Anders Dvorak knew he wasn’t in the Czech Republic anymore. Sure, he had no awareness of how he arrived at his current location, which he assumed was yet another nondescript J.A:N.U.S. facility. The cell walls were tediously similar to his previous, and he could also safely assume that they either housed him at a Vault-III block for long-term incarceration, or one of the variable security levels, Sigma for study, Tau for testing, Phi for vivisection, or something else altogether. At this point he didn’t know which. The guards spoke American English, that was easy to figure out. That the guards were careful around him, and that the cells to the left and right of him were also occupied he could pick up empathically, the latter only very recently, and only in the faintest.
They largely kept Anders sedated and also secured to his seat, given his prodigious strength, and a fully-enclosed mask and dampening helmet was secured to his head by means of an electronically locked collar. These restraints were released once a day for his meals, but otherwise replaced without fail, keeping him blinded and muted to his surroundings. One time when he was temporarily freed he picked up a guard referencing Dumas’ The Man in the Iron Mask’, and was sorely tempted to respond to the disgust in the guard’s voice, but decided against it.
It was not easy to keep track of the days that had passed. Today though, Anders felt that something was about to happen. He wasn’t sure whether it was something that was going to happen to him, or to his fellow inmates, or something else altogether. But there was no harm to be prepared for it...
