Downtime Sessions

How it Works

First, familiarize yourself with the options available in the Downtime Activities thread.

1. Choose your lifestyle. Choose your lifestyle from the available options: squalid, poor, modest, comfortable, wealthy, or aristocratic. Then, pay your lifestyle costs upfront for the downtime period. For example, if you choose a modest lifestyle for your character and you have 1 week of downtime, that will cost 1gp x 7 days = 7gp to be paid up front. You may change your lifestyle, but you can only go up one step from your current lifestyle each week (it takes time to climb the social ladder!). On your first downtime session you can start wherever you like on the scale.

2. Choose how you are spending your downtime. Decide what activities you want to spend your downtime on. You can mix-and-match activities if you have enough time to do more than one. You can roll on the tables for that activity, but these are meant to be DM-facing rules so sometimes they won't apply or will be slightly modified, depending on the circumstances. We will work together to figure it out!

3. Resolve Downtime Activity. This may involve paying associated costs, making skill checks, and rolling on tables. Rolling can be done in this thread. Ask for advice if you aren't sure how it works!

4. Resolve other tasks. Some tasks don't require an entire downtime system to resolve. This might include shopping for mundane gear or roleplaying-only activities like taking care of a family. You can narrate these activities if you feel it is appropriate and spending money on related costs at the end of the downtime session.

5. Write up the story. Make a post that summarizes what went down for the duration of the downtime session. You can make it as simple as you want, but you can also embellish it with narrative descriptions of how things turned out. It can be in character or out of character, your choice.

First Downtime Session

First, let's resolve treasure from the adventure. The Rat Catcher's Guild pays 1gp per Cockatrice Hatchling and 50gp for the Mama for a total of 60gp. Split 4 ways, this is 15gp each which you may add to your character sheet.

Next, let's plan out activities. We have 1 workweek to spend before we begin the next adventure.
@Peindora you said you were interested in: "Probably get her payment, share it with her allies, try to find someone to teach her how to hatch , grow, tame and train the cockatrice, try to flirt with Norran. Help Berry with some job or something... Work."

Sounds like working for the Rat Catcher's guild will be your primary activity. Flirting with Norran and hatching and training the cockatrices can be an "other activity" that we can just handle through roleplay, so you can let us know how those are going. Norran and Jasera will now be NPCs in the world, so feel free to still be in contact with them.

To resolve working, you can make an appropriate skill check for the job. Dexterity (Acrobatics) looks like your best bet, but if you feel something else would apply that is okay too. The choice of skill might flavour your write-up of how this turned out - rat catching with acrobatics as your chosen skill might look different than with survival as your chosen skill.

For complications, roll a d10. On a roll of a 1, we'll consult the complications table and figure out what that means.
@Knifeedgegames you said you were interested in researching the gate. That fits neatly into the Research task. Based on your connections, you can waive the initial 50gp fee. You also have access to a well-stocked library, so your Intelligence check (just add your int modifier, no skills) will be at advantage. Make your roll and we'll see what you discover.

Also check for complications. Roll a d10 and on a result of 1, roll on the complications chart and we'll figure out what that means together.

If you want to add any purely roleplaying activities, feel free.

I'll run Jasera's downtime activity as an example.

First, lifestyle ... I think Jasera would go for comfortable. She's not slumming it like a dirty human. That's 2gp x 7 days = 14gp to be paid at the statrt.

Next, for her downtime activity she'll go ahead and find a buyer for your cockatrice eggs (minus the one for Tilma) and feathers, which we will consider "Selling Magical Items." She will share the costs and profits with all characters that were in the chapter 1 adventure evenly.

The initial cost for this activity will be 25gp, which we will split among the 4 characters (to simplify i'll just deduct it from the profits at the end). We will consider the lot of Cockatrice eggs and feathers to be "common magic item" for the purpose of this activity, which gives it a base price of 100gp. Jasera will make a Charisma (Persuasion) check to see what kind of price she can get.

Result is 21! That means she is able to find a buyer that will pay 150% of the base costs, which is 150gp! Nicely done, Jasera.

Now I'll roll for complications, throwing a d10 and getting a complication on a result of 1. She got a 7, which means everything went pretty smoothly. So, minus the initial fee she rakes in 125gp to share between 4 characters, which we will round to 32gp each. You can each add this to your character sheet at the end of downtime.

Here's my writeup:
Quote:
Jasera, a ranger from the wilds, is well-used to selling her catch to in civilized lands. She finds The Pickling Guild - an elite organization of Iskandarian gourmands - is a most eager buyer, willing to pay top coin for the Cockatrice parts, especially the eggs. They conduct business swiftly and professionally and let you know they're interested in working with you again in the future.

Tilma's downtime session

Lifestyle: Tilma continues her stay at the Inn where she met others. She needs comfortable living after days spent in sewers. That's 2gp x 7 days = 14gp (There goes her payment. Then again week of comfortable living for one day's work isn't too shabby. Wish I could do the same irl)

Downtime activity: Tilma will spend most of her days continuing to work. However she takes the first day off to find someone who teaches her to hatch a cockatrice egg. During evenings she will flirt with Norran or perhaps more.
Guess her work went perfectly. Her reputation as an expert in her craft was true after all, lol. Her research on cockatrices however went down the drain. So she'll just put the egg on a pillow near chimney and hope for the best.
If at any moment during his downtime Berry needs help, Tilma is available to help him. She spent one of her free days researching, she still has the other one. Unless this world only gives 1 free day per week.

Writeup:
Quote:
After returning from her work Tilma said goodbye to Berry and went back to inn together with the other 2. She left them at the bar as she herself went up to her room, kicked off her boots and fell in her bed. Next day after a good washing up she headed to the guild for her payment. After that was done she quickly returned to the inn and shared the money. With that out of the way she carried out her idea of researching info about raising a Cockatrice.
She took Norran along with her. Thinking that some extra help wouldn't hurt. Her first places of research were Inn and the Rat catcher's guild. As those were the only places that she knew in city. Bringing Norran wasn't the best idea after all. Between her constant talking and Norrans awkwardness they most people didn't even talk back to them and just went away. Which eventually pissed off both Tilma and Norran and they sort of beat up a drunk dwarf that was a tad disrespectful. Without any success they returned to the inn, got a drink and spent the rest of the evening talking/flirting. Tilma put the egg on her pillow near the chimney before going to sleep with hoped that the egg will eventually hatch.
The rest of the days she went to work. It hadn't been long since she arrived her, and honestly the Rat Catchers of this city seemed to be slacking off, so she had no problem Finding the rats. She eliminated hundreds upon hundreds of the little critters, A bolt here, a trap or poison there. (I wanted to write how she disposes of the corpses but had no idea how to do it without polluting the water or leaving a pile of free food for the other critters of sewers. So I'll just leave it as behind the scenes character knowledge)
During the evenings after work Tilma continued to flirt with Norran who spent his day looking for help with his own quest and evenings drinking. She quickly "Scored" it with Norran and they spent the following nights together.
OOC:
I would still like to roll for my success on finding someone to teach me about the cockatrice hatching or something. Since normally this is Research action I presume. For which I have no money. But you allowed me to just describe it. I'll make a roll with disadvantage. Is that ok with you?
OOC:
Also, should/could I roll to see if Tilma is expectant? Her lifetime goal is to have kids, after all. Won't interfere with her adventring. She isn't the type to take it easy just because of that.

Berry returns to his lodging house in Old Town, frequented by other low-class gnomes and run by a seedy gnome landlord that leaves his tenants in peace as long as he gets his 2 silver a day. (-14sp)
During the week, Berry sticks to simple jobs hoping to gather money to find a bigger job for the coming weeks.

In between picking pockets and breaking into houses, he spends time in the Templegate library, first looking for references to ASTAROTH then connections to SEAL OF ASTAROTH and any connections to that and the city, keeping in mind the green and violet crystals to see if anything like that crops up.

Notes for Knife: According to the downtime rules, Berry can't do both crime and research in the same week. That's not to say that Berry isn't doing some small-time pick-pocketing while doing research but it would be roleplay-only. This means there is no need to do rolls for it, you gain no lasting benefits or suffer any lasting consequences, and you can describe the outcome as you wish. There will be future downtime sessions that are multiple workweeks and then you will be able to better mix-and-match activities.
Quote:
The results of your research: You have spent long hours at the Templegate Library, scouring through moldy and brittle tomes by candlelight. You discover both the identity of Astaroth and the secret behind his seals.

Astaroth was an archmage and one of the leaders of the Vendian army that conquered Iskandar when it was a free city over five hundred years ago. He is noted in several histories of Iskandar as the governor of the city for the first eight years of Vendian reign and was known for being ruthlessly logical. However, the historian Stolicus shows in a lengthy treatise that his policies were sound and had lasting, stabilizing impact despite the hardships they caused at the time. His name also appears in tomes of the arcane arts, and his contribution to magical research and lore are plentiful, especially in the area of the occult and demonology. Records show he died of poisoning on the eighth anniversary of the fall of the free city of Iskandar, a mystery which was never solved. Various political rivals were suspected, nothing ever proved.

As the for the Seals of Astaroth, you have to dig much deeper. Eventually you learn that Iskandar was constructed on the ruins of a forgotten city, and before being conquered by the Vendian Empire, it had a thriving economy in what the records refer to as "delving" - finding pathways into the ruins and recovering its artifacts and treasure. Astaroth abolished delving in the first month of his reign and spent a year crafting the Seals of Astaroth, which were buried in secret locations under the city in the shape of a pentagram. The seals obscure any access points to the ruins, making it impossible to find even if you knew where they once were. The Seals also obscure themselves. Prominent delvers tried in vain to find ruins or destroy the seals, but none could manage it. The secret of their location died with Astaroth.

You realize that if this information is correct, the location of a Seal of Astaroth could be incredibly valuable to the right people. You suspect the reason that you were able to see it at all was due to the damage sustained to the crystals used to power the seal.
I should note that Berry would know that Iskandar is currently a free city; the Vendian empire collapsed into civil war around twenty years ago and is no more. As the final act to save his empire, the Emperor reached into the Abyss to cast some terrible spell but failed to control it. The spell tore open a rift to the Abyss not far from Iskandar, which was then besieged by demonic forces. Iskandar held, and the demons were forced back into the rift, but the rift is still open to this day.

Notes for Peindora: Yep, you are welcome to roll dice to determine outcomes for roleplay-only activities. It's a nice way to inspire the story - that way you can be surprised too. Looks like the egg will have to wait for another week to hatch as per your direction.

With a roll of 26, your work week was quite productive! So, you gain your lifestyle back + 25gp for a total of 39gp! Not bad for a rat catcher! I'll add that the Guild is definitely taking notice of Tilma's skill and they make her Member of the Week. You get a voucher for a free meal at the Bargewright Inn in the Harbour District.

In terms of disposing of the rats, the city does have Otyugh pits where they have encouraged Otyughs to make a home and dispose of garbage. When reliably fed, Otyughs become incredibly docile and the city has no shortage of garbage to feed them. You can visit a garbage pit and throw just about anything inside, and the Otyughs steadily and happily devour it all. The resulting waste is used as fertilizer in farming.

OK thanks. I wasn't looking for anything from the "work" aspect but wasn't considering it to be Crime as that's what he'll usually work up to when he has the time and funds to arrange a Big Job.
Nov 13, 2021 6:33 pm
Then that's how I'll dispose of the dead rats.

When Timbers showed up at the Templegate library inquiring about incredibly exoteric matters, Laurent was just happy to see his old reading companion. When he then learned that the object of Berry's research was no wild, improbable rumour, but a grounded historical mystery, begging to be unravelled, Laurent's enthusiasm with this coincidence grew immensely. Turned out Berry had already dug deep into the archives and found the key elements to understanding these Seals of Astaroth. What he had begun to uncover needed further digging, however, and Laurent was the perfect partner in this endeavour, his ties to the scholarly and archival worlds being of great use.
Picking up where Berry's investigations had led him, Laurent wants to investigate wether the sealing of the Undercity was (and is) perceived as a blessing or as a hindrance by those rare individuals that knew of the existence of these access points before Astaroth's forging of the seals. Is the under city a place of marvellous mysteries deserving to be uncovered, or a dangerous and ultimately unprofitable place in which to explore? What could have led Astaroth to this decision: greed -- for he wanted to reserve the Undercity to himself -- or civic virtue -- for he hoped to save the citizenry from probable ruin?

Rolling dice.

Notes for Laurent: He discovers the following three secrets:

1. You find transcripts of council debates where the Vendians argued about the merits of sealing off the ruins. In the end, it seems the recovered artifacts were seen as too great a threat to Vendian rule. It seems some of the artifacts that the Delvers recovered were used to defend the city against the Vendians, and they cost the Empire dearly. It was thought that in the hands of truly dangerous wizards, this kind of power could be used to challenge the Emperor himself.

In the lowest levels of the Templegate library, Laurent calls in a favour and enters the Deep Stacks. There, he finds books so old and brittle that they are encased in a glass cubes and filled with arcane fluids to keep them from disintegrating further. He has to turn the pages ever so carefully with the Mage Hand spell.

2. In one such book, he finds Pre-Vendian records that show the existence of a Delvers' Guild. This was a united group of ragtag adventurers that explored the undercity ruins and came back with valuable knowledge and treasures of a bygone age. The Delvers' Guild seemed to be a good and honorable institution. They formed search parties to rescue fallen comrades, stocked tunnels with emergency supplies, and raised funds to ease the burden on the families of their fallen comrades.

3. It appears the dangers were many in the undercity ruins: chief among these were horrible monsters believed to be the former masters of the ruined city twisted by whatever cataclysm befell it. But, such treasures they found! Hoards of silver and gold coins from ancient empires, bizzare constructs and ancient machines that defied explanation, books in ancient languages of long-forgotten histories, and powerful magic spells and items. Fortunately, it seemed the monsters had no interest in surfacing; if anything, they appeared to want to dig ever deeper into the earth.
Nov 25, 2021 1:52 pm
Exhilarated at his discoveries over the week, Laurent decided that he must find his old pall Timbers to share the information. It would be necessary to decide who, if anyone, ought to be made aware of the Seal. Perhaps it would be preferable not to attract too much attention to this entrance, unless the broken seal had been discovered by dangerous figures, in which case informing the authorities might be recommendable. Donning his travelling cloak and reaching for his trusty walking staff, he strode out of his cloister and moved to where Berry had said he'd found lodging.
OOC:
Just assuming that this is what he'd do. Len might have other plans, of course.
Nov 25, 2021 4:17 pm
Seeing Laurent approach, Berry meets him at the door and rather than inviting him in, redirects him to the local tavern. Over ale, he listens carefully as Laurent details his findings and shares his notes.

This is a turning point for Berry. Initially he was driven to close this gate for the betterment of Iskander but what if there are riches there? Maybe we should be trying to get the thing working rather than trying to close it. He plays of Laurent's need for knowledge and decides this might be the big hit he's been waiting for. Fortune and Glory!
Nov 25, 2021 6:00 pm
Laurent needed little prodding from his former classmate. The promise of inspecting the seal and, even more incredible!, plunging into this fabled Undercity with Timbers and his companions seemed an irresistible lure. As the noises of the tavern dissipated into a vaguely-remembered background, the wizard-priest shared his findings with a passion he had not felt in recent memory. Even as he exchanged his views with Berry, his mind rushed in seven disparate directions at once, plans forming, dissolving and reassembling at an untenable pace, excitement at the prospects of pursuing any number of such partially-formed stratagems growing constantly.

"Just imagine the forgotten lore, the artefacts of ages gone, waiting to be discovered and brought to light! The mysteries and puzzles to be unraveled!", and then, as if suddenly realising the jealousies that such a discovery could stir, he spoke once more, now in a more measured, nearly conspirational tone "We’d better keep this under wraps for now, right? Figure out how the seal was found, and if it has been breached, and by whom…or what.". At the first realisation of potential danger, the young man’s whole attitude changed. Not fear, as such; more of a seriousness hatched from the consideration of all the many risks ahead.
Nov 25, 2021 6:46 pm
Imagine the Gold! smiles Berry to himself. Manipulation was so easy.
Nov 26, 2021 2:02 pm
The young man indeed gave no indication that he suspected any instrumental behavior on the part of his old friend. Settling down a bit, after his long-winded, enthusiastic outbursts Laurent sipped his drink in silence and then asked, "When can we go see this place? Are your companions available soon? We shouldn't wait too long... I'll have to speak to Master Erboral, to arrange a leave of absence. I trust it can be done swiftly...". As he finished his sentence, he looked eagerly at Berry, hoping to hear good news.
Nov 26, 2021 2:39 pm
"Berry!" you hear a loud female voice from behind you. Tilma walks into the tavern and sees her friend. "Where have you been this past week?" she grabs him by the shoulders and squeezes them before giving him a short shoulder massage. "And who is this with you?" she looks at the guy next to Berry while continuing to massages and at moments squeeze his shoulders. Handsome, dashing but maybe too aristocratic for her taste.
Without waiting for the answer she starts to talk about her week. "I had quite a fruitful week. You probably noticed the almost complete absence of rats in the sewers around here." she looks proud of herself, "I eliminated at least a few hundreds these days. Oh! And me and Norran are together now! You know those muscles he has? Those Big Handsome muscles..." she looks dreamy as she talks "Those aren't the only thing that's big. If you know what I mean. No luck with cockatrice egg though." she drastically yet naturally changes the subject, "I couldn't find anyone who would know how to hatch the damn thing. So I put it in front of the chimney. Hopefully it will hatch not cook. I left Norran to look after it just in case. I promised him that I would look for some help with his problem while he's occupied. You know, finding help to defend his tribe? By the way Jasera got quite a price for the eggs and all. Did you get your cut? I haven't seen her around. Do you have any idea where she is? A pint if ale for me." she suddenly switches from you to barman.
Nov 26, 2021 5:35 pm
Laurent's eyes widened as they saw the newcomer, and even more as she described her last few days. She seemed colorful, interesting and ... voracious, he thought. Very tactile, quite brazen. At the mention of cockatrice eggs and their hatching, Laurent paled slightly, both at the thought of Berry and his companions having found cockatrices about — creatures of legend! — and of this elf-maiden wanting to hatch one at home. What a wild day this was turning out to be.

"C... Cockatrice eggs?", he muttered involuntarily. Looking at his gnomish companion, he added "You hadn't told me that, old chap!".

His gaze turning back to the newcomer, and realizing how impolite he had been, the young scholar stood up somewhat clumsily and stated in a rather formal tone "Forgive me, I am Laurent Gaudamus. An old school mate of Timber's... He, uh, asked me to help researching some interesting findings he made."
OOC:
If you have strong preferences regarding inner dialogue, let me know. I often play characters that have very little to do action-wise in many scenes, so I play them as having a constant inner monologue: impressions, theories, running commentary... Some people dislike knowing, as players, what another character thinks without having in-character knowledge of those very same thoughts. And I've seen inner dialogue done in insulting or demeaning ways. So if any of what I write is disturbing your play flow, the kind of RP experience you want to have, or crosses any of your personal lines, please let me know and I'll just cut it off immediately.

OOC:
Doesn't bother me. I have played more than one to which had a minimum amount of words. Some rather long. So inner dialogue was necessary. Thus I'm used to it. Sometimes I use it sometimes I don't. With Tilma I won't really need to cause she doesn't know when to shut up anyway.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Tilma. I haven't been in the town for too long. It has been, what, two weeks by now? I met Berry during a job. He helped me out, saved my life. I've been helping him a couple of times since then, he has been helping me. He's a friend and associate of sorts." she pushes a pair of dreads behind her ear revealing the abundance of earrings. "So you've been doing research?" she turns to Berry. "About those gates or something that we saw? Did you find out anything good?"
Nov 26, 2021 9:11 pm
OOC:
Inner monologue fine by me.
Berry sits quietly, clearly uncomfortable at the physical contact with Tilma but says nothing to indicate she should stop. He likes the elf but sometimes she just doesn't shut up.

"Oh yes, hey. Laurent, this is Tilma. She was with me when we found the gate and yes, killed a cockatrice. Seems even the babies have the minimal power to petrify," he smiles at the memory of the kill, especially the gold its head produced.

Lowering his voice, he leans in, whispering with a conspiratorial tone, "We may have found a literal gold mine."
