

Derek quietly says Oh and texts the last member of the Krewe still inside.

"Hello from outside, we're talking to someone who got washed over from the cemetery, nice fellow, family man, in the area a little while back from Katrina so good news we know who most off the people are possibly from, cemetery doesn't know the bodies are likely washed under this house. Bad new the Red Lady is probably not a ghost since she feeds on these despondent few and the young lady of the house."

Adriana hears the alert on her cell. She reads it quickly and with the lightning finger slides of an adept texter, replies. "Sam senses danger. I am not leaving her side. Is it done? Is the passage beneath the house clear?"

Max

Mr. Guillory gives you a quizzical look. Although he seems to want to debate the suggestion, he thinks better of it and places his shovel down. "I need to check on my wife and daughter, anyway," he says curtly. He grabs his suit jacket from the bush and marches back inside.

Though you've employed the Shroud before, it remains a sobering experience each time you use it. Upon activation, you are sheathed in your geist's plasmic body. The Forgotten draws you across the barrier between life and death, and into the frequency of Twilight. For the briefest of seconds you feel weightless, and then nothing. You are immediately aware that you feel… nothing. Hunger. Thirst. Fatigue. Your body is no longer registering physical sensations. If you gave yourself a moment to process it, the sudden lack of such input would undoubtedly be unsettling.

While Sin-Eaters have their toes perpetually dipped into Twilight, it's an entirely separate thing to be fully immersed in the state as you are now. Everything looks different. Faded. The colors around you are muted and washed out. Dark hues have shifted to gray tones, and bright hues have dropped their saturation. Even light itself, whether moon light or patio lights, have less brightness to them like they're pouring through an opaque filter. Sounds aren't any better. All the noises around you are muffled as though you're hearing them underwater. This is how it feels to be a ghost.

Only the other members of your krewe, the Sin-Eaters, appear immune to this effect. None of them are muted, but rather, beacons of life. Their liminal auras put them in stark, crisp contrast to everything else. If the world in Twilight is standard definition, the Bound are 4K picture quality.

With little time to spare, you launch yourself into the dirt wall beneath the house. There is no resistance; it's like stepping through smoke or mist. All it takes is a few foot steps to get where you want to go. You pass through dirt, mud, rocks, and roots, and enter a small hollow within the detritus packed beneath the house. The area is a miniscule space about five feet high and no more than a few feet across. Although it would be pitch black in here for the eyes of the living, you perceive blackness (and everything in it) in shades of gray. Piled together at the bottom of the hollow are the remains of six people. The bodies have long decomposed into skeletons, but still clad in their burial garments. They have been contorted and hunched together in order to fit completely into the hollow. A quick glance is all you need to see that these bodies didn't end up this way simply by floating here. Someone carefully deposited them in here.

Directly above you are the joists and baseboards that comprise the bottom floor of the Guillory's home. At various spots, a semi-clear viscous jelly is dripping from the support beats, almost like the wood is sweating. It's Plasm, which tends to collect at cenotes. And where there's a cenote, there's very often an Avernian Gate. Though you have no way of seeing a gate while it's closed, your geist feels it. Some kind of passage way exists here under the house.

William thinks about Jay's question. The influx of Essence from Jay appears to have restored some of his resolve. He is less anxious than he was at first. "Don't know her real name from when she was alive. Never told it to us. The young white girl calls her Ruby, but that ain't her name. She goes by somethin' grandiose... a title. But I don't wanna say it aloud." He eyes both Jay and Derek. "I know she ain't fond of the Eaters o' Sin. She said that she's encountered your kind before. Told us never to talk to the Bound or there'd be consequences. I'm takin' a big gamble speakin' to you like this."

William removes his hat again in a beseeching gesture. "I don't know for sure, but I think she brought my body here during the hurricane. I think she brought the others here, too."

The ghost turns toward the backyard and motions with his hand. "It's all right! Come on out! These folks can help us! You don't need to be afraid!"

For a moment, nothing happens. Then slowly, you begin to discern gray shapes emerging from the darkness of the backyard. The sight is more than a little creepy. A group of five figures move toward you; their pace and body language indicating hesitance. As they enter the light, you see they are shades of the dead. A middle-aged woman missing half of her face. A young couple with mangled bodies riddled by broken glass. A blue-lipped man with a waterlogged, bloated Corpus. A gentleman with a bloody hole in his chest.

William looks back at you. "The Red Lady been feedin' on all of us. We're all trapped here."

Max took in the little space that had been carved out under the house, horrified by what he saw there. He didn't dare linger there, though, not alone and fully immersed in Twilight as he was. The scene had was not one he was likely to forget. So, there was no need to study it now. He turned and fled from beneath the house as if pursued by the Chthonic Gods, themselves.

He rejoined the others next to the house a moment later. Plasm dripped from him as he hovered between Twilight and the demesne of the Living. There were several other ghosts present now, he noticed, but that didn't stop him from interrupting the conversation by blurting out what he had seen. If anyone was offended by his abandonment of social norms he could deal with that later.

"There is an open space under the house. The remains of six people have been gathered up and placed there. The underside of the house, above, is dripping with plasm. Something has turned the place into a graveyard! There is a Gate. It's closed, so, I couldn't see it. But, as sure as I'm standing here, it's there. I don't know if now is the time, or not, but we have GOT to get in there and... and...", he sputtered.

And what? Max didn't know what the 'right' thing to do was. He wasn't enough of a fool to think that they could take the time to help six ghosts resolve their anchors so that they could move on. Should they destroy the remains? The ghosts would be dragged into the underworld. If they had other anchors they might resist that fate, but he doubted that they did. If that were the case they wouldn't be trapped here. Reinter them elsewhere, maybe? Would that help?

"...and I don't know what," he finished, finally. "But we have to do something!"

You said she physically moved your remains and those of the others to the house during the hurricane? Jay asked the shade of Mr. Fields. Is she a ghost like all of you or something...else?. He felt like the krewe we're missing an element vital to the tragic story at play. An element that put them all in eminent danger if they didn't figure it out before the Red Lady made her appearance. He agreed with Mr. Fields that he shouldn't say her title out loud; they were both shure that would hasten her appearance.

When Max returned from his Twilight scout, agitated as he was, Jay knew things were about to get much more serious. Well, we know what the right thing to is but that may not be the smart thing to do.... He considered a moment, knowing their time to plan was dwindling. The right thing to do is get these folks' remains back to the cemetery and out of Ruby's control.
Digging them up will definitely bring Ruby into play and put us all, Samantha and the Guillorys included, into great danger. She'll go after Samantha before any of the rest of us, I'd bet. She's got something planned for her.

Max, you said there's Plasm beneath the house? We should use that to help feed the others.
he indicated the newly emerging shades. They might more able to recall information about Ruby if they're not starved. And maybe better able to stand with us against her.
Oct 2, 2021 1:09 pm
"Could she be like us but bad morals?"
Oct 3, 2021 1:54 am
"I don't think so," Max replied to Derek. Unsure if the question had been asked in earnest or not, he decided to assume that it was. "Nothing that Samantha told us suggested that she was bound."

Ever since Max accepted the Bargain that the Forgotten had offered him, he had grown accustomed to operating with a certain level of uncertainty. While he was alive, he had never given much thought to what happened to people when they died. He knew what the Catholic Church had taught him, but the reality of it was very different from that. Often times he found that the best he could do was to trust his instincts, and right now his instincts told him that they needed to get Samantha out of there.

"I had just finished telling Mrs. Guillory that there wasn't any point in them staying somewhere else tonight. I think I'd better go tell them I was mistaken. Ruby is likely to make an appearance regardless of what we decide to do here. I assume that she will try to thwart whatever we attempt. If Samantha is here, Ruby may try to use her to that end. If she isn't here, I think that we will all be better off. Any objections?"
Oct 3, 2021 9:01 pm
"Oh I don't mean a Sin Eater... I mean she has a foot on both sides."
Oct 4, 2021 8:55 pm
One of the newly emergent ghosts steps forward. Bathed in the liminal auras of the krewe, her appearance grows more vibrant. She takes on color and crispness, but so do the wounds on her Corpus. Chunks of flesh are missing from her left cheek and lips with only bloody flaps of ripped skin in their place. Her gums and teeth are exposed in a sort of rictus grin. She's young and dressed like a hiker.

"She carries a mask..." says the woman. Missing part of her face makes her voice sound slurred. "When she puts it on, she changes."

That's when all of you notice the flickering of lights coming from the inside of the kitchen. The patio lights also gutter and come back on. Even the screen of Derek's phone glitches for a few seconds.
Oct 5, 2021 6:04 pm
Adriana

Mr. Guillory walks into the kitchen from the backyard. He heads to the sink and starts washing his hands. Claudine looks to him. "What's happening outside? Did you find anything?" she asks her husband.

Jérôme shrugs. "Just nonsense. They're having conversations with invisible people."

Claudine furrows her brows but doesn't respond. She watches from the window for another minute before moving away and grabbing the coffee pot.

"Coffee?" she asks, as she tilts the coffee pot toward your mug. In that instant, the kitchen lights flicker slightly.

Drying his hands, Jérôme glances at the ceiling light fixtures and frowns. "Not again," he mutters. The lights flicker a second time, and Mr. Guillory shakes his head. "The electrical is on the fritz again." Claudine also looks at the lights but with a wholly different expression. One of dread.

Samantha's hand tightens around yours. The girl looks pale.
Oct 5, 2021 6:25 pm
"No thanks." Adriana replies to Claudine Guillory and sets the mug down. She reflexively glances to the lights and squeezes Samantha's hand. "Does the electricity do this when SHE comes?" Adriana asks and looks into the faces of her geist. "Brace yourselves. We may have very unwelcome visitor."

The dead girl's comment about Ruby wearing a mask cut right through to the heart of the matter. She's a Reaper.. Jay stated the obvious. Can we handle a Reaper?. He feared that without knowing more about the Red Lady, they'd have a rough time of it even with the krewe and their Geists. Ruby had previous experience with the Bound while they had zero experience with her...
Is there anything she, the Red Lady, avoids or cannot stand to be around? Any bit of information you might have would help against her. Jay asked of the assembled shades. The trembling, flickering of the lights lent a bit of urgency to the matter.
Maybe we should get Adrianna and the Guillory's out of the house if the gate is directly underneath it. I'm not sure if it wouldn't get pulled down below if Ruby tried to get at Samantha.
Oct 6, 2021 11:15 am
The ghost's mention of the mask was all Max needed to confirm his suspicion. I think you're on to something there...", he began, but cut himself off abruptly when the lights started flickering inside.

"Too late", Max said as he started toward the kitchen door. "Come on!"

He didn't wait for Jay and Derek, but he hoped they were right behind him. All he could think about was Adriana. He had asked her to look after Samantha, and he knew that she would. Unfortunately, she still thought that they were dealing with a ghost. He had to get to her before she figured it out the hard way.
Oct 7, 2021 10:56 pm
The gathered ghosts noticeably tense up when the lights begin flickering. All of them look toward the space beneath the house. Your geists also seem to sense something amiss and shift their attention to the same location. An active Avernian gate usually siphons Essence from nearby ghosts, which makes it easy for the dead to feel when one has opened.

Almost immediately after the lights in the kitchen flicker, the ghosts themselves also flicker slightly, disappearing and reappearing for split seconds at a time. It's like watching holographic projections that are glitching.

Several of the shades begin to look panicked, but Jay's question keeps the attention of a few. William Fields Sr. strains to think of something. He snaps his fingers as though on the verge of remembering a snippet of information. "Uh... I... I know there's... I know there's somethin' but my mind is too hazy..."

The woman with the missing face speaks up. "Green!" she exclaims, urgently. "I've seen her destroy green colored things in the house, or steal them. Anytime the family has something green in the house, she breaks it or takes it. But I've never seen the color actually hurt her."

"That's right!" says William. "She ain't fond of that color. It's the opposite of red on the color wheel. I remember that much from school."

Although your krewe's experience with Reapers is limited, every Sin-Eaters understands some basics. As Rank 3 ghosts, Reapers tend to possess obscure banes and bans. While the color green is perhaps a good start, you also know that it's too common for the color alone to be a weakness. Furthermore, you know that Reapers without their death masks are no more powerful than any other Rank 2 ghost. It's not until they don their masks that they gain a Rank and transform into full-on Reapers. As with all Rank 3 ghosts, Reapers (as well as geists) can exist in the Material World without Anchors and don't struggle with Essence Bleed. They can also travel in and out of the Underworld with ease.

If Ruby is a Reaper, it explains how she can come and go from the Guillory's home. She doesn't need to worry about staying close to an Anchor.
OOC:
The term "Rank," in the context of ghosts, is specifically an out-of-game term. I'm just using it in these posts for ease of explanation. Sin-Eaters don't typically rate ghosts by a Rank system, but they sense and understand that some ghosts are clearly more powerful than others. That said, occultists and mages have organized ghosts into hierarchies, and some Bound might use those terms.
Oct 7, 2021 11:14 pm
As Max rushes into the kitchen, Jérôme and Claudine both turn to look at him. Mr. Guillory raises an eyebrow. "What's wrong," he asks.

Very suddenly, the room starts to go cold. The temperature in the kitchen rapidly drops by a dramatic degree, as though someone just threw open the door of a large walk-in freezer. Everyone's breath becomes visible as small misty clouds of condensed moisture. Claudine hugs her arms from the abrupt chill.

"What the hell..." exclaims Jérôme watching his own breath. He looks at his wife. "Shouldn't be this cold in here. It's over 80 degrees outside. Did someone crank the AC?"

The heads of Adriana's geist stare down at the tiled floor in expectation of something. Fearfully, Samantha gets up and positions herself behind Adriana. Several appliances in the room begin turning on and off. The coffee machine percolates for several seconds and then suddenly stops. A radio in the corner spontaneously emits the sound of fluctuating music as stations quickly change. The ice maker in the refrigerator activates, rumbles, and spews dozens of cubes of ice onto the kitchen floor.

Claudine gasps and clasps a hand over her own mouth.

Thanks for having the courage to help us help the Guillory family. Jay addressed the assembled shades. You risked everything for us and we'll do everything we can to help you pass on if ... After we deal with the Red Lady.. His tone wasn't exactly hopeful of their coming out on top but he wouldn't let that stop him from doing everything in his power to help Samantha and the shades assembled around them.

He can't his eyes about for anything green he might take with him into the kitchen. He didn't have much time so he had to settle on the first thing that came into sight. Fishing out his pocket knife, he severed a good sized leafy branch from the greenery-heavy shrubs lining the side of the Guillory's home before dashing inside with the others. The cold air biting his sweat-damped, mud-streaked skin as soon as he slid through the doorway let him know he was in the right place. The shades said she hates the color green... Not sure if it'll bind her but it's all we got aside from brute force.
Oct 8, 2021 7:10 am
"I'll take any edge we can get," Max replied to Jay. Then he looked at Adriana and said, "We think we're dealing with a Reaper. Be careful."

If she is a Reaper, why is she doing this? Max wondered. Reapers are supposed to be up here hunting ghosts to return them to the underworld, not to feed on them. Does that give us some leverage?

Max didn't know, but as he'd said, he'd take any edge they could get.
OOC:
I don't know why it didn't occur to me to ask this sooner, but can we use plasm from a cenote in excess of the normal limits like we can with the extra plasm we get when using a key to open a haunt? I am wondering if I should have gathered it up to keep her from getting it? Also, I still have one charge left on the Shroud so it may still be possible to do so, if that is a thing Sin-Eaters can do.

'Not good. Not exactly how I saw the initial meet with a new client going.' She shares only with her geist. 'Guess we should be prepared to put on our game face. As Jay rushes inside, William looks at you and your geist. His eyes are wide. "She's here."

On cue, the other ghosts begin the hurriedly scatter and retreat back into the darkness. William watches them leave and looks to you, apologetically. "I'm sorry, but I can't stay either. If you can't stop her... well, she'll take it out on us afterwards." He nods and tips his hat in your direction. "Best of luck. I'll pray for you... all of you."

With that, William Fields Sr. quickens his pace and disappears through a rock wall.
Oct 10, 2021 5:05 am
Almost as suddenly as they started, the various appliances cease their spontaneous activity. The kitchen is now deathly quiet except for the sounds of everyone breathing.

This is when you see it. A form starts to emerge from the floor; rising through the tiles as though riding atop a slow moving elevator. The newcomer's Corpus depicts a Caucasian woman, once in her thirties perhaps, and marked by a slim build, aquiline nose, and a head of straight hair reaching down to the small of her back. Her clothing is several centuries out of fashion: a ruffled muslin gown with wrist-length sleeves, a sash at the waist, and a caraco jacket worn open at the front. It vaguely brings to mind the styles of colonial era New Orleans. Were it not for her menacing air, she looks like she could have stepped off the set of a period drama.

Most notable of all, however, is that her entire Corpus is a deep vermillion hue. She's not painted red or covered in blood. Rather, it's as though someone turned the color tint on the television as far to red as possible. In keeping with her name, everything about the Red Lady - her skin, her clothes, her eyes - is literal crimson of varying shades. Obviously, "red" is not a figure of speech in her case. Only her hair retains a strong contrast from the rest of her form. You can tell that, in life, her hair must have been very dark, indeed.

Claudine and Jérôme are oblivious to the Red Lady's presence, but Samantha definitely seems to sense her. She takes a few quick glances from behind Adriana.

The woman's bearing is strange; a quiet confidence that isn't often seen among the desperate, beaten-down legions of the dead. "O' Eaters of Sin? Perchance there is a reason you have trespassed into my abode, pray tell?"

Her voice is pleasant but forceful. She speaks with the self-assuredness of a being with several centuries of experience. Slowly, she shifts her gaze around the room and makes eye contact with each of the Bound. Her eyeballs have pupils but no irises; as hard as blood red marbles. "T'would behoove you to answer me, promptly."

She clearly notices your geists, but if she is concerned, the dead woman doesn't show it. Unlike a majority of ghosts, the Red Lady seems largely unperturbed by the presence of your Other Halves.

@the_puppeteer, Plasm collected from a cenote can't be used to accumulate Plasm points beyond your normal limit. That said, you could use that Plasm to replenish what you spent on The Shroud. You'd need to take the time to directly gather it and eat it, however.

Max watched with trepidation as Ruby rose up into the room from the little cemetery below the house. She was nothing like what he expected. Her strange, technicolor appearance and unusual speech pattern somehow supported her confidant demeanor. She was clearly accustomed to being obeyed.

Max couldn't help but wonder how long it had been since anyone had stood up to her and he hoped that they would be able to navigate the situation without it escalating into a fight. He quickly decided that the best thing to do, for now at least, was to play along; gather as much information as they could. He hoped that everyone else was thinking along the same lines. To that end, he cleared his throat and introduced himself.

"Hi, I'm Max. Apparently, the young lady of the house has been waking up with some disturbing marks on her body. It almost looks like she has been scratched and bitten by someone. Her parents are beside themselves over it, as I'm sure you can imagine. So, they hired us to help them figure out what is happening to her and to make sure that it doesn't happen again."

"We were under the impression that this was their house, though. Ms...? I'm sorry. If you introduced yourself, I completely missed it. With whom do we have the pleasure of speaking?"

Your 'abode' doesn't involve this world, this home or this family. Jay gestured back to the Guillorys behind him. We're here because you have intruded into the living world where you do not belong. This home might have been your own once but now that you've passed it no longer belongs to you and neither does the girl nor the shades you hold captive. We can help you find resolution and move on, if you wish, but this... he gestures broadly around, waving the shrub branch, ...has to stop. You're afraid of moving on or unable to and we can help with that but you have to understand that if you're unwilling to move on or leave this place and this family alone we cannot allow that to continue. Both the living and the dead clung to power (perceived or real) when they could because it gave them a sense of control...and that was something very attractive to the unquiet dead. Jay didn't think the Red Lady would easily relinquish what power she held willingly. At least not until he had filled whatever void kept her between the world of the living and the dead. A thought occurred to him, reflecting on what one of the shades had said.
What are you looking for here, Ruby? he addressed her by the name Samantha had given her. It's something green, right?

OOC:
In regard to Reapers, you all know that they have a mandate to hunt down lesser ghosts and drag them to the Underworld. This instinctive need to reap the dead is only present when they wear their death mask. There are accounts of Reapers that have delayed the pursuit of their duty for various reasons, but all of them seem to eventually give in and do it. Who issues this "duty" is not known to the Bound, or even seemingly to Reapers. Maybe it's the Chthonic Gods. Maybe it's the Underworld itself.

As for Ruby's odd appearance, there could be a number of reasons for it. A ghost's Corpus (body) is composed of "ephemera," which is just Plasm in its unmanifested Twilight form. Some ghosts possess the ability to manipulate their own Corpus: a numen known as "Moliate." The dead have been known to dabble in Moliate in order to make themselves look like they did in life, though those with sufficient skill at Moliation can reshape a Corpus in odd ways. It's possible that Ruby's red hue is a bizarre result of the Moliate power.

Alternately, some ghosts have been known to be born with strange features marking their Corpuses. These are involuntary on the ghost's part, and they can range from crowns and glowing auras, to internal organs floating outside the ghost's body. Usually, such a feature is symbolic of the ghost's life or personality in some way. For instance, a ghost that felt the weight of major responsibilities in life might find that in death, much like Jacob Marley, her Corpus is wrapped in thick, heavy chains.

Sin-Eaters refer to these features as "iconographies." No one knows what causes them, or why some ghosts have them and others don't. The leading theory is that the ghost subconsciously molds its own Corpus to reflect a deep-seated fear, regret, or desire. Thus, Ruby's appearance could be some form of iconography.
Oct 11, 2021 9:40 pm
Ruby slowly shifts her gaze to Max when he begins speaking. Something about the gradual turning of her head reminds you of a tank turret swiveling to acquire a target. When he asks her name, she raises an eyebrow.

"Long has it been since my name has been asked of me. You must be a Frenchman..." She bends her knees and bows her head slightly. The gesture looks very strange coming from her. "In days of old, I was known as Lady Marguerite de Clouet, Viscountess de la Ronde... but that was long ago..."

At Max's question, she says "I have been ingressing and egressing from this location long before there was a home built upon it. Many of the living have dwelled here through the years, but I never paid them much mind. They are not my charge." She gives Claudine and Jérôme a look of utter disdain. They clearly have little value in her eyes. "After the great storm whence came the floods, I found the place abandoned, and so it became my staging ground."

As Ruby speaks, she starts looking at your geists, almost assessing them. She regards Adriana's geist the most closely. "T'was naught but myself in this abode... until the arrival of the barrister and his kin. They intrude upon me, not I upon them."

At this point Ruby's manner has been genteel, although maybe with an edge of warning to it. She seems to be adhering to some old sense of courtesy, perhaps a relic of her upbringing. When Jay addresses her, however, the ghost's demeanor rapidly changes. "I go where I wish, Eater of Sin," she says with a snarl. When he waves the branch, Ruby's eyes narrow. You even see her lean slightly away from him.

Max has the Doomed condition from the key of chance. I considered spending a willpower point on this roll, but wasn't sure if those dice would be considered bonus dice or not. If so, that would force me to roll a chance die instead and would resolve the condition. I decided I'd better not do that without having that clarified first.
OOC:
I don't believe the Doom would yet apply. I think the reference to bonus dice means any extra dice bestowed by Merits, equipment, or supernatural abilities. A dice pool consisting of your base Skill + Attribute will be unaffected. At least that's my understanding of it, so the roll is fine as is.

@ Gnome_Chomsky, Would any of us have a possible chance of having heard of the Viscountess de la Ronde? The Impure predate her I think.

It's possible. Anyone may make an Academics + Intelligence roll, if they'd like. -2 penalty if you don't have the skill.

Ruby looks from Max to Jay. She's eyeing the branch with caution. Though she tries to mask it, the presence of the green leaves on the branch seems to put her slightly on edge.

She looks to Jay. "I seek nothing other than your removal from this premises. Leave, and I'll be forbearing about your impertinence."

Ruby looks at Max. "The concerns of the living are not mine own. The girl is sustenance for me... that is the chiminage she pays to remain here. Her parents, however, have no value to me." The Red Lady turns her attention to Samantha. She tilts her head in order to see the teenager, who currently hides behind Adriana.

"Little Dove," beckons Ruby in a melodic tone. There is a practiced softness in her voice; the kind reserved for when adult speaks to a child. "Little Dove... why do you hide from me? Come out, come out. Remember your manners."

Samantha doesn't budge. Ruby sighs and speaks again. "Little Dove... come to me, or I will make your parents suffer."

Slowly, the teenager emerges from behind Adriana. The blood seems to have drained from her face.

Jérôme and Claudine look at each other. From their perspective, you're all talking to thin air.

Mr. Guillory glances at all of you. "Am I to assume that you're speaking to her right now?" There's still an annoying edge of skepticism to his voice. "Maybe this spirit should show herself if she's so powerful. I'm not afraid."

He takes a few steps forward in a show of bravado. He speaks toward the center of the room where the eyes of the krewe have been focused. "Well? What do you say... spirit?" Jérôme says spirit derisively, the way Richard Nixon would have said communists. His eyes are wandering; waiting for a response.

Before Max responds I would like to take you up on that Intelligence + Academics test. It's not in his wheelhouse, exactly, but he does have the skill.

Rolls

Intelligence (2) + Academics (1) - (3d10, RA)

(483) = 15

For anyone who succeeds on the roll,

The Viscountess' name sounds vaguely familiar. You recall a Viscountess de la Rhonde that existed in early New Orleans history. She resided in the city not long after its founding as a French colony, before Louisiana became the property of Spain. She came from an aristocratic family that had a considerable fortune tied up in textiles. In particular, her family was known for producing red-colored clothing for rich customers. In the 1700s, red dye was difficult to make, and thus, regarded to be an expensive luxury.

Supposedly, the Viscountess was a very colorful figure (no pun intended). She was known for partying, gambling and for having various extramarital affairs. She was murdered by her husband, who stabbed her to death in a fit of jealous rage. The murder weapon was said to be a green-handled blade.

It seems quite likely that this could be the same woman. If anyone gets an exceptional success, that'll earn you extra information.

Wait a minute", Max interjected. He had just realized two things. The first was that he recognized the name Ruby had given them when she introduced herself. The second was that they had no chance of convincing Ruby to leave Samantha alone unless she decided that it was in her best interest to do so.

Max wasn't about to let her have Samantha, but he only had one idea that might deter Ruby and no idea whether or not it would work. First, though, he had to make sure the other members of his Krewe knew who Ruby was and what it would take to stop her. If this didn't work out he'd try to buy them enough time to get the Guillory's away from the house.

You are telling us that you are the Viscountess de la Rhonde? When I was in high school I took a course on local history. There was a Viscountess de la Rhonde who lived in New Orleans not long after the city was established. Her family was in the textile business and made their fortune selling an expensive red fabric. According to the history books, she was killed by her husband after he discovered that she had been cheating on him. They say he used a green-handled knife to do the deed, but I think that's just a--",.

He stopped abruptly, the excitement fading quickly from his expression.

"No... what I am thinking. The Viscountess de la Rhonde died roughly three hundred years ago. She would have passed on long ago.

Max sighed and shook his head. Then, falling back into a more professional demeanor he looked at Mr. Guillory and said, "I'm sorry, sir. I don't think that she is capable of showing herself. She has threatened to make you and your wife suffer if Samantha doesn't cooperate with her," Max turned back to face Ruby as he continued.

"But the thing is, I know for a fact that she has already lied to us at least once." He continued as if he were speaking to Mr. Guillory, but his eyes remain focused on Ruby. "She has also offered contradictory statements with respect to why she believes she has a rightful claim to this property. So, while I do not yet know whether only one or both of those statements are untrue, I am not inclined to believe anything she says."

He took a step closer to Ruby, clearly addressing her directly now.

"It's really a shame because I was hoping that we might be able to reach an agreement that would satisfy everyone. One way or another, we are not going to allow this to continue. If you can't be honest with us and make a sincere effort to work this out, then you can explain what you are doing here to the Reapers.

Personally, I avoid dealing with Reapers as much as possible. So, I don't know what they will do when they find out that yous put a little cemetery together underneath a house to create an Avernian gate, and that you use that gate to come and go from the underworld as you please. I'm not sure what they'll think about how you maintain your essence on these little jaunts into twilight, either.

You've been around a long time, though, right? I bet you know what they'll do. So, tell me. Would you rather work this out with us, or with them?"

Jay's response to the Red Lady had been measured and cautious for the sake of the Guillory family and the shades under her thrall. He honestly didn't care who the red tinted spectre thought she was although he appreciated that Max teased out of her who she'd been. 'Knowing is half the battle's, as they say...
While Max addressed the Red Lady and low-key threatened her with turning her location over to Reapers, Jay made his way to Samantha and placed the greenery he held into her hand. He still wasn't sure what exactly what kind of protection the color would afford the girl but he knew Samantha and her family would need it more than he would. They were helpless and defenseless against the Red Lady whilst the krewe had their Geists and other supernatural defenses.
I don't know how much this'll help.... Jay said to Samantha under his breath to the girl as Max monologued on to the 'Viscountess'. She has some kind of hang up about the color green. Keep this between you, your family and her. Be brave for them.

Turning to Mrs. Guillory, he mumbled under his breath, Try, as inconspicuously as you can, to get something green, for you and your husband, and hold it on your person.
