Nikolai Volkov

Nikolai was during his rounds as usual, making sure that the machinery are properly running to power and support the colony complex. While on his lunch break, he overheard a group of his fellow colleagues chatting.

"You know about that message that is being spread around right? The one where the Assistant Signal Officer have put up an offer of 1000 Credits to visit the cursed site?" says a rather scrawny man.

"Oh yes, The Face. Hee hee... It is a suicide mission, that one. Those who go there will be a sacrifice to The One who Watches..." says the man with a sinister smile and haggard eyes.

"Oh, come on now Sabe Ruth. We don't believe in that crap. That Face isn't some god."

"Hah! God or not, that visage is alive and watching..."

Nikolai knows about Sabe Ruth. He was a cool guy before, though he tried to copy the gauntlets. Now, he is a changed man who have been following this new cult that is formed amongst the colony staff once the structure known as The Face have been discovered.

Nikolai sips on his orange soda while continuing listening to the chatty duo. He doesn't care about what can be charitably described as office gossip - curses, gods, whatever nonsense people come up with when confined to one shared tin can for years and years - but it's hard to begrudge it. Cosmos knows, he'd certainly lose his marbles if he were working here for as long as some of other technicians. Wolf's already plenty stir-crazy, but at least these talks about sacrifices and mysterious watchers still only make him grimace.

The money, though, that's interesting. Not that he specifically needs it, but an extra boost would be perfect to finally abandon this place for something more exciting - a ship, or another colony, maybe an expedition to somewhere unknown. And rumors, even the most ridiculous ones, ain't born from nothing: if this so-called cursed place has anything to offer, then all the better. There are no "face" that one cannot punch, after all.

So once the duo pauses their conversation, Nikolai peels himself off the wall he's been leaning against and stalks over towards them. "Oi," he greets with a simple nod, which is the height of politeness in Volkov's book. "That message you talking about. Who's spreading it, and where can I find them?"

Indeed, the planet the colony is on is a dreary place. The ground is grey, and the clouds in the choking air is also grey. The only colour in this world is in the colony itself.

The scrawny man, known as Shawn, looks up to Volkov as he answers. "The message? It is sent by Samantha, the Assistant Signal Officer. You can find her at her office in the Offices Sector. She is the only higher-up that cares a lot about investigating that creepy place. Everyone just either choose to ignore it, or feel it is not worth the trouble. For me, I know there is nothing I want to do about it."

Ruth shakes his head with a smile. "Not all knows about the nature of The Face. Jeremy Petrov, our prophet, tells us to be patient for it to reveal the full truth to us..."

Shawn starts to get up. "Hey, Volkov is it? I suggest that you don't listen to what this guy is saying. But I shall help you out by sending a message back that you are interested to join the mission."

(Edit: changed the prophet's name to be consistent with previous mentioned.)

Volkov eyes Ruth skeptically, but doesn't dwell too much on his words. Frankly, the aforementioned prophet sounds like a marketer trying to lure in potential customers with vague promises about revealing the meaning of life - and Nikolai never liked vague promises.

"Sure, do that," He instead nods appreciatively at Shawn. Volkov's not the one to complain about life being made easier for him - the less he needs to communicate his intentions, the better. "Sounds like a good time. Some creepiness for 1000 credits." He sips his soda, then throws the can into a nearby bin, narrowly missing but not too concerned about it. "Where's this cursed site?"

As Shawn finishes typing up and sending off a fairly quick message with his communication device, he replies to Nikolai. I don't really know where exactly it is. But I do know it is just close enough to be concerning. If you want specifics, go ask the mission giver herself. What I know atleast is that the site is as big as an excavation pit, and maybe about a week's travel to get there?"

"Hole in the ground with a creepy face in it, got it. Thanks," Nikolai grins slightly, which looks like a threatening snarl on his scarred face. "I'll go sharpen my claws and look for this officer then - unless she finds me first. Would be impressive." Without expecting an answer, he waves at his two colleagues and promptly turns away to the exit from the room - intending to do exactly what he stated. Well, maybe without the claw sharpening part - his gauntlets are already in perfect condition by his reckoning.

Nikolai isn't particularly concerned about time - the remaining time of lunch break is plenty enough to find some higher-up and sign up for a dangerous mission, - but he still reports to his superior just in case, scowls a bit so there's no hesitation about letting him go, and proceeds through the colony towards where he thinks the offices are.

Nikolai eventually finds his way to the right office. There, the officer greets him curtly before giving the quick run down:

He will take part in the team sent to explore the location of The Face and report back any findings and samples. There is a set of coordinates for the area, but the numbers are irrelevant without a mapping device, which will be given when Nikolai is ready to report to the Ground-Transport Garage. (At the main RP thread)

The payment is:
1000 credits for satisfactory report of the site and its nature.
500 credits for gathering decent evidence of sites' nature.
200 credits for visiting the site, but then reporting back any dangers that prevents further investigation.

Nikolai listens to the information quietly, then thanks the officer and affirms his interest in joining - just in case they need a formal agreement of some sort. The payment promised for the evidence of "site's nature" stuff is quite a delightful addition to his knowledge of the situation, seeing as "satisfactory report" is way too vague of a definition for sure payment. But at least bringing a piece of some creepy stone face will still net him good money, and Volkov sure has his claws to notch one.

So, after gathering whatever sparse equipment he thinks he'll need from his barely decorated room at the colony, Nikolai makes his way to the garage, whistling a little tune as he delights in a chance to do something new. He loves his job, but this place hardly offers a challenge even for an electrician...
OOC:
Will post in the main thread later. :)
