Unread (verb) location/order

I am not sure the new Unread 'button' is in the 'correct' location.

Not only might it get clicked, a lot, when people are wanting to Quote --a common action, and habit for that leftmost location-- but it seems to me they should be in order of most likely to be used first, and this is probably a rarely used thing.

I propose it be moved to the end of the list rather than the head.

What do we think?

Moving it to the right would mean that the existing buttons change their position, rather than just a new one being added (especially since Unread isn't on every post, meaning that delete or quote are in different locations on different posts).

That seems more likely to me to create misclicks

Good point...

Though, don't they move around already? And they already do it from the rightmost as well. The Edit and Delete buttons only appear on some posts, Quote is in the only universal one.

It seems to me that the first one we see is the left most button on the bottom post, and Quote is probably the most commonly desired action in that situation. But that is just my thoughts after having to dodge the new Unread that is now where I expect the Quote to be.
Maybe it can go all the way over on the left of the screen since it is not really the same thing as the other buttons there? That would mean more programming then just changing the order, though.

Yea, that's true. Unless you're a GM, you can only edit and delete your own posts. Still, that's two options for what can be under posts. One of which only has a single option. Adding unread in the mix, you have four options.

To me, Unread reads clearly as a new addition so I don't have that issue you have. If Unread was on the right, then I would get confused because the buttons aren't in their original positions anymore 😄

It's probably an issue of personal preference, rather than something universal. What do the others think?

When I first coded it, I put it on the right. I didn't like it there (for the reasons bowlofspinach has outlined) - so I moved it over.

Would it be better with a.keepUnread {float: left;} - I don't know.

Perhaps see if we get any feedback from users on discord once people have used it for a bit?

I am trying not to let my habit of Quote being the one on the left influence this. :) That habit can change and I am trying to view this from the perspective of someone new, and what would make sense without the habit.

Our conflicting views based on our personal habits does sorta enforce that the Unread button does not fit with that group, it serves a very different function to the others, and maybe should appear elsewhere?

Ooh, yes, that was simple enough and does look much better, in my opinion.

I like it there on the left, yes. Elegant solution.

Sure, left is fine. What happens when you click it, it marks the thread as unread? If so, perhaps the text is "Mark as Unread"?

No it unreads the thread, it resets the world to a point where you have not read the thread, you are no longer allowed to act on the information in the thread for fear of meta-gaming...

Um, yeah. It changes the way the thread is displayed so it looks like there is new stuff. People use it as a reminder to come back to a thread they are not finished assimilating.

If it moves to the left then there is more space available, and using less unclear wording (and/or an icon?) would help.

I agree that "Mark as unread" is better.
