Moving some things from advanced posting

Oct 2, 2021 12:51 pm
We've talked about this before on discord, but moving some options (dice, char sheets, preview) to the quick reply.

I don't know about you but I need the options in advanced posting, but I need to have two tabs open just to remember what's going on. This is a pain on mobile devices.

The code isn't well componentised for this kind of refactoring, so it's not trivial to code, but worth it?

How about a tool library, pop-up library of examples? Like a tooltip, or maybe just opens a new tab.

Sure, it's opening a new window or tab, but you could have prebuilt examples, one for D&D5/Pathfinder, one for loop, one for AGE, etc.

Edit: Sorry, got confused I was thinking of the Advanced Rules Definitions for some reason. Carry on.

Yes!

With those things moved to the regular reply... do we need the advanced at all? I never understood why we had them hidden behind an extra click (which hides the context of the thread, to boot, but that is probably a bug). A 'quick reply' option seems like a good idea, but is misplaced on a PbP site?

Would be awesome. On a related note, I'd like if preview already rendered as a full post, with the avatar and everything, rather than just the formatted text.
Maybe if we integrate preview on the thread page, it could just already show up at the bottom of the existing thread (with some very visible markers to remind you that it's not posted yet.

The preview also lays some things out differently. I don't recall which elements, but I found it to be inconsistent enough that I took to having a dummy post that I just edit each time I think there is a need to preview what something will look like (hence no remembering what was broken since I don't use it anymore).

I agree. I don't see the point to having a separate "Quick Reply" and "Advanced" sections if they both accomplish the same thing. It's not like the advanced tools make the process any slower than "Quick Reply" in the first place.

Agreement here too. Power-up the quick reply!

In favor as well.

Agreed. I'm hesitant to volunteer your time for what seems to be a difficult project, but it would be a significant qol upgrade to be able to not have to go to another screen and then open a new window to go back to review the prior posts.

Alternative: A quick way to open the Advanced page in a new tab rather than just updating the current page?

Or just to at least have the previous post in the thread show up in advanced

The Quote button opens fine in a new page/tab, if the Advanced button did that it would make things a lot easier for everyone. It still should go, but that would be a step in the right direction.

What do you mean? Quote opens in the same page by default, as does Advanced. And you can use both buttons to open in a new tab no problem

I can not open Advanced in a new tab, the option does not appear on the list when I right-click, and middle-clicking does nothing.

I remember when using various forums that there was a "preview box" either above or bellow the writing box, with a preview button at the place of our own "advanced" one, refreshing the preview box without the need to leave the page.

Code-wise now, I don't have the slightest clue about how hard or even possible that is.

Thanks. That suggestion actually makes my life easier.

Ah, that's interesting. Never noticed that. I always Ctrl click and that works for Advanced.

That is weird, but good to know.

We can try make it uniform and work with the other 'open in new' methods... if we keep it.

Does anybody use these at the top of a thread?

Or do you use this at bottom?

It'd be nice to reclaim the space and reduce clutter if it's not used.

I've petitioned a couple of times to have all options both top and bottom because I definitely use both. If I had to choose only one place, I'd say top. But I would be against removing either (and for adding the move button to the top)

I wish I hadn’t bloody asked now.
