Remove Frames around Profile Pictures

Sep 19, 2021 8:39 pm
On a roll of making bad suggestions here 😁

My current profile picture doesn't have a transparent background but the one before did. And it would have looked much nicer without the frame around it. Would it be a problem (functionally or aesthetically) to just remove the frame around profile pictures next to posts? It shouldn't make much of a difference for non-transparent background pics and it would look much nicer on transparent background pics

I did propose that (and create a pull request for it) a while ago. Keleth and I discussed it a bit but then it fell off the radar. This was before this council and we both wanted to get more user feedback.

Perhaps we can readdress it. Do we want this for both light and dark themes?

I proposed applying this to the small icons above character portraits too.

As an example, We would have:

Instead of:

I also plan to fix the lack of transparency on the user page's portrait, it currently forces a white background there as well.
If there are any other places this shows up please let us know (after finding the user page one --after the latest update-- I planned to do a code search for all the instances instead of looking around in the browser, else I would probably have done that change already). :/

Yes, that's exactly what I meant, both for the mini version if you post as a character and for the regular one if you post as yourself.

How would it look with non-white, non-transparent backgrounds. Bowlofspinach's for example appears to be a bone white background.

I think it's a good idea.

Can we get some opinions on this for the light theme?

I want to push forward on removing the borders from the dark theme, but it will be slightly easier to do it for both at the same time.

I think it’s a good idea (for both).

There is also a border and a forced white background on the top right profile picture on the permanent top-bar. Since this is in a light grey bar and has a unique orange border it looks weird if I remove the background and leave the border, but also looks weird without a border there.

The borders kinda-sorta work on the light theme?
On a related note (not sure if it needs its own thread) should we look into changing the color of the light top bar on the dark theme? I unpin it so it scrolls out of view, so it does not bother me.
There is branding stuff in there which complicates the recolor.

The profile picture in the top bar also doesn't have a transparent background, if I remember correctly from my previous profile picture. Might be worth fixing if we remove that frame.
I personally don't mind the color but it would be more fitting to make it darker on dark mode as well

I'm fine either way. If someone doesn't like the borderless option, they can edit their own border onto their pic.

It does have, but we are forcing a white background behind it so 'transparent' looks white. I can fix that, but then that bar will have a light grey transparent background.

I can remove the border, but that might make it a little hard to see that it an interactive element and not just a floating image.

I feel the same. Let's see if anyone else has strong feelings about changing it, then we can look at it.

That is a good point I did not consider. Maybe keep the border up there. And if you keep the border, forcing the background might not be worst thing either. Though it could still use transparent up there, even with the border
